distinguished invited guests on the day - members of the Board of Management, former staff members - Mr. David O’Brien and Mrs. Mary Ahern and Mrs. Tess McCarthy (niece of Con O’Donovan), Mrs. Ann O’Donovan, Peter and Sarah Jane O’Donovan and members of the O’Donovan family Casheliskey and Mrs. Angela McCarthy. All the staff of the school took on different tasks to ensure the day was a memorable one for the boys. Each class did a project on 1916 e.g. The 1916 Leaders, Women of the Revolution etc. The senior classes also wrote a new proclamation for 2016 and this is reproduced on the last page of this Links. Three bands in the school wrote a song each for the occasion and they have been submitted to the “Song for ‘16” Competi-tion. Michael Deegan, Daniel O’Donovan and Fergal Murphy performed their song at the Flag Raising Ceremony. The boys in Rang 6 worked with pottery to create tiles (which were fired in our kiln) which represented differing aspects of the rising. These were framed by Kate Fitzgerald and can be seen hanging in our school. We also erected 6 new flagpoles along our driveway and we thank Finbarr O’Connor very much for his assistance with this and many other projects associated with the day. Mr. Tadhg O’Driscoll, Mr. Michael Harte and Mr. Denis Murphy assisted by Finbarr have created a 1916 classroom in our foyer which will remain there until June. Mrs. Elaine Connolly dressed the boys up as they would have looked in 1916 to create a living classroom. Finally we planted a tree to mark the occasion and unveiled a plaque to remember our past pupils who played a prominent part in the rising. Mr. O’Driscoll has also catalogued Roll Books and Inspector’s reports dating back to 1890!. I wish to thank all the staff of the school for their assistance in making this a great occasion for the boys in our school. Please turn to page 9 and page 11 for photographs and check out our photosite for over 80 photographs of the day.

National School visited our school for a debate. Our debate team consisted of Daniel Daly (team captain), Simon Jennings and my-self. We also had three subs who were Chinaza Ogwudiegwu, Eoin Downey and Tim McCarthy. The motion was “Uniforms are a good idea” and we opposed the motion. We’ve been practicing for the debate for a couple weeks. Ironically, on the day of the debate, it was a non-uniform day. So it was quite fitting for our motion. During the debate, both teams gave great points and good rebuttals. The score were very close but we were successful on the day. We would like to thank the team researchers for all their hard work. We would also like to thank the adjudicator, Mr Fin-barr O’Donovan and Castledonovan N.S. for coming to our school. We will be advancing to the next round and if we win the next round we’ll be first team in our school’s history. We will be going away this time, we will be looking forward to the challenge.

All cans gratefully received. Please contact Ms. Regina Fitzmaurice if you have any query re. this matter. Many thanks to Ms. Fitzmaurice.. She and her class will also look after the school garden and glasshouse. The money that is collected by this scheme is used in the school garden. Thanks to Ja-mie and Sam for helping with cans this year.

O’Neill and Mr. Denis Murphy for their assistance. Eoin Downey. 6th Class

On March 10th 5th and 6th class boys went orienteering in Newcastle West Demesne. It was the Munster Championship so we were all looking for-

ward to the day. We were up early in the morning to head off up to Limer-ick. The bus trip was very enjoyable. We all did our best and we did very

well. In 6th class we won the team event and we won the 5th class team event also so we are both Munster

Champions. Mikey Alverez won the 5th

class event, making him the Munster

Champion and I, Eoin Downey, won the 6th class event,

making me also the Munster Champion.

Overall it was a miraculous day out

with an extra treat

afterwards when we stopped

in Supermac’s.

We want to say thanks to Thelma who organised the

bus, thanks to Ms O Keefe who came with us on the

day and was a massive help with our maps and points. A huge thank you to Ms

Fitzmaurice who coached us all through the year. We’ll

be going to the All Irelands in May so we are all looking

forward to that.

“Just One” Cent boxes continue again this year. Jack, Eoin and Adam will be in charge of or-ganising the collection each week. This year we have got off to a great start with the Hoola Hoop Coin Challenge. So far we have collected €1423.11 this

year! This has passed out last year’s total al-ready. This time last year €181 was collected. Well done Adam, Jack and Eoin! Every week on a Friday the boys call to each classroom to collect the money that has been brought in during the week.

If you would like to book an ad for the coming school year 2014 -2015 please let Thelma know as soon as possible. The number of ads is limited. Our Links goes to all parents in the school - 10 times a year - at the beginning of each month. The cost is €20 per issue or at a discount of €150 for the entire year! Please ring Thelma 8834487 if you are interested.

On Saturday the 24th of March. Tomas, Jim and I went up to Water-

ford Crystal Pool to represent Cork for the Munster’s. The Munster’s is a qualifier for the All Irelands. In the Munster’s the top 6 from each race would qualify for the All Irelands in Dublin. On April the

2nd the All Irelands started. It was in Tallaght Aquatic Centre. It was a very tough competition. There were 12 counties at the All

Irelands and Cork won over all. Its Cork 2nd time in a row winning the pool lifesaving

and we have won it three times in a row in the sea. We

hope Cork will win the Munster’s and

the All Irelands in the sea this year.

Thank you Justin and Alice for training us this year. We could-

n’t have won it with-out them. By Mi-

chael Deegan

A number of boys in the school are allergic to nuts and for them any contact with nuts or products containing traces of nuts can be dangerous for example NUTEL-LA!!!! Please be aware of this when organising your child’s lunch and if possible do not allow your child to bring anything containing nuts to school. Your help in this matter is very much appreciated. p.s. Please give your children water to drink coming to school - not sweet or fizzy drinks.

It would be so much safer if you did not bring children across the road by the hand at 3.00 p.m. often crossing between cars and traffic, which can be dangerous and may even encourage another child to at-tempt the same on his own with possible disastrous consequences. Please, always use the wardens, when on duty and, at the very least, the zebra crossing which is there for this purpose. Thank you.

POBLACHT NA H EIREANN2016

THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT

OF THE

IRISH REPUBLIC TO THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND.

PEOPLE OF IRELAND here we stand 100 years later after the proclamation of 1916. Thanks to those Irish people in our past we can now shape the future of Ireland. We must always remember the past while looking to the future. We deserve a bright future but only we can create that future for ourselves. I think Ireland should make a difference. The government needs to tackle homeless-ness. Every person has a right to their own home. We call on Irish people to make an effort to make sure that homeless people have a shelter at night and get the support they need. We also need to make a difference globally. We have to respect that people around the world are coming to look for shelter and protection in our country because of war in their own countries. It is not that long ago that Irish people were emigrating to England or America. Let us not forget our past . Ireland and all the people who live within it should reach our helping hand to other countries in trouble, to aid them and bring them what they need. We deserve better facilities in the areas of health and education. In our hospitals it is not right that people must wait for hours on trollies. Doctors and nurses are under a lot of pressure. Large numbers of nurses and doctors are emigrating to England and other countries for better conditions. We call on you now to rise up and call on our govern-ment to do something about this. We also state that all people are entitled to a good education. We ask that all schools should have a gym and an Astroturf. This will bene-fit all pupils making them healthier and keeping them fit . I call on you, the nation of Ireland to look after our environment. We must look after our pets properly. We must take care of our new young farmers so they can continue to farm the land, maintain and increase their herds. We must make an effort to reduce car-bon dioxide and strive to make the country a cleaner, less polluted place to live in. We should have more cycle lanes on roads, to walk more instead of driving short distances. One small change can help the environment a lot . I call on you to shop in your local shops and support the local businesses so they may thrive. This will result in a better economy for us all . Buying local will help to look after the suppliers also, which will support local farmers and small businesses. This will lead to better food for the nation, thus a healthier nation. We believe that Ireland is entit led to the best . We don’t know what the future holds but we can shape it. We have good ideas for Ireland as a whole and we have respect for Ireland. Our hope for Ireland is that future generations will be able to follow their des-tiny and live in a peaceful, progressive and inclusive Ireland.
