Why “It’s not official until it’s on Facebook”Many of today’s “Facebook generation” will already be very familiar with the above saying, whereby

more and more of these young people (18-24 year-olds) refuse to believe something they’re actually told face-to-face until they have it confirmed as ‘fact’ on Facebook. For instance, a young man may tell his friends he’s dating a certain girl, she may even confirm this to her girlfriends. Yet, it will only become ‘set in stone’ if and when it appears on their Facebook sites.

What an incredible situation.

Also, it’s not unusual for a Facebook user to have a couple of thousand photos, dozens of videos and hundreds of friends. Next time you have a real drama though, try this simple exercise, Facebook these friends and see how many actually turn up for you in your hour of need.

The virtual has become, to many people, more trustworthy than the real. I’m sure I’m not the only person to find this recent development more than a little disturbing.

Yet, there are many good things to say about Facebook, and social networking in general:

‘Positive Impact of Facebook:

Social networking can enrich social lives for those separated from family and friends by long distances, bringing them together despite the physical separation. This has recently come to light in the number of people in the Armed Forces using YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to stay in touch.

Online communication can help those with dysfunctional syndromes achieve a level of social interaction previously difficult or impossible. For some people, interaction with crowds is made easier if they do not actually feel the physical immersion.

Such sites also provide those isolated by disability or environment with a rich and fulfilling social life. For anyone who is unable to leave their own house, social networking has provided a great way to get in touch with people who have similar issues, as well as allowing them to stay in touch with existing networks of friends.

Finally, social networking sites can bring people together with varying backgrounds who might otherwise never have met, and then encourage them to extend that experience into real world social functions.

Negative Impact of FaceBook:

Electronic interaction displaces the social interaction, keeping people apart – it is so convenient that people lack the drive to actually interact face to face. People are social animals, in the main, and removing that pillar

can actually affect their social development, especially if started at a young age. It also changes the way people interact, possibly producing changes that will eventually affect the evolution of social interaction. The lack of face-to-face communication undermines skills such as reading body language and other indirect communication facilities.

Mass electronic communication may lead to a lower quality of social interaction due to the sheer number of participants; the background level of gossip is likely to be higher than in face-to-face interactions. There’s also the inference that online information has less value somehow than real world information, although the same could be said of water cooler office gossip.’

The ‘London Pride’ Andover Darts Classic:Andover Invitation Darts are delighted to announce that Fuller Smith and Turner’s “London Pride” will be the title sponsor for this year’s Classic.

The high-profile sponsor is synonymous with the event and venue and underlines the ambition to firmly establish Andover as a quality darting scene.

This year is the 8th consecutive, the first and most recent has been won by Andy Jenkins with Mark Walsh, James Wade, Dennis Smith, Paul Cook and Paul Hogan sandwiched in between.

This year’s move to a new home, the attractive and spacious Wolversdene Club has

coincided with a healthy increase in prize money and this year’s winner will collect a cool £2000 for his efforts. The runner up will earn £1000 and generous sponsorship permits paying down to the last 16 who will pick £100.

The Wolversdene Club are making it a real family day with youngsters able to mingle with the pro’s and enjoy other attractions such as barbeque, bouncy castle and the ‘London Pride’ beer tent. The vast majority of the players will have qualified through ranking points at monthly open events with local players having the additional opportunity to gain points through the winter and summer leagues in the tons, maximums and legs won tables.

There is however a last chance to earn one of 12 remaining places in this year’s classic; Sunday July 3rd at the Wolversdene Club is an open qualifier; for more information contact Glen Dawkins on 01264-358394, e-mail [email protected] or visit andoverdarts.co.uk

6th Andover Youth Classic & Jamie ‘G’ Memorial Trophy:The second of Andover’s blue riband events takes place on Sunday 17th July, also at the Wolversdene Club who are sponsoring the competition to the tune of £600 and Unicorn Darts.

With over 70 entrants already received the Andover Academy faces its stiffest challenge yet to retain all titles since the competition’s inception.

The Youth Open featuring the Jamie ‘G’ trophy in memory of young Jamie Gentleman, who tragically died 2 years ago, is open

to all aspiring dart players under the age of 21 as at 1st January this year. Harriet Raynsford and World Youth champion Arron Monk will be looking to defend their respective titles from last year but will be facing strong challenges from 7 counties.

There are separate girls and boys competitions plus the same in the Junior section. For more information contact Mark Thorne on 07795-515403, [email protected] or visit www.andoverdarts.co.uk

A Trip to the SeasideIt’s a lovely sunny day, and we’re all going to the sea,

Mum and Dad, our three small kids, my husband Jack, and me, Our little car is groaning, as it sets off down the road,

Buckets, spades and swimsuits all weigh down our heavy load, My husband slams the brakes on, our car stops with shuddering jolt,

The traffic is horrendous, and it’s all coming to a halt, I fiddle with the radio while Jack just sits and glowers,

The traffic update tells us we’ll be stuck for several hours, Hi face gets really sulky; now it’s turned a crimson hue,

As a cry comes from our eldest child “Mum, Hannah wants a poo,” I turn around to Hannah, I say “Darling wait right there,”

Too late, a nasty niff takes hold, begins to fill the air, Hannah screams so loudly that we both begin to groan

We’re stuck here on the motorway; just two miles from our home, Mum says “Turn the blower off, it’s messing up my hair,”

And from the back there comes a chorus, “Daddy, are we nearly there?”

Local communities are set to benefit after the approval of a plan to minimise the impact of construction traffic was given the go-ahead. An independent planning inspector has backed the new Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Minerals and Waste Plan after scrutinising the 174 page document following several rounds of public consultation and a series of public hearings.

The plan deals with many issues, such as the provision of new recycling centres and the supply of building materials for new developments, but during the process local communities highlighted the threat of heavy lorries carrying construction and demolition materials through their villages as a key concern.

After listening to their feedback, Cambridgeshire County Council and local haulage and waste companies have worked closely to agree a package of measures aimed at keeping the bulk of construction traffic out of local villages. This includes commitments given by the companies to local communities, specific traffic routing plans to landfill sites and the joint funding of new road signage for the preferred routes.

Councillor Roy Pegram, Cambridgeshire County Council’s Lead Member for Planning, said: “This has been a very long process but it is great news that the Planning Inspector has given the go-ahead to the plan. Importantly, he has confirmed our view that the right way to plan for growth in the county is to work closely with the minerals and waste industry and local communities and their elected representatives to make the right choices for the future while not creating problems in the present. I would like to particularly applaud the actions taken by local companies in helping to address the important issue of

heavy lorries driving through local villages. It shows their commitment to helping the communities they are living and working in.”

Mick George Ltd, Network Rail, Frimstone Ltd and AmeyCespa Ltd have already re-routed a significant proportion of their through traffic avoiding local villages including Sutton, Earith, Haddenham and Wilburton with the exception of servicing local building projects. The new plan provides a clear commitment for more agreements to be a feature of future negotiations with other operators.

Councillor Phillip Read, Chairman of the County’s Development Control Committee, said: “In the past it has been hard to stop lorries from using particular routes so the new agreements and signage will make a real difference. The haulage companies are very keen to promote the new routes themselves as they realise, as we all do, the need to reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles going through villages.”

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Minerals and Waste Plan proposes the location of future waste management facilities and quarries for building materials such as sand and gravel, up to 2026. It has a number of key principles including making building materials available for the construction of new housing and infrastructure, and encouraging recycling through conveniently located, modern, enclosed recycling centres.

It is anticipated that the full plan will be adopted by elected members at Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council by early 2012.

A generous slice of country life served with lashings of fun things to do is the recipe for success at this year’s Romsey Show.

The main ingredients for a great day out for all the family are action-packed show rings, lots of interesting rural pursuits and hundreds of horses, cattle and sheep that are looking their best for the judges.

Some of the finishing touches include a new alpaca show, a revamped food area and a singing nun performing on a mobile piano!

Things have certainly changed from the early 1800s when Romsey Show started life as a Fatstock Show, held in the town’s Market Place and adjoining streets just before Christmas.

The Romsey Agricultural Society was founded in 1842 for “the encouragement of the breeding of horses and livestock, good husbandry and skilled labour”. The society merged with the Romsey Horse Show Society in 1919, when the newly-formed Romsey Agricultural and Horse Show Society held its first event at Broadlands.

The show has been held on the estate ever since and has grown to become one of the top one-day agricultural shows in the country, regularly attracting over 25,000 visitors, yet holding fast to its founding principle as a showcase for the best of British farming.

On display are a huge variety of horses, donkeys, cattle and sheep. All are competing for the championship title and a place in the Grand Parade of prize-winners. Joining the line-up this year are alpacas, which are appearing at Romsey for the first time as part of the British Alpaca Society Short Fleece Show.

There’s also a new champion of champions cattle event featuring the best of the best from agricultural shows throughout the summer and more non-affiliated horse classes designed to attract local competitors.

Attractions in the Main Ring include the Blazing Saddles all-girl barrel racing team, the Solent Eagles junior motorcycle display team and the Derbyshire Midshipmen Carnival Band.

Traditional countryside activities are highlighted with displays of falconry, gun dog training and the ever popular parade of hounds, while some of the more unusual animals on the showground include otters and water buffalo.

There will also be a new food show, called the Food Zone, featuring lots of fresh ideas and activities for children. Some of Hampshire’s top chefs will be appearing in the Aga Rangemaster Cookery Demonstration Theatre while the Traditional Bakers Show will explain how to make the perfect loaf.

In the children’s tent, Min Raisman and her Fit2Cook team will be encouraging youngsters to create healthy snacks. Min is passionate about food education and, having produced BBC

Radio 4’s award-winning Food Programme and organised the Food and Farming Awards, is keen to show young people the benefits of a good diet based on seasonal fruit and vegetables.

And with over 80 traders displaying their wares in the Food Zone, there will be a huge array of produce to sample and purchase: the selection includes game, jams and chutneys, award-winning cheeses, pies, pastries and

cakes, cider, beer and wine, fruit and vegetables.

Romsey Art Group is among the many local societies exhibiting their work around the showground. They are aiming to be more family-friendly this year with members demonstrating

their work alongside an all-day colouring activity in which children can create pictures for display outside the marquee.

In addition, group members Alan Langford and Alan Olden will be painting a colour panorama on a family theme to a musical accompaniment. They plan to start at opposite ends and meet in the middle.

Also aiming to hit the right note with families is Musical Ruth with her magical mobile piano. Having

performed at countless venues to high acclaim, the singing nun will be making her debut at Romsey with her unique mix and mingle act. Just think Nuns on the Run and you’ll understand the humour!

This year’s Romsey Show promises to be another great day out for all the family. It all happens on Saturday, September 10th and there’s information on how to buy tickets at www.romseyshow.co.uk, with savings of up to 30% on some advance sales.

What is acupuncture?

Acpuncture is an effective and safe method of natural therapy. It is used to improve the body’s well-being and to prevent medical conditions. Thin needles are inserted into the body to stimulate the process of natural healing. Acupuncture not only helps control pain but can treat various internal disorders. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) explains that there are twelve meridians or energy channels which run along the body and link with a specific organ. Medical disorders occur when the energy flow (qi) is interrupted.

How does it work?

The insertion of acupuncture needles into specific points stimulates the flow of qi along the meridians and so harmonizes the body. Research shows that the central nervous system is stimulated by acupuncture by releasing chemicals in the brain such as endorphins, which helps relieves pain.

Does it hurt?

A sensation from the needle in the form of tingling, dumbness, warmth, coldness or heaviness can be experienced. An acupuncture needle does not have a cavity such as a syringe needle would as it does not

draw body fluid out or inject any substance into the body. A slight pricking sensation may be felt and not a stinging sensation that is often experienced from a syringe needle as it is inserted into the body.

How many sessions are needed and how often?

Occasionally a difference can be experienced immediately but mostly a course of treatments would be advisable with an interval of a week from the initial treatment.

What can it be used to treat?

Headaches, migraines, back pain, sciatica, sport injuries, insomnia, infertility, anxiety, psoriasis, eczema, hay fever, tennis and golfers elbow, carpal tunnel, frozen shoulder, irritable bowel, chronic fatigue, sinus, pregnancy, smoking addictions, weight control and even the tightening of the facial muscles and much more.
