THE GREEN TOURIST MYTH OR REALITY?

Green issuse have global warming ,animal welfare and wildlife conservation, organic food, pollution and the recycling of waste product.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s a view develop a green consumers who considered environmental issues when product to buy or not.

A customer boycott of Aerosol-based products that contained cholorofluorocarbons ( CFCs).

A number of factors 1. The writings of academics about impacts of

tourism ,including the highly influential book by Mathieson and Wall

Tourism:Economic,Physical and Social Impacts ,published in 1982.

2. The work of pressure groups ,notably Tourism Concern

3. High-profile policy statements and initiatives by government agencies such as those made in the UK in the early 1990s.

Eco-tourists a large motivation a desire to see natural history

of a destination. Alternative tourism tourism is less packaged and is smaller scale ‘greener ’ than mass market package tourism. Intelligent tourism a desire of some tourist to learn something new

while they are on vacation ,seen as educational, cultural tourism, study holidays

Sustainable tourism concerned with social justice and economic

viability as well as the physical environment. Ethical tourists concerned with broader range of issues that

archetypal green tourist. (HR policies in the tourism Industry such as

pay levels and the employment of local labour)

The different shades of green may reflect differences between consumers in terms of their

1. Awareness and knowledge of the issues . 2. Attitudes towards the environment in general. 3. Other priorities in life such as making a living. 4. Their health ,family commitments and

housing.

Green tourists might be influenced by a number of motivators .

1. An altruistic belief in the need to protect the environment.

2. A desire to feel good about their behavior as tourists.

3. A wish to Improve their image among friends and relatives by being seen to be concerned with environment issues.
