  • SADAQAH JARIYAH For Muslims, the building of a mosque, or contributing towards it, is one of the most virtuous forms of

Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity) that Allah SWT has bestowed upon us. Sadaqah Jariyah will benefit the donor long after they have died. We pray that you will take up this

opportunity to invest in your Aakhira (the after life).

When a person dies, then his good deeds stop except for three: a Sadaqah Jariyah, a beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for that person.

    (Sahih Muslim)

Appeal to Build a New Mosque and Islamic Centre in York

  • INTRODUCTION York is a beautiful historic city, located two hundred miles north of London. Its ancient Roman walls surround the city which contains many iconic buildings such as the York Minster, Cliffords Tower and the Shambles. The early Muslims settled in York about 40 years ago. They began their worship in a house, but as the numbers grew, a Mosque and Islamic Centre was established in Bull Lane in 1982. York has two universities which attract many Muslims from all over the world. One of the beauties of the Muslim community in York is that it is comprised of many different nationalities praying as one jamaat. Our numbers have grown significantly over the last decade, and the current facilities for up to four hundred worshippers are insufficient. Plans have been approved by the York City Council for a purpose-built new Mosque and Islamic Centre on the existing site. This new facility is designed to enhance our activities and to enable greater interaction with the local host community. An interfaith room, an exhibition area of religious art and library will be incorporated into this facility. The facility will allow non-Muslims and other religious communities to visit the mosque to gain a better understanding of Islam. The Mosque has a great reputation of working with the young generation. The Imam makes regular visits to local schools to enlighten the pupils on the basics of Islam. The new Mosque and Islamic Centre will also provide ongoing facilities for mothers, young children and ladies study circles. The childrens school and adult learning classes will be enhanced. The mosque holds annual events and invites the local community including non-Muslims to these events so that the true spirit of Islam can be disseminated. We look forward to continuing our work towards promoting Islam as a peaceful, tolerant and inspirational religion for future generations.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We acknowledge the hard work and support of all brothers and sisters, Muslim and non-Muslim, present and deceased, who have helped in bringing about continued development of the Mosque and Islamic Centre and towards forming a cohesive community in York. For your salams, duas, efforts and contributions, may Allah SWT reward you all through Sadaqah Jariyah, Ameen.

  • The Prophet (PBUH) said:

Whoever builds a house for Allah, Allah will build for him likewise in Paradise (Sahh al Bukhari and Sahh Muslim)

    1.5 M target

    195,000 raised

Our success so far A total of 1.5 million is required for completion of the building project. Fund raising is well underway, and over 195,000 has been raised so far at the time of printing. We are therefore reaching out to our Muslim and non-Muslim brothers and sisters, supporters and friends both nationally and internationally to help us achieve our target.

Allah SWT in His infinite wisdom places each and every one of us in different circumstances in order to see which of us have the best actions and he will reward us for our intentions. The lesson from this is not how much we donate in monetary terms or effort, but how much personal sacrifice we make from what has been given to us.

Our appeal for support The Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

Those who spend their wealth (in Allahs cause) by night and by day, in secret and in

public, they shall have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.

(Surah: Al-Baqarah Verse 274The Noble Quran)

  • ENGAGING WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

York Mosque and Islamic Centre has always embraced an open door policy. The local Muslim community regularly engages with the non-Muslim community in a range of open days, interfaith discussions and celebrations. We enjoy and value the support from all members of Yorks diverse community and organisations such as the police, council leaders, schools, scout groups and organisations keen to learn about the true values and principles of Islam.

  • Dear Abid, At the York Inter Faith Group meeting last night it was announced that York City Council has agreed to your plans to build a new Mosque in Bull Lane. It was with great delight that we heard the news and the members of the meeting asked me to write and say how pleased we are that a new Mosque is to be built in York. Please convey our congratulations to the leaders and members of the York Mosque and Islamic Centre on securing permission for the scheme to go ahead. We wish you every success and look forward to the day when the new Mosque is opened. It will be good to see the plans and hear of your work when some of us visit the Mosque during Inter Faith Week in November. Best wishes. Yours sincerely, David. • To whom it may concern, Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, The University of York Islamic Society aims to serve the spiritual, social and welfare needs of the Muslim students at the University of York, and to foster unity and understanding within the community regardless of beliefs and backgrounds. To this end, we have found the continuing support of York Mosque over previous years invaluable. In the past, York Mosque has helped the Society reach beyond the student populace by promoting us and our events locally, and many occasions the Imam of the mosque Sheikh Abid has contributed to our events in the form of speeches and Quran recitations. Our events are open to all and, with the help of York Mosque, regularly attract a wide range of attendees of all religions, races, genders and beliefs. Likewise, many Muslim students on campus attend and benefit greatly from events held at the the mosque. In this way, the Society has come to serve the wider community at York, and the mosque has become an integral part of the campus environment for Muslim students. The mosque provides a social and spiritual space for students all year round, and is especially valuable to international and graduate students outside of term times. Muslim students at York are delighted to learn that plans for a new mosque have been ap-proved. The Society would like to extend its deepest gratitude to York Mosque for their en-during efforts, and we look forward to maintaining our partnership over the coming years.
