A relatively mild winter enabled Eighty-One Speedway in Park City to move forward with renovations for the season.

Promoter John Allen said earlier in the week they had planned on opening April 4. But new public-gathering rules that went into effect this week has changed that.

“We will not be able to open until the government tells us it is safe,” he said. “We are very concerned about the health of our participants, spectators, and employees.”

Some of the changes made over the winter include an updated sewer system, purchasing new equipment for grooming the speedway to im-prove the racing surface and erecting a fence around the perimeter of the facility.

As for fan comfort, Allen says the grandstand has been refurbished with aluminum seats, foot-boards, kickboards and accessible ramps for people with disabilities; the concession stand has been remodeled and updated as a walk-through setup that should provide faster service; and the rest-rooms have been remod-

eled and updated. “We have also worked

on smoothing the spectator parking lot,” said Allen, “and the pit parking has seen improvements.”

Retaining walls have been installed around the corners of the racing surface. Workers are currently installing a catch fence around the corners

and along the back straight. On the track, weekly

racing will be each Satur-day night, with the modi-fied series sanctioned by the USRA. Allen said he has specials lined up with USMTS, USAC, OCRS, ASCS, URSS and Sooner

Late Model Series.Allen hopes the fans will

hang in there until they are able to go racing.

“I would like the fans to stay positive in these rough times and come out and check out the improve-

ments when we can open,” he said. “We are very excited about the upcoming season and hope people enjoy the changes we have made. Preregistration of racers has been very strong, and we are expecting a good turnout when racing resumes.”
