N.S.S.
NSS promotes social responsibilities and citizenship roles. The NSS unit of kirti college exposes students to various social issues like environmental pollution, atrocities on women, water conservation, disaster preparedness and disaster management, consumer rights, HIV/AIDS, issues. of challenged children, etc. Students attended lectures, seminars workshops on many of these issues through out the year at various venues including Kirti College and performed meritoriously and with conviction in all programs that they participated often in large numbers. Their empathy towards social problems and issues reflected in the awards gained at various competitions held during the year.
Some of the major activities that were performed during this year are mentioned below.
Anemia Testing:
This year we had a special project in which the Dean of Sushrusha Hospital Dr. Rekha Bhatkhande approached Kirti College with the unique proposal of testing girls of XI th Std for Anemia and offered to take care of the of those girl students who tested anemia positive by offering free treatment and dietary advice.
Ganapati Visarjan:
During Ganesh visarjan our NSS volunteers were involved in crowd management along with the Mumbai Traffic police. They guided Ganesh Bhakts towards the beach and controlled the crowd movements. Our volunteers also collected Nirmalya after visarjan from Girgaum Chowpatty and Juhu beaches with the support of NGO United ways Mumbai.
Red ribbon Activities:
The Red Ribbon Express is a train whose compartments exhibit every information of HIV/AIDS by way of posters, models, audio and video clips and which halts at Mumbai CST on 1st Dec that is world AIDs day. This year also our volunteers were engaged in Red Ribbon activities through out the year. We had various programmes on the Dadar Chowpatty which is located just behind our college. We held an AIDS awareness rally displaying HIV/AIDS banners by MDACS, a poster exhibition, street play on AIDS on various Saturdays. Our volunteers helped in organizing the blood donation at Dadar Central Railway station. We organized a blood donation drive in the campus in September.
Disaster Management:
The NSS unit organized a disaster management training camp under the guidance of Dr Deepak Patil of Life Supporters Institute of Health Science(LIHS) who introduced volunteers to the concept of first aid, and also spoke of the various first aid techniques for various types of

accidents and emergency situations. He also demonstrated these techniques on a human model. In addition he also demonstrated the use of the bandages and the use of splint during fractures, how to carry an injured body to the nearest hospital, etc. They were also shown techniques of artificial breathing.
In the second leg of the training programme organised for two days, Mr. Abhay Kale, Chief training Officer, Bandra Fire Station spoke on causes of fire, types of fires, fire extinguishers, fire brigades and fire stations and techniques on fire fighting. In the next session Dr Deepak Patil(LIHS) continued from his earlier session on first aid and progressed on to the ABC of Disaster management for a first respondent team.
On the second day, Mr. Rajesh Lokhande of the Disaster Management Cell , B.M.C. spoke about the various disasters that have been occurring in the recent past and their severity. In the next session, Mr. S.S. Madge Asst. Dy. Controller, Civil Defence corps, Gr. Mumbai displayed practically different types of knots using ropes and their applicability during disasters.
Kirti Kiran Project:
This is a project dear to the Kirti NSS Unit. Every year slum children who stay in slums beyond the Dadar Western railway platforms towards Matunga. are brought by our volunteers to Kirti College every Sunday. Children relax by playing for some time on the college grounds after which they participate in various activities like art, handicrafts, etc. Children who go to school are also coached in subjects that they find difficult by our volunteers. Our children celebrated various festivals like Rakhsa Bandhan, Dahi Handi, Divali, etc with them.
Beach Cleaning:
After the Ganapati Visarjan activity, the Coast Guards organize a beach cleaning activity to inculcate in citizens the spirit of keeping our beaches clean. During this clean up activity volunteers collect debris lying on the beach in environmental friendly gunny bags that are disposed by the Coast Guards.
Pulse polio drive:
Volunteers were trained to give polio drops and participated in the pulse polio drive at Shivaji Park. Ms. Ashwini Worlikar and Mst. Jeetendra Jagtap were adjudged the best volunteers for this academic year for their able leadership and zest and enthusiasm in all the activities they organised.
