A Section Reviewby Ross Booth

It is always dangerous to make predictions about prospects of clubs and one is usually wise to wait until thehalf way mark . But it would seem after three rounds that both Old Paradians and Ormond are set for goodseasons. I think Old Xaverians are strong and Collegians will bounce back no doubt . University Blues havehad a couple of good wins early in the season and De La Salle can never be written off. Old Scotch, NorthOld Boys, Caulfield Grammarians and Bulleen-Templestowe have not shown very much to date . But, it isearly days.

Old Paradians thrashed Caulfield Grammarians by 92 points at Albert Park. Admittedly, Caulfield had sevensenior players missing but it was still an impressive performance from the OPs. Parades's Michael Skerre ttis an athletic forward, He should be, considering he was the Australian Junior Triple Jump Champion a fewyears back! By the way when you're out at the Garvey Oval be sure to pick up a copy of "Shags Rag" . It onlycosts a $1 but is was full of interesting material, some of which might be able to be used in psyching a teamup - at least there was in the issue I read !

Ormond overran North Old Boys in the final quarter to win by 56 points . No rt h trailed by only 4 points atthe last change but could manage only one more goal whilst Ormond piled on 8 majors, 4 of them comingfrom the boot of fu!l forward Paul Schuhkraft who finished with 7 for the day. He is tall and strong, in his early20s and seems to have found his niche after coming up through the Juniors and Reserves. Good to see MarkMcDonald back in form at CHF. Craig Clark and Brad Nach are doing well in defence for Ormond .

Old Scotch started poorly against Blues and this contributed to their 44 point loss . In the first qua rter Blueskicked 5 goals to Scotch's 1 . Blues got lots of drive from their on-ball players, rover Simon MacAulay, ruck-rover Mark Richards and ruckman Mike lfandell . Yandell is an important part of Blues game. The Blues seemto be firing under coach Alan Salter.

Collegians broke the ice with their 10 goal victory over Bulleen Templestowe . Relatively unknown DaveKerr had a grand day for the Lions on the wing . The Bullants seem to be a bit of a chopping block at themoment. I hope they can get their act together. One player who might help is ex Collingwood forward Darre nCollins who was reinstated just in time to play against Collegians .

At Elsternwick, Old Xaverians accounted for De La Salle by 18 points. Vaughan Carlin will have found thespace to his liking and he was one of Xav's best . De La Salle struggled to kick their goals - most of their betterplayers were in defence - Craig McHen ry, Mick Deveson, Adrian O'Keeffe and Peter Ber ry.

Peter FrenchPreviews today's matches

What a game awaits us today out at Bundoora when the competition leaders Old Paradians and Ormondclash with leadership of the Section at stake. O .Rs have done everything right and at home might J'ust start favourites .Ormond's Phil Kingston informed me during the week that apart from one or two of the U .19s who have graduatedto senior ranks there's not too many "Monds" who have played against O.Rs and certainly not out at Bundoora .

I'm going for Old Paradians because I'm of the opinion they cover Ormond in the key positions. Tony Canavanwill have the edge over the inexperienced yet in form Paul Schukraft whilst Dale McCann will be too strongfor Mark McDonald and will match him on the ground . Matt Considine or skipper Exton will cover Suther-land, although Ormond will hold sway across the centre . However l doubt if Ormond has defenders capableof keeping pace with Skerritt or outmarking David Way. Andrew Mehrten and Frank Gleeson will do wellfor their respective sides but the Parade man is more dangerous around the goals and whats more he'll beroving to a winning ruck where Grills and Spillane will be far more accomplished than Paul McDonald althoughif McArthur-Allen uses Phil Mehrten to accompany him, he'll certainly make sure Ormond gets its fair shareof first posessions. As O.P.s are a bit smarter around the flanks I'm confident they'll finish in front of what promisesto be the match of the year to date .

Old Xaverians front up for a second outing at headquarters and on last weeks form will be too good for Col-legians. The Lions will have benefited from last weeks win but I was impressed with the Old Xavs quartet ofBeattie, Callan, Carlin and Dalton last Saturday and they'll combine to give Xavs the edge when the ballis loose. Mark Somers will give them first use of the ball and with Steve Cu rtain and Nick Bourke such adangerous combination I can't see Collegians upsetting the red and blacks, unless they rediscover the team-work and play on game which made them the best side of 1986 .

In other matches, No rt h Old Boys at home will be desperate to open their account and although the Bluesare playing with confidence I'm selecting Nort h to upset them today. Old Scotch will relish a visit from Bulleen-Templestowe and a chance to notch its second victory whilst De La Salle will improve on last week and athome will be untroubled in beating a very ordinary Caulfield Grammarians.

In "B" Section Uni Blacks and Old Trinity meet at Parkville in a vital game for both clubs. Blacks werepretty ordinary last Saturday whilst Old Trinity had a revengeful win over Banyule . However at home Blackswill present a far different proposition and should win . Fawkner will be anxious to redeem itself after a poorshowing at Marcellin . They meet old rivals - an undefeated Parkside at home and will be keen to repeat their1986 semi final success. The Devils of course will be keyed up and coach Ross Oborne has the side teamingwell, and with Corries, Page, King, Pappas and Williams in top form I'm going for the visitors .

Other winners will be Marcellin over Banyule, St . Kilda at home to register its first win over St . Bernardsand Therry to maintain its unbeaten record against a battling Ivanhoe.

Great rivals Old Brighton and Old Haileybu ry clash at the Beach Oval with the home side favourites anddespite last weeks improved showing and win I can't see the Rovers toppling Kew at Victoria Park . The mosteven game will be played at Albert Park between Balaclava and Melbourne High who have put in good perfor-mances in going down to Kew and O.Ms in the last 2 weeks . Nevertheless Balaclava will be boosted by itswin last week and is good enough to go onto its second "C" Section victory . Finally Monash will return to thewinning list with a win over Ajax and the talk of the town "Old Melburnians" will give Thomastown its secondset back in as many weeks.

Review of Matches played April 25 .D Sectio nSt . Kevins won their second away match when they accounted for North Brunswick by eight points. A thrillingdraw was played by long standing opponents Old Camberwell & Old Ivanhoe whereas Preston had ten goalsto spare at Heathe rton. Bulleen United rose from the bottom of the ladder when they defeated Coburg byfifty eight points while in the other game Old Mentonians accounted for Elsternwick by forty points.E Sectio nMy knowledge of E Section form was shown by the fact I tipped the five winners last week . Brunswick & OldGeelong had big wins over Peninsula & Clayton respectively. Only inaccuracy prevented University HighSchool Old Boys defeating Powerhouse by more than their forty four point margin while State Bank's inac-curacy could well have cost them the points against St. Bedes . At Royal Park Old Essendon showed theirsuperiority over West Brunswick with a thirty four point victory.F SectionWilliamstown in the language of my match reporter made me eat my words as they comfortably accountedfor the dual winner Aquinas . In the battle of the banks the strength of the Commonwealth was shown by theirone hundred point victory over injury depleted A.N .Z. Old Ca rey opened their E Section account with victoryover LaTrobe University while the three other games were decided by wide margins when St . And rews over-whelmed Footscray, Doveton easily accounted for St . Leonards & Whitefriars defeated University Redsby fifty one points .G SectionBloods proved they are a force when they easily accounted for De La Salle while Old Scotch lost its first gamewhen St . Bernards had a forty seven point margin at the final siren . Kew moved into second place followingvictory over Monash White while Marcellin moved off the bottom by defeating GTV9 by eight points. Po rt Coltsaccounted for Old Haileybu ry by seven points while Collegians sent Old Melburnians to last place with theirthirty four point victory .H Sectio nState Bank's accuracy won them the game against No rth Old Boys who had five more scoring shots. Eltham& Old Brighton remain the only undefeated sides following their wins against Old Geelong & Old Xaveriansrespectively. The Xaverians must have been very disappointed with their lack lustre performance. One of theclosest results in Round 3 was the three point victory of St . Kilda over Richmond Central . In the other matches,St . Kevins had seven goals to spare against Therry & Bulleen Templestowe easily defeated PowerhouseBalaclava in the contest of the combines.Under 19 Section 1The round produced results of varying magnitude including the very rare forfeit of an Ormond side againstOld Xaverians ; the four point victory of Bulleen Templestowe over Collegians & Old Paradians Gre en turn-ing a three quarter time deficit against Marcellin, into a thirty seven point victory. The other two games wereeach decided by a wide margin when De La Salle overwhelmed North Old Boys and when University Bluesdefeated Melbourne High School Old Boys by seventy nine points.Under 19 Section 2This section too saw some big victories and some very inaccurate shooting for goal . Old Melburnians record-ed their first 1987 victory when they defeated an inaccurate Thomastown by fifty one points despite the factThomastown had only one less socring shot . St . Bernards defeated Old Scotch by fifty points while Therry'sinaccuracy saw them go down to St . Kilda by sixty four points despite having only two less scoring shots.Banyule's inaccuracy limited their victory margin over Old Brighton to six goals while Univ. Blacks easily ac-counted for Old Haileybu ry by fifty five points .Under 19 Section 3Whitefriars twelve goal victory over Caulfield Grammarians has made them the only undefeated side afterthree rounds. Ivanhoe continued to consolidate its place among the top sides by its ten goal victory over HamptonRovers . Monash Whites found its margin over Old Paradians Purple cut to ten goals by the determinationand competitiveness of the younq Paradians. Fawkner unable to muster a side forfeited to Williamstown .

4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1987

Section DLeaders Pre ston should be able to consolidate their standing today by defeating No rt h Brunswick . An in-teresting game should be played at Righetti Oval between St . Kevins & Old Camberwell . Providing St. Kevinsconcentrate on their task they should emerge with the four points . Old Ivanhoe, at home, should be able todefeat Elsternwick while at Coburg the home side should be able to record its first 1987 victory by defeatingHeathert on . Old Mentonians will be anxious to maintain its leading position by defeating Bulleen United .Form in the first three rounds does point to a Mentonian victory.Section EBrunswick seem to have found consistency this season and today I tip them to defeat Powerhouse who havenot yet adjusted to the tempo of the section . Two of the season's disappointing sides Peninsula & Claytonwill meet at Mt . Eliza where I predict Peninsula will win . Old Geelong await West Brunswick with the knowledgevictory will keep them up with the sectional leaders . Forwards win matches and Old Geelong's scoring hasbeen greater than that of the Magpies . In the same vein West Brunswick's defenders have allowed their oppo-sition to score-over seven more goals per game than have their Old Geelong counterparts. These facts plushome ground advantage lead me to select Old Geelong . At home I believe State Bank will prove too strongfor University High School Old Boys and at home Old Essendon should prove too talented for St . Bedes .Section F.Leading sides Doveton & Williamstown meet at Doveton . Although there appears little between the sides, the Doveton defenders have been the more restrictive. This factor coupled with home ground advantage leadsme to select Doveton . Aquinas should return to the winning list by taking the points against CommonwealthBank . University Reds journey to A.N.Z . Bank where they should be sufficiently talented to win the game .Old Carey travel to Footscray Institute, bouyant after their initial victory. I believe they will win again todayas Footscray's performances to date have not been of winning standard . An important game will be that atWhitefriars where St . And rews will be the visitors . St . And rews need victory to stay within reach of the topsides while a Whitefriars victory will help to consolidate the side as a section leader. At home I select Whitefri-ars. Two sides each with one victory meet at Bundoora when LaTrobe University play St . Leonards . On theirown large ground I believe the students will be victorious.Section G.The Port Colts - De La Salle match will result in the victors remaining among the leaders and the loser drop-ping to mid section . Port Colts have the more impressive record and I select them today. Leaders Bloods shouldprove too talented for St. Bernards and thus maintain their unblemished record . Old Scotch should be strongenough to defeat Old Melburnians and thus prevent the navy blues recording their first victory. Kew are prov-ing formidable footballers and today they should continue their winning way against GTV9 . Collegians shoulddefeat Marcellin while Monash Whites should prove victorious against Old Haileybu ry.Section H .At home Therry should just defeat State Bank after a closely contested game. Old Geelong should defeatNort h Old Boys who have yet to score points this season . At Eltham the locals will prove far too talented forPowerhouse/Balaclava . Richmond Central, at home, will not be strong enough to defeat Old Brighton whoare among the section leaders . Bulleen-Templestowe should record another victory, this time against St . Kil-da while I believe the Old Xaverians "Crocodiles" will bounce back to the winning list by defeating St . Kevins.Under 19 Section 1 .Old Paradians G reen are at home to De La Salle whose confidence will be sky high following last week'smassive victory. The Paradians are a stong side who I believe will emerge with the four points . No rt h Old Boyswill not be strong enough to compete with University Blues who should record a big victory. Bulleen Temple-stowe travel to Melbourne High School and may find the small ground restrictive . Nevertheless their superiortalent should carry the Combine to victory. Marcellin, despite last week's fade out, should be able to defeatOrmond whose confidence could be low after last Saturday's forfeit . Old Xaverians should be strong enoughto defeat Collegians and thus maintain their sectional leadership.Under 19 Section 2 .Therry despite last week's inaccuracy should return to the winning list today against Old Melburnians whileThomastown at home will find St. Bernards too strong . Old Scotch should return to the winning list by defeat-ing Old Haileybu ry at Yarra Park . Despite St . Kilda's great win last week I believe they will lower their coloursto Banyule today. Now that University Blacks have experienced victory they should be able to continue theirwinning way today against Old Brighton .Under 19 Section 3.Whitefriars travel to Fawkner where the locals will not be sufficiently talented to prevent Whitefriars takingthe points . Caulfield Grammarians & Monash Blues should play an interesting game at Albert Park . I believethe Caulfield side will move the ball too smartly for Monash and so I select the home side. Hampton Roversawait Williamstown in what will be an important game as the winner will stay in the leading bracket . Withoutany great confidence I select Hampton Rovers. Ivanhoe journey North to play Old Paradians Purple. TheParadians are playing with enthusiasm but Ivanhoe will prove too strong and talented and thus take the four points .

'OTF' noticed a familiar name in the Ormond players list last week - No. 61 R . Crompton . Yes it's Neil's sonwho at 16 is playing with the Reserves when free of school commitments . Good luck in your career Richard .

** *Newly appointed State Coaches Bernie Sheehy & And rew Langford-Jones are working closely in endeavour-

ing to select the best possible squads for the interstate matches next month . Bernie has Ray Walsh (Chairmanof Selectors) Brian Bourke (Football Manager) Bruce Bourke, Ross Booth, John Pollard, Kevin Fitzpatrick,Mark Walters & Brendan O'Brien out "spotting" each week whilst Andrew has Stuart Stockdale (Chairman)Peter Hannan (Football Manager) Peter Mason, Rod Kerley, Alan Quaife & Peter O'Donohue looking atthe lower sections . With Bernie and Andrew in close liaison all players have every chance of winning a covetedbig "V".

***The VAFA Marketing Committee has come up with a fabulous offer for Club Press Correspondents. They will

award a TRIP FOR TWO to the Gold Coast courtesy of Ansett Airlines for the "PC ." who best promotes his clubin the local (or daily) Press. The award will be based on weekly and monthly efforts including pictures, featurearticles and stories. PC.'s should send clippings of any exposure to the General Manager.

The winner will be announced at the September Members Meeting - so chase up your local paper andkeep them regularly supplied with Club Information . (Great idea Bob Welch & Ray Sneddon - Ed .)

***'OTF' notices a familiar name missing from the C Section Leading Goalkickers this season . Hampton Rovers '

Alf Panagiotidis, who has been up amongst the leaders for the last 5 or 6 years has been a noteable absenteethis season . Perhaps the Rovers fine win over AJAX last week will entice him back into the Green & Gold . I'llbet Ian Rice would be delighted to see him back at the spearhead !

***Further Reinstatements have been granted to Darren Collins ( BulleenTemp.) John Cavanough (St . Be-

des), Roland Goetz (Williamstown CYMS), Steven King (Old Xaverians) & Rohan Ha rt (Old Haileybury).

'OTF' reports that ANZAC DAY was duly observed by the VAFA last Saturday. Besides the waiving of admis-sion charges to Elsternwick Park the Association conducted a dignified yet simple ceremony prior to the OldXaverians V De La Salle match . All in attendance observed a minutes silence following the playing of the Last Post .

Congratulations VAFA it was a moving ceremony well done and well received .***

'OTF' noticed a few hiccups in the first week of published team lists . Ivanhoe's logo was that of neighbourand friendly rival - Old Ivanhoe whilst St . Personality Pars'THERRY BLITZ BLACKS '

Ther ry had a very convincing 57 point victory overUniv. Blacks last Saturday. After a very even first halfwhere Therry lead by just 10 points, the game wasone in the 3rd quarter when Therry booted 9 goaldsto Univ.'s 4. In this quarter, Therry lead by its CaptainGerrard Biddlestone in the centre, continually drovethe ball into attack giving countless opportunities tothe forwards, which placed the Univ . defence underenormous pressure. To their credit, Blacks made alate comeback in the quarter, but were constantly heldup by solid defence play from Therry's Paul Matton& Scot Ramsay ; and therefore Univ. were unable toreduce the margin by 3/4 time. The final quarter sawboth sides attacking in a quest for early goals withTherry being the more successful in this aim . By ad-ding a further 5 goals to Blacks 2, Therry has con-solidated its place in the four and undoubtedly willbe trying to improve on its position throughout theyear.

200 GAMES TO WEST BRUNSWICK ALLROUNDER

All at West Brunswick would like to congratulateStephen Fyffe on playing his 200th game againstOld Geelong today. "Ocker" has had a long and dis-tinguished career with the Club and when describedas an allrounder it embraces a number of facets ofhis contribution to West Brunswick . On the field Ockerhas played in every position except the ruck and isa fine example of the belief that a good player cando well in any position . He has fine disposal skills, natural pace and a heart as big as himself .Ocker has also been active on the committee since1977 when he took on the position of team managerand club delegate for our junior teams . In 1979 hewas treasruer, 1981-84 secretary, 1985-86 presidentand this year has taken on secretary again . He wasawarded Life Membership in 1985 and is a fine am-bassador for the club and for amateur football . Welldone Ock and lets hope we see you around the clubfor many more years to come.

In 1981 Robe rt Clements played his first game forlJni . High . Since that most promising debut Robbi ehas developed into a most respected player who al-,vays gives 100% . He has been runner-up in the B

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1987

& Fairest on three occasions and was also a mem-ber of the 1984 & 1985 Reserve Premierhip sides.Robert has been a hard working member on the com-mittee since 1985 .

Along the way Robert has had a few "H injuries"(Heart and Hamstrings) . The heart injuries are a directresult of Vic's training program where Robbie isrepeatedly matched against the better tacklers suchas Boyce, Zelko, etc . Robert also is having his trou-bles on the squash court where the only person hecan defeat is Vic Zanin .

Seriously, Robert is a fine example for all amateurfootballers . His training is the same as he plays -top pace.

Congratulations on your 100th game against Penin-sula and all at Uni High wish Robert and Karen allthe best for the future.

Personality Pars250 at NORTH BRUNSWICK

All at O.T. congratulate Andrew on reaching thi s

All at North Brunswick would like to congratulate Peter"General" Fox on playing his 250th game last weekagainst St . Kevins. Peter now President of the Clubwas Captain of the 1974 Premier side and was Best& Fairest in the 1981 Premiership year . Well done Peterand we hope to see you in many more games .

MAISELS REACHES 15 0Andrew Maisels fro m Old Trinity will play his 150thgame for the club today. Andrew joined the club dur-ing 1978 and has been a key element in our rise upthe grades . He has played most of his football as abackman in the senior side however versatility hasseen him play in almost every position . Of particularnote is his ability to make the most of chances withinthe reach of goals . Video replays reveal his delightin slamming one through with his heaps of huggingof team mates often continuing until the ball isbounced .

milestone and wish him all the best for his future atthe Club.

AFTER 11 YEARS - 150 GAME SAll at Elsternwick congratulate committeemanStephen Phillips on at last reaching 150 games withthe Club. Stephen, a man of many nicknames but bestknown as Simsy, started in 1976 and would haveplayed over 200 games by now i it hadn't been forinjuries, the odd suspension and thoughts of retire-ment .Always first to lend a hand when the club needsit, Simsy made a comeback in 1986 to play 8 gameswhen the Reserves were short of a few players . At thesame time he was Runner and Trainer and now in1987, with a new lease of life, he looks like playingthe whole year as a "specialist" half back flanker ndkicker-in from full back . He's captained the Reservesfor several years and in 1984 took the team to the Fi-nals. During the 11 years he's played in every posi-tion except the ruck but hi favourite is behind the bar.

Well done Simsy, you've been a great Clubman,Committeeman and mate to us all . Keep going the-way you are and its 200 games in 1990 !

100 AT AQUINASMark Wilkinson will reach his 100th game for theBloos against Williamstown CYMS . An inugural mem-ber in 1981, Mark was amongst the best players inour two senior Premierships to date.

Congratulations to Mark from the Committee, fel-low players and supporters at Aquinas OldCollegians .

100 TO BORGHESICongratulations to Edward (Ted, Borgers) Borghesifor reaching his 100 game milestone for Old Trinity.Ed first played for the club during 1981 and since thenhas been a!eading senior player known for his styl-ish high marking . Ed was deputy vice captain in 1985and 1986 . Ed has been an active member of the clubon and off the field with his performances at Metungshowing true leadership qualities . Old Trinity is proudto have Ed as a player, he is a model to Amateur Foot-ball . His training discipline is second to no one, moreplayers should follow his example. Good luck for thefuture at OT's Ed .

100 AT LAST TOA.N .Z .'s VICE PRESIDEN T

Rodney John May at last steps onto the field for the100th time today in the Zedders very important gameagainst Univ. Reds .Rod has been around the club for a long time nowand has made more comeback's than Lazarus to fi-nally get to this important milestone in his career .As a big man Rod has been very versatile and dur-ing his career has played in most key position, some-times it has even looks as if he has been roving, ashe always appeared to be in underneath all the pcks, maybe it's because he's getting old and his legs can'tcarry him any more.Rod has a great heart and never gives up trying, itis certainly no fault of his that the club has not beenmore successful over the past few years . Maybe wecan turn the tables and record a victory for him today .Off the field Rod is one of our mot popular clubmenwith his wit and sense of humour and his penchantfor the Sydney Swans and a nice cold beer. This year with the begruding approval of his lovelywife Kierna, Rod has taken over Vice-Presidency ofthe cub, a position he is filling with distinction .Congratulations Rodney from all associated with ANZwe hope today is a good one for you, and we hopeto hear your catch cry "Bundooa Express" now leav-ing many more times into the future .

THERRY NEWSCongratulations to the following players for beingnominated a their sides best players for round 3 .Seniors - G .Biddlestone, Reserves - P.Murphy,U19s - M . O'Kearney, Seniors (H) - D.
