STANLEY Engineered Fasten- ing (SEF), a Chesterfield-based division of Black & Decker that specializes in engineered fasten- ing technologies, is adding to its industry-leading suite of holistic lightweighting systems, said Stanley spokesman Dick Pacini. In addition to its broad portfo- lio of fastening solutions, such as stud-welding systems (SWS) and plastic fasteners, SEF is now translating its next-generation self-pierce rivets (SPRs) to the North American market for the first time, Pacini said. SEF provides system solutions to lightweighting challenges, in- cluding the assembly of alu- minum body panels, which can’t be joined by traditional welding techniques. Demand, Pacini said, for SPRs, which already are well-estab- lished in Europe, is on the rise in North America as automakers in- creasingly adopt materials such as aluminum, which is forecast to grow in the North American automotive industry. According to the Ducker Worldwide “2015 North American Light Vehicle Aluminum Content Study,” within the next decade aluminum sheet for light vehicle body and clo- sure parts will grow from less than 200 million pounds in 2012 to nearly 4 billion pounds. Within the same timeframe, every leading automaker is ex- pected to have an aluminum body program in place, accord- ing to the study. The company got its start in Saginaw and was a part of Delphi in 2009 when Delphi’s global steering operations were sold to GM and renamed Nexteer Auto- motive. In 2010 GM sold Nexteer Automotive to China-based Pacif- ic Century Motors. Nexteer spokeswoman Dawn McDonald said that the decision to move the world headquarters to Auburn Hills from Saginaw was made to move the company closer to the action. Now Nexteer is located in the heart of global automotive industry and closer to the company’s customers. And by moving to a new build- ing, Nexteer also had the oppor- tunity to create a state-of-the -art headquarters that “combines the best of Motown and Silicon Val- ley” to create a vibe that results in the kind of friendly workplace that people want to spend time in, McDonald said. This emphasis on the modern begins when people walk in the front door, McDonald said. The new headquarters is 52,000 square feet spread around two floors. The lobby features digital screens that display different messages and illuminate the room. Currently 150 people work there, but the building has been designed to hold up to 200. The new headquarters also in- cludes a cafeteria with digital screens on the walls. These screens display a mix of compa- ny information and news as well as local traffic and weather con- ditions. They are interactive so it’s possible for people to touch them and access information about the company and even en- gage in social media. “We will have an extended so- cial media presence,” McDonald said. “It will be spread across several different media plat- forms. It encourages employees and our customers to get in- volved in the brand in a more ac- tive way.” McDonald said that Nexteer hasn’t abandoned Saginaw. Man- ufacturing will still take place there and the offices will become a global tech center and the com- pany’s North American division offices. The headquarters will hold the finance, purchasing, legal and hu- man resources departments, among others, McDonald said. Additionally global strategy will be formulated in Auburn Hills. Another advantage to building a new headquarters, said James Collins – IT Infrastructure project manager, is that it allows the company install the latest com- munications equipment. Now, Collins said, the main conference room enjoys tech that makes it possible for people in other cities and countries to have video conferences with the headquarters or other Nexteer facilities. The equipment is so so- phisticated that it’s possible for someone to write on a white- board in a different site and have what’s written projected on a whiteboard in the headquarters conference room. “We looked for tech that could create a virtual experience so people in China and Poland can work together despite distance and time differences,” said Dave Mitchell, Nexteer chief informa- tion officer. McDonald said that the new headquarters also acts as a great recruiting tool. Today’s employ- ees want to work in a modern building. And the new building comes at a time when Nexteer has intro- duced new automotive technolo- gy in automotive markets. The three new stamping press- es were announced in July 2015, when the company said it was in- vest news funds in the facility. The total investment of $166 million investment has brought the latest state-of-the-art stamp- ing technology to the 51-year-old suburban Detroit facility with the installation of two extra-large High Speed Servo Tandem press lines (each 180 inches) and one large Servo Progressive press line. The last new press at Ster- ling Stamping was installed in 2000. On hand to kick off the new press line was Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. He was intro- duced by Sterling Stamping Plant manager Lance Schwartz. “I remember the day Chrysler’s bankruptcy was announced,” Schwartz said. “It was a frightening time for all the people who worked here. We didn’t know if they were going to reopen the doors, so it’s Sterling Stamping Launches New Presses by Jim Stickford As the end of summer ap- proaches the GM Student Corps class of 2016 was honored on Aug. 22 by friends, family and GM executives for the hard work the students did in improving their schools and their neighbor- hoods. The celebration was held in the VEC building at the GM Tech Center in Warren. Since 2013, more than 500 high school students have earned a paycheck while learning real- world work skills and giving back to their communities via the GM Student Corps. This year’s Stu- dent Corps includes 129 students from 13 high schools in metro Detroit, Flint and Pontiac. The program pairs teams of 10 high school interns with retired GM executives and college in- terns to plan and complete com- munity service projects, primari- ly at neighborhood schools and parks. This summer 60 GM retirees and 13 college interns worked with students to develop team- work, leadership skills and a community service mindset. The teams work as small start-ups and manage all aspects of their restoration, repair and clean-up projects, from budgeting, plan- ning and problem solving to exe- cution. The 2016 GM Student Corps schools are Central Collegiate Academy, Detroit Public Schools Cody Campus, East Detroit High School, Flint Southwestern Acad- emy, Hamtramck High School, Harper Woods High School, Hen- ry Ford High School, Madison High School, Melvindale High School, Detroit Public Schools Osborn Campus, Pontiac High School, River Rouge High School and Van Dyke Lincoln High School. “This is the fourth year we’ve done this,” said Heidi Magyar, di- rector of Community Outreach – GM. “We are so proud of what these students have done. They work hard and pick their proj- ects and have a voice in their communities.” The program was first spon- sored by Executive Vice Presi- dent, Global Product Develop- ment, Purchasing and Supply Chain General Motors Mark Reuss. Fiat Chrysler celebrated some-thing of a victory lap at the Ster-ling Stamping Plant on Aug. 26,with the unveiling of three newpresses that will help the facilityprovide parts for the Jeep Wran-gler, which will be assembled atthe retooled Toledo North plant.

As the end of summer ap-proaches the GM Student Corpsclass of 2016 was honored onAug. 22 by friends, family and GMexecutives for the hard work thestudents did in improving theirschools and their neighbor-hoods.

the UAW working closely some-how was bad for the workforce,”Marchionne said. “I want to killthat idea right now. Let’s go backto 2009 and remember thatwhat’s happened here today andover the last seven years is theresult of a whole lot of hard workby a lot of people with a sharedobjective – bringing backChrysler.”Since 2009, Marchionne said,

The futureof Fiat Chrysler is bright as it’sever been and so is your future.This new equipment opens newopportunities for Sterling Stamp-ing to provide parts for the Wran-gler and the Ram 1500, which iscoming to Sterling Assembly.”Once the formal presentation

was over, Marchionne answereda few questions from members ofthe media who were in atten-dance.

The first question was whatwas the situation with MagnetiMarelli, the lighting componentssubsidiary of Fiat Chrysler.Marchionne said that there

have been rumors about the saleof Marelli, but he wasn’t going tocomment. He did note thatMarelli’s strength is in electron-ics and it’s the second largestmaker of automotive lights inthe world. He specifically de-clined to talk of rumors that Sam-sung wanted to buy the compa-ny.Marchionne was then asked

about an SEC investigation overFiat Chrysler’s sales reportingtechniques. He said that thecompany released a report in Ju-ly that talked “ad nauseum”about the issue and that thecompany was collaborating withthe government in its investiga-tion. He also said that there is noone definitive method for report-ing sales in the automotive in-dustry and that Fiat Chrysler hadinherited a reporting model thatChrysler had been using fornearly 40 years.When asked about the upcom-

ing presidential election, Mar-chionne said that didn’t feel itwas appropriate for him to com-ment, but did say that the “worldis a pretty flat place” and thattrade barriers don’t work verywell. He pointed out that Centraland South American countriesthat enacted trade barriers sawno benefits in terms of local in-vestments and that these barri-ers are now coming down.When asked about Fiat

Chrysler’s relationship withGoogle, Marchionne said that asof Aug. 25, the Google peopleseemed to be happy with theprogress the two companieswere making. He said that vehi-cles resulting from the collabora-tion should be hitting the roadnext year and that Fiat Chryslerwill continue to work with othercompanies to develop the tech-nology that consumers are de-manding.

we grew the program in depth,adding programs for studentsthat taught things like financialliteracy. The students got to goto some new places, like Ketter-ing Univeristy. This year justwasn’t about putting downmulch at a school field, it wasabout giving the students workexperience and exposure to thelarger world. Our retirees werevery helpful in teaching the stu-dents about things like that.”

One of the retirees who donat-ed his time this summer was Lar-ry Johnson, who retired from GMseven years ago. His last positionwas as regional manager of Deal-er Development.

“This is my third year being in-volved in the Student Corps,”Johnson said. “This summer Iworked with students from De-troit’s Central High School, and Iwant to say that the studentswere outstanding. Sometimes high schoolstudents don’t always get along.But they pulled together and de-veloped into a tight little unit.”

Johnson also praised his UDMstudent intern Blake Packer. Hewas a Student Corps graduateand came back as an intern tohelp mentor the class of 2016.

Student Corps participant Lin-da Dickson is starting her senioryear at Detroit Osborn HighSchool’s Math Science Tech(MST) program.

“This was my first year beinginvolved with the StudentCorps,” Dickson said. “It wasvery energizing to see what wecould do and I got to meet newpeople. Osborn is made up ofthree different schools, so it’shard to know everybody. Weweren’t always friends when westarted. I was surpised that wewere able to work together andget the jobs done.”

Kashawn Bonnett is also start-ing his senior year at Osborn andhe is also in the MST program.

“This is the first time I’ve donethis,” Bonnett said. “My biggestsurprise was seeing the overalleffect of what we did had on thelarger community. The work wedid in and around the schoolchanged the way people actedaround the school. I saw stu-dents, on their own, picking uptrash. It energized the studentsand the teachers and they all hada good feeling about the schooland the community.”

Kataira Green is also startingher senior year at Osborn. She isin the college prepatory track.

“This is my first year,” Green

said. “I decided to be a volunteerwhen I heard GM was involved. Isaid to myself ‘I have to be a partof this.’ I didn’t like what we did –I loved it. I like volunteering any-way and being able to give backto the community and add aspark to the school was an hon-or.”

For Matt Ybarra, working forthe Student Corps in 2016 waslike coming home. He first be-came involved in the program asa UDM student intern.

“I was born in California, butmy parents moved us to Ann Ar-bor where I grew up,” Ybarrasaid. “I first started as a studentintern between my sophemoreand junior year in college at Uni-versity of Detroit-Mercy.”

He said he kept with the pro-gram and when he graduatedwas hired by Magyar to help hercoordinate Student Corps 2016.

“This is exciting for me,” Ybar-ra said. “And to be involved as afull-time GM employee in a pro-gram that I grew up with and seethe changes that have beenmade year over year. I got to seethe changes that the studentshave undergone as they havegone through the program. I getto see them become leaders andbring their schools and commu-nities with them.”

Reuss spoke to the retireesand students about their work atthe celebration, praising theirwork.

Matt Hagan had quite a week-end in the Mopar Express LaneDodge Charger R/T Funny Car atthe NHRA Nationals at BrainerdInternational Raceway. Hagan,racing out of the Don Schumach-er Racing (DSR) pits, blasted to anational record setting run in thefinal round of qualifying on Aug.20 to nab the pole, and on Aug.21, he carried that Mopar mo-mentum all the way to the finalround. The final was the fourthof the year for Hagan and the12th of the season for the Mopar-powered DSR Funny Cars.“We had a great weekend here

at B.I.R.,” said Hagan. “We quali-fied No. 1 and set a nationalrecord. The car was on a stringpretty much all day long, we justcame up a little short in the final.All in all, it was a good pointsday for us, and I’m sure wehelped ourselves a little bitthere.”Hagan certainly had his work

cut out for him in Brainerd – thelast time a Funny Car No. 1 quali-fier won the event was in 2005 –but he had a powerful racecarbeneath him with his trustyDickie Venables-tuned MoparDodge Charger. DETROIT (AP) – Auto partsand electronics company DelphiAutomotive is joining with Israelisoftware maker Mobileye to de-velop the building blocks for afully autonomous car in abouttwo years.

The companies announcedtheir partnership on Aug. 23. It’sanother in a flurry of auto indus-try and tech tie-ups as compa-nies race for self-driving su-premacy.

Delphi and Mobileye plan tobuild a complete autonomousdriving platform that they willsell to automakers around theworld.

They promise to demonstratethe technology at January’s Con-sumer Electronics Show andhave it ready for production in2019.

Delphi already has taken an au-tonomous Audi on a cross-coun-try drive, while Mobileye makessoftware that processes datafrom cameras and other sensors.

The companies didn’t givemany financial details but saidthey would share developmentcosts for a total combined invest-

ment of a few hundred milliondollars.

Mobileye will provide its nextgeneration chip that processessignals from multiple sensors, aswell as software used for real-time mapping.

Delphi will contribute auto-mated driving software algo-rithms and controls for camera,radar and laser sensors.

The partnership is the latestas old-line auto companies com-bine their strengths with tech-nology companies as they try tostay competitive on autonomouscars.

Earlier this month ride-hailingcompany Uber announced apartnership with Volvo and ac-quired a San Francisco startupcalled Otto to work on au-tonomous vehicles. Uber said itplans to test autonomous cars bycarrying passengers in a fewweeks in Pittsburgh, with humanbackup drivers. In January Gen-eral Motors invested $500 millionin Lyft, Uber’s prime competitor,and it bought Cruise Automation,a West Coast autonomous soft-ware company.
