University of Detroit Mercy ishelping meet the current needfor engineers trained in SystemsEngineering with its new SystemsEngineering Graduate Certificate.

Detroit Mercy has been amongthe national leaders in SystemsEngineering education throughits Master of Science in ProductDevelopment (MPD) program,said school spokesman GaryErwin. Now, students have achance to earn a graduate certifi-cate in Systems Engineering.

“What we’ve done is taken – inmy opinion – the highest impactclasses out of the MPD program,in terms of systems engineering,and compiled them into a tight,unified curriculum that exposesengineers to the current state ofthe art in systems engineering,”said Michael Vinarcik, adjunctprofessor at Detroit Mercy.

The Systems Engineering Grad-uate Certificate was created injoint with the Ford Motor Compa-ny, which already had employeesenrolled in and graduating fromthe MPD program, Vinarcik said.

The credits earned in the Sys-tems Engineering Graduate Cer-tificate program can be used to-ward earning a master’s degree.

“It’s a great program,” saidFord employee Kyle Ebner. “I feltat home here. I felt like I couldtalk to any of the professors any-time I needed to, and they reallystrive to answer questions, evenafter hours. I think I learned morethan I expected I was going tolearn. I would recommend it toothers and I have at work.”

Detroit Mercy’s professors arereadily available to students, andthey are also widely respected inthe field of systems engineering,said Vinarcik.

Erwin said Vinarcik is consid-ered one of the most visible Sys-tems Engineering experts in thecountry and routinely speaks atsystems engineering conferenceshosted by the InternationalCouncil on Systems Engineering(INCOSE), National Defense In-dustrial Association (NDIA) andthe American Society for Engi-neering Education (ASEE).

He recently keynoted the 2017No Magic World Symposium.

“Mike brings a wealth of back-ground and experience in sys-tems engineering,” said DarrellKleinke, director of the SystemsEngineering Graduate Certificateprogram. “He’s taught in ourMaster of Product Development

department for many years.Without exception, his coursesare very well received. These areexperienced engineers takingthese classes, instantly applyingwhat they’ve learned in our pro-gram to their jobs and careers,

By fall 2017, Maven Gig willlaunch in Boston, Phoenix andWashington, D.C., and Baltimoreand Detroit will soon join themix, Rice said. This will be goodfor freelancers who want free-dom and flexibility, and MavenGig provides both.

Take “Jamie,” for example, whoearns a couple hundred dollarsas a freelancer picking up anddropping off passengers as a li-censed driver for a ridesharingcompany on an average Fridaynight, Rice said.

With Maven Gig, Jamie cannow increase earning power byadding other gigs. For instance,spending two hours during thelunch rush delivering food addsanother $30-$50. Delivering pack-ages and groceries during theday adds even more, Rice said.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV with anEPA-estimated range of 238 all-

electric miles is the most popularvehicle among Maven Gig driv-ers, Rice said. More than 100 BoltEVs are available in Los Angelesand that number will double bythe end of 2017. Bolt EVs in SanFrancisco will double to morethan 125 by the end of the year.

In Boston, Maven Gig will startwith 20 Bolt EVs and will scale asinfrastructure allows.

The annual celebration of De-troit’s automotive history beginson Friday, Aug. 18, and Detroit’sautomakers are joining in on thecelebration.

This year, Ford became an offi-cial sponsor of the DreamCruise, and will be setting up a“Mustang Alley” located on EastNine Mile and Woodward in Fern-dale.

This year’s Mustang Alley willbe the largest ever, featuringeven more examples of the mus-cle car, including the new 2018Mustang, which hits dealershowrooms later this year.

In addition to its MustangAlley display nearing 20 years inFerndale, Ford will host newevents and displays in RoyalOak, including presenting its per-formance lineup in the Duggan’sIrish Pub parking lot and Nor-mandy Plaza.

ager of a Volkswagen engineeringoffice in suburban Detroit whowas arrested in January while onvacation in Miami. He faces up tofive years in prison for conspira-cy to defraud the U.S., wire fraudand violation of the Clean AirAct.A second count of giving false

statement under the Clean AirAct carries a possible sentenceof up to two years in prison.He remains jailed and is sched-

uled to be sentenced Dec. 6. Healso could face deportation.Schmidt is accused of telling

regulators technical problemswere to blame for the differencein emissions in road and labtests.“Schmidt participated in a

fraudulent VW scam that priori-tized corporate sales at the ex-pense of the honesty of emis-sions tests and trust of the Amer-ican purchasers,” Deputy Assis-tant Attorney General Jean E.Williams, who is in the JusticeDepartment’s Environment andNatural Resources Division, saidin a news release following theplea.Schmidt’s attorney declined to

pressing Volkswagen over emis-sions test discrepancies and thecheating had been going on forseveral years. In 2015, news

emerged in the U.S. of Volkswa-gen’s use of software that turnedoff emissions controls.The software detected when

cars were being tested andturned the emissions controls offduring normal driving.The result was the cars emit-

ted more than 40 times the U.S.limit for the pollutant nitrogenoxide.Schmidt told Cox that VW

management directed him in2015 not to discuss the software.Some 11 million cars world-

wide were equipped with thesoftware. Meeting U.S. emissionsstandards were part of the com-pany’s “clean diesel” marketingstrategy.“You knew these representa-

tions made to U.S. consumerswere false,” Cox told Schmidt.Volkswagen reached a $15 bil-

lion civil settlement in the UnitedStates with environmental au-thorities and automobile owners.

ber, told The Associated Pressthat he died Aug. 3 at a hospitalin Danbury, Conn.Peckolick was 76 at the time of

his death and died from compli-cations from head trauma suf-fered in a fall.After struggling through art

school at Pratt Institute, Peck-olick became a protege of graph-ic designer Herb Lubalin and ab-sorbed the styles of such artistsas George Lois and Saul Bass.Besides his work for General

Motors and other corporateclients, Peckolick also designeda widely admired poster an-nouncing free, late-night muse-um openings in New York andcovers for several books.Peckolick’s own book, “Teach-

ing Type to Talk,” was publishedin 2013. The book detailed howhe used letterforms to solve de-sign problems.In addition to his work for

Ford’s support for militaryfamilies today includes programssuch as nurse assistant trainingthrough the American Red Cross,and providing Ford Blue OvalScholarships to military mem-bers and their spouses to pre-pare them for careers in health-care.

Designers of the new minivanused a soy-based foam to keepnoise from entering the passen-ger cabin of the Pacifica, said Ed-ward Cardenas, multimedia edi-tor for Fiat Chrysler.

The 2017 Pacifica has recentlywon awards for lightweighting,Cardenas said.

In order to reduce the weightof the minivan, Fiat Chrysler hadto get creative in the ways thecompany used to get the weightof the Pacifica down, Cardenassaid.

The plant-based foam blocksunwanted noise from enteringthe vehicle cabin while also sav-ing on the overall weight of theminivan.

The soy foam has a lower den-sity than conventional acousticmaterial and weighs less, Carde-nas said.

Since it is lighter, the foam pro-vides yet another weight savingsto the Pacifica, which is nearly250 pounds lighter than its pred-ecessor.

In addition to being lighter, thesoy-based product offers somecharacteristics not2017 ChryslerPacifica Limited found in petrole-um-based products normallyused in such materials.

The soy foam has a lower vis-cosity and a longer shelf life thantraditional acoustic materials,Cardenas said.

The new foam also allowsgreater logistical flexibility forthe plant because its six-monthshelf life is two times longer thanthat of commonly used foam.

This new body sealer was de-veloped and supplied by DowAutomotive Systems.

In addition to being lighter, thelower density requires less foamto be used to achieve the desiredperformance, and it reducescosts.

The soy foam was first usedon vehicles at the SterlingHeights Assembly Plant, andmost recently on the 2014 JeepCherokee.

Crews were also able to adaptexisting equipment to accommo-date the injection process withthe new foam.

Interest rates on new-vehicleloans fell to a six-month low inJuly as automakers ramped upsummer zero-percent financedeals, according to a new analy-sis from Edmunds, the car shop-ping and information platform.

The annual percentage rate(APR) on new financed vehiclesaveraged 4.77 percent in July,down from 4.96 percent in June,said Edmunds spokeswomanMonica Favorite. And 11.3 per-cent of purchasers who financedtook advantage of zero-percentfinancing, up from 9.47 percent inJune and 10.2 percent a year ago.

“Zero-percent finance dealsare common in the summer, butcar buyers can save even morethis year,” said Jessica Caldwell,Edmunds executive director of

industry analysis. “Even thoughinterest rates were lower on av-erage in July than at any time inthe past six months, they’re stillhovering at highs not seen since2009. These higher interest ratesmake zero-percent financing abig carrot for dealers seeking tolure car shoppers.”

Overall, interest rates on autofinancing have been higher in2017 than in recent years. July’saverage APR is up 5.6 percentyear over year – 14.2 percenthigher than it was five years ago.

“In today’s declining market,every sale counts,” Caldwellsaid. “We anticipate automakerswill continue to ramp up zero-percent finance offers as we getdeeper into the summer sell-down season.”

Flint Group Making PushTo Develop Old GM Site

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) – AAAMichigan says gas pricesstatewide have fallen by about 6cents per gallon since the begin-ning of the month.The Dearborn-based auto club

said that of late Aug. 6 the aver-age price for self-serve regularunleaded gasoline was about$2.42 per gallon.That’s about 9 cents more

than at the same point last year,according to AAA Michiganrecords.AAA Michigan said in its press

release that the lowest averageprice was about $2.32 per gallonin the Saginaw, Bay City and Mid-land areas.The highest was about $2.46 in

the Ann Arbor area, according toAAA Michigan information.The Detroit-area’s average fell

about 1 cent from the previousago to $2.44 per gallon.That’s good news for drives.

It’s the second consecutive weekof declines for Detroit-areaprices.AAA Michigan surveys daily

fuel prices at 2,800 gas stationsacross the state.
