A message from the Chair of GovernorsDear Parent/Carers,

Yet another busy year has gone by, with school concerts, trips and lots of dedication and hard work from ourpupils. At Ysgol Pum Heol we continue to use the best teaching practices, in order to ensure all our pupilsobtain their best possible outcomes, and do so in a happy and safe learning environment.

This year has seen Ysgol Pum Heol form a collaborative working partnership with other local schools. TheLearning Partnership started formally in November of 2018 and has been huge success. We, as a governingbody, have been working closely with Mrs Rumble to ensure that the school maintains the high teachingstandards we have come to expect.. The governing body recognise that none of the high standards could beachieved without the dedication of our entire school staff.

Finally I would like to say that none of this would be possible without the support of you, our parents, grand-parents and carers. It is you who help with homework, read with your child, provide uniformsand support us during concerts, fetes and all the other parental engagements that you make a success with us.

Best WishesCll J Jones Chair of the Governing Body

Target SettingGovernors have worked with the headteacher to set targets for the forthcoming years. The process ofagreeing targets is based on the following principles:

Targets should be challenging, realistic and manageable; They should be school specific, reflecting an informed evaluation of each year group of

children; In order to be meaningful, targets should be considered over a time span of more than one

year; Class teachers have a crucial role to play in the setting of targets and are fully involved in the

process.

Target 95%

Actual Attendance 94.08%

Authorised Absence 5.89%

Unauthorised Absence 0.03%

Attendance InformationAttendance is extremely importantto us at Ysgol Pum Heol . We runlots of initiatives for our pupils to

encourage good attendance. Pleasefind below our percentageattendance for 2018/19.

In line with these principles, teachers use the widerange of information they have about each child in theirclass to set an individual target level in national curriculum tasks and tests. This is a whole school initiative and teachers work hard to ensure that each individual target is challenging, but realistic. These individual targets are collated to form aggregate targets for each yeargroup. The targets were set in the Autumn term, and progress reviewed every half term.

The school provides sufficient toilets for the number of pupils on roll. These toilets are cleaned on a daily basis.

School Links with the Community, Business and IndustryYsgol Pum Heol is keen to promote links with local businesses and other organisations within our community and benefits greatly from their support.

We have established close links with a number of local sports organisations. The children at the school havebenefitted from the coaching provided by experts withinthese organisations and have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in sporting initiatives during the Year.

Children have many opportunities to listen to a widerange of speakers from various agencies. These includeour community police liaison officer, Assemblymembers, Member of Parliament, local clergy, the fire brigade, school dentist, school nurse and other visitors who bring with them specialist skills andknowledge.

We have strong links with many cluster primary schools, secondary schools and other educational establishments. We aim to ensure a smooth transition for our Year 6pupils as they move to their retrospective high schools. Visits are planned each year giving opportunities to attenda range of lessons. Liaison meetings take place betweenteachers of all cluster schools in a number of areas eachyear including – English, Welsh, Mathematics and Science. Pupils visit secondary schools in the area to meet other children who will be attending the school. Transitionactivities include a mix of social and educational tasks.

Once again this year, there has been tremendous support for the school PTA’s varied programme of events and fund raising activities. The Governors would like to thank the PTA which contributes so much to the school. Other charities that we regularly support include Children in Need, Comic Relief, Save the Children and Cancer support.

Sport plays an important part in school life. Children participate in a variety of team games as an integral part of the PE curriculum. All children are included within these sessions and we aim to insure that each child finds a degree of personal success and enjoyment. Sports Days and fun runs for Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 were well attended, providing an enjoyable day for children and their families.

We are mindful too of the need to help children to keep fit and active and PTA support enabled us to buy into whole school yoga a fun way for children to develop body awareness and learn tools to keep them calm, present and happy.

Curriculum Organisation andTeachingAt Ysgol Pum Heol we support the concept of lifelong learning, recognising that both adults at school andchildren learn new things every day. We maintain that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyableexperience for everyone. Through our teaching we seek to equip children with the skills, knowledge andunderstanding necessary to be able to make informed choices about the important things in their lives.

We recognise that people learn best in different ways: mostlessons incorporate aspects to support pupils who learn bestthrough visual, audio and kinaesthetic approaches. However,we do not usually label children as specific types of learners.Rather we aim to provide a rich and varied learningenvironment that supports children in developing their skills andabilities in a range of ways, in order to achieve their full potential.Through our teaching we aim to develop pupils who are:

Ambitious, capable learners Enterprising, creative contributors Ethical, informed citizens Healthy confident individuals.

The ALN policy incorporates the statutory code of practice for special needs and aims to provide equal access to the curriculum for all children. Our school ALNCO is Mrs Rumble, who deals with all ALNincluding statemented pupils.

The majority of our pupils speak English as their first language. Our school is an English medium school.

The school fully utilises and embeds the literacy and numeracy framework into teaching, alongside the DCF which aims to promote pupils digital competency.

Welsh Language – Yr Iaith Gymraeg

It is important that the children of Ysgol Pum Heol as it enrichestheir knowledge and understanding of the culture and heritage ofWales. It develops their personalities and ability to contributeto the community giving them a sense of place and identity. Werecognise that only a few children at Ysgol Pum Heol speak Welshat home and that school is often their only contact with thelanguage and culture of Wales.

The aims of teaching Welsh at Ysgol Pum Heol are; To develop pupils knowledge, understanding and skills within an integrated programme of speaking

How are we making sure that every child reaches their potential

As a school we wish to continue to build on high standards through exciting learning. The school identifies and supports children with specific needs including more able and talented children.. Progress is carefully monitored and tracked, intervention programmes are in place and, if external support is thought necessary, this is sought.

The school has a close working relationship with parent/carers and they are kept informed and involved. Pupil voice is sought in development at Ysgol Pum Heol , including those in the curriculum. Additionalpractitioners reinforce and support learning effectively, working with groups and/or individuals depending on the needs identified.

Teachers assess all pupils’ learning both informally and formally and targets are discussed and regularly reviewed with pupils. Underperforming groups are supported and their progress is specifically tracked so that they attain their potential.
