    One year from now, this month, we willbe celebrating our fortieth anniversary.To be clear, thats forty years from theadoption of our multi-level-marketingprogram in 1973. It was a year earlier,in 1972, that our original 10W-40passed American Petroleum Institutetesting at Southwest Research in SanAntonio, Texas and gave us claim toThe First in Synthetics.

    For those who dont know, when Ifrst brought my synthetic motor oil

    to market I attempted to sell it bytraditional methods. But my successwas limited. Synthetic motor oil wasunlike anything motorists had seenbefore. Although it was superior toconventional petroleum motor oil byall measures, it cost considerablymore to formulate and, therefore, wasconsiderably more expensive as itsat on the store shelves. Consumerswould see the price compared tothe inexpensive conventional oilsand, not understanding the benefts,would not purchase my oil. It wasfrustrating. If only, I thought, I couldhave ten minutes of a consumers timeI could convey the many benefts andundoubtedly secure a sale.

    This led me to the concept of directsales. A sales force of distributorswould bring the product to the people.Face to face, they could explain thevalue the oil provided. I then tookit a step further and, with the helpof Direct Jobber Shirley Green andothers, developed the multi-level-marketing sales plan we employ today.This form of direct sales provided

    AMSOIL Dealers the opportunityto register other Dealers, and allcould then build their businesses asaggressively as their determinationallowed. It is this milestone that wecelebrate in July 2013.

    We have come a long way. Theindustry itself has changeddramatically. Lubricants are now muchmore sophisticated than they wereforty years ago. While our original

    10W-40 was ahead of its time in1972, it does not compare to theoils we formulate today. Increasinglyadvancing engine and componentdesigns are demanding much morefrom lubrication. Higher temperatures,tighter tolerances, increasedhorsepower, and emissions and fueleconomy requirements present amuch greater challenge today forlubricant formulators. And many ofthe industry-imposed obstacles webattled in the beginning are rapidly

    disappearing as the push for syntheticoil and extended drain intervalscontinues to gain momentum.

    The look of the company, of course,has changed too. Where once asingle viscosity of motor oil wasmanufactured in one tiny brickbuilding, we now see hundreds ofviscosities of virtually every type oflubricant manufactured in one of themost advanced blending facilitiesin the world. We have continuedto reinvest in the expansion of thecompany as our sales have grownthough the years, and we now occupya staggering 400,000 square feet ofresearch, production and warehousespace.

    We have seen changes in ourmarkets also. In 1973 AMSOILsynthetic motor oil was purchasedprimarily by savvy auto owners whoappreciated the superior protectionthe oil provided or those whovalued the convenienceand cost savings ofextended oil drain

    intervals. While thosetypes of customersremain at the core ofour sales, our appealhas broadenedsignifcantly. Theextensive AMSOILproduct line nowreaches all markets.We offer lubricantsfor virtually every

    conceivable application. That, coupledwith our continuously increasingadvertising effort and the massiveimpact our Dealers have had in thefeld, has penetrated customer groupsthat were left untapped forty yearsago.

    Despite the considerable changes,however, much remains the same. TheAMSOIL Dealer business opportunityremains more viable than ever. Ican only imagine the extraordinary

    success that lays waiting for ourDealers. And, to be sure, AMSOILwill continue its unwavering drive todeliver the absolute best lubricants inthe world.

    Seeking ways to validate his revolutionary synthetic lubricants inthe early 1970s, AMSOIL President and CEO Al Amatuzio instinc-

    tively knew Americas race tracks and courses held an answer. Formany, nothing proves a lubricants effectiveness like its perfor-mance in high-powered racing applications, which require a levelof performance beyond the average car or truck.

    Such was the case with legendary racer Bobby Unser. He neededa gear lube capable of withstanding the punishment doled outby Colorados famous Pikes Peak Hill Climb, an event Unser wona record 13 times. His rear differential was failing prior to reach-ing the summit. Amatuzio supplied Unsers team with AMSOILSynthetic Gear Lube, and the differential performed awlesslythroughout several practice sessions, qualifying and race day. Thepartnership was a win-win, providing AMSOIL valuable data anda convincing demonstration of the lubricants performance. It alsoplaced Unser in the best position for victory.     Seeking Out the Most Extreme Situations

    The cumulative information AMSOIL has gathered through rac-ing has been instrumental in the development and validation ofnumerous products, including Severe Gear Synthetic Gear Lube.A rapid increase in engine power and towing capacities offered bymodern SUVs and trucks highlighted the need for a gear lube thatraised the bar for performance.     Racing allows us to identify the most extreme operating condi-tions and develop lubricants that meet or exceed those standards,said Len Groom, Technical Product Manager, Powersports. Theinformation we gather has direct bearing on the passenger car/light truck market as well, with vehicles becoming more sophisti-cated and generating increased power and heat.

    Prior to Severe Gear, off-road racers, rockcrawling competitorsand others were using a popular gear lube with less-than-idealperformance. The predominant product was capable of clingingto gears despite intense centrifugal forces, shock-loading condi-tions and the steep angles from driving over massive boulders andobstacles; however, its ability to stay in place came at a price. Thegear lube was the consistency of molasses, said AMSOIL Race

    Program Manager Jeremy Meyer. Extensive manipulation wasrequired to increase its temperature into an operable range. Beforea race, some teams actually raised their vehicles and ran them inplace to warm the gear lube.

    The synthetic chemistry of Severe Gear eliminates the need forpre-race warm-up by providing excellent uidity. SAE 250 andSAE 190 Severe Gear, used in rockcrawlers like the AMSOIL-sponsored machine driven by Brad Lovell, incorporate a uniquetackier that clings tenaciously to gears and bearings in severe-service vehicles.     ceptional protection, but are optimized for fuel efciency. Unlessyoure taking corners at 100 mph or landing massive jumps, youdont need the high viscosity ortackier, said Meyer.

    Every Racer has a Need

    The extreme shearing forcesinside Bob Teagues Mercury525 EFI V-8 racing engineshelped provide the demandingconditions required to develop

    Dominator Synthetic RacingOil. Bob Teagues marineengines operate at one speed:wide-open throttle, saidMeyer. If an oil maintains itsviscosity in that environment,we know it will perform equallyas well in other applications.

    The previous oil used by Teague was shearing out of its viscosityrange after only one race, compromising wear protection.AMSOIL redeveloped its 20W-50 racing oil into Dominator 15W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil (RD50). Dominator 10W-30 (RD30) and5W-20 (RD20) Synthetic Racing Oils were also added. Dominator

    incorporates durable, shear-stable base oils that maintain viscositydespite rigorous mechanical action. The oil has allowed Teagueto extend oil-change intervals to every three races while providingexcellent protection. The engines are sent to Mercury followingeach season to be refreshed, and the Mercury technicians couldntbelieve how good they looked inside, said Groom. There wasvirtually no wear to speak of.

    Equally as impressive is the performance of Dominator on thetrack. The oil coolers on the off-road trucks driven by Scott Doug-las, Chad Hord and other TORC off-road racers quickly becomecaked with mud during a race. Oil temperatures often skyrocket to300F and beyond, which can reduce oil pressure and compro-mise wear protection. Dominators ability to resist thermal break-

    down and continue providing maximum wear protection is provenduring every TORC race.

    Dispeing the Wet-Cutch Myth

    AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil is also thoroughly tested on thetrack, providing the opportunity to dispel the myth that syntheticsare too slippery for use in wet clutches. The AMSOIL/FactoryConnection/Honda team approached us with a need: they wantedfaster starts out of the gates, said Meyer. One way to achieve thatgoal is through improved clutch performance.     Laconia Motorcycle Week celebrated its89th anniversary June 9-17 in Laconia,N.H., providing an outstanding venue topromote AMSOIL products.     One of the sure signs of summer is theabundance of motorcycles operatingon the roads across North America.And if it seems like there are moremotorcycles than ever on the highwaysand byways, thats because there are.In 2012, nearly 9.5 million motorcycleswere registered in the U.S. alone.That gure has grown by more than47% since 2002, when the total wasslightly more than 5 million. Motorcycleculture and the thrill of the open roadbring thousands of new riders andenthusiasts into the hobby everyyear. Although many gear headslove working on their bikes, few wantto be doing repairs or experiencingdowntime from riding that could beprevented by basic maintenance.As with any vehicle powered by an

    internal combustion engine, properlubrication is essential to ensureperformance and longevity.

    In the past, it was common formotorcycles to run on engine oilsdesigned for four-stroke automobileengines. And if you spend any timeon online motorcycle forums, youllsee plenty of folks still advocating theuse of automotive oil for motorcycles.What is their rationale? Theyre lookingto save a couple bucks on a quartof oil, as the majority of oils blended

    specically for motorcycle applicationsare more expensive per quart thantheir automotive counterparts. But isusing auto oil in your motorcycle agood practice?

    There are several reasons whymotorcycle oils are better for your bikethan automotive oils.

    Motorcycles have fundamentallydifferent lubrication requirements than

    automobiles. This is due primarily todifferences in both engine design andvehicle applications. Motorcycles oftenoperate under more severe conditionsthan passenger cars. They usually runfaster, are air-cooled and share an oilsump between the engine, clutchesand gears. The oil, therefore, mustlubricate not only the engine, butthe transmission and, in the case ofwet-clutch motorcycles, the clutches,too. Many automotive oils, because offuel economy requirements, are nowformulated with friction modiers. Ina motorcycle with a wet clutch, theseadditives cause clutch slip and powerloss.

    Operating habits are different, too.While many of us rely on a car or

    truck for year-round day-to-daytransportation and for longer roadtrips, motorcycles are often riddenseasonally, on weekends or onshorter trips. These trips often occurduring warm summer weather, whenthe cooling system has to workeven harder. Thus, a motorcyclelubricant must protect against hightemperatures and high engine rpmwhile providing smooth wet-clutchoperation and protecting gears andchains from operational pressureextremes. Because of these factors,

    many motorcycle oils are engineeredwith high viscosity to help preventgear pitting, oil burn-off and oilconsumption.

    Retaining that viscosity is criticalto ensure components remainprotected. The high rpm and sharedoil sumps common to motorcyclescreate an environment that promotesshearing. In fact, transmission gear

    sets are the leading cause of shear-induced viscosity loss in motorcycleapplications. The oils shear-stabilityand viscosity retention are vital forprotecting motorcycles.

    Additionally, motorcycles are oftenstored for several months during winter a time when condensation cancause rust, which accelerates wearand can damage engine components.Rust is also a problem inherent tothe shorter drive times motorcyclesoften endure. If not combated, rustcan cause bearing corrosion whichresults in vibration, noise, increasedtemperatures and catastrophic failure.Effective motorcycle oils must includerust inhibitors to keep engines andcomponents free from corrosion.

    Motorcycle oils must also prevent foamfrom forming, which happens when airenters the lubricating oil during normalengine and transmission operation.Foam bubbles entering a lubricatedarea take the place of the lubricant lmand compress easily, leading to metal-to-metal contact. Foam also promotesincreased oxidation because moreof the oils surface area is exposedto oxygen. An oils tendency to foamshould be considered when selectingan oil for your motorcycle.

    For many riders, motorcyclesrepresent signicant investments ofthousands of dollars. It only makessense to protect those investmentswith products tailored to address theirspecic lubrication requirements.

    Whether hauling heavy tools and equipment to a job site or towinga boat for a relaxing weekend on the lake, many vehicles are sub-jected to extreme operating conditions and hot temperatures in thesummer months, placing an increased level of stress on drivetraincomponents.

    Modern turbo-diesel trucks and vehicles with V-10engines boast more horsepower and torquethan their predecessors, subjecting their dif-ferentials to increased levels of stress andheat. Modern gear oils are faced with thechallenge of providing adequate wearprotection during these severe-serviceoperating conditions, while also pro-viding maximum fuel efciency.

    The extreme pressures and tem-peratures generated by modernvehicles increase stress on gearlubricants and can lead to a seriouscondition known as thermal runaway.

    As temperatures in the differentialclimb upward, gear lubricants loseviscosity and load-carrying capacity.When extreme loads break the lubricantlm, metal-to-metal contact occurs, increas-ing friction and heat. This increased frictionand heat, in turn, results in further viscosity loss,which further increases friction and heat. As heatcontinues to spiral upward, viscosity continues to spiral downward.Thermal runaway is a vicious cycle that leads to irreparable equip-ment damage from extreme wear, and ultimately catastrophic gearand bearing failure.

    Many people overstress their vehicles in the summer, piling heavyequipment and luggage into trunks, back seats and roof racks.Some vehicles also pull trailers, campers or fth-wheels with boats,sometimes exceeding their rated towing limits. As vehicle stress in-creases, transmission and differential temperatures rise and cause

    many conventional lubricants to thin, resulting in inadequate

    lubrication that can lead to component failure.

    In addition, some vehicle manufacturers require thefactory-ll differential gear lube to be changed

    within the rst 3,000 miles, or the rst 500 milesif towing. Because differentials go through abreak-in period and are not equipped withlters like transmissions and engines, thegear lube must be changed in order todrain the break-in wear particles. Theseparticles, if left in the differential, meshbetween the gears and cause gear orbearing wear. Studies show most differen-tial wear occurs in the rst 5,000 miles.

    Preferred Customer Baxter (Dale) Rogersof Heyworth, Ill. saved himself the costof a new transmission by using AMSOILAutomatic Transmission Fluid.

    Rogers owns a 2004 Saturn Vue that satidle for several months last year. Whenhe began driving it again, he noticed auctuation in the rpm at lower speeds.

    He took the vehicle to a Chevy dealer-ship, where he was told he needed a newtransmission. The cost would have beenaround $2,800, Rogers said. I went fora second opinion at a transmission shop,and they told me the same thing exceptI also needed a torque converter, whichwould be an additional $500 to $800.

    A third opinion, from a friend who doesRogers automotive work, was that theuid needed changing. The Vue hasa Honda transmission. The mechanicchecked with a Honda representative,who recommended Honda transmissionuid or AMSOIL Automatic TransmissionFluid, Rogers said.

    I told my friend I would get the uidbecause I am an AMSOIL Preferred Cus-tomer. I bought the AMSOIL Multi-VehicleTransmission Fluid and he installed it,Rogers said. I have saved so much

    Back-to-Back in BajaBrce Menzies wins second straight Baja 500

    AMSOIL-sponsored off-road truck racer Bryce Menzies completed a very successful seasonin 2011. Not only did he win the Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL Pro 2wd classchampionship, he also won the SCORE International Trophy Truck title, due in large part to hisrst win at the Baja 500. In June, the reigning Dirt Sports Driver of the Year turned in a repeatperformance at the infamous race.

    Along with co-driver Pete Mortensen, Menzies pushed his Red Bull/AMSOIL/KMC Wheels TrophyTruck through 450 miles of rough Baja desert. The defending champions started 18th overall, butmade up just enough time to win by a mere 11 seconds. The win automatically places Menzies

    into the draw for the top 12 starting positions at the 2012 Baja 1000 on November 16.Menzies also won three of the rst four TORC races in 2012, and sat just one point behindAMSOIL Super Team driver Chad Hord heading into rounds ve and six at CrandonInternational Raceway.     Lovell Breaks ThroughAMSOIL Pro Light driver records frst career TORC win

    Success has been a combination of hard work and dedication forAMSOIL Super Team driver Brad Lovell. The Colorado native is oneof the most decorated off-road truck drivers in the sports history,claiming championships in both rock crawling and rock racing. Inshort-course TORC Series racing, however, it took a few trips to the

    podium before he was able to call himself a winning driver.After nishing fourth at Red Bud MX Park in Buchanan, Mich. onSaturday, Lovell used a second-row starting spot to his advantageon Sunday, pushing his AMSOIL Nissan to the front of the pack beforegrabbing a lead he wouldnt relinquish on his way to his rst career win.

    The track had huge holes, deep sand and brutal whoops, said Lovell.At the caution, I mentioned to my spotter that the transmission was actingup, but just as quickly I realized I didnt care. The guys at AMSOIL havesaid 300 is ne and I was prepared to win or go down in ames. I wasntabout to lift, and I had condence that I could carry it to the nish.

    Erik Buell, the father of the Americansuperbike, isnt just building high-perfor-

    mance motorcycles in his East Troy, Wis.facility; hes building a dominant racingteam. Last year at this time, the freshlyminted AMSOIL/EBR team was throwninto the re competing in the ultra-com-petitive AMA Pro SuperBike class. Admit-tedly, the teams inaugural season wasdevoted as much to ne-tuning its bikes,including the new EBR 1190RS unveiledlater in the season, as it was to winning.The 1190RS represents Buells entire en-gineering career: a blend of high-perfor-mance technology and stunning design.A bike as sophisticated as the 1190RS

    AmsoiL racg: What did you learnlast season that has led to the successyouve had this year?

    ek bull: We only ran the new EBR1190RS for the last three races of the2011 season, so we laid the foundationfor this year by simply experimenting with

    settings to suit the rider at each event. Wewere unable to test outside of the actualrace weekends. Over the winter, however,we ran several test sessions that helpedus for this year.

    AmsoiL racg: New driver DannyEslick has proven an excellent comple-ment to Geoff May. Why did you decideto add another driver this year?

    bull: Danny is a great rider, and hesa perfect complement to Geoff. Geoff

    wanted very much to have a second rideron the team, particularly one with a dif-

    ferent riding style. Along with their crews,Danny and Geoff constantly comparenotes and help each other. The supportfrom AMSOIL and Hero MotoCorp gaveus the ability to not only add Danny, butadd Dannys crew and enhance Geoffscrew with some additional talent that ourteam manager wanted.

    AmsoiL racg:What does successon the track mean for the company overall?

    bull:EBRs goals are to build world-class premium sport motorcycles fromAmerica and provide engineering

    consulting services in the vehicle world.Success on the track proves our capabili-ties in these areas. Sportbike customersand companies looking for engineeringhelp are knowledgeable about technol-ogy, and cant be convinced by advertis-ing. They want to see factual proof, andracing success delivers that.

    AmsoiL racg:How does your ex-perience running EBR rank among yourcareer achievements?

    bull:EBR is by far the most difcultand most rewarding experience of my

    career. Incredibly intense. I call it a two-year qualifying lap on the edge of ourcapabilities in every corner. We neededto build a world-class superbike in avery short period of time with a minimalbudget. Not only did this require a crazyamount of deep and thorough engi-neering of every component, but it alsorequired managing the business to an ex-acting edge of efciency. Stacked on topof that has been searching for investors,partners and suppliers, as well as meet-

    ing global government requirements andacres of legal documentation. When we

    won the Superbike of the Year award forthe 1190RS last fall, I think it was the rstmoment that we actually looked at eachother and said, I think were done withthat bike. Of course, then we dug in andstarted on the next.

    AmsoiL racg:How has the partner-ship with AMSOIL helped EBR?

    bull:AMSOIL has been a fantasticpartner, providing us with real technicalexpertise on our powertrain lubricants,cooling and brake uids. Although theproducts AMSOIL makes are already

    world-leading, AMSOIL is also an organi-zation that wants to improve its productsconstantly, and that works perfectly forus. American ingenuity and curiosity atits best.

    AmsoiL racg:What motivates youto continue building superbikes?

    bull:Well, of course I absolutely lovesportbikes, so I am personally a cus-tomer. But essentially at EBR we wantto push the envelope on what makes agreat sportbike, and superbikes like the1190RS are on the cutting edge of that

    search. I believe in the team at EBR andin the suppliers and partners we have. Myjob is to try to give them what they needso we can make sportbikes that simplydelight their riders. There are a numberof great motorcycle manufacturers outthere, but I am absolutely convinced thatthe pioneering nature of America, that isso strong in EBR, can bring some uniquethinking to the sport motorcycle world thatwill deliver wonderful motorcycles andalso move the whole industry ahead.
