The reason “The great war” began was because of a man by the name of Gavrilo Princip, who was part of the terrorist group, The Black Hand.

Gavrilo Princip shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austriaand his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg on the Latin bridge over the river Miljaka in Sarajevo.

The Black Hand was a terrorist group that opposed the Austro-Hungarian government and didn't want their country to join the empire. There is also some kind of indication that the dislike for the archduke was personal for Gavril Princip.

With that said, the archduke and his wife were dealt with.

On July 28, 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on

Serbia.

This marked the first world war!

With every country, there will always be a big

brother. In this case, Russia came to Serbia’s aide

while Germany did the same for Austria-Hungary.

At the end of this war, millions would be dead,

billions would be spent, and more than 10 countries

would be involved.

In this war, the world took two sides. They were

called the Triple Entente and the Allied Powers.

The main countries in the Triple Entente were

Britain, Russia, and France. The U.S. joined near the

end, but was not an official member.

The main countries in the Allied Powers were

Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. (Although, Italy

flip-flopped throughout the war.)

By the end of the war, about 20 million people would die.

The amount of deaths in the Entente military made up

about 36% of all the deaths that occurred during the war.

The amount of civilian deaths that occurred for the

Entente were about 20%.

The military and civilian deaths for the Allied Powers

were both about 22%.

Aside from all the deaths, one must also remember all

those who were wounded and the countless that are still

missing.

The overall financial cost of the war was around

$185 billion.

Roughly, the Triple Entente spent $125 billion in the

war.

The Allied Powers spent around $60 billion in the

war.

The colonial people contributed to the war in many

different ways.

They provided valuable resources and people to

fight during the war.

For example, some colonies provided rubber while

other colonies provided large numbers of troops.

In conclusion, what was a act of “patriotism” led to

the first world war, which at the time was the biggest

war ever fought.

This war led to billions being spent and millions of

men dying and, soon, even more wars being fought.
