I am Jhon Bayro Marriaga Gomez, student of last
semester of mining engineering, it is an honor for me to
be part of the SME, since this society brings together
the best professionals in the world.
Being part of the SME, is an excellent opportunity to
grow as a professional, learn leadership, teamwork and
be able to interact with experts in different modalities
around the world.
Currently we are part of the student chapter SME-UFPS

perspective of mining in our country, and that we can
achieve a great impact worldwide, we hope that over
time will be more UFPS students those who are part of
this chapter.
In the student chapter SME-UFPS we have great
expectations of participation in the annual SME events,
in order to learn and promote in all parts of the world, a
high-quality mining, which together with the excellent
professionals that we are part of this society we can get.

Mining Engineering Student, Francisco de Paula Santander University, CO. Direct: (+57) 3016264284 E-mail:
My name is RICARDO BARRIOS, student of Mining
Engineering and System Technician. In this time of work,
I have had wonderful experiences as treasurer and
member of the student chapter SME-UFPS, acquiring
therefore skills and abilities to perform the position, it is
very rewarding to have participated in the different
activities to make the chapter grow economically with
different activities, taking into account that the money
collected in the previous period served us for expenses
and support of the chapter.
In the period 2019-2020 we have grown enormously as a
chapter in terms of members and funds, this has been
happening since our efforts for the creation of the SME-
UFPS since August 2018, making the relevant processes
for the payment of memberships and the elaboration of
the statutes. As a main function, to collect and manage
money efficiently, the following table specifies the total
funds and expenses (COP) we had according to our
activities as SME-UFPS chapter, since we are in charge
of paying all the needs of our events.

1.3. SECRETARY ’S REPORT
I am Ana María Salé Duarte, a seventh semester
mining engineering student and part of the student
chapter SME UFPS, proudly delegating the position of
secretary.
It is possible to change the perspective of mining by
adopting the development of new technologies
supported by the pillar of efficiency, without leaving
aside social and environmental responsibility, and to
achieve this it is important to take into account the
ideas contributed from academia that are directed to
the productive sector through various educational
activities such as: Conferences, training, seminars,
debates among other factors that contribute to the
strengthening of mining in the country, highlighting the
fundamental objective of the student chapter SME-
UFPS.
Belonging to the SME is an opportunity to improve the
academic process and professional profile in the
future, in addition to this, it has a digital research center
aimed at the entire mining community, in which you can
find technical documents, books, and other articles that
contribute to professional and personal knowledge,
thanks to this type of tools is that we appreciate being
part of the SME.

PLAYING AT BEING A MINER
This activity was carried out in order to give
future university students in the department
of Norte de Santander an approach to mining
from an engineering point of view and
implementing ideals of mining well done in
order to debunk many mining myths. It began
with a tour of the university campus to
familiarize the children with the institution,
there were about 20 children.

NATIONAL MINING AGENCY
The Francisco de Paula Santander
University (UFPS) has a branch of the
national mining agency, so it was a great
contribution that could be given to the
children. Where the equipment used in
mining emergencies was shown and how
such equipment is used in a didactic and
easy to understand way for the children

MINERALOGY AND PETROGRAPHY
LABORATORY
The tour continues in the physical plant of
the mining engineering faculty which takes
us to one of the most important theoretical
and practical laboratories, the laboratory of
mineralogy and petrography where the
diversity of minerals, structures,
characteristics and properties of the same
are studied. The great amount of minerals
found in the world was made known. And
samples that the laboratory has were
shown to have a more accurate
contextualization and talking about each of
them; as their most common uses and
characteristics.

16
COURSE CLOSURE
The tour ends in the mining engineering auditorium where one of
our colleagues Andrea Katherine Martinez gives a short lecture
summarizing the whole tour and key aspects of our career so that
the children understand the importance of our career and the
activities that can be done in a correct and environmentally friendly
way.
MUSICAL SHOW BY THE BATUTA
FOUNDATION
The foundation, as a way of thanking all the
contributions given by the university and
the student chapter SME, made a small
sample of a musical show prepared by
them where they play traditional Colombian
music and some songs from other
countries showing the talent and the
contribution to society that this type of
foundation makes by helping young people
of scarce resources to follow paths of
culture and art.
