ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Dodgers, winners of six in a row and
eight of their last nine games, tonight begin a seven-game road trip with
the first of four contests against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Los Angeles is a
season-high eight games over .500 and its six-game winning streak is the
club’s longest since winning seven consecutive contests April 12-19,
2015. Following the series in the Burgh, the Dodgers will travel to
Milwaukee on Monday and kick off a three-game series with the
Brewers Tuesday night.
GAME OF STREAKS: The Dodgers were 1-5 against the Pirates last
year and the Buccos have actually won 11 of their last 14 games vs. Los
Angeles. Prior to this run by Pittsburgh, the Dodgers had won 19 of 23
against the Pirates. Both clubs have been among the best in baseball over
the last four seasons:
Highest Win Pct Since 2013 — MLB
Cardinals 325-232 .583
Dodgers 319-241 .570
Pirates 314-245 .562
Royals 308-249 .553
Nationals 308-251 .551
SOURCE: STATS, LLC
CARDIAC KIDS: The Dodgers’ thrilling win on Wednesday night was
already their 22nd comeback victory of the season, which is tied with the
Orioles for the second most in the Major Leagues, trailing only Texas.
Last year, the Dodgers had 35 come-from-behind wins all season.
Los Angeles has won its last four one-run games, improving to
12-13 overall in those contests.
BATS HAVE RISEN: The Dodgers averaged 4.6 runs per game on the
seven-game homestand, collecting 22 extra-base hits (11 doubles, 11
home runs) and going 13-for-38 (.342) with runners in scoring position.
Howie Kendrick has hit safely in eight of his last nine games,
batting .400 (10-for-25) with two doubles, a homer and two
RBI since June 13.
Corey Seager hit safely in all seven games on the homestand
(.414, 12-for-29, four doubles and a homer) and tops NL
shortstops in hits and runs, while ranking among the position
leaders in home runs (2nd), RBI (T-2rd), batting average (2nd)
and slugging pct. (2nd).
On Wednesday, Dodger second baseman Chase Utley became
the 13th active player to score 1,000 runs. Utley is the first to
accomplish the milestone in a Dodger uniform since Devon
White on May 5, 1999.
Dodger first baseman Adrián González has been driving the
Pirates crazy during the course of his career:
Active Players, Highest Career OPS vs. Pirates
(minimum 150 PA; current team listed)
Albert Pujols, LAA 1.121
Hanley Ramirez, BOS .994
Geovany Soto, LAA .986
Adrián González, LAD .984

THIS GOOD, THIS FAST: Amazingly, Corey Seager is just third
among shortstops in the NL All-Star balloting. Through 100 career
games, Seager has a .301 batting average with 20 home runs and 64 runs
scored. According to Elias, in the last 60 years, only four other players
had a .300 batting average with at least 20 homers and 60 runs scored in
their first 100 games in the majors: Orlando Cepeda (.316 BA, 20 HR,
61 R in 1958), Carlton Fisk (.301, 20, 60 from 1969 to 1972), Wally
Joyner (.313, 21, 60 in 1986) and Ryan Braun (.323, 30, 78 in 2007).
Fans can vote for starters a total of 35 times online at
Dodgers.com/vote, including a maximum of five valid ballots
cast in any 24-hour period. Voting ends in just eight days,
Thursday, June 30 at 8:59 p.m. PT.
HOMER HAPPY: The Dodgers have homered in a season-high 13
consecutive games since June 10, marking the first time the club has
done so since 2001, when they had a 13 (July 13-25) and 14-game (June
10-26) home run streak.
Los Angeles leads the NL with 32 home runs this month, two
ahead of Washington, Chicago and Colorado. Washington has
the longest home run streak in the Majors this year, a 14-game
run from May 26-June 10 - Source: Stats, LLC.
A DODGER DEBUT: Prior to the game tonight, the Dodgers purchased
the contract of right-handed pitcher Nick Tepesch (No. 48) and
designated outfielder Will Venable for assignment. Tepesch will make
his 40th-career start tonight (43rd game) and first as a Dodger. The
Missouri native was signed by the Dodgers on June 6 and went 3-0 with
a 2.00 ERA in three starts with Oklahoma City, including his last start,
June 17 at New Orleans, when he allowed just one run on three hits and
struck out eight in 8.0 innings. Tepesch began the season with the
Rangers’ Triple-A Round Rock and has posted a 7-2 combined record
with a 3.66 ERA in 14 minor league starts this year.
Tepesch made his big league debut with the Rangers in 2013
and went 9-17 with a 4.56 ERA in 42 games (39 starts) with
Texas from 2013-14 before missing the 2015 season on the
disabled list with nerve inflammation in his right arm. He was
selected by the Rangers in the 14th round of the 2010 First-Year
Player Draft out of the University of Missouri.
ANSWERING THE BELL: The Dodger bullpen has allowed just one
run in its last four games (11.2 IP) and leads the National League with a
3.00 ERA (77 ER/231.0 IP, 2nd MLB), a .201 opponents’ batting average
(1st MLB) and a 1.06 combined WHIP (1st MLB).
Adam Liberatore has not allowed a run in his last 18 games
(13.1 IP) since May 20 and has tossed scoreless relief in 31 of
32 games with the Dodgers this year.
Kenley Jansen has tossed scoreless relief in 29 of 32 games
this year and ranks among the National League relief leaders
in saves (21, 3rd), WHIP (0.69, 2nd), opponents’ batting average
(.163, 10th) and ERA (1.48, T-3rd).
DOING GLOVEWORK: By defensive efficiency, which measures
turning balls in play into outs, the Dodgers rank second in the Majors,
trailing only the Cubs, with a .714 efficiency rating. The club’s .988
fielding percentage is tied for second in the Majors.
GLORY DAYS: The Los Angeles Dodgers will salute the tri-MVPs of
the 1981 World Championship - Ron Cey, Pedro Guerrero and Steve
Yeager – at their annual Old-Timers Game on Saturday, July 2. Cey,
Guerrero and Yeager will be joined by Dodger greats Sandy Koufax,
Tommy Lasorda, Don Newcombe, Tommy Davis, Maury Wills,
Fernando Valenzuela, Orel Hershiser, Steve Garvey, Steve Sax, Bill
Russell and Nomar Garciaparra. The Old-Timers’ batting practice will
begin at 4:00 p.m., followed by introductions at 5:00 p.m. and then the
two-inning game. The Dodgers and Rockies square off at 7:10 p.m. and
the first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive a bobblehead featuring
the tri-MVPs presented by Security Benefit.
HE DONE GOOD: Today marks the 61st anniversary of Sandy
Koufax’s Major League debut in 1955, when he struck out two in 2.0
scoreless innings of relief for the Dodgers at Milwaukee.
On this date in 1947, Jackie Robinson stole home for the first
of 19 times for the Dodgers at Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field.
SIGN RIGHT HERE: The Dodgers have signed three additional
selections from the 2016 draft, fifth-round left-handed pitcher Devin
Smeltzer out of San Jacinto College-North, 11th-rounder AJ Alexy, a
right-handed pitcher out of Twin Valley High School, and 35th-rounder
Nick Yarnall, a first baseman out of University of Pittsburgh. Los
Angeles has now signed 25 of its 42 selections, including 10 of its top
12 picks from the 2016 draft.
