Established in 2004 by friends Roelf van der Merwe and George
Robertson, VanderMerwe & Robertson Incorporated prides itself
on providing excellent and professional services to its diverse and
growing client base.
Our attorneys are business-minded and focused on providing
pragmatic and innovative commercial solutions to business and
related legal issues.
VanderMerwe & Robertson’s head office is located in Durbanville in
Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs. Its Gauteng office is located in
Hyde Park, Johannesburg and their Cape Town Office is located
in Cape Town’s CBD, at 39 Adderly Street.
The firm has a nationwide client base that includes banks,
property developers, building contractors, insurance companies,
brokers, manufacturers, mining groups, corporate finance and
investment advisory houses, wealth management companies
and other corporate clients, as well as the Provincial and National
Government.
Over the past twelve years VanderMerwe & Robertson has
become a dynamic firm focusing on commercial matters and
is currently represented on the panels of the major financial
institutions, being Standard Bank, ABSA, FNB, Nedbank,
Nedbank Private Wealth and ABSA Private Banking for the
registration and cancellation of bonds.

Since the turn of the century, legislative change has rapidly
swept the property market, affecting land use, planning and
development, tenant debt, municipal services, transfer duties
and deeds registration, among others. Our practice provides

ARBITRATION AND MEDIATION OF COMMERCIAL DEPUTIES
Arbitration is a popular and widely used method of commercial
dispute resolution. We expect a new International Arbitration
Act will be enacted in 2016 and that the modernisation of our
arbitration law will stimulate the growth of South Africa as a major
arbitration centre for the region. Senior members of our team are
able to act as arbitrators in commercial arbitrations. We also
provide alternative dispute resolution services, in the form of
mediation of commercial disputes.
COMMERCIAL RECOVERIES
Our team includes attorneys experienced in high-level and complex
restructurings and turnarounds, informal and formal business rescue
and recovery proceedings. We assist with restructuring, in addition to
managing complex business rescue, insolvency and litigation proceedings.
Specific services include:

ROELF VAN DER MERWE(Director)
Roelf attended the University of Stellenbosch where he obtained
a B.Econ degree, majoring in Political Science and Economics,
and obtained his LLB. Degree through UNISA. Roelf specialises
in commercial work, insurance law and conveyancing and holds
a Certificate in Advanced Commercial Law from LSSA & ISLP.
Roelf acts as the co-principal of VanderMerwe & Robertson
Properties and is the chairman of both the Governing Body at
Durbanville Primary School and of the Durbanville Business
Chamber.

EUGENE GROENEWALD(Director)
Eugene obtained both BSc(Hons) and LLB degrees and
has completed programmes in insurance practice, advanced
insurance practice, and the International Certificate in Risk
Management through the Institute of Risk Management
in London, and is currently in the process of completing
the International Diploma in Risk Management through the same
Institute. He specialises in commercial work and more particularly
commercial law, insolvency law and insurance law. Eugene is a
member and past-president of the Rotary Club of Durbanville and
sits on the management committee of the Durbanville Athletics
Club.

GEORGE ROBERTSON(Director)
George obtained BSc and LLB degrees and a Post Graduate
Diploma in Tax Law from the University of Stellenbosch, as well
as a CFP (Certified Financial Planning) Diploma from the University
of the Free State. George is a Conveyancer and Notary, and
specialises in commercial work, conveyancing and trust law.
George is the Chief Executive Officer of Galileo Advisory Services,
a division of Galileo Capital.

CATHERINE LOUW(Consultant)
Catherine holds BA and LLB degrees from the University of
Stellenbosch. She was admitted as Advocate and joined the staff
of the Attorney General in Pietermaritzburg as a State Advocate.
She moved to Cape Town where she was admitted as an
attorney and conveyancer. Catherine specialises in conveyancing
and also serves on the panel of examiners for the Conveyancing
Practice Examinations for the Cape Law Society.

Morné is a Chartered Accountant and completed his SAICA articles at Baker Tilly Greenwoods. He obtained both his BCom and BCom Honours degree in Chartered Accounting at the North-West University Potchefstroom.
RENETTE MAIJ
Renette is the team leader of the conveyancing department, she obtained her LLB degree at UNISA and is currently finalising her admission as Attorney and Conveyancer.
MICHELLE RIDDLES
Michelle completed her National Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting at CPUT and has 7 years’ experience at one of the Big 4 firms in South Africa.
JEAN-CLAUDE WESSELS
Jean-Claude is a candidate attorney within our Commercial and Litigation department. He completed his LLB degree at the University of the Free State.

Galileo Advisory Services, a division of Galileo Capital, assists its
clients with a unique personal and/or family plan to protect and
preserve their wealth. It focuses on putting the necessary
structures in place to manage and protect its clients’ wealth.
Services include the drafting of wills, drafting and registration of
trusts, administration of estates and trust administration. Galileo
Advisory Services also specializes in accounting and tax
services. It has two Cape Town offices, in Durbanville and
Rondebosch, as well as an office in East London and in Hyde
Park, Johannesburg.

THE VISUAL PROPERTY CLUB
The VanderMerwe & Robertson Group joined forces with Visual
International Holdings Ltd. to establish The Visual Property Club,
with the primary focus of facilitating the sales process of properties
to high net worth individuals in terms of Section 13 of the SA
Income Tax Act 58 of 1962, as amended.
The concept is registered at the Patent Office under RSA patent
number 2012/03640.
The directors of VanderMerwe & Robertson Inc. own 50% of the

DURBANVILLE ATHLETICS CLUB
VanderMerwe & Robertson is actively involved in the communities in
which it serves. It is sole sponsor of the Durbanville Athletics Club
and has recently been honoured with the Durbanville Business
