ST. BERNARD'S BEAT ORMOND, GOAL AFTER SIRENRESERVOIR NOT TROUBLED BY UNI . BLACKS

Close finishes in ►nany other gamesBy GEORGE MeTAGGART

St. Bernard's won their way into next week's Grand Final when they beatOrmond in last Saturday's Second Semi-final with a goal kicked after the siren .

After the first quarter, University Blacks were no match for Reservoir Ol dBoys, who went right away to score by more than eight goals-and gainpromotion to A Section next season.

Old Camberwell, with a great second half, beat AMP Society easily, butFairfield, Marcellin, St. Bede's and the two Junior winners, Monash Universityand Beverley Hills, had only points to spare .

What a day! Three of the six senior games and both Junior games decidedby margins of less than a goal and another by seven points.

One game was won after the siren, two within seconds of the finish andanother may have been won on the siren but the kick fell short .

Strangely enough, none of the Reserves games produced an excitingfinish, the narrowest margin being Marcellin's 22-point win over St. Kevin's .

Ormond had first use of a strongbreeze but were unable to adaptthemselves to the wet conditions andmade little use of the wind .

With more than half the term gone,Ormond had kicked only 2 goals andwhen St . Bernard's cut loose to score3 quick goals, Ormond were introuble, and they finished the quartera point behind .

But they played much better foot-ball in the second term, holding St.Bernard's to 3 goals and kicking acouple themselves . They were only9 points down at half-time and stillvery much in the game .

Ormond forged ahead in the thirdquarter, adding 5-7 and holding St .Bernard's scoreless, to lead by 28points at three-quarter-time .

St. Bernard's kept plugging awayin the last term, and gradually re-duced their deficit until they gotwithin 4 points with about five min-utes to play.

Ormond rallied to score a goal andit looked all over, but St. Bernard'sgot another and then from a free kickawarded only a matter of secondsbefore the siren, goaled after it, towin by 3 points .

University Blacks led Reservoir by8 points at quarter-time, due mainlyto R.O.B's poor kicking (3-3 to 1-7),but after that the Blacks were neverreally in it .

Reservoir kicked 6-4 to a point inthe second quarter and were 31 pointsup at the interval, and despite 7 be-hinds straight in the third term, ranout easy winners by 49 points .

Fairfield and Parkside played aneven first quarter but Fairfield wentto a 2-goal lead at half-time andcleared out to lead by 6 goals at thefinal change - (8-9 to 2-9) .

Parkside, who had kicked only 6behinds since the first term, put in adetermined effort in the last quarter, kicking 4-5 and keeping Fairfield

scoreless, but Fairfield hung on towin by 7 points .

Marcellin edged away from StateSavings Bank in the second quarterto lead by 2 goals and were 14 pointsin front at three-quarter-time . Banknearly snatched a win in the last min-ute, but Marcellin scored by 4 points .

Old Camberwell trailed AMP Soc-iety by 15 noints at half-time, butthey added 7-7 to 1-1 in the thirdterm and kicked another 6 goals inthe last quarter to run out winnersby 47 points .

Poor shooting for goal certainlyrobbed Monash Whites of promotion, when they had 29 scoring shots(kicking 8-21) to St. Bede's 15, andwere beaten by a point .

St . Bede's kicked remarkably accur-ately in the conditions (11-4) butthey scored the winning goal onlyseconds before the siren.

Monash University trailed Univer-sity Blues for three quarters in theJunior Section 1 match, but therewas never much in it. Monash got tothe front in the last term and al-though the Blues had a chance on thesired, the kick fell short and Monashscored by 2 points .

In Section 2, Beverley Hills clearedout from Parkside with an 8-goalburst in the first term to lead by 29points, but then kicked only 7 be-hinds in the second quarter whentheir advantage was cut to 15 points .

They were still 2 goals in front atthe last change, but in a thrillingfinal quarter, during which the leadchanged several times in the last fewminutes, Beverley Hills goaled withinthree seconds of the siren to win by 4points .

They kicked 5-2 to Parkside's 6-4in the final term .

Ormond held St . Bernard's well inthe first quarter of the Reservesgame and a 6-goal burst in the secondterm paved the way for them to goon to an easy win .

Page 4

The re-play between Old Hailey-burians and Fairfield, who played adraw the previous week, turned outa real "fizzer", Old Haileybury win-ning easily (9-12 to 1-5) .

Fairfield, Marcellin, Old Camber-well, St . Bede's and Beverley HillsJuniors, who won the Finals in theirrespective sections, have gained pro-motion to a higher section next sea-son, along with those who qualifiedby winning their Second Semi-finalsthe week before .

Reservoir Old Boys' win in the BSection Semi-final last week alsogives them promotion .

The winners of the Kew-UniversityBlacks game today will accompanythem to the top grade in 1974 .

. . . given et away eh ?by Mike Dunham

"Given it away, eh? The question was asked by my companionof some years standing as he shrewdly eyed my sarsaparilla .

Feeling crook? "No, it's a personal decision ."

"Won't be seeing you in here eh?""Well, I'm here now aren.'t I? ""Yes, well you know what I mean, you won't be drinking that

stuff all night," he said .He was quite right of course, I learned later . I couldn't in-

clude myself in the long drinking sessions on Friday evening, and over the week-end and it wasn't the sars either. The Blokesstarted off the same way with convivial chat, but as the timepassed, I found the conversation growing louder and thelaughter more raucous and I just couldn't see the funny sideof their jokes which I realised had been repeated over and overagain. So, I began to slip away, and on the way home I evenbought a box of chocolates for my wife .

"You're home early," said my wife . My small daughterscreeched, "It's Daddy, it's Daddy," and two scruffy footballerscame in from the garden with smiles on their faces . As Isettled myself in an easy chair I was bombarded with state-ments and questions and stories of what "Sir" had said atschool, and would I fix this broken doll, and "the Tigers arebest, aren't they Dad?" I was wanted, it seemed . Yet this iswhat I said I couldn't face after a'herd-day's-work, I'd hadto relax with a few beers with the boys.

It happened quite slowly really and it wasn't till the fourthFriday night in a row that my wife said . "It's nice to haveyou home early these days, it makes the week-end so muchlonger," and the boys anticipating my early arrival had set upthe chessmen. It was then that I realised that I was lookingforward to it as much as they were .

I don't get involved in chook raffles anymore but I don't thinkI ever came out in front with them anyway . One week, I didwin three, but for the most part it would have been cheaper tobuy one at the delicatessen .

At the football, I don't drink and I don't miss the importantincidents .

Well, I'm $10 a week better oft . I've lost weight . I like Monday morning a lot more . I'mfacing up to difficulties, and I'm taking a real interest in things, especially at work . It's funny,I used to say that grog made no difference to me . I could take it or leave it, and all that rotabout it being manly to drink, why I've never felt better in my life . And I seem to find moretime to do things - maybe it's because I want to do them .

"Still off it then?' said my erstwhile drinking companion . "Still crook? ""Not on your life," I said, "never felt better . Must rush, I'm taking the boys to the foot-

ball ." ❑

CENTURY TO ALPHINGTON FULL-BACK100 games to another Gale . Wayne play s

full back for Alphington at-the moment andwill register the century in today's grandfinal . We recall brother Greg reaching thismark in a preliminary final a few years ago .Wayne has taken quite a while to achievethis as he was out for a couple of seasonswith broken bones, but he is now the majorobstacle to opposition goal kickers .Jim Jolley 50 last Saturday, Paul Quinn

and John (Crab) Gartner 50 each this weekare another three "Eagles" to pass thismark. All three are great players and con-tributors to the success we have had atMarcellin . It is a great pity that the threeall come up on one day as they each deservemore than a casual mention. However, thiswill be rectified when their centuries comeup .
