Saints of the Week 14th St Laurence O’Toole, Patron of the Archdiocese of Dublin. Laurence became a monk and Abbot in Glendalough and later, archbishop of Dublin. During the troubles of the Norman invasion he worked to ensure the continued success of the reform movement in the Irish Church. The diocese covers Dublin County parts of Kildare and most of Wicklow, it includes the ancient diocese of Glendalough.
16th St Margaret of Scotland Patroness of Scotland Margaret, wife of Malcom III, king of the Scots. She had been exiled to Hungary while the Danes ruled England. She took refuge later in Scotland where she and Maclom married in 1069 and they provided good rule for the country. She was one of the chief movers in the reform of the church in
Scotland, then at a very low ebb. She re-established Iona and built Dunfermline as one of Scotland’s chief monastic sites and the burial place of the Scottish Kings, where she herself was laid to rest. 16th St Gertrude We don't know who her parents were. She was raised in the Cistercian Abbey of Helfta, Saxony Germany from age five. An extremely bright Student, and gentle person. At age 26, when she had become too enamored of philosophy, she received a vision of Christ from then on she studied the Bible and the works of the Church Fathers. Received many visions and mystical instruction, which formed the basis of her
writings. Helped spread devotion to the Sacred Heart. 17th St Elizabeth of Hungary After becoming Queen her husband joined the crusade and died. She left the royal household and started a hospital. She died at the age of 24. 18th Dedication of the Basilicas of Sts Peter and Paul The Basilica of St Peter is built over the grave of peter on the
Vatican hill. It was the old grave yard of ancient Rome. The Basilica of St Paul outside the wall is built over St Paul’s grave.
