selectability officially opens wellbeing practice in Mackay

Mackay residents can connect with a range of mental wellbeing services within The Dome with the launch of a new practice on 26 June 2018.

The Mental Wellbeing Practice provides access to a range of services to support individuals, their families and carers.

selectability CEO, Debra Burden said bringing the services together meant that Mackay consumers could access the support they needed at each stage of their recovery.

“At selectability we believe that everyone deserves to have access to the right support when they need it,” she said.

“This Medicare bulk-billed practice means that we are able to provide support to people for no out-of-pocket expense.

Townsville in January and we are delighted to open our second here in Mackay.”

The Mental Wellbeing Practice offers a range of individual and group support services; psychology and counselling; family and carer support including the Ice Help project; along with the coordination and implementation of the region’s suicide prevention network.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson welcomed the opening of the practice.

“It is great to see a holistic approach to the delivery of important mental wellbeing services,” said Cr Williamson.

“Often people don’t know where to start when seeking help for a mental health condition.

“Having a range of services delivered from the one practice takes away the stress of dealing with multiple providers.”

Caring for carers

The value of the support family and friends provide to loved ones living with mental illness shouldn’t be underestimated. According to a 2016 report by Mind Australia and the University of Queensland it would cost national and state governments A$13.2 billion to provide the same level of support in the mental health service sector!

This support can include assistance with practical activities like shopping, cooking and managing medication. While people with more severe forms of mental illness may need support with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing and eating.

selectability’s clinical psychologist, Dr Emma Black said that families and friends usually took on the role of carer with little training or support and often at the expense of their own needs and mental health.

“Family and friends play an essential role in supporting a person living with mental illness but they need care, too” said Dr Black.

Throughout the year selectability delivered a range of free programs and activities to provide valuable opportunities for carers to come together and manage their own stress levels in a friendly and supportive environment.

Group sessions (commenced April 2018): In the psychologist facilitated sessions, participants were provided with techniques and strategies for caring for their own wellbeing while continuing to support a loved one living with mental illness.

Carers retreat (25 & 26 June 2018): selectability partnered with Carers Queensland to deliver a two-day, one-night retreat for 65 carers. It was aimed at people with a more intensive caring role to provide a well-deserved opportunity to get away for the night, reboot and connect with peers.

Defence High Tea (13 June 2018): The event was aimed at partners of Defence personnel, in recognition of the challenges they faced. Around 60 partners with common experiences came together in a social setting to learn from each other and hear some tips for coping with Defence life.

Training and awareness key to suicide prevention

Suicide prevention is everybody’s business and learning the skills to recognise the signs is a simple and effective way to respond to the problem

According to selectability Townsville Suicide Prevention Manager, Adriel Burley, intervention and training programs that focus on teaching the skills for recognising at risk individuals and better equipping them to support and respond are vital in reducing the suicide deaths and attempts.

“The transient nature of the Townsville’s population means that people can feel disconnected from, and isolated within the community, leaving people at a higher risk of suicide.”

Educating the community on how to help is a key strategy under the Townsville Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan and short courses are available to address the issue.

“Completing the four-hour Mental Health First Aid (suicide prevention) course is recommended as part of the community action plan,”

“It provides tools for everyday people to recognise if someone is struggling and actions that can be taken,” said Mr Burley.
