Animal Rights Debate 25.11.2010
y Introduce the topic:
Today, we are here to participate in a debate about animal welfare. Animal welfare generally
refers to the state of the animal. Protecting an animal's welfare means providing for its
physical and mental needs and fighting for more humane treatment of the animal. Mostquestions about animal welfare arise around farm animals, laboratory animals and animals for
entertainment. And one of these common questions is whether animals are humans
properties or members of moral commodity and whether non-human animals should have any
rights.
y Animal Rights Groups:
- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): an American animal rightsorganization established in 1981. Its slogan is "Animals are not ours to eat, wear,
experiment on, or use for entertainment.
Yesterday, I have watched one short video report released by this organization about realcruelty towards animals, whats more, it was about Beagle dogs, which is a very gentle
and loyal breed. The dogs were beaten and shaken and given some kind of substance
which caused negative effects or death. The video was recorded by Huntingdon Life
Sciences. This association was rewarded an Achievement of Accreditation in 2003 for
ensuring strict criteria and reliability of animal tests.
- American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA): established in 1866.The organization's mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to
animals throughout the United States."
Positive outcomes:
1. Orange Initiative: An invitation of key cities across the United States to join ASPCA in ending
the unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable pets.2. Creating plans for animals in times of emergency
3. 740m2
state-of-the-art adoption facility in New York City
4. A research-based matching system to match animals with the best homes.
5. Helping at-risk horses with the ASPCA Equine Fund
y Animal welfare controversial issues:
- Animal abuseHarm to non-human animals for purposes other than self-defense: result of anger, inhumane
personality, wish to dump the pet, revenge, etc..
Dog fighting (most serious form of animal abuse, violence during the fights and suffering after
the fights).
- Circus performances (Elephants are abused while training)Elephants are often beaten, shocked, and whipped in order for them to repeatedly perform
the routines of circus performance. The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) does not prohibit the use
of bull hooks, whips, electrical shock prods, or other such training devices. The elephants are
beaten by several people for up to fifteen minutes at a time with the sharp bull hooks. Their
skin being as sensitive as humans', one can understand the torture this entails.
- Animal testing

One estimate of mice and rats used in the United States alone in 2001 was 80 million. Most
animals are euthanized after being used in an experiment.
- Animals killed for economic purpose: rabbit fur, snake leather, crocodile skin, etc..- Animal Slaughters:
Dolphin slaughters in Japan (heads)
Shark slaughters in India (shark fins)
Terrible animal slaughters in China and America (most horrible ever!)
