InOctober2010,anAdHoccommitteeofCHsrewroteandrefocusedtheserviceguidelinestofacilitateimplementationoftheMSUImperativesasoutlinedbyDr.Dunnandtoreemphasizetheimportanceoffaculty/staffparticipationintheResidentialColleges.AfterapprovalbytheCCHs,theywerereviewed,editedandapprovedbyDr.Dunn.InAprilof2011Dr.DunnpresentedtherevisedguidelinesattheCampus‐wideAdministrator'sMeetinginWratherAuditoriumandtheCHsdistributedthemtothefacultyandprofessionalstaff.Inthe2011‐2012yeartherevisedguidelines,alongwithanemphasisonintrinsicrewards,willbeusedtorefocusandreinvigoratefacultyinvolvementintheresidentialcolleges.

CIVstudentsarestillhavingdifficultiesdevelopingconcisethesestatementsandoutlinesforrequiredshortpapers.AlthoughCIVinstructorsurgedtheirstudentstousetheJonesWritingCenterintheWaterfieldLibrary,itisestimatedthatonlyabout8%(64students)didsoatleastonce.OfthesestudentsahighnumberwenttotheWritingCentermorethanonce.ProfessorTaufiqRashid,theCIVCoordinator,reportsthatthefall2010sampleofstudentpapersisperhapstoosmalltobasemanyassumptionsbutwemaysurmisethatofthoseCIVstudentswhowenttotheWritingCentertherewasamarkedimprovementofwell‐craftedthesestatementssupportedbyoutlines.Inordertomakemoreprogresswithourstudents'abilitiestoformulatethesestatementsandoutlineswewillneedtofindmethodstoinducethemtogototheWritingCenter.

Duringthepastyear,Ihavekeptupcommunicationswiththeteachersintheregion,withemailstoallsecondarymathematicsteachersthispastFalltotellthemaboutSpringcoursework,andanotherroundofemailsthispastSpringtotellthemaboutSummerandFallcourseworkaswellasaboutanew(online)optionforSpring2012.ThroughtheSpring2010surveywewereabletoidentifyaclasstimethatwasmoreconvenientforthein‐servicesecondarymathematicsteachersandidentifyastatisticscoursethatisofinteresttoanumberofthem.LossofastatisticianlastSummerandthedevelopmentofanotherstatisticsclassmadeitimpossibletogettheteachingstatisticscoursedevelopedforFall2011,howeverIhavegoodhopestohaveonereadyforFall2012.Theemailsandsurveyhavebeguntheprocessofbuildingcommunicationsbetweenourdepartmentandthein‐serviceteachers,asindicatedbysomefollow‐upemailsfromahandfulofin‐serviceteachers.Whiletherewereonly3in‐serviceteachersinourcoursesthisyear(andatleastoneadditionalonethissummer),Iexpectthistoincreaseinthecomingyearsaswelearnmoreabouttheireducationalneeds,astheybecomemoreawarethatweareinterestedintheirfutureeducationalneeds,andaswecatchmoreofthemtowardsthebeginningoftheirplansratherthanattheend.Finally,thispastSpringIalsoinvitedMiddleSchoolMathematicsteachersinthe18countyregiontoasurveyliketheoneIhadinvitedSecondarySchoolMathematicsteachersto(inSpring2010).Thus,whilewedidnotmeetlastFall'stargetofhaving5in‐servicesecondaryMathematicsteachersinMaster'slevelcoursework,butwedidachieveastrongbeginning.

WecontactedanappropriateclubateachofthefourKCTCSschoolsinourregionaboutdevelopingarelationshipbetweenourclubandtheirs,awardingscholarshipstotheirbestmathematicsgraduatescominghereasmathematicsmajors,andotherwiserecruitingtheirmathematicsgraduates.TherewassubstantialinterestgeneratedwithPaducah,andwedidawardascholarshipthisSpringtoaMathematicsstudentgraduatingfromWKCTCandcomingherenextFall.MembersofourMathClubweregoingtoassisttheirMathclubinputtingonanElementary‐MiddleMathcontest,butthecontestwasputoffuntilthiscomingFall.TherewasalsorealinterestfromtheHopkinsvilleCampus,wherethecommunicationpromptedthesponsoroftheScienceclubtrytogetthememberstomakeitaScience/Mathclub.Thatwasallthefurtherthatwegotwiththemthisyear.TheHendersonfacultywereinterested,buttheyjusthavetoofewstudentstomakeaMathcluborarelationshipviable;we(usandthem)leftitthatwhentherewerenextsomeinterestedmathematicsstudentsthere,we'dconnectinsomeway.TheonlydisappointmentwasthatwewereunabletoprogressanyfurtherwithMadisonville,eventhoughtheyalreadyhaveaMathematicsclub;thefacultytherewereverybusyimplementingsomechangesthathadoccurredthere.Havingaspeakerexchangethispastyearwashamperedsomewhatby

WewereunsuccessfulinthedifficulttaskofhiringafacultymemberwithaDoctorateinMathematicsEducation(butwewereextremelyclose).WewilltryagainthisnextyearandIhavegoodhopeofbeingsuccessful.WewereabletohireaMathematicsEducatorwithaMaster'sdegreeinMathematicsforouropenLecturerposition.ThisnewLecturerwillserveascoordinatorofourcourseworkforElementaryandMiddleSchoolEducation(MAT115,MAT215,MAT305,MAT399)andbeinvolvedinK‐12educationalgrantsandinitiativesatthelocal,state,andnationallevel.Healreadyhassomeexcellentideasforthosecoursesforthecomingyear,andheisleadingourdepartment'seffortsinMSU'sSenateBillIgrantmuchbetterthanwewouldbedoingwithouthim.ThispastyearwedidincreasethenumberofsectionsofMAT115offeredfrom3to4,sothattheclasssizesarenowdownto30studentsperclass.Inaddition,thispastyearweresearchedtheprerequisitesofotherinstitutionsinthestateandregionforthestandardMAT115andMAT215(MathematicsforElementaryandMiddleTeachersI&II);wefoundthatourprerequisiteswereamongtheweakestandsowedevelopedmoreappropriateprerequisitesforthesecoursesandtheAcademicCouncilapprovedthemforimplementationinFall2011.Finally,thedepartmentpaysfortheteachingofMAT305and399ontheHopkinsvillecampustohelpafledglingMiddleSchool2+2programgetstarted.Forthisgoal,weachievedthetargetofhiringtheMathematicsEducatorwithaMaster'sdegreeinMathematicsascoordinatorforMAT115,andweloweredtheclasssizesMAT115.Theremainingtargetsarenotmeasurableuntilseveralyearshavepassed.Aboveandbeyondthesetargets,wealsoalignedourprerequisitesforMAT115andMAT215withthoseofotherinstitutionsinthestateandregion.

Ataskforcemetthroughouttheyeartogatherinformationaboutothersimilarprograms,includingfeesforfaculty‐andstudent‐taughtlessons,othercourse/ensembleofferings,andnatureofthedirector'sposition.Wewillneedadirectorwhohandlesthemoney,thescheduling,andthePRforthisprogram.Itmaybepossibletocombinethiswithanotheradministrativeassignment,butafacultymemberwithafull‐timeteachingloadwillnothavethetimetorunthecommunitymusicschool.Itwilltakesomeonenew.InFall2010weofferedaguitarclassoncampusforbeginners.Inspring2011wenegotiatedwithNorthCallowayElementarySchooltobeginafter‐schoolviolinclassesforelementarystudentsatthatschooltaughtbyanMSUstudent.Lessonsoncampustaughtbyfacultyandupperclassstudentscontinuetobeoffered,yetallareseparatelyfundedandmanagedbyeachteacher.Itwilltakeaprogramdirectortopullthisprojecttogether.AsthisCommunityMusicSchool(newnameTBD)continuestogrow,thepotentialfornewtownandgownrelationshipswilldevelop.WecanservetheK‐12studentsandadultsofthecommunityaswellasourstudentsthroughvisibleandviableendeavorssuchasthis.Everyonebenefitsfromourinitiative.

TheOSHdepartmentresearchedandcontactedvendorsofvirtual/webbasedinterviewtechnologies.Afterselectingavendorseveraltrainingsessionswereconducted.Bythefall1010semester,twointerviewroomswithintheOSHdepartmentwereelaboratelyremodeled(furniture,carpet,blindsandpaint)andequippedwithvirtual/webbasedtechnologies(flatscreenTV/largeremotescreen,webcams,microphonesandlaptopcomputers,projectorsandappropriatesoftware).Bothroomsarenowutilizedforbothtraditionalinterviewrooms,aswellasvirtual/web‐basedinterviewsforthosecompaniesunabletocometotheMurrayStatecampus.Inthespring2011semester,severaltrialrunswereconductedonthevirtual/webbasedinterviewsystemwiththesoftwaresupplier.Bytheendofthesemester,thesystemwasfunctioningforusewithcompanieswantingtorecruitoccupationalsafetyandhealthinternsandgraduates.Theinterviewrooms,bothinthetraditionalandweb‐basedmodes,wereutilizedinplacingover80internsforthesummer2011semesterandaveryhighplacementrateofMay/August2011

graduatesinfull‐timepositions.Wewillcontinuetoupdatethetechnologiesandimprovetheeaseofuseandcompatibilityofthevirtual/webbasedinterviewsysteminthehopesofappealingtomorecompaniesfacinghighertravelcostsandleanerbudgets.

TodevelopapartnershipwithCNAInsurancetoenhancestudents'learningexperiencesthroughthedonationofresources,trainingopportunitiesandlaboratoryequipment(fall‐protectiondemonstrationmodel).
AninitialmeetingbetweenrepresentativesfromCNAInsuranceandtheOSHdepartmentwasconductedearlyfall2010semester.RepresentativesfromCNAInsuranceincludedMr.BillBoyd,SeniorVice‐PresidentofRiskControl,andJoeWallace,DirectorofRiskControlofU.S.InsuranceOperations.Severalphoneconversationsfollowedtheinitialmeeting.Thepurposeofthemeetingwastodevelopcollaborativeopportunitiesforresources,donations,training,internshipsandfull‐timepositions.Inthefall2010semester,CNAInsuranceprovidedthecourseexpensesforanOSHgraduatestudenttoattendafallprotectiontrainingprograminMinnesota.Inthespring2011semester,CNAInsurancecommittedtoanannualscholarshipdonationof$8,000totheOSHdepartmentatMurrayState.The$8,000wasdistributedasfollows:$4,000toanOSHgraduatestudent(ThisstudentwillalsobeinterningwithCNAInsurancethissummer.);$2,000toanOSHundergraduatestudentinterningwithaninsurancecompany;and$2,000toanOSHundergraduatestudentinterestedintheloss/riskcontrolfield.TwoOSHgraduatestudentswhograduatedinMay2011haveacceptedfull‐timepositionswithCNAinsuranceintheChicagoandNashvillelocations.OneOSHgraduatestudentisinterningwithCNAinsuranceinNashvilleduringthesummer2011semester.TheOSHdepartmentwillcontinuetobuilditspartnershipwithCNAInsuranceinthecontinuedcollaborationofthedevelopment/advancementoftheFallProtectionDemonstrationLaboratory;throughCNA’scontinuedsupportofOSHstudentswithitsannualscholarship;andtheappointmentofOSHstudentsinfull‐timepositionsandinternshipswithCNA.

AlthoughtheDepartmenthadeighteenstudent‐authoredorco‐authoredresearchpresentationsatlocal,regionalandnationalconferencesoverthe2010‐2011academicyear,therewasnotaformalizeddepartmentalpresenceatasingleconference.Mostsubmissionsmustbemadeover6monthspriortothescheduleddateoftheconferencetoenablesufficienttimeforthepeer‐reviewprocess.AtthetimethisgoalwassetintheFallof2010,manydeadlineswerealreadyfast‐approaching.TheDepartmenthasbeguntheplanningprocesstorealizethisgoalinthenextacademiccycleasfacultyareawareofthisprioritypriortobeginningofthesubmissionprocess.Severalconferenceshavebeenidentifiedandwillbecomparedagainsttheacademiccalendarfor2011‐2012.Onceselected,thetargetedconferencewillbecommunicated(thissummer)tothefacultysothatappropriatesubmissionscanbeidentifiedwellinadvanceofduedate.

TheDepartmentappliedforapprovalasasponsorofcontinuingeducationprogramsformentalhealthprofessionals.TheBoardofExaminersinPsychologygrantedthisapprovalinMarch,2011.Sincethatapproval,threecontinuingeducationprogramshavebeenheld(TheHighsandLowsofLifeasaMurrayStateUniversityMen’sBasketballFan,March24;ThePainofRejection:BreakingandRestoringBondswithOthers,April7;andUsingtheReyMemoryTestswithChildrenandAdults,April2;eachwithgreaterattendancethanthepreviousevent.Atotalof32hoursofCEcredithavebeenawarded,free‐of‐charge,toregionalprovidersofmentalhealthservices.WehavealreadyscheduledourfirsteventfortheFall,2011schedule.OnSeptember9,wewillhostaworkshoponeatingdisordersforlocalcounselors/therapistsandclinicalpsychologygraduatestudents.

Innovation Instituteanewevaluationsystemforthetwodirectorsofthetwoprogramsinthedepartment.
DuringtheschoolyearaProgramEvaluationCommitteewasformed,madeupoftworepresentativeseachfromtheSocialWorkandCriminalJusticePrograms.Thiscommitteewaschargedwiththeresponsibilityofdevelopinganevaluationinstrumentthatwouldbepresentedtotheentirefaculty,includingthetwodirectorswhoseperformancewouldeventuallybeassessed.TheProgramEvaluationCommitteeexaminedtheevaluationinstrumentsusedinseveraldifferentdepartmentsandproducedaproduct,whichwasfullydiscussedintwofacultymeetingsdevotedjusttothisissue.ThefinalizedinstrumentwasapprovedbythefacultyandadministeredinlateApril.Theissueofconfidentialitywasacentralconcernamonganumberofdepartmentmembers.TheEvaluationCommittee,assistedsomewhatbythedepartmentchair,developedthefollowingproceduresforadministeringthequestionnaire.First,eachfacultymember(excludingthechairandthetwodirectors)wasinstructedtopickupacopyofthequestionnaireinstrumentfromthedepartmentadministrativeassistant.Someofthequestionsontheinstrumentwereclosedendedandsomewereopenedended.Second,responsestotheopenendedquestionsweretobetypedtoavoidspecifichandwritingbeingrecognized.ItwasdecidedbytheentirefacultythatthemembersoftheEvaluationCommitteewouldalsowriteareportbasedontheresultsoftheevaluation.AnexcellentsuggestionwasmadebythechairoftheEvaluationCommittee,thatthetwocriminaljusticemembersofthecommitteewouldwriteuptheresultsfortheDirectoroftheSocialWorkProgram,andthetwosocialworkmembersofthecommitteewouldwriteupthereportbasedontheresultsfortheDirectoroftheCriminalJusticeProgram.Third,thedepartmentaladministrativeassistantwouldplayanimportantroleinthisprocess,inasmuchasshewouldmakesureeachfacultymemberreceivedaquestionnaire(theassistantkeptasigneddocumentwhereeachfacultymemberindicatedhe/shereceivedtheinstrument).Inonecasewhereafacultymemberturnedinawrittenresponsetotheopenendedquestions,theadministrativeassistanttypedthematerialover.Finally,theassistantreceivedandrecordedthereturnedquestionnaire.Shealsomadesurethequestionnairedatawaskeptunderlockandkey.

Progresstowardthisgoalisstillaworkinprogress.IthasbeendeterminedthatthefirstcoursethatwillbepitchedtolocalhighschoolsisSWK225(HumanDiversity).Thisisaclassthatincludesinterestingandtimelymaterial,inasmuchasitcoverstheissuesofrace,ethnicity,gender,sexualorientation,socialclass,age,anddisability.HumanDiversityistheclassinourdepartmentthathasdrawnthemosthighschoolstudentsfromtheBridgeProgram(nowknownasRacerAcademy)hereoncampus.DiscussionsareongoingwithMayfieldHighSchool(locatedinMayfield,KY)aboutofferingthediversityclassinthe2011‐2012schoolyear.Thereisonlyaslimchancethatthiscoursewillbeofferedinthefallof2011andabetterchancethatitwillbepresentedinthespringsemesterof2012.

Therehavebeenseveraldiscussionsbetweencriminaljusticefacultyandsocialworkfacultyregardingcommoncoursesthatcanbeusedinbothprogramsaselectives.Wehavetriedtodrawonandlearnfromsomepastexperiences,someofthemfailuresofasort.Forexample,oneresearchclassthatwaslistedundersocialworkandtaughtbyasocialworkfacultymemberwastakenbybothcriminaljusticeandsocialworkmajors,inturngeneratedanumberofproblems.Wehaverecentlystartedtotalktothehandfulofstudentsthataremajoringincriminaljusticeandpursuingaminorinsocialworkorviceversa,inordertogetsomeideasaboutcommoncoursesthatmightbeattractivetostudents.Theabove‐mentionedprojectisstillaworkinprogress.

WeconductedaCampusDiningCustomerSatisfactionSurveyinNovemberof2010.Thesurveywascompletedby1404customersofwhich94%werestudents.71%werefemaleand29%weremale.63%wereon‐campuscustomerswhile37%wereoff‐campus.Thegapofparticipationwasprettyevenat30%beingfreshman,23%sophomores,23%juniors,16%seniors,7%graduates.Acopyofthesurveyresultsisavailableuponrequest.Weplantoconductthissurveyagaininthefallof2011.

InordertofosterexcellenceSpringer/Franklin'shonorsociety,SigmaEta,plannedtoincreasethenumberofnewmembersduring2010‐2011.TheorganizationconductedinductionceremoniesonOctober18forthefallsemesterandMarch31forthespringsemester.Webeganthe2010‐2011academicyearwith23membersandinducted7newmembersduringthefallandspring.Sixofourmembersgraduated;wefinishedtheyearwith24membersforanetgainofonememberfortheyear.Thismodestgainrepresentedtheattainmentofourgoal.Sixofournewmembersjoinedduringthefallandonlyoneduringthespring.Perhapsthesmallnumberofspringinducteeswasaresultofourcollege'sinvolvementinotheractivities,suchasAllCampusSingandResidentialCollegeoftheYearandrelatedawardcompetitions.WeplantomakeSigmaEtamorevisibleduring2010‐2011andincludeahigher‐profilepublicitycampaigninconjunctionwithmembershipinvitationsthatwesendtostudentswhoqualifyforSigmaEta.WedidengageinsuccessfulcommunityserviceprojectsbymakingdoordecorationsforresidentsofFernTerraceRetirementHomeduringthefallandspringsemesters.WewereencouragedbythelargenumberofattendeesatourfinalmeetingoftheyearonApril21whereweelectedofficersforthenextacademicyear.Springer/Franklinplanstoinductanincreasednumberofnewmembersfor2011‐2012.

Assetforthbyfederalguidelines,wemustensurethat75%ofprogramparticipantswillpersistfromoneacademicyeartothenext.Basedondatafrom09/10to10/11,theSSSretentionrateofparticipantswas80%.Therefore,weachievedthisobjective.ThisobjectivewasmetthroughacademicservicesprovidedbySSS.FromtheinitialTripleIPlanningReport,weanticipatedimplementinganewonlineversionofourprogressreport.Theprogressreportisonemeasureofpersistenceattheinstitution.Itgivesprofessorsanopportunitytoletusknowhowourparticipantsaredoinginclassesandallowsusanopportunitytocontactthemregardingtheirprogress.Intryingtoimplementthetotallyonlineversion,weranintotechnical/securityissues.Therefore,wehadtoimprovisewithapartialonlineform.Althoughitisnotwhatweinitiallyenvisioned,theimprovisedmethodworkedwellandyieldedmorefeedbackthanwenormallyreceive.Inthefuture,IwouldliketotakemeasurestoworkmorecloselywithCarmenintheRetentionOfficetostreamlinethisprocessandalsopossiblymaketheprogressreportavailabletoinstructorsthroughMyGate(muchliketheavailabilityoftheRetentionAlertform).

Duringthefallsemester,SSSimplementedanEmergingLeaderProgram.Eightstudentswerechosentoparticipateintheinauguralgroup.OurgoalwastoconductacommunityserviceprojectthatwouldinvolvetheEmergingLeadersandtheentireSSSpopulation.Thisgoalwasmetduringthespringsemester.Throughoutthefallandspringsemesters,theEmergingLeadersgroupmettoconductbusinessanddiscussleadershipdevelopment.Additionally,thegroupelectedtoworkwiththeCallowayCountyHumaneSocietytoconductanadoptiondrive.ThegrouppromotedtheeventwithinSSSandoneSaturdayduringthespring,fiveemergingleaders,sixSSSparticipants,andtwostaffmettotakephotosofadoptablepets,givebaths,andhangpostersthroughoutthecommunity.Althoughthegroupwassmall,weconsideredtheeventasuccessandtheHumaneSocietywasappreciativeofthesupport.Inthefuture,IwouldliketoseetheEmergingLeadersbranchoutintothecommunityanddomorethanoneprojectandreallypromotetheeventswithinSSSandperhapsthecampuscommunitytohavealargescalecommunityproject.

Innovation DiningServicesandtheUniversityStorewillcollaborateonanextensiveSecretShopperProgramincooperationwithGlenMangoldoftheMarketingandBusinessDepartment.
TheSecretShopperSurveywasdeveloped,butthefocusgroupwasuncomfortableshoppingandscoringthedepartmentsofthebookstorethattheywereunfamiliarwithorthattheywouldnotnormallyshop.Alistofeverydayquestionswasdevelopedforeachdepartment,buttheyrequestedtheprojecthaveafreshstartintheFall2011semester.OnAugust15,IamtomeetwithGlennMangold.Hewillintroducemetoanotherprofessorthathefeelscanpossiblyusethisasaclassproject.HesuggestedthatImeetwiththestudentstodevelopaplanandansweranyquestionstheymayhave,whereoriginallyweweretryingtokeepthemanonymous.IfeelthatIcaneasetheirconcernsaboutshoppinginareasandaskingquestionsaboutproductsandservicestheyareunfamiliarwith.ThenextstepwillbetoaskourStudentAdvisoryBoardtohelpwiththeproject.

Topreparefirstgenerationhighschoolstudentsforasuccessfultransitionintopostsecondaryeducation.
Eightypercentofthe2010‐2011UpwardBoundstudentsattendingSaturdayCollegemeetingswillparticipateinwritingworkshops.WorkshopswillbeconductedduringmonthlySaturdayColleges,AugustthruMarch,foratotalofsevenmeetings.Studentswillresearch,writeortype,andsubmittheirworkduringSaturdayColleges.Therewillberoomforimprovementbaseduponstaffcritic,peerreview,self‐reflection,andgroupdiscussion.Staffcriticwilloccurduringandaftermeetings,allowingforcorrectionsandthendiscussedwithstudentsatthenextSaturdayCollege.Completion‐100%ofstudentsparticipatedinsomeformofwritingworkshop.Studentsdiddifferentactivitiesbasedupontheassignedproject.Timewasallowedforstudentstocompletetheassignmentduringthemeetingtime.Staffthenevaluatedthewrittenwork,correctedit,madesuggestions,andreturnedittothestudentsatthenextmeeting.OurJanuarymeetingwascancelledduetoweather.Studentsparticipatedinwritingassignmentssixtimesthisacademicyear.Studentsinvolvedinthesummerprogramareincorporatingwritingintotheirclassestheyaretaking.IknowtheyareutilizingtheirwritingskillsintheReadingclassalongwiththeircareerclassandsomeoftheirothercourses.

AninventorycountofparkingspaceusageintheResidentialCollegeparkinglotswascompletedinMayof2011bythestudentsofacampusLandUsePlanningcourse.ThisdatawillbeutilizedalongwithadditionaldatafromFMinventoriesandHousing/PublicSafetyparkingdatatodeveloptheResidentialCollegeMasterPlan.ThegoalisstilltohavethiscompletedpriortotheFall2011semester.

Innovation Innovation WhiteCollegesponsoredaCollegeWritingSeriesinthefallof2010tointroducefreshmentotheconventionsofacademicwritingandcriticalthinking.Themainpurposewastointroducestudentstotheconventionsofacademicwritingandcriticalthinking.Thegoalwastogivethemenoughpracticewritingsothattheywouldbecomemoreeffectivewritersbytheendofthesemesterthantheywereatthestart.100%ofstudentsmadeadequateprogress.Twentyfivestudentswereenrolled.Outoftwentyfive,nineteenstudentsscored90‐100,andsixstudentsscored80‐89.Studentquestionnairewasusedtoevaluatethecourse.92%ofstudentssaidthatthefacultywasveryeffectiveinteachingthiscourse.96%ofstudentssaidthatthefacultystimulatedtheirinterestinthesubject.88%ofstudentswouldchoosetotakeanotherCollegeWritingCourseinthefallof2011,whereas12%wouldnot.

WhiteCollegesponsoredaSexualAssaultAwarenessPrograminthefallsemester.Participantswereencouragedtovoicetheirviewsandconcernsonthesubjectandengagedinactivitiesinordertounderstandsexualassault.58studentsandfacultyparticipated.Thegoaloftheworkshopwastoprovidestudentswithavailableresourcesandassistanceinimplementingandexecutingsexualassaultpreventionandresponsepolicies.Preliminaryevaluationshowedpromisingresultsregardingincreaseinparticipants’likelihoodtosaytheywouldmakechangesincommunityandbewillingtointerruptininstancesofsexualharassment.Theprogramwasscientificallyevaluatedand92%ofstudentssaidthattheprogramwasveryeffectiveregardingchangesinknowledge,attitudesandbehavior.

WhiteCollegeofferedaFocusProgram(Cookout,SlipandSlide,ScavengerHunt,andIceCreamSocialetc.)duringGreatBeginningsandintheearlyweeksoffallsemestertohelpnewstudentsbecomeacquaintedwithreturningstudentsandfaculty/staff.Thegoalsweretoexpandopportunitiesforfreshmenandsophomorestomeetmoreupper‐classstudentsandgraduatestudentsandtoparticipateinabroaderrangeofcollege‐basedacademicandnonacademicprograms.254students,faculty,parents,alumni,andcommutersparticipated.Thepurposesweretofacilitatestudenttransitionsintotheacademicandsocialcommunitiesoftheuniversityandtopromotestudentgrowthandleadership.Overall,3oftheprograms(allofwhichwereevaluatedwithexperimentalresearchdesigns)thatfocusedonimprovingsocialskillshadameasurablebeneficialimpact,butsomeprogramsweremoreeffectivethanothers.Asophomoresaid,“Residentialcollegesmaybeagoodoptionformeetingstudentsaswellascreatingincreasedchancesofgraduationforcollegestatistics.”

Weweretostartresearchinganddevelopingcurriculumguidesandoutreachthisspringandweareonlyjustnowbeginning.Afirstinitiativeisaongoingsetof90secondmodulesofJazzHistorytoprecedeourweeknightprogramCafeJazzandtobepostedonlineatwww.wkms.org.Secondlywe'vebeeninvitedtopresentaprogramforFutureEducatorsAssociationvisitorsoncampusforwhichwearedevelopingamoduleforteacherstousedevelopingalessonplaninwritingfromasegmentofanNPRarchivedbroadcast.Thiswillbeginourrealworkincreatinganapproachtousingpublicradiointheclassroom.

1.Materialswerereceivedandredflagsdistributedinincreasingnumbersacrosscampusforaweekpriortotheinnovativeprogram"CrazyinLove."Aspeopleexitedtheprogram,weaskediftheyhadseentheredflagsacrosscampus.Mostparticipantsresponded"yes."Theprojectwasexplainedandstudentswereaskedtoshareany"redflags"theyhadnotedintheprogramtheyhadjustexperienced.Everyonewasabletolistseveralsignsofanincreasinglyunhealthyrelationship.Theweekaftertheprogramwepostedpostersallacrosscampusthatrevealed"redflags"associatedwithunhealthyrelationships.2."CrazyinLove"wasAMAZING.428students,faculty,staff,andadministratorsattended.Thewrittenresponsestotheprogramindicatedincreasedsensitivitytovictimsaswellasincreasedunderstandingofthedynamicsofanabusiverelationship.Manyofthe

1.SevenwomenresidingintheareashelterforbatteredwomencametotheCenteranddecoratedt‐shirtstoraiseawarenessoftheimpactthatbatteringhashadontheirlivesandanadditionaltwelveshirtswereprovidedtotheareaoutreachcenterswheretheirclientsdecoratedshirtsandbroughtthemtotheWomen'scentertobeaddedtotheClotheslineProject.2.Onehighschoolclass,eightgirlsinthelocalgirls'grouphome,andnineclientsoflocaldomesticviolencesheltersandoutreachcenters"toured"the"CrazyinLove"program.Inaddition,twelvepeoplesawpublicityfortheprogramandcametoseeit.Whilewedidnotreachasmanycommunitymembersaswehadhoped,wewerepleasedthatwewereabletoreach53localteensandcommunitymembers.3.Wedidnotaccomplishthislastobjectivebutwillrenewoureffortsthisfall.Wesentoutinvitationstoofficialsonandoff‐campus,invitingthemtoattendapreviewoftheexhibitonSundayafternoonpriortotheofficialopeningonMondayafternoonbutnooneattended.

1."RoomwithaView,"theinteractive,engagingwalk‐throughprograminanoldresidentialcollegewascompletelyrevampedinFeb.2011.Theprogramwasdesignedtoshowthecourseofadevelopingeatingdisorderandtosensitizeparticipantstothecomplexity&multiplecausalfactorsthatcontributetothedevelopmentoftheseserious,life‐threateningmentalillnesses.Inaddition,weaddedanartgallerycomprisedofartcreatedbyindividualsintreatmentattheRenfrewCenterinBrentwood,TN.AstudentwhoworksintheWomen'sCentercreatedan18‐minutedidthatprovidedparticipantswithadditionalinformationaboutthecomplexityofanorexiaandbulimiaandtheirfar‐reachingimpactonsufferersandthosewholovethem.2.Threefacultymembers(innursing,genderanddiversitystudies,andnutrition)broughttheirclassestotheprogramandmanyfacultymembersofferedextracredittothestudentswhoattended.Evaluationsoftheprogramindicatedthatthepreviousobjectivewasaccomplished.3.Oneresidentialhalldirectorsandfiveresidentadvisorsplannedstaff
