Anchor University: The Future is Now.

T he pioneer Vice Chan-

cellor of Anchor Univer-

sity, Professor Joseph

Olaseinde Afolayan is a repu-

table scholar and an interna-

tionally respected researcher.

He is a leading figure in rede-

fining the field of Civil Engi-

neering.

Professor Joseph O. Afolayan

has been involved in a count-

less number of high-powered

academic, national and inter-

national assignments that

have positively affected and

improved the practice of En-

gineering and education glob-

ally. In recognition of his myr-

iad of contributions to aca-

demics, he has received sev-

eral national and international

awards.

The highly respected scholar

of Civil Engineering, started

his hugely successful career

at the Ahmadu Bello Univer-

sity (ABU), Zaria and rose

through the ranks to become

a Professor in 2004.

At ABU, he was a Head of

Department, Assistant Dean,

Faculty of Engineering, and

the Chairman, Postgraduate

Studies Committee. Before

then, he had attended the

same University where he

bagged his First Degree in B.

Eng. in Civil Engineering

(1981) and had his M. Eng

and PhD in Structural Engi-

neering from ABU in 1984

and 1994 respectively.

Apart from ABU, Professor

Joseph O. Afolayan has also

attended a couple of other

foreign institutions where he

brushed his skills as an edu-

cator, researcher and an ad-

ministrator.

He joined the Civil Engineer-

ing Department, Federal Uni-

versity, Akure (FUTA) in 2005

as a lecturer. At FUTA, he

was a HOD and, the Dean,

School of Engineering and

Engineering Technology.

and corporate laureates till

date. He graduated from the

University in flying

colours and was

the best graduating

student in his set.

He was a former

Acting Registrar at

Caleb University, Imota, Lagos

where he succeeded in carrying

out deep-seated administrative

and secretarial restructuring.

He also helped in instilling

seamless administrative struc-

tures at the University. He was

also the Secretary to Council,

Senate & Congregation during

his days at Caleb University.

Beside University administra-

tion, Mr. Olulesi has also been

involved in a number of high-

level media engagements

where he helped create a rich

media nerve for his organisa-

tions. To ensure adequate

representation in the corpo-

rate world, he has also pro-

duced a number of University

and secondary schools’ publi-

cations that have been used

as the face of schools over

the years.

The Acting Registrar, Mr

Abimbola Adekunle Olulesi is

a veteran manager

and educational

administrator. He is

also a seasoned

public relations

expert with excep-

tional brilliance and fluidity.

He had his first degree in

Mass Communications from

the prestigious University of

Nigeria, Nsukka and had,

since then, bagged a rich

More recently, Professor Jo-

seph O. Afolayan became the

Acting Vice Chancellor of Win-

ners Chapel’s own University,

Landmark University, Omu-

Aran, Kwara State, Nigeria.

It is on record that Professor

Joseph O. Afolayan has un-

dertaken more high-profile

publications after he became

a professor than when he

wasn’t.

He has also undertaken aca-

demic exchanges as a scholar

across universities in Ger-

many. He is a member of the

Council for the Regulation of

Engineering in Nigeria

(COREN), Nigerian Society of

Engineers (NSE), New York

Academy of Sciences, the

American Society of Civil En-

gineers (ASCE) and the Struc-

tural Stability Research Coun-

cil (SSRC), USA, among sev-

eral other professional or-

ganisations.

As an educator and

stand out as a meticulous

administrator with a rich

depth of experience, and as a

goal-getter who is driven with

the foresight to transform

Mr. Olulesi is very passionate

Since its official take-off

earlier in the year, Anchor

University has made sev-

eral tremendous progress.

The management, headed

by the erudite Professor

of Civil Engineering and

astute University adminis-

trator, Professor Joseph

O. Afolayan, has com-

menced several activities

that will ensure AUL be-

comes a foremost Univer-

sity across the continent

of Africa and globally.

At the University’s man-

agement meeting, the

administration drew out

plans on how to ensure a

stress-free maiden aca-

demic session. They also

deliberated on different

issues touching virtually

every aspect of the Uni-

versity.

In his opening speech,

the Vice Chancellor noted

that Anchor University is

God’s vineyard where

everyone is required to

give their best without

holding back. Speaking

further, he pointed out

that, “Anchor University

will be distinct and differ-

ent,” stressing that the

institution “is designed

with a wholistic approach

that will ensure our

graduates are, indeed,

Learning”

He challenged the entire

principal officers present

at the inaugural meeting

to give their best in en-

suring the lofty vision of

Anchor University is

achieved in no time.

The Principal Officers also

deliberated on other issues

ranging from trainings,

enhancing students ex-

perience on campus, sus-

taining the quality of

learning, institutionalising

quality work experience

and promoting the image

of the University across

the world.

Students received drills on Communications

Skills

While students are waiting

to begin full academic ac-

tivities, the University au-

thority has already started

drilling them in communi-

cations skills.

Facilitated by a Senior As-

sistant Registrar, Mr Liadi

Dauda, the registry team

took the students through

the British Parliamentary

Debate Style with empha-

sis on modern presenta-

tion skills. Students at the

session were thrilled at the

session and are already

gearing up to participate in

the annual International

University debates.

Also at the training was

the Student Affairs Officer,

Mr. Ajose Oluwatobi E.

charge, Dr. Olufunke Eliza-

beth Yaya says the medi-

cal team is ready to pro-

vide constant and quality

health services to AUL’s

staff and students.

“We have started a routine

monitoring exercise of stu-

dents with specific ill-

nesses,” Dr Yaya noted as

she explained the unique

services poised to be deliv-

ered by her team. “Our

plan is to provide preven-

tive services by monitoring

the environment,

lifestyle and hy-

giene of the stu-

dents and nick

potential out-

breaks in the

bud,” she said.

The team visited

students in the

hostels and plans to pro-

vide regular lectures and

seminars to the school

community on how to live

a healthy life.

In recognition of manage-

ment’s support, Dr. Yaya

said she’s impressed with

the management’s interest

and support for the centre

and believes that every-

thing needed to function

optimally will be provided

by the University.
