Attendance and Behaviour data is also included on the single page. As this is my last newsletter before some Long Service Leave for next term I would like to say how hard all our staff have worked this term, and how well our students your children have worked on their learning. Whether it is in the highly directed classes of specific instruction through to the highly self- directed, intrinsically motivated learning that often is required of Years 5 & 6 students, these young people have applied themselves to greater achievement and progress. Effective learning occurs when the relationship between student and teacher works together with the learning style of the child. Supporting that process is the communication and interaction between teacher and parent. In each case, each relationship is important to learning. This year, so far, has been challenging but also very rewarding. I’m sure as Term 4 rolls out, we’ll see further excitement in the Yuluma camp. Ms Barnes will be acting principal and Ms Rennie acting deputy. Thank you to both staff for taking on these responsibilities whilst I am away. My thanks also go to our School Board and our vibrant P&C for all their work this year. I wish everyone, even though it’s a bit pre-emptive, a restful and safe Christmas and New Year holiday break. School Board Vacancy (Parent) I would like to thank very sincerely, Mr Stuart Bower for his service on the Yuluma School Board over the last 3 years. Mr Bower has worked steadily in our meetings in data analysis, forming up and working with parental surveys, and engaging in the rich discussions about student health, welfare and achievement. We thank Mr Bower for his contribution over this time. The Yuluma Primary School Board works with the Principal and Staff to guide the school and set overall direction and tone. The Board has a strong role in seeking feedback and hearing the voice of parents both through the P&C and in direct contact with other parents. The Board meets twice a term usually on the Monday of Weeks 3 and 7 from 3:15 for about 90 minutes. This is an excellent opportunity for a parent member to nominate for the position Parent Member and join a dynamic team that seeks to build the school community and promote student achievement. I invite you to put your name forward as an email or complete the form to the front office by Week 1 Term 4, beginning Tuesday 11 th October. Farewell to Our Chaplain This term we say farewell to our school chaplain, Mrs Natasha Sobejko, who is taking maternity leave to have their baby. We wish Mrs Sobejko and her family well and look forward to meeting the new family member. Thank you Mrs Sobejko for all your work with students, staff and parents addressing and supporting the pastoral care needs of us all. Your work in the Breakfast Club, 3 Year Old Playgroup on Friday mornings, camps, excursions, assemblies and an array of sporting outings, has been thoroughly appreciated.

On behalf of the entire school community we wish Mr Pitts-Hill a very happy extended holiday as he takes some well earned long service leave in term 4. We all hope you enjoy some wonderful adventures with your family and return with lots of exciting stories to share with us on your return in term 1 2017! Enjoy your time away Mr Pitts-Hill. Sandra Barnes Deputy Principal

P&C News Thank you to all the parent volunteers this term (cupcake makers, canteen helpers and sports day volunteers), without all of us working together we wouldn't be able to achieve the great things we do. Bunnings Sausage Sizzle Please save this date, Saturday, 29

th October. This is our second sausage sizzle for the year. We will need

volunteers to cook and sell plus donations of soft drinks and mustard/sauce. A sign up form will be in the front office from the beginning of term four. Donations of drinks and sauce can be left in the uniform shop or front office. Crazy Camel fundraiser Your child will be bringing home the special paper for their artwork which can be made into a variety of products (diary, notebook, calendars, cards etc). These make great gifts, create your artwork over the school holidays and return by the due date to the front office. Art Room News This term the students in Year 4, 5 and 6 have been creating weavings on recycled CD’s. We were invited to submit our artwork to Disk Bank where it will be exhibited for two months. Carole Butler, a past parent, from our school contacted me to say that her company had CD’s that could be used to create wall art and displayed at the company’s office in Jolimont. A percentage of money from each project in October and November at Disk Bank will be donated to the school and the students will have their work returned to Yuluma so that we can also exhibit it here. Across the school we have been focusing on the art of Kandinsky and his paintings of concentric circles and the tree of life. The concentric circle oil pastel drawings were the first stage of the project and then secondly created our cd weavings. This month the artists of the month are Jack McNamara and Ella Manning and they have their completed weavings mounted on their oil pastel drawings and displayed in the office. We look forward to seeing the finished wall art with the combined efforts of three classes! Many thanks to all the students for their enthusiasm and have a great holiday! Miss Reilly Art Teacher

Japanese日本語News

Konnichi wa. Term 3 has been another busy term in the Japanese classroom and has provided more opportunity for students to see how language and culture are closely connected in authentic contexts. Finally the Japanese garden at Yuluma has been opened at recess and lunchtimes for the school community to enjoy. To sit, relax and be in the garden is encouraged as a place to rest. A huge thank you to Mrs Felton, Mrs Burrell and Whittle sensei and their families who have worked on the garden tirelessly since the end of term 2, to provide a peaceful place for all to enjoy. Some select students are part of the Japanese garden team from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 and are assisting to maintain the garden in tip top shape each day. Photos do not do the garden justice and so if you have time, please take the chance to view the garden which is situated next to the nature playground. The Year 3-6 classes have had the opportunity to engage with Japanese calligraphy and wrote the beautiful character ‘kokoro’ which means heart. A huge thank you to parent, Mrs Taki Newton who assisted and demonstrated for the calligraphy classes. Her good model and instruction enabled Yuluma winners from each year level to be chosen and submitted to the state competition. In Term 4 we will be notified of the state winners.

Editors Note: Congratulations to all students, staff and families involved in the very worthwhile project “…Let Peace Dwell Here”.

Year 3 News On the 22

nd August we made lava lamps. The ingredients were soluble

asprin, cooking oil, water, food colouring and a glass jar. First we put the water in, then the cooking oil which went to the top. The reason why the oil went to the top is because the water was more dense than the cooking oil. After that, we put the two drops of food colouring in the jar. It took a long time for the food colouring to go to the bottom. When it got to the bottom, the water went the colour of the food colouring. The soluble asprin was the last ingredient to be put in and it made the lava lamp bubble like crazy. That was a really good experiment. As the tablet dissolves it makes gas. Gas is light than water so it floats to the top. The air bubbles bring some coloured water to the top. Morgan, Year 3. Technology in our classrooms
