The Detroit-based media hadthe chance to see the new FiatChrysler Portal concept vehiclelast week during the 2017 NAIASpress preview.“This is a concept vehicle,”

said Cindy Juette, a Fiat Chryslerinterior designer who worked onthe Portal. “We are still learningwhat people think of the vehicle.We want to know what featuresare best-liked, so that we mightconsider putting them in futurecars. Just because this is a con-cept vehicle doesn’t mean that itwill be built in the future.”The thing to remember about

the Portal, Juette said, was it wasdesigned with the idea that carsare fashion for some drivers andothers like the utility aspects of avehicle.“We have a control panel with

a steering mechanism, not steer-ing wheel, that retracts duringthe vehicle’s autonomous drivingphase,” Juette said. “That’s be-cause we focused on the alloca-tion of space. As autonomoustechnology becomes more com-mon and more sophisticated, theidea is to be able to stow awaythe steering mechanism for morespace up front.”And, Juette said, the Portal’s

door on the side is five feet wide,making it larger than any liftgateused by minivans or SUVs.“The thinking is that it should

be easy to get either people orcargo into the vehicle,” Juettesaid. “As we get feedback, we willadapt the best features for futurevehicles.”And, Juette said, the autonomy

technology used for the portal isat level three. As the technologyimproves up to level five, the ve-hicle was designed and built sothat it could be updated as techimproves.“I know we’ve taken some hits

for saying the Portal was a vehi-cle designed by the Millennialgeneration for the Millennial gen-eration,” Juette said. “But, first, itgot people talking and that’s nota bad thing. But most important-ly, we designed it with that 30-year-old who has just started hisor her business in mind.“That person might only need

one seat so that Portal can beused to haul cargo. If that persongets married, more seats canbe added for the spouse and anyfuture children.”People she has spoken to like

that idea of flexibility, Juettesaid.“When you work on a project

like this from the inside out,”Juette said. “You want to hearwhat people think of your work.And when we designed the Por-tal, we wanted to know how peo-ple actually use their vehicles,as opposed to how we tell them

how to use their vehicles. That’sthe idea behind using differentmodules in the design. The vehi-cle can be adapted to the user, asopposed to the user adapting tothe vehicle.”Juette said they thought about

the seats. They mounted theseats on a narrow pedestal so

that people have room for theirfeet underneath the seat.“We went for an open look, but

if we hear from people that thePortal is too open and they feelvulnerable, we can always makechanges. That’s the beauty of aconcept vehicle like our newPortal.”

Detroit-based Adient, the glob-al automotive seating supplier,has collaborated with FiatChrysler to produce a vision ofthe future of seating for theautomaker’s Chrysler Portal con-cept vehicle.The Chrysler Portal is a for-

ward-thinking interpretation ofthe “fifth generation” of familytransportation targeted at themillennial generation, saidAdient spokeswoman Mary KayDodero.The vehicle was unveiledby Fiat Chrysler at the ConsumerElectronics Show in Las Vegasearlier this month.The seat was also displayed at

Adient’s booth at the 2017 NorthAmerican International AutoShow (NAIAS) in Detroit’s CoboCenter last week.Designed with supplier part-

ners such as Adient, the interiorof the Chrysler Portal concept,said Dodero, offers the driverand passengers a “third space” –an open and serene atmospherethat provides an alternative envi-ronment between work andhome.“We took great pride in collab-

narrow pedestal design that hasmultiple embedded functions.For example, the pedestal in-cludes a release handle for easyadjustment when the seat is in astadium flip-up position.The Chrysler Portal vehicle

seat also offers a new approachto reclining, which includes aproprietary relationship to cush-ion adjustment.

January Brings Real Chili Weather

DETROIT (AP) – Thirteen au-tomakers are recalling more than652,000 vehicles in the U.S. in thelatest round of dangerous Takataair bag inflator recalls.Automakers with recalls post-

ed Jan. 19 are Audi, Nissan,Jaguar-Land Rover, Subaru,Daimler Vans, Tesla, Mitsubishi,BMW, Ferrari, Mercedes, Mazda,McLaren and Karma. All the re-calls are to replace front passen-ger inflators.Takata inflators can explode

with too much force, blowingapart a metal canister and send-ing shrapnel into the passengercompartment. Sixteen peoplehave died worldwide and morethan 180 have been hurt due tothe problem.The recall is among the latest

round of Takata recalls covering5.7 million vehicles involving 19automakers in the U.S. In total,it's the largest auto recall in U.S.history, affecting 69 million infla-tors and 42 million vehicles.About 100 million inflators havebeen recalled worldwide.

General Motors launched itssecond annual Discover YourDrive diversity journalism pro-gram Jan. 7-11, hosting 13 collegestudents and nine journalistsfrom across the country at De-troit’s North American Interna-tional Auto Show.Students from diverse back-

grounds participated in the pro-gram, which promotes diversityin automotive journalism andnews coverage, said GMspokesman Margarita Bauza.Discover Your Drive ended

Jan. 11 with an awards presenta-tion recognizing students fortheir work at NAIAS as well astheir social media presence dur-ing a scavenger hunt through De-troit, Bauza said.Students used the new, award-

Smarter, Eckert said, is repre-sented by new features, includ-ing pre-collision assist technolo-gy and the uses of cameras andradar to enable the driver tohave a better sense of what’sahead.

“The truck will give an audiblewarning to the driver if some-thing is up ahead and the brakeswill activate automatically if thedriver doesn’t respond to thatwarning,” Eckert said. “Also, the2018 F-150 will have adaptivecruise control, a segment first.”

As to being more capable, Eck-ert said that’s pretty straightfor-ward – it’s the best towing F-150ever, Eckert said.

The details of the plan will notbe released to the public at thistime, Krell said.

“There is no timeline for whenwe will share the details, butthey will be released to the pub-lic as the plans come close to be-ing put into action,” Krell said.

GM’s announcement is part ofthe company’s increased focuson overall efficiency over the lastfour years, Barra said.

With a strategy to streamlineand simplify its operations andgrow its business, GM has creat-ed 25,000 jobs in the UnitedStates – approximately 19,000 en-gineering, IT and professionaljobs and 6,000 hourly manufac-turing jobs – and added nearly$3 billion in annual wages andbenefits to the U.S. economyover that period.

At the same time, General Mo-tors reduced more than 15,000positions outside the UnitedStates, bringing most of thosejobs to America, Barra said.

During that same period oftime, the company moved from90 percent of its IT work being

outsourced to an insourced U.S.-based model.

“We will continue our commit-ment to driving a more efficientbusiness,” said Barra, “as shownby our insourcing of more than6,000 IT jobs that were formerlyoutside the U.S., streamlining ourengineering operations from sev-en to three, with the core engi-neering center being in Warren,Michigan, and building on ourmomentum at GM Financial andin advanced technologies. Thesemoves, and others, are expectedto result in more than 5,000 newjobs in the U.S. over the next fewyears.”

GM has also been facilitatingits supplier base to do the same,Barra said.

The company has been execut-ing a strategy to create supplierparks adjacent to its UnitedStates manufacturing sites (al-ready accomplished at GM’s Fair-fax Assembly Plant in Kansas,Spring Hill Assembly Plant inTennessee, Fort Wayne AssemblyPlant in Indiana, and LordstownAssembly Plant in Ohio), and willcontinue to expand this effort,she said.

Supplier parks locating nearassembly facilities result in sig-nificant savings from reducedtransportation costs, higherquality communications andcontinuous improvement activi-ties as suppliers are located clos-er to the final assembly location,Barra said.

In addition, General Motors isconfirming that another supplierhas committed to make compo-nents for GM’s next-generationfull-size pickup trucks in Michi-gan.

This action will move about100 supplier jobs from Mexico tothe United States.
