'I'he present absurd position of the English Government , shows the absurd ity of a Coalition Cabinet, representing opposite views.

I was invited to the meeting in the Gresham Hotel, and in writing to say that I should not be in Dublin on that day, I wrote- " I hope that all misunderstandings amongst the members of the Gaelic League wil] now be forgotten, as EO many of our \Dembers have been imprisoned by the English Government. I hope that we shall be able to show that Governmerrt that they will not be able to destroy the Irish Nat ion nor the Irish language, which trey have tried so hard to do for tl:e last eight hundred years. The object of the Gaelic League was to restore t.h at language to be the language of tl, e whole Irish nation."

6 Dear Sir, I haye read with interest the dignified

O statement of the Cors'co 5116t.o. on their year's wo'rk, and I beg to enclose cheque for 1,

o as a protest against the endeavour to injure the Gaelic League by the outside committee appointed ostensibly to reform it. I regret

O that I cannot, owing to financial reasons, o send you a cheque for 100, as I did very

many years ago when you were first starting. o No doubt the management of the Gaelic

League was, when I was on the C01S1)e 5116-c?, not at all to my liking-far too much

6 fighting and disputing about small matters. I had a great admiration for Douglas Hyde's unselfish work, but he always struck me as being too good-natured to be a leader of men, as he did not, as chairman, stop iriterrninable disputes. In fact I oft on said th at the language movement was advancing in spite of the coisce 51oi:.o., and not owing to its efforts. The size of the coisoc 5noi:;,0, became far too large to be a practical business

The result last year undeceived me. I there saw men elc cted to tl-- e Coiste Ono th a for avowedly political reas ons who had done so little for t.r e League, or t l.c language, th at their names were actually unknown to the local organisers. In some cases they polled more votes tb an old members of the Coiste Gnotha, who had worked earnestly for tb e League for many years. Tl is result con- vinced me that a radical ch angewas necessary. To prevent misunderstanding I may say th at I do not in any way o bjcct to men or women of strong po litical views of any kind being elected, if tbey h ave done good work for t he language, but I say that they should be elected or excluded for Gaelic League rc as ons, and not for political. In your own words my prin icle is that "tbe Lca.gue is for people of all part ies," and tl" at "we mnst not close the League against any one wl-o is willing to work for the cause we h ave at beart." A man who now lies in this) grave told m.e last August that he quite agreed with 'me, and had stayed away from the last Ardfheis because he disapproved of the attempt which re 'knew was to be a.de to capture the League.

General principles for reform. are now to be before the Ardfbeis. It can accept, amend, or reject them. The members of the con- ference h ave made no t.h reats , ve iled or unvr iled , Threat12ning is b2,d policy. But we must retain our freedom of act ion if reform. ceerns hop.-lef s. As I do not want to try to influence the Ardfheis, I h ave declined to allow my name to go forward as a delegate or candidate for tbe Coiste Gnotb a.

Finally, I would remind your correspon- dents and leader-writers, tb at misrepresents- t ion, invective and ponde rous, but unkind jocosity, are not conducive to unity.

    SEAGHAN P. lVIAC ENRI. Gaillimh.

A chara, As "setting" of another kind has been

fa.c_;hionable lately, your leader-writer seems to have started an original line of h is own in "intrigu0r "-setting. I must say that if peace and unity are to come out of the present situa,' ion in the Gaelic League it will not be due to tactful handling on the part of the CLAIDHEAMH.

Your article says that " . . . their original purpose was to bring the Gaelic League into line with the Irish Pat'liamentary Party. Ostens ibly the purpose of the conference was to purge the Gaelic League of polities ; its real purpo8c, known at first by only two or three, was to make tl e Le 2.guc Blackrock, a party organisation." Th is statement is not 29. 7.'16. only mischievous, but absolutely untrue. I, for one, have fought for years to keep the Gaelic League free Irorn party politics, and I would as strongly resist 2,ny " bringing into line" with Lh e Par-liamerrtar-y Party as with OIREACHTAS, Monday and Tuesday, any other party. You may retort that I did August 7 and 8, in Dublin. not know the real purpoEe, but, I would remind you that. I am not quite a fool. 1.-Feiseanna whose dates only havs

    )' ."{ . ' f'} i Of course, the Gaelic League, or rno re

correctly, G-,aedc Leaguers, have not been wholly unaffected by the results of t.h e present world welter. Did any living being expect that they would be ? As well expect a man to be out in a down-pour of rain for a couple of hours and come in without a sign of wet. on him. The fact remains, and it will in due course be recorded in history, that the Gaelic League met the test that was to search. all men's souls with k manliness and cour age and with the recognition that it was its duty above and beyond all, to keep the banner of the Irish Language and Lrish ideals flying. Tne severity of the test has been well with- stood up to th is moment, and I have no doubt that at the end when other wrr cks surround us, the Gaelic League will remain calm and energet ic.

It i's t.h is general fixity of purpose on the parf of the League, wh ic': has retained, and still retains to a quite remarkable dr g -ee, the confidence of the 'Ir ish pc.ople, and as a consequenc0, and owing to -the loyalty and spirit of its members, the prospects f _ the Gaelic League, at the moment, are br ig.rter than they have been for many years.

From the many conversations I have had with Gaelic Leaguers .frorn various parts, they do not seem to be in a, mood to turn the League inside out at the moment, and I h ope that unless the propositions of our friends on the independent committee are brougit forward in a regular manner, they will not be considered, and if they are brougi t forward in a regular manner, I hope they will be subjected to a most search ing cri icism.

Walch what is the correct time and you are lucky to get it even approximately correct. The reason is because there are so many worthless wristlet watches on the market; watches made more to catch the eye than to tell the time. A really reliable wristlet watch is worth having. We do not sell so-called " cheap " watches.
