Walking

REQUIREMENT RESEARCH FICTION STRUCTURE DESIGN DEMOMAPPING

The project maps walking on religion as its metaphor to rethink this daily activity. The design is an iPhone app. It allows users imagine the Church of Walking and guide their walking by audio instruction in order to enhance walking experience.

ART AND STUDY OF WALKING: ① Rebecca Solnit. "Wanderlust: A History of Walking"(Left) ② Janet Cardiff. “Her Long Black Hair” (2004), Central Park(Upper right) ③ Guy Debord. The situationists’ theory - “Dérive” (1940s-1950s)(Lower right)

Audio instruction and minimal interface reduce interaction with digital media in order to guarantee concentration on the real world experience.

SCENARIO: LAUNCH + STATUS + MUSIC

“Get a new function-showing status. There are three status-walking, stop and transportation. keep walking status for a while will get reward. keep stop status for a while will get punishment. keep transportation status will get double punishment.”

“Headphone's plugged in. Now start walking.”

“Get a new function-playing religious music and a new piece of music. Music will play automatically from your collection. Click music button to check your collection."

Users draw the symbol of the Church to launch the app rather than seeing the standardized symbol. It emphasizes individuality in walking spirit.

SCENARIO: RELIGION STUDY

“Get a new religion fact: walking is far more meaningful than its benefit on physical health.”

“Get a new religion fact: walking is not an inefficient way of moving from one place to another in a city.”

“Get a new religion fact: walking in city is an activity calling for individuality and against mainstream and the standardized industrialized society."

SCENARIO: PUNISHMENT + FORGIVENESS

“Music function is blocked."

"A piece of music is deleted."

"Music function is resumed."

SCENARIO: INVISIBLE CHAPEL

“Now it's your turn to talk in the chapel. Leave your message after the beep sound. After recording, click the chapel button to leave the chapel.”

"I just passed by a bus stop on my way to school. I'm lucky. Today is not extremely cold so I can still walk. It will be miserable if I get on that crowded bus..."

“Congratulations! You find an invisible chapel. Now you can stay for a while to hear what others said in the chapel.”

“It sounds like I'm the second one who discover this chapel. I pass by this street everyday. There was no chapel here yesterday. It must be created early this morning..."

Similar to geocaching games, some users specify chapels so that ordinary places have special meanings. Chapels as social places allow users to share their walking stories.

SCENARIO: WEEKLY SERVICE

“Time for weekly service. walk for an hour by following the rule you hear: please follow the red color you see."

“It is the end of weekly service."

Weekly service employs the practice of Dérive (Drifting), which means an unplanned journey through urban landscape. Participants make quick decision on routing with a given rule. The ultimate goal of Dérive is to have authentic walking experience which relies on environment rather than routines.

PURPOSEThe invitation is for a Japanese tea ceremony in Japan House at the University of Illinois. It demonstrates the zen statement “impermanence of all things“.

CONCEPT"Impermanence of all things" means that nothing is permanent. We should value every opportunity we have because it cannot last forever.

Another related statement "ichigo ichie" refers to "one life one time". It tells us to consider every opportunity as the only one in our lives. 一期一会

ichi go ichi e

Digital media seems to be the form against tradition. But it is the language of our era. Why not use our own language to refresh the understanding of the old concepts which still work nowadays?

The invitation runs only once. And it appears line by line and then disappears in the same way. Thus the guest needs to value the opportunity and pay attention on reading due to the awareness of its impermanence.

A way of studying in museum is asking questions about exhibits and looking for answers by observing and reading museum materials. The app encourages users to answer "questions" by providing the motivation, collecting figurines.

The app enhances museum experience by creating interaction between the virtual world and the real world.

Digital media should enhance people’s real-world experience rather than separating people from the reality and getting them addicted to the virtual world.

Willis Guthrie alters images in books using the collage technique. We design a 19 page secton to display his artwork in Ninth Letter Vol. 8 No. 2.

Ninth Letter is an award-winning literary arts journal produced by the English department and the Graphic Design department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

It is impossible to recreate the experience of touching the collage in photos. Thus we visualize the sense of touch.
