BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

Poornaprajna College was the result of the initiative taken by

H. H. Sri Vibudhesha Theertha Swamiji of Sri Admar Mutt. It has been

maintained and governed by Udupi Sri Admar Mutt Education Council a

registered body. Presently H. H. Sri Vishwapriya Theertha Swamiji of Sri Admar

Mutt heads the Udupi Sri Admar Mutt Education Council as the President and

H.H. Sri Eeshapriya Theertha Swamiji as the Vice President.

Initially, the College provided courses in Arts and Commerce streams.

In 1963, Science subjects were introduced at the Pre-University level. Two

years later, Science stream was started at the degree level. Ten years later, in

1975, Management Studies were introduced at the degree level. In 2001, the

Pre-University courses were detached from the college and transferred to the

newly established Poornaprajna Unaided Pre-University College. In 2006

Poornaprajna Institute of Management (an MBA College) sprouted from

Poornaprajna College, as an offshoot of NAAC Assessment and Acreditation in

August 2004. We also offer P.G. Courses M.Com. and M.Sc. (Mathematics)

In its early days, the college had the privilege of having eminent

scholars and writers like late Prof. V. M. Inamdar, Dr. Shankar Mokashi Punekar,

Prof. Gopalakrishna Adiga and Dr. P. Narayana Rao as its Principals. After

these titans, the tradition was continued by able administrators such as

Prof. K. G. Tantry, Prof. Sripathi Upadhya, Prof. H. Shivarama Shetty,

Prof. Sudhakar Rao, Prof. M. Subrahmanya, Prof. N. B. Dixit, Dr. S.L. Karnik,

Prof. A.K. Halepet, Dr. N.A. Madhyastha, Prof. S. Subhaschandra,

Prof. Rajmohan, Sri K. Sadashiva Rao, Dr. B. Jagadeesh Shetty, Dr. A.P. Bhat

and Presently Dr. Raghavendra A. is heading the institution.

The year 2009-10, being the 50th year, was celebrated as the Golden

Jubilee Year. To commemorate the golden jubilee year celebration, an indoor

stadium complex was constructed and celebrating diamond jubilee this year

(2019-20).

NAAC Peer Team visited the college on 30th & 31st January 2017 for

reassesment and re-acreditation. College was re-accredited by NAAC with

Grade ‘A’ (3.19 CGPA) for a further period of 5 years from 22-02-2017.

Our College has been conferred the “Award of Excellence” by Udupi

Chamber of Commerce & Industry on 10-6-2012 for being the best college in

Udupi district in the category of “Advanced Education” for the year 2011.

With view to building an ideal academic atmosphere in the college premises, students are required to abide by the following regulations.

1. Students should abide by the college regulations set forth in the calendar as well as those formulated from time to time by the Principal. Cases of non-compliance shall be dealt with suitably.

2. They should not use cell phones in the college campus.

3. They should wear uniform on all the days when they visit the college for any work.

4. They should be punctual and regular in attending the classes.

5. If any student has to leave the premises during class hours, he/she shoud duly record his/her name, roll number, class and the time of exit in the register maintained by the security guard at the gate.

6. Further, every student should record his/her absence/leave in the calendar (in the pages provided for that purpose) and get it signed by the parent and the teacher concerned.

7. Indifference to studies, non-submission of practical records and assignments in time, avoidance of tests and examinations conducted by the college and discourtesy to establishment are strictly discouraged. These infringements might attract penal action if any student is persistent in such irregularities.

8. Coming to college in an intoxicated state, smoking within the college premises, using obscene and vulgar words against others, disrespect to teachers, indulging in malpractice during examinations and moral delinquency are serious offences and the penalty for these could be severe to the extent of expulsion from the college.

9. Wilful damage to college property shall attract heavy penalty and the offenders shall be required to repair / replace the property.

10. Bursting crackers within the college is a serious offence. Under no circumstances crackers are permitted inside the premises.

DISCIPLINE : NORMS AND REGULATIONS

11. No student shall play for any team other than the college ones without the written consent of the Principal.

12. No excursion unrelated to study requirements shall be conducted by the college.

13. Sitting on the window sill, loitering in the corridors and crowding at the doors are strictly prohibited. Violation of this directive shall attract penalty.

14. If any student is found with mobile, a spot penalty of Rs. 500 shall be levied, the cell will be confiscated and will be returned at the end of the Academic Year.

15. No student shall be an active member of any club, association, union or organisation unconnected with the college or of any sevadal, sena or sevaka sangha or any political party whatsoever, without the written consent of the Principal.

16. No student shall participate in any campaign, demonstration, agitation, hartal, satyagraha or strike directed against the college, the university or the government. In the case of Violation of this directive, serious penal action will be taken.

17. Students should maintain a high standard of decency and decorum both within and outside the campus.

RAGGING IS PUNISHABLE

As per the orders of the Honourable Supreme Court of India, if any case of ragging comes to the notice of the authorities, the concerned student shall be given an opportunity of being heard, and if found guilty, would be expelled from the institution.

No cases of ragging have been reported in the institution in the past years. However, as a preventive measure, a Ragging Prevention Cell with following members has been constituted.

REGULATIONS REGARDING ATTENDANCE

1. A student who is not present in the concerned lecture hall at the

begining of each period will be marked absent for the period.

2. If owing to illness or other unforeseen circumstances, a student is

unable to apply for leave in advance, he must obtain leave

retrospectively and this he must do on the day of his return to the

College. He shall produce a medical certificate issued by a

competent authority preferably as Asst. Surgeon of the Govt.

Hospital.

3. The Mangalore University insists that a student should attend

atleast 75% of the lectures and of the practicals in each subject.

4. The condonation is not permitted as per University rules.

5. Students attending special NCC or NSS camps or Co-curricular

activities during working days should inform the Principal in

advance to claim attendance later on this ground. Even here, a

claim can be made only if it is supported by the documentary

evidence. A student cannot claim attendance based on filmsy

reasons (picnic, function at home, excursion, voluntary work etc.)

6. If the attendance is below 75% in any one subject, he/she shall not

be permitted to appear for examination.

REGULATIONS REGARDING EXAMINATIONS / TESTS

1. The college will hold periodical examinations and tests to assess

the students, progress and also their application to studies. The

marks obtained in these and examinations will be considered for

internal assessment.

2. If a student absents himself for valid reasons for the internal

assessment test, a re-test may be conducted by a teacher provided

he is satisfied by the genuineness of the reason.

3. If a student who is selected for the award of any scholarship / loan

scholarship / freeship / fee concession stays away from the college

examination / test, he will be liable to the forfeiture of such an aid.

Laboratory regulations1. No student shall enter any of the College Laboratories without the

permission of the Lecturer who is in-charge.

2. The Students who have practicals to do should be at their places in the

laboratories at least five minutes before the commencement of the

practical sessions.

3. Before beginning the experiments they should carefully check up the

materials given to them.

4. They should handle the equipment and materials given to them for their

practical work with care. They shall pay for the damage suffered to the

equipment at their hands.

5. They should maintain silence in the laboratories during practical work. No

student leave the practical hall without the permission of the Teacher-in-

charge.

6. When their practical work is over for the day, they should again check up

the equipment and the materials given to them and hand them over to the

persons who are in-charge.

7. Students who have been provided with lockers in the laboratories shall be

responsible for the safe custody of the materials asigned to them.

8. All science students should provide themselves with the requisite

Observation Note Books and Record Books. They must maintain

regularly their records of practical work and submit them as required, to

the teachers concerned.

General rules

1. Students are free to play after working hours on all working days.

2. The Physical Director of the College nominates the captains of the various

teams.

3. When representative teams are formed, players for the teams will be

selected by the Physical Director from among the students who play

regularly and attend coaching classes and intramural competitions.

4. When competitions are organized by the College only those who carry out

the directions of the Physical Director and who are regular for practice,

will be allowed to compete. Players whose record is excellent in the

College will be permitted to participate in tournaments.

5. Students who receive games and sports materials should return them

safely to the person who has issued them.

6. Students who are on the rolls of this College are not permitted to

represents any outside team in any event against the College.

FACILITIESLABORATORIES

There are well-equipped and spacious laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Computer Science. Botany and Zoology labs have considerable specimen collection in their museums. There are full-fledged research laboratories attached to Physics, Botany and Zoology departments.

POORNAPRAJNA ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM Poornaprajna Archaeological Museum which houses rare collections

and antiques, has been established in February 2011. Sri Chandrakanth Bhat, H.O.D. of History is the co-ordinator.

AUDIO-VISUAL SECTIONThe college has an air-conditioned audio-visual hall (with 80 seats)

for projection of educational films, slides and audio input. There is a vast collection of educational cassettes and CDs. Students have full access to facilities available in this section. This section is headed by Si Suresh Babu, an expert in electronics.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENTThe college has a spacious playground named after Late Bailoor

Krishna Rao within the premises of the college walls where outdoor games like basketball, volley ball, shuttle badminton etc. are played. The ground also has tracks and pits for athletic events. The Physical Education Department is maintained by the Physical Education Director. The ‘H.H. Sri Vibudhesha Theertha Swamiji Poornaprajna Indoor Stadium’ which was built in 2009-10 to commemorate golden jubilee celebrations, houses a shuttle badminton court and a gymnasium.

N.C.C.The college has two N.C.C. units, namely, SD Army Wing,

commanded by Dr. Major Prakash Rao A. and SD Naval Wing, commanded by Lt. Shiva Kumar. These units provide opportunity for weapon training, adventure training, special campus, trekking, mountaineering, boat pulling, water sports such as sailing and wind surfing.

N.S.S.There are two N.S.S. Units in the college officered by Mr. Vishak G.

Shetty and Ms. Chaithra. The intake is 200 and it is open to both men and women students of the college. Programs organised by the unit include community service, adult literacy drive, environmental awareness, tree plantation and public health. The unit holds weekend camps in addition to annual special 7 days camp where students work on projects involving manual service. These camps also provide opportunities for developing their talents and thus contribute to their personality development.

STUDENT ASSOCIATIONSThe student community of Poornaprajna College has always been in

the forefront of cultural, literary and fine arts activities. The following student associations guided by staff advisors have

STUDENTS’ SOCIETIES

1. The College allows the constitution of following student societies:

Biological Science Association, Physical Science Asociation, Social

Science Association, Commerce & Management Association, Speakers’

Club, Games and Sports Club, Quiz Club, Languages Association, Fine

Arts Association and Ladies Forum.

2. Each Society will have a teacher nominated as adviser, and a student

nominated as Secretary by the Principal. The Games and Sports Club,

however, will have two secretaries one to mind the interests of the men

students and the other to those of the women.

3. The Editors of Vidyarthi Vedike will be nominated by the Principal.

4. The Students’ Council will consist of the Secretaries of the various

Students’ Societies and the representatives of different classes.

5. The Principal will preside over all the meetings of the Council.

6. The Principal or the Student welfare Officer will supervise the working of

the Council.

7. The Council shall neither be used by the students of the College for

making any demands with the College Management or the Principal or

the College Staff nor for organizing any protest, demonstration or

campaign directed against either the College Management, or the

Principal, or the Staff or the University or the Government.

8. Any representation which the students of the College wish to make to the

Principal, whether in regard to the provision of amenities and facilities in

the college, or the organization of the teaching programme or the ordering

of the examination programme or any other matter, it must be made

independently of the Council. It can be made by any student or group of

students.

9. When the council is sought to be used by its members for other purposes it

shall be deemed to be ipso facto dissolved.

Committee of the college.

LIBRARYThe College library is housed in a spacious, well-furnished two-

storied building with reading room facility. There are well over 56,384

volumes of most recent publications on various subjects. More than a hundred

news papers and magazines are made available to students. The book bank

lends volumes to deserving students and they can retain the same till the end of

their examinations. In addition to the main library, there are departmental

libraries accessible to students. Mrs. Geetha, M.L.I.S., heads this

establishment. The library has internet facility for students. The Library is fully

computerised with EASY LIB SOFTWARE.

Many reputed firms conduct campus Interviews for the final year degree students and offer placements in the fields of Software, B.P.O., Electronics, Electricals, Banks etc. Apart from this, there is provision for campus selection for higher education.

Career Guidance & Couselling Cell : The CGCC conducts certificate

courses on communicative English and computer related subjects;

and provides training for taking aptitude tests for competitive exams.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES

1. Fee concessions, freeships (other than endowment scholarships) and loan scholarships are granted in accordance with rules prescribed by the Director of Collegiate Education or the Director of Social Welfare or the D.P.I. as the case may be.

2. If after a student has been selected for the award of a freeship, scholarship or a loan scholarship, there is a deterioration in his conduct or his application to studies, (as indicated by his performance in tests and examination) or there is a decline in attendance at the College, he is liable to forfeit the said award.

i) The Shanker Vittal Motor Company Scholarship : To be awarded to a poor and deserving who is on the rolls of the College.

ii) The United Trading & Workshop Scholarship : To be awarded to a poor and deserving student who is on the rolls of the College.

iii) The Kalmadi Laxminarayana Rao and Nagaveni Amma Memorial Scholarship : To be awarded to a deserving poor student of the South Kanara Dravida Brahmin Community studying in this College.

iv) The Udupi Lions Club Prize : To be awarded to the student, who without a failure in any examination to his discredit, stands first among the candidates in the B.A. Examination.

v) Udupi Laxmi Bai Endowment Prize : To be awarded to the women student, who passed out from P.P.U. College, Udupi with the highest marks in the Humanities combination in the Pre-University course among the women students in the First year B.A. Course in the College.

vi) Late S. Krishna Bhat Endowment Prize (awarded by staff) : To be awarded to a student of III B.B.M. who scores the highest marks in the III and IV semester together.

vii) Late K. Srinivas Rao Endowment Prize : This is awarded to a student of II B.B.A. who obtains the highest total marks in the forst two semesters in the University Examination.

viii) Late H. Muralidhar Shenoy Endowment Prize in Sanskrit : Four prizes are awarded for obtaining the highest percentage of marks in Sanskrit.

ix) Pangal Nayak Bank Limited Trust Scholarship : To be awarded to a student who scores the highest aggregate marks in the Final B.Com. Examination.

x) Late Y. Sathish Kumar Endowment Prize : To be awarded to the student of the Final Year B.Com. who scores the highest aggregate marks in Accountancy in the University Examinations.

xi) Barkur Rangayya Upadhya memorial Fund Scholarship : To be awarded to a student of the II B.Sc. who has scored the maximum marks in Chemistry in I B.Sc.

xii) Bailur Vasudev Rao Endowment Prize : To be awarded to the student scoring the highest marks in the final year B.Sc. (BZC) examination.

xiii) Students’ Council 1982-83 Endowment Scholarship : To be awarded to Final B.Com. student.

xiv) Ajith Kumar Endowment Prize : To be awarded to a (a) Champion in the College Sports and (b) Student scoring the highest marks in Advanced Accounts in the Final B.Com. Class.

xviii) Kidiyoor Nagalaxmi Srinivas Trust : To be awarded to 8 students of I and II B.Sc. classes standing first in the four different Combinations.

xix) Late Sri Karkada Narasimha Adiga Endowment Fund : To be awarded equality to one boy student and one lady student of III year B.Com. class whose total marks of I year and II year B.Com. Degree examinations are the highest.

xx) Dr. B. B. Rajapurohit Kannada Prize : To be awarded to the Student who scores highest marks in optional Kannada in the Final B.A. Examination.

xxi) U.R.G. Nayak Endowment Prize : To be awarded to the student who stands First in Final B.A. Examination.

xxii) Vanitha U. R. Gundu Nayak Endowment Prize : To be awarded to the student who scores highest marks in Final B.B.A. Examination.

xxiii) Gautham Shetty & Ashwin Shetty memorial Endowment Scholarship : To be awarded to two students who score highest marks in English Optional in III B.A. Examination.

xxv) Late Sri K. Ananth Shenoy Memorial Endowment Scholarship : To be given to a student of I year B.Com. class who had scored highest marks in the previous examination (II PUC Commerce of P.P.U. College, Udupi and who is economically backward.)

xxvi) Late Sri Upendra Shrinivasa Nayak memorial Endowment Scholarship : To be given to a deserving final year degree student.

xxvii) Scholarship by Sri Manohar Rao : To be awarded to two deserving candidates.

xxviii) Subhashchandra memorial Endowment Prize sponsored by Sadana Trust : Awarded to two optional English students.

xxix) Smt. Gangamma & C.H. Venkateshwara Bhat Endowment Scholarship : Awarded to two students of B.Sc. (BZC).

xxx) Bhavani Bai Trust Endowment Prize : To be awarded to a poor deserving Brahmin Student.

xxxi) D.G. Hegde Memorial Scholarship : To be awarded to four final year B.A., B.Sc., B.Com and B.B.A. Students with highest aggregate marks in Sanskrit.

xxxii) Final year BA (2007-08) Endowment Scholarship : To be awarded to a desrving student of final year B.A.

xxxiii) Late Sri Gopalkrishna Adiga Endowment Prize : To be awarded to two students based on ‘Adigara Kavanagala Gayana Spardhe’.

xxxiv) Neelavara Nayak Family Scholarship : To be awarded to two students of II B.Sc. and III B.Sc. with highest marks in Computer Science.

xxxv) Golden Jubilee year Scholarships sponsored by Department of Commerce and Management : To be awarded to twelve B.Com. and BBM Students.

xxxvi) Sri U.S. Nayak memorial Endowment Scholarship : To be awarded to a desrving student of second year degree class.

XXXVii) B. Vasantha Shetty Memorial Scholarship : To be awarded to a student scoring highest marks in ‘History of Tulunadu’.

XXXViii) Madhwacharya Sanskrit Prize Awarded by Aprameya Paduthonse : One for I year B.Sc. Student (studying in II year in the College), other to the II year B.Sc. Student (studying in III year in the College), who score the highest marks in Sanskrit in the corresponding University Examination

3. Financial Assistance to needy students : PPC - PTA Students’ Welfare Fund provides financial assistance to the needy students, based on the financial position and academic performance of the students.

4. Proficiency Prizes :

These are awarded on the College Day each year. The selection is made on the basis of the marks obtained in the University examinations. There are two categories or proficiency prizes namely :

(i) General Proficiency Prizes awarded to students securing the highest total marks considering all the subjects together.

(ii) Subject Proficiency prizes : awarded to students scoring the highest marks in particular subjects. Both these prizes are awarded to the students who pass all other subjects and obtain more than 60% marks.

H.H. Sri Vibudhesha Theertha Swamiji, Founder President of

Sri Admar Mutt Education Council had installed two sets of Prizes as
