The Volvo 240 Seriesnew reliable products for today's society
he 197 5 Volvo 240 Series - Two and four door sedans. And astation wagon. They represent Volvo's greatest investment in newfeatures and modifications to enhance safety, strength, durability andeconomy. And quality. The innovation in their design is represented bytheir new product designation: Volvo 240 Series.
We haven't changed the designation completely, however, because thisnew generation still contains the best of Volvo's well known features
such as: the steel safety cage surrounding the passenger area, the energyabsorbing front and rear ends, the triangle-split dual braking system, thethorough rust-proofing (even better this year), the safer fuel tank loca-tion, the reliable B20 engine.
But the rest, and the most is new:

used but rather they letters "DL". This new Volvo programme is aimed atthe modern car buyer who places safety and real comfort at the head ofhis list, - these are customers who make sure that the car they buy iseconomical to run, reliable to use and a pleasure to own. Exterior
he simplest way to describe the exterior of the240 Series is to say - it is a completely new Volvo from thewindshield forwards. And you must agree with us when wesay that this exterior radiates power, smartness, safety.
It is obviously related to the previous models, but primarilyto the Volvo Experimental Safety Car, VESC, (this can beseen from the grille and the bumper section), and, in thisway, it can be seen right away from the exterior of the
Volvo 240 Series that the design of this car is backed up byqualified safety thinking.
Naturally the styling has not been based on the fact thatVolvo has wanted to build a smarter car but rather on a tech-nical basis. An advanced front suspension has resulted innatural body changes. The exterior of the 240 Series willarouse a great deal of justified curiosity and a desire to knowmore among car-buyers. You must utilize this in your saleswork.

The front section on this year's modelextends out to the very powerfulenergy absorbing bumpers which nowmerge well with the overall design ofthe car. A Volvo body consists of a
small number of large sections whichmakes it light, strong and torsionallyresistant.
Forward of the windshield, the body isnew and naturally of safety type withenergy absorbing sections front andrear.
The engine hood, front fenders, wheelhousings, side members and bulkheadare the body sections which have beenaltered. The floor has also been alteredby the inclusion of much stronger seat
lifters which help to strengthen thefloorpan.
The energy absorbing ability of thenew front section of the body hasbeen made much more efficient by theinclusion of crumple zones.
A study in elegance and safety. Thegrille is manufactured of a very durableplastic material and has chromium
brightwork and a decorative emblem,the headlights are recessed into thebody. The turn indicators and parkinglights also merge with the attractivelines of the car. The bumper, whichcarries a facing of rubber, is manu-factured of aluminium and is attachedto the body by means of shock absor-bers. The frontal design of the carclearly shows its family ties with theVESC (Volvo Experimental SafetyCar).

The energy-absorbing bumpers nowextend "round-the-corner" but, ofcourse, are still capable of absorbing
impact at speeds up to S miles perhour. The front turn indicators are
large and easily seen. They are recessedinto the body but also extend "round-the-corner" to enable immediate
observance from the sides as well.
The Volvo 240 DL has 14" wheels andsteel cord radial ply tires. These widetires give an excellent ride and good
grip. Another advantage is less weardue to the wide tread and the specialcharacteristics of the steel cord radialply tires.
To make changing easier, it is nowdone from the front of the car. Theheadlight insert is quickly removedand replaced without any trouble andthe adjustment is not altered.
This is the decorative emblem whichshows model, type and engine.

Prepared for anything. Yes, even acrash from the rear. The rear bumperhas the same energy-absorbing capa-
bility as the front bumper and, hereagain, it extends "round-the-corner".These bumpers are not only efficient,they give the car a tough, yet elegantappearance.

Volvo rust-proofing has been one ofthe best available for many years. front seats.Many items which are standard in a Volvo 240 DL are onlyoffered as extras - at extra cost - by other manufacturers,for example : the head restraints, now built into the seat andof the "see-through" type so as not to spoil the view for theback seat passengers. The ultimate of modern design, anato-mically correct and ensuring safetyand comfort. This is a good descrip-tion of the new front seats featured inall Volvo models. The sitting face ofthe seats is the same length as lastyear's but they are narrower and havea firmer padding. Their narrower de-sign facilitates entry and the firmerpadding used guarantees comfortabledriving even on the longest of trips.Last, but not least, the attractive up-
holstery is available in a number ofcolours and is fire resistant.
The new Volvo seats not only ensurethat you sit safety and comfortably.They also make sure that you sit cor-rectly since medical experts have parti-cipated in their des ign. Naturally,Volvo seats have head restraints asstandard.
The V olvo seats are built up around avery strong frame of pressed profilesand tubular members. They are verysecurely anchored to the floor and canwithstand a load which is far higherthan current requirements.

The Volvo seats combine safety withcomfort. On the driver's side, the seatcan be adjusted 1.4 inches in height bymeans of two levers, one at the front,one at the rear. There are three heightpositions which combine with thefront and rear adjustment possibilitiesto give nine different combinations.On the passenger side, the seat heightis adjusted with tools.

Fore and aft movement of the frontseats is no less than 8.4 inches split upinto 18 different positions. The seatsare moved by operating a lever whichruns below the leading edge of theseats. For long legged people, bothfront seats can be moved back on theirglide rails an additional 8 inches.
Both front seats have a better lumbarsupport this year with an extra strongspring. The lumbar support is adjustedby means of a knob. Seat backrestangles are adjustable from 90 ap-

. This is done bymeans of a wheel.
On the two-door model, the front seatbackrests are folded forward by meansof a one-hand control lever which isplaced high up on the side of the back-rest where it is easily used.

The heating and ventilation system isone of the most exclusive features ofthe 240 Series. And this year it is evenmore effective through the addition oftwo extra outlets.

The centre console below the dash-board carries the switches controllingthe four-way hazard warning lights andthe electrically heated rear window.There is also a rheostat which controlsinstrument lighting. The "fasten seatbelts" reminder now both looks and
sounds a little different. This panelalso carries the controls for the heatingand ventilation system as well as acigarette lighter and an ashtray. Thefan switch and cigarette lighter nowhave a more functional design. There isalso room in the centre console for thefitting of a radio. This room can beused for storage if a radio is not fitted.
The new outlet nozzles are variablyadjustable from wide open to closed.The two new nozzles are located at theouter extremities of the dashboard andare aimed at the side windows. Theyhave a smaller aperture than the othernozzles so as to give a more intensiveflow of air. This keeps the side
windows free from misting. The flowof air through these nozzles is control-led by means of the "DEF" control onthe centre console.
It's cool in the summer and warm inthe winter in a Volvo 242/244 DLthanks to the new headlining whichconsists of form-pressed glassfibrewool which has an attractive whitefacing. Not only does the new head-lining mean greater safety and betterinsulation, it's also easier to clean and

The handbrake is now located in aconsole between the front seats whereit is easily reached. The same consolecarries the safety belt locks which are
lighted. The safety belt lockingtongues are easily pushed into placeand just as easily released by pushingon a button. At the rear of the sameconsole, facing the rear seat passen-gers, is an ashtray with built-in illumi-nation.
The Volvo 240 Series has inertia reelfront safety belts as standard. They arevery easily used and not only adjustautomatically but allow the wearer tomove. Volvo knows the value ofwearing safety belts, which is why a
'fasten seat belt" reminder tells thedriver and front seat passenger to doso if they forget. The safety belt locksare illuminated. These exclusive feat-ures are clear indications of the con-sideration Volvo takes to the carowner and his passenger.
The rear seat passengers can easilyreach the ashtray in its new locationbetween the front seats. The built-inillumination is also a welcome addi-tion.

he awareness of the present day car consumer meansthat he or she expects a great deal of a car engine - require-ments which may seem almost impossible to meet on allpoints. An engine must be reliable and quiet. It should pro-vide high performance, good economy and durability. To thiscan be added the requirements from the authorities - todayan engine must have efficient exhaust emission control.
Volvo's 240 Series is powered by an engine which can meet
all of these requirements. It is called the B20 F. With fuelinjection and transistorized ignition the B20 F engine isideally equipped to help you attract more and more cus-tomers from the competition.

The B20 F is an in-line engine of2 litres displacement. It develops amaximum output of 98 hp SAE net at6000 rpm, maximum torque is 110 ft.lbs. at 3500 rpm. With a compressionratio of 8.7:1, it's designed to run onregular grade gasoline.
The B20 F has a transistorized (solidstate) ignition system without breakerpoints. This means constant com-bustion, longer life and less adjust-
ment.
The B20 F engine is fitted with a fuelinjection system of C.I. (ContinuousInjection) type. The amount of fuelinjected is regulated by the amount ofair passing into the engine. This en-sures the correct fuel/air mixtureunder all operating conditions.
Transparent tanks allow the checkingof coolant, hydraulic fluid and wind-shield washer fluid levels at a glance.
The Vo lvo B20 F engine is watercooled and has a sealed system. Thismeans that the coolant fluid andother additives can be used all yearround without any special changesbeing necessary. This type of systemoperates under pressure which meansthat the coolant can reach a tempera-ture of 212 F without boiling.

The B20 F engine is matched to theM 40 or M 41 manual gearboxes, or
the BW 35 automatic. The manualgearboxes have an improved gear levermechanism this year with a two-partgearbox cover with rubber insulationto cut noise.

We do not intend tolist the new features of the 1975 Volvos on their order ofimportance - that would be too big a task, but one thing iscertain. The new running gear components are among themost sensational improvements. For example, these cars havea brand new front wheel suspension, an improved rear wheel
suspension, an entirely new steering mechanism and an im-proved brake system.

The 1975 Volvo 240 Series has aspring strut front suspension. Theupper anchorages of these spring strutsare carried in rubber-mountedbearings. The lower ends of the springstruts are carried in ball joints andcontrol arms. These are journalled inthe front and side members. Plainlyspeaking, the spring strut consists of atube which carries the coil spring andincludes the shock absorber. This type
of front suspension gives excellentroad handling.
The only forces acting on the balljoints come from the stabilizer. Thecontrol arm bushings are carried inspecial rubber mounting points de-signed to enable a certain degree ofl ongitudinal wheel movement whichgives compliance to the radial ply tires.

At the rear, the 240 Series has beeni mproved by moving the support armsfurther outboard towards the wheels.This gives a better location of the rearaxle. Improved stability and lowernoise are the result of the new
mounting points for the torque rodsand the better type of rubber used inall bearings. On the sedan models, therear suspension also has a stabilizer.This is not necessary on the stationwagon models which have a stiffersuspension.
The spring strut front suspension andthe much improved rear suspension
give these new Volvo cars excellentride and road holding. The front sus-
pension efficiently absorbs road shockcaused by joints in the road and bodyroll, when cornering hard, is consider-ably reduced. The extensive modifica-
tion of the rear axle harmonizes itsresponse to the new front suspensionand not only improves road holding,but also gives a much more comfort-able ride. This highly contributes toincrease the accident prevention safety(active safety).

The Volvo 240 Series has a new
steering system of rack and piniontype. The steering column is of safetytype and includes a number of jointswhich are designed to collapse underheavy load. The front track is now55.8 inches, an increase which hasconsiderably improved road holding.The steering angles are still positive.To improve entry and exit, the angleof the steering wheel has been in-
creased to 23 . The Volvo cars stillslightly understeer.
The steering gear is of rack and piniontype and the steering gear is attachedto the front member by means of rub-ber mounts. It has been possible toreduce the number of steering jointsfrom 10 to 6. By means of this simpleconstruction, and lesser number of
joints, servicing and maintenance aresimplified.
Less road shock is transplanted to thesteering wheel due to the use of rubbermounts in the steering column, the
steering gear and the attachment ofthe gearbox housing. All of thesefeatures combine to give more exactsteering with better response andgreater directional stability.
The steering column includes anumber of joints which "give" underload. Due to the new angle of thesteering column, the two-part joint hasbeen replaced by a universal joint. Inthe event of a collision, the followingtakes place : the lower section of thesteering column is pushed to the side,the steering wheel aligns to the driver'sbody by means of the built-in crumplezone and the steering column collapses
due to its telescopic section and slip-type mounting points. You are wellcared for when driving a Volvo.
Although the cars of the Volvo 240Series are 4.7 inches longer this year,overall length being 192.6 inches, theturning circle is still very tight - only32'2" feet between curbs.

Volvo cars have disc brakes all round.This year, the 240 Series has 14"wheels which means that brake discdiameter is slightly smaller. This iscompensated for by increasing thecapacity of the brake servo system, a8 x2 booster being used. The brakepads are also of an entirely new typewhich gives longer life. The Volvodisc brakes combine safety, qualityand economy in a way only Volvo canachieve.

This is a unique Volvo feature - the
dual circuit, triangle-split brake systemwhich guarantees about 80% ofbraking power even if one circuit isentirely out of operation. What isprobably the best brake system avail-able has been made even better bymeans of the new master cylinderwhich is now of the stepped-bore type.It gives braking effect much quickerand the load needed on the pedal isapproximately the same as when bothcircuits are functioning.
Volvo is first in introducing the step-ped-bore master cylinder.
The new handbrake has not only 'abetter location, it has also been im-proved with regard to quality andreliability. The smaller wheels have
required the brake drum diameter tobe altered from 7.1 inches to6.3 inches. This reduction has been
compensated for by increasing theoperating ratio of the system and byincreasing the coefficient of friction of
the brake shoes. The handbrake cablesrunning to the rear wheels are entirelycovered in and therefore fully pro-tected.
