Trainer Charlie Appleby believes
that his champion sprinter Blue
Point will be highly sought after
by Australian breeders, labelling
the bay as the potential second coming of his
super sire Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) as the
champion sprinter prepares to stand his first
season at stud in Victoria later this year.
Four-time Group 1 winner Blue Point,
who ended his career by emulating Choisir’s
(Danehill Dancer) historic sprinting double
at Royal Ascot by taking the King’s Stand
Stakes (Gr 1, 5f ) and the Diamond Jubilee
Stakes (Gr 1, 6f ) last year, will stand at
Darley’s Northwood Park farm in Seymour
at a fee of $44,000 (inc GST). He has already
served one book at the operation’s Kildangan
Stud in Ireland. Continued on page 2>>

“If you wanted to have a carbon
copy of a Shamardal, he is the closest you’re ever going to get to it at the
moment,” Appleby told ANZ Bloodstock News from his Newmarket base.
“We’ve been very lucky to have a lot of Shamardals go through our system.
Like any good stallion, he does stamp his stock.
“We were very lucky at the back end of last year, we got to see
Shamardal and Blue Point both opposite one another in the stallion boxes
at Kildangan and it certainly was a
mini me or a younger Shamardal,
basically. Obviously, on the
passing of Shamardal, I don’t think
there’s any better horse out there
that can hopefully fill his boots.”
Shamardal died last month
at Kildangan Stud at the age of 18,
having begun his stallion career
in the Hunter Valley in 2005 after
being retired mid-season in Europe.
A winner of four Group 1 features,
including the Prix du Jockey Club
(Gr 1, 2100m), he served five
seasons in Australia in addition to
his 14 seasons at Kildangan.
To date, Shamardal has produced 146 individual stakes winners
worldwide, including 25 Group 1 winners, with Able Friend, Captain
Sonador, Delectation, Faint Perfume and Maybe Discreet his Australian-
bred Group 1 winners. Others of note include Lope De Vega, the sire of
Australian feature victors Santa Ana Lane, Gytrash and Vega Magic; Hong
Kong enigma Pakistan Star, and Appleby’s own hugely exciting prospect
Pinatubo.

Blue Point is one of only two sons
of Shamardal confirmed to be standing in Australia for the upcoming
breeding season, with Swettenham Stud’s Puissance De Lune the other.
Yarradale Stud’s Gingerbread Man and Crackerjack King for Wyndholm
Park are others who are likely to be confirmed for the 2020 season.
Appleby is busily preparing for the return of British racing next month
with a team that includes last season’s champion two-year-old Pinatubo
(Shamardal) and 2018 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Cross
Counter (Teofilo), among a raft of potential stars. However, it is clear that
Blue Point is a horse close to his
heart, despite the fact it has been
almost a year since the galloper
walked out of his Newmarket
stables.
“For me, his consistency was
pretty much second-to-none,”
Appleby said. “Breaking his
maiden on his first start and going
on throughout that first season as a
two-year-old and winning a Group
2 and being placed in two Group
1s subsequently. His hallmark is
his consistency throughout his
career, from two to
five. Bar his maiden
and his second start, a
novice which he won
by 11 lengths with
James McDonald up
that day, he’s only ever
campaigned at Group
level.”
A sign of that
consistency is the fact that Blue Point only missed the top four twice in
his career. He finished last of nine in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1,
1200m) in Hong Kong in 2018, with circumstances firmly against him
throughout, while later that year he finished midfield as favourite in the
July Cup (Gr 1, 6f), with the colt appearing to travel too keenly over the
undulating Newmarket July course.
In addition to his four Group 1 wins, he was placed at Group 1 level
four times, while he also won two Group 2 events and three Group 3s.
While he broke through at Group 1 level as a four-year-old, taking the
King’s Stand Stakes for the first time, it was his five-year-old season where
he came of age. He won three races in Dubai, including the Al Quoz Sprint
(Gr 1, 5f) on Dubai World Cup night, before he closed out his career with
that famous Royal Ascot double.

“We were
lucky enough with him that Harry Angel retired
the year before and that allowed us to keep him
in training that extra year,” Appleby said. “As we
all know, nowadays, we don’t get to see these
horses race up until their five-year-old year.
He was one of the few that had come through
the system that was still here at the age of five
and therefore it allowed us to see him as the
finished article.
“His final start for us was quite something,
achieving the Group 1 double at Royal Ascot in
the King’s Stand and the Diamond Jubilee. I’m
never going to be able to get away from that as
the ultimate pinnacle of his career.
“In Australia, you can back horses up
quicker and you see it quite regularly at the
top level, horses backing up quite quickly. We
wouldn’t see it very often here. Our style of racing is different and our
tracks can be quite testing. So for it to be achieved, especially at Group 1
level, I’m grateful we were able to witness that.”
Appleby has become something of a revered figure in Australian
racing in recent years due to his frequent raids of the features down under.
The Brit has already walked away with many of the best staying contests in
Melbourne and Sydney, in addition to some of the world’s biggest races; it
is sometimes hard to remember that he has only been one of Godolphin’s
two primary UK trainers since mid-2013.
The 44-year-old, though, is excited by the prospect of having influence
in Australia in another way, by producing a potential top stallion that, on
paper, looks well-suited to the Australian market.
“I felt a bit old there the other day walking around the yard because I
had trained quite a few of the mares that now have their foals in training
with us,” he said. “And now, thankfully, we’re playing a part in the stallion
industry as well! It’s what we strive to achieve as trainers: when you’re
on the level that we are hopefully competing at, the aim is to produce
stallions and hopefully good race mares too, and then you hope to see
their progeny go on and achieve it on the race track.
“It’s exciting to produce a stallion but it’s more exciting to hope that
you’ve produced a good one. As we know, there are plenty of stallions out
there but to have that horse that is going to potentially shape racing and
keep it to a very high standard, it’s what we hope Blue Point is going to
achieve.
“Personally, I think he’s going to go down well because he’s just a
horse that has an abundance of natural pace. He’s a strong individual,
short-coupled, a proper sprinter and I think he’s going to tick a lot of boxes
for the Australian market.”
While Blue Point was by a Darley stallion in Shamardal, he was bred
and raised by Oak Lodge and Springfield House Stud in Kildare. Offered
at the 2014 Tattersalls December Foal Sale, he was purchased by Ebor
Bloodstock for 110,000 gns (AUD$216,000). He was then pinhooked in
Book 1 of the 2015 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, purchased for 200,000
gns (AUD$392,000) by John Ferguson Bloodstock on behalf of Godolphin.
Appleby recalls: “He was one of the sharper yearlings when he came
to us. I was fortunate enough to be off at the sales when he was purchased,
as it happens. So I saw him go through the sales ring. He was a likeable
individual and that’s why we went ahead and purchased him.
“When he came into the yard, he was a very forward-going yearling
and then obviously, when he turned two, he found everything naturally
very easy to do. He was one of the first two-year-olds that William Buick
would have jumped on at home and he liked him right from the get-go, he
said that he had so much natural pace. He then started his career in the
June of his two-year-old career and went on from there.
“He was a natural athlete, from the word go. Willie Ryan (former Derby
winning jockey) used to ride him on a daily basis throughout his two-year-
old and three-year-old career and he said that he’s one of the quickest he’s
sat on; he rode so many good horses through the years as a jockey, mainly
riding for Henry Cecil, so that means something.”
Appleby has had plenty of success with headline horses like Hawkbill
(Kitten’s Joy), Wild Illusion (Dubawi), Masar (New Approach), Blair
House (Pivotal) and Jungle Cat (Iffraaj) as well as current stable stars like
Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), Old Persian (Dubawi), Barney Roy (Excelebration),
Cross Counter and Pinatubo. However, he places Blue Point at the top of
the pecking order.
“I’ve been asked that a few times now and I think he’s probably
number one,” Appleby said. “We’ve been very lucky in the horses we’ve
had on hand in my career as a trainer, but I think he is that top horse. He
was one of those horses that excited you in the mornings; you’re excited
to watch him work, you’re excited to see him as an individual and watch
him gallop. He was always such an impressive galloper, very honest and
genuine and always wanted to please.
“The thing about him is that he did it in the afternoons as well. We’ve
all been around horses long enough to have seen plenty of good horses
in the mornings but they just don’t seem to bring it to the table in the
afternoons. He did it AM and PM, he was out there to please you.”

Nine for Spill The BeansLate Aquis Farm stallion Spill The Beans
(Snitzel) extended his lead at the top of the
first season sires by winners list when Isis
Brumby (2 g ex Overdel by Bel Esprit) defeated
the older horses at Bundaberg yesterday.
Sent out as an odds-on favourite, Isis Brumby
pulled clear for a three and three-quarter
length success over Miss Taylor (Drumbeats)
with Marcheky Boy (Tycoon Ruler) third,
almost five lengths away. Bred and raced by
Leo Ricciardi’s Isis Park Thoroughbreds, Isis
Brumby has now had two starts for a win and
a second.
Perth Winter Thoroughbred Sale forced onlineEntries have opened for the 2020 Perth Winter
Thoroughbred Sale, which will be conducted
online via the new Magic Millions Online
sales portal. Bidding will be conducted from
June 24 until June 26, with the sale open to
all thoroughbreds - weanlings, yearlings,
racehorses and breeding stock will all be
accepted. "We have made the decision to
conduct this annual sale online this year to
offer both vendors and buyers certainty,"
Magic Millions WA Manager David Houston
reported."This is the most effective way of
trading horses here in Western Australia before
the start of the breeding season, taking into
account the current restrictions." To facilitate
vendors being able to promote their lots to a
large online audience, the entry fee of $440 (inc
GST) for the auction will include provision for a
photo and video to be professionally produced
by a Magic Millions-appointed photographer
and videographer.
Champagne Cuddlesadded to Magic Millions National SaleThe Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale
has received another star entry with Champagne
Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt) set to go through
the sales ring. Four-time Group 1 placegetter
Champagne Cuddles was retired after suffering a
career-ending injury in the Magic Millions Sprint
(1200m) at the Gold Coast in January. The Bjorn
Baker-trained mare won four of her 26 starts,
including the Breeders’ Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) and
Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m), and earned
$1.46 million in prize-money. Champagne
Cuddles joins Group 1 winners Viddora (I Am
Invincible) and Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock) as
headline lots for the National Sale in late July.
Victorem set for StradbrokeJenny Graham is targeting the Stradbroke
Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) with Kosciusko
(1200m) runner-up Victorem (I Am Invincible)
after he passed a mandatory barrier trial test
yesterday. The dual stakes winner bucked
shortly after leaving the stalls in the BRC Sprint
(Gr 3, 1200m), finishing at the tail of the field
of ten. The five-year-old will now press on to
the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on Saturday
before a tilt at the Stradbroke for which he
has been allocated 52.5 kilograms. “All being
well that is the way we will go," Graham said.
"It looks like we should get a Stradbroke start
even if a couple win exempt races in the next
fortnight. Victorem is going well and it was just
unfortunate what happened in the BRC Sprint."
Two for Moody with MatamataPeter Moody recorded his second winner
since his comeback to the training ranks when
Matamata (Savabeel) scored at Moe. The trainer
of Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) restarted his training
career earlier this month in on-course stables at
Pakenham after spending four years away from
training. Moody’s first runner back, Shepard
(Sea The Moon), won at Ballarat on May 10 while
Matamata was just his third runner since his return.
Like Shepard, Matamata was ridden by Luke Nolen
in the Nextra Moe Maiden Plate (1600m). The pair
were best remembered for their association with
Black Caviar, who was unbeaten in 25 starts with
Nolen in the saddle for 22 of those occasions.
Moody stepped away from training in 2016 after he
was suspended for six months as a result of Lidari
(Acclamation) returning a cobalt reading above
the permitted level, following his second place in
the 2014 Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
Melham to plead not guiltyJockey Ben Melham will plead not guilty to
betting charges against him and his partner
Karlie Dales following a directions hearing at
the Victorian Racing Tribunal. Melham was
issued with seven charges by Racing Victoria
last month into alleged betting activities over a
six-month period, which included giving false
or misleading evidence during an interview.
Many of Melham’s bets were allegedly made
through the account of Dales, a registered
owner, who was also charged with giving false
or misleading information to stewards. The VRT
heard yesterday that Melham and Dales would
submit an outline of evidence by June 30. A
second directions will then be held on July 14
with a date for the full hearing expected to be
finalised that day. It is expected eight witnesses
will give evidence, with the hearing likely to be
held in the County Court and last up to three
days. Melham continues to ride and currently
sits fifth on the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership
with 38 winners this season.

ATC to honourCaryl Williamson
Three-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey
Glen Boss says it will be an honour if he can win
the Vale Caryl Williamson Handicap (1400m)
at Randwick aboard Jazette. The Australian
Turf Club is honouring Australian Associated
Press turf editor Caryl Williamson, who died
last week, by naming a race after her today.
Williamson, originally from New Zealand,
was the first female racing editor for a major
Australian media organisation, spending 24
years at the helm. “I was saying something to
the lads that we knew Caryl at the races but
didn’t know much about her personal life and a
lot of people were like that,” Boss said. “She was
very quiet, humble and always pleasant.” Boss
remembers walking from a recent Randwick
meeting with Williamson, discussing the day’s
racing. “We were having a good little chat and
she was as smart as a whip as always,” Boss
said. “She knew her stuff. We could give her a
comment and knew it would be taken the right
way or knew what we were talking about.”
Jockeys in demandfor StradbrokeTrainers are scrambling to secure jockeys
for the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m)
because of coronavirus restrictions on travel.
The weights for the Stradbroke were released
on Monday, with only five horses allotted a
weight of more than 54 kilograms, the usual
minimum in Queensland. The minimum for
the Stradbroke, however, is 49.5 kilograms,
meaning the vast majority of the runners will
be competing off weights from 51 kilograms to
53 kilograms. Due to restrictions, it is likely that
only jockeys based in southern Queensland
will be able to ride in the Stradbroke. The
issue is that there are only a limited number of
jockeys and apprentices who can ride under 54
kilograms. A Racing Queensland spokesman
says the current State Border Directions mean
that a person who arrives in Queensland from
another state or territory of Australia will not
be allowed to enter Queensland, unless they
receive a special exemption. If successful, they
would need to undertake a mandatory 14-day
self-isolation period.
Rodd looking forward to being back in the saddleJockey Michael Rodd is eager to get back in the
saddle for his racing return at Flemington. The
2007 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey exited
quarantine on Sunday following two weeks in
isolation after returning from Singapore. Rodd
spent five years in Singapore but with racing
there in shutdown due to the coronavirus
pandemic, he joined fellow jockeys Daniel
Moor and Patrick Moloney in returning to
Melbourne. After two Covid-19 tests Rodd has
been cleared by Racing Victoria to resume
racing at Flemington on Saturday and the
jockey had his first sit on a horse in trackwork
in over six weeks yesterday morning. “It was
awesome to get back out there,” Rodd said. “I
was a little bit wobbly but I settled into it after a
few and I’m sure I’m going to be a little bit sore
tomorrow. But I did a lot of work in the hotel
room and it really has shown and I’m happy
where I am at.”
Kinane settling wellin BrisbaneThe highly promising Kinane (Reliable Man)
takes centre stage this week when making his
Brisbane debut in the Gunsynd Classic (Gr 3,
1800m) at Eagle Farm. Trainer Chris Waller
decided to bypass the South Australian Derby
(Gr 1, 2500m) to instead concentrate on two
runs in Queensland this winter. Waller said on
Twitter that Kinane, who was subject to multi-
million dollar offers from Hong Kong after
his latest win in the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3,
2000m) at Randwick, had taken to his new
surroundings in Brisbane. Stable representative
Paul Shailer reported the gelding was ‘jumping
out of his skin’ after his work at the Gold Coast
yesterday.
Thornton reflects on successful SA stint
Damien Thornton is embracing the positives to
come out of his current 14-day quarantine period
on his return to Melbourne after a successful
campaign at the Adelaide carnival where he
scored his first Group 1 win. The jockey is able
to wind down and reflect on his first elite level
win aboard Toffee Tongue (Tavistock) in the
Schweppes Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) and his growing
relationships with some leading stables. “I’ve had
a bit of Uber Eats and had a couple of beers, which
I am allowed to now, but I won’t be silly about it
and getting up to 58 (kilograms) or 59 or anything
like that,” Thornton told Racing.com. “It’ll be like
being normal and having breakfast and dinner
every day. It’s a nice change. I won’t worry about
my weight for a week and then work on it a bit in
the second week. I can sit back now and enjoy
things for a couple of weeks.”
Moroney eyeing up Everest for TofaneMichael Moroney may aim All Aged Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m) winner Tofane (Ocean Park) towards a
tilt at The Everest (1200m), the world’s richest turf
race, in the spring. “We are just waiting for them to
confirm prize-money for The Everest,” Moroney
told Racing.com. “We might attack that, which
does change a lot what you do in the spring. On
the fresh side, she would be competitive in an
Everest and from then on she probably wants
to go up to a mile. We were even contemplating
that if there wasn’t an Everest, then we could give
her a prep in the lead-up to the Cox Plate (Gr 1,
2040m).” Tofane has won five of her 14 starts,
including the Northwood Plume Stakes (Gr 3,
1200m), Begonia Belle Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and
the All Aged Stakes. “For her to do what she did
(in the All Aged Stakes) puts her in the top drawer.
She could end up as good a mare as I have trained
I think,” said Moroney.

Holder drivenby near missesTriple Group 1-winning jockey Jason Holder
is driven by his narrow defeats in both the
South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and The
Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) during the South
Australian carnival, which saw him ride seven
Group or Listed winners across the carnival.
“Before the carnival, if I had six rides in normal
races in Adelaide or one in a Group race in
Melbourne, I’d stay in Adelaide and ride for
my usual trainers and connections - I won’t be
doing that anymore,” Holder told Racing.com.
“You can’t ride forever, you need to make the
most of opportunities when they come your
way and I’m going to start putting my name
in the ring for every Group 1 opportunity I
believe I can get.” Holder’s most recent Group
1 win came in 1997, taking the South Australian
Derby on Markham (Salieri), and although the
pain of two narrow defeats was hard to stomach,
Holder soon moved on: “I watched the replays
over and over but realised there was no point as
the results won’t change.”
Racing Australia appoint National Equine Welfare and Traceability ExecutiveRacing Australia has appointed Karen Day as
the organisation’s first National Equine Welfare
and Traceability Executive as the organisation
continues to enhance its commitment to
Thoroughbred welfare and traceability. Day’s
previous role was as Equine Welfare Manager for
Racing NSW, a role which she held from 2016 to
early 2019. A statement by Racing Australia said:
“Karen will bring over 25 years of thoroughbred
experience and more than 20 years working
in Media, Publishing and Marketing where
she has developed a multi-disciplined skill
set covering business leadership, marketing,
consumer and customer data management,
sales and operations.” Racing Australia’s
Operations Chief Executive Officer Myles
Foreman added: “The appointment of Karen as
the first National Equine Welfare & Traceability
Executive for Racing Australia
is an important step in the
ongoing commitment to the
welfare and traceability of
the thoroughbred.”

Melbourne Cup a possibility for Roger ThatTauranga horseman Antony Fuller has Auckland
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Roger That (Shinko
King) back ticking over but he isn’t getting ahead
of himself as he looks to place his stable star this
spring. The farmer turned horse trainer prepares
the rising eight-year-old from his Bay Of Plenty
property. “We’re just working him quietly and not
doing anything too serious until we know where
we are going. He is ticking over and he seems fine,”
Fuller said. “The draft calendar for next season is
still being worked through, so until we know the
type of races and distances we can’t plan too far
ahead.” In a unique year, where the magnitude of
international competition is difficult to forecast,
Fuller said a tilt at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
could be possible for the veteran stayer: “We are
definitely giving it serious consideration, but it is
the travel restrictions for us that are the question
mark at the moment, and we want to assess that
the horse is going well enough here first too.”
White Robe Lodge announce 2020 feesOtago-based White Robe Lodge has
announced their 2020 service fees, with Raise
The Flag (Sadler’s Wells) leading the roster at
NZ$6,000 (plus GST), unchanged from 2019,
despite a standout season which included
a breakthrough Group 1 win for Etah James

ASIA
Oaks fancy out to honour late CertainDes Ailes (Deep Impact), the early second
favourite for the Yushun Himba (Gr 1, 2400m),
the Japanese Oaks, will be seeking to represent
her late dam, dual French Classic winner Avenir
Certain (Le Havre), when she steps out in Sunday’s
feature. Avenir Certain died last April in Japan, but
her death was only reported this week through
the Japanese Studbook. She was unbeaten in her
first six starts for Jean-Claude Rouget, including
the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m), the
French 1,000 Guineas, and the Prix de Diane (Gr
1, 2100m), the French Oaks. She was exported to
Japan in 2016, producing two foals, both by Deep
Impact. Des Ailes will be ridden by Australian
jockey Damian Lane.
Almond Eye decision pendingA decision is looming about Almond Eye’s
(Lord Kanaloa) next start after she blitzed her
rivals at her seasonal return in the Victoria
Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) last weekend. Trainer Sakae
Kunieda is eyeing off the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1,
1600m) over the same course and distance as
the Victoria Mile, except against the males; it
was a race in which she finished third last year.
Last year’s winner Indy Champ (Stay Gold) is
likely to line up once again, along with recent
Sydney visitor Danon Premium (Deep Impact),
who finished second to Addeybb (Pivotal) in
the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at
Randwick at his most recent start. The race may
also feature last year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes
runner-up Kluger (King Kamehameha).
Ting’s Star shoots for Amazing five at the ValleyHappy Valley specialist Amazing Star (Darci
Brahma) is shooting for his fifth win at the city
circuit this season when he faces off against
talented rivals in the Class 2 Ho Chung River
Handicap (1200m) tonight. The Jimmy Ting
trainee has relished racing around the Valley’s
tight turns and has enjoyed a rapid rise, with
four wins from five starts this season having
taken his rating to a career-high mark of 100. A
win tonight would put the New Zealand-bred
gelding in line for a tilt at Group races next term
but three-time champion jockey Zac Purton
is taking it one step at a time. “I think he’s
starting to reach his ceiling but he’s got a liking
for Happy Valley and if he can break cleanly to
have himself right up there, then hopefully he
can continue on with what he’s been doing,” the
Australian said.

Vale Forty Niner
Four-time Grade 1 winner and prominent
international sire Forty Niner (Mr Prospector)
died from old age on Monday, the Japan
Bloodhorse Breeders Association (JBBA)
announced on Twitter. Forty Niner had turned
35 a week earlier. Forty Niner won the Futurity
Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) and the Champagne Stakes
(Gr 1, 8f) among five wins at two in 1987,
before adding the Haskell Invitational (Gr 1,
9f) and the Travers Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) at three.
He was also among the favourites for the 1988
Kentucky Derby, finishing second by a neck
to the filly Winning Colors (Caro). At stud,
first at Kentucky’s Claiborne Farm and then at
Shizunai Stallion Station in Japan, he produced
56 stakes winners, including six Grade 1
winners. His sons have succeeded at stud as
well, most notably Distorted Humor. "We are
truly saddened to lose him and are grateful for
all the support from his fans over the years,"
said JBBA stallion affairs manager Shigeki Yusa.
Godolphin Flying Start cohort announcedIreland-based Australian Angus Robertson and
Sydney-based duo, Irishman Donncha McCarthy
and Frenchwoman Marine Moussa, were
among 12 trainees announced last night for the
Godolphin Flying Start program, beginning later
this year. The prestigious two-year Thoroughbred
Industry Management and Leadership
Programme facilitates trainees to learn and
experience management operations and
leadership in the global thoroughbred industry
with phases in Ireland, the UK, the USA, Australia
and Dubai. Joining Robertson, McCarthy and
Moussa are George Broughton and Thomas
Lyon-Smith from the UK, Samantha Bussanich,
Devon Dougherty and Erin McLaughlin from
the US, Solène Hudbert, also from France, and
three other Irish trainees - Brigitte Murphy, Tom
Murphy and David Skelly.
O’Brien still determining Classic teamAidan O’Brien has admitted to plans at
Ballydoyle being up in the air with regards to
the Classics, but revealed Wichita (No Nay
Never) and Arizona (No Nay Never) remain
the most likely colts to take on last season’s
outstanding juvenile Pinatubo (Shamardal) in
the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket on
June 6. The most successful trainer in the race's
history, O'Brien has won the 2,000 Guineas ten
times, including four of the past five runnings,
but the close proximity of Royal Ascot to the
first Classic of the season will have a huge
bearing on what the master trainer runs in the
race this year. “The two main horses who were
going to Newmarket originally were Wichita
and Arizona, that was the original plan,”
O’Brien said. "We thought it would be possible
to do all three races with them – the Guineas at
Newmarket, the Irish Guineas and then the St
James's Palace, but that's obviously not the case
now. I'd imagine the horses will go either of two
ways between the Irish and English Guineas
with the view that some of the Newmarket
horses would have a chance of running at Royal
Ascot. That's it in a nutshell really.”

The finalists for the 2020 Australian
Stud and Stable Staff Awards,
celebrating the unsung heroes
who dedicate their lives to
Australia’s racing and breeding industries, were
announced last night.
Two finalists were named for each of the
seven categories - Leadership, Horsemanship,
the Australian Turf Club Dedication to Racing,
the Magic Millions Dedication to Breeding,
the Melbourne Racing Club Foundation
Administration and Ancillary, Newcomer and
Thoroughbred Care and Welfare.
The named finalists occupy positions that
encompass everything from mucking out
stables, to administration, to education, riding,
delivering foals, rehoming and retraining ex-
racehorses and every other facet of two of the
biggest and most diverse industries in the
country.
The Australian Stud and Stable Staff
Awards, which will be announced during a
virtual awards ceremony on June 17, could
arguably not be better-timed. It is a time in
which the entire workforce in both the breeding
and racing industries deserves recognition for
being able to operate despite the devastating
Covid-19 pandemic.
Among the nominees are people like
Mandy Radecker, whose success as a jockey has
been followed by a career curing problemed
racehorses of their bad habits and passing on
her knowledge.
Radecker’s nomination in the
Horsemanship category is backed by the simple
endorsement from her boss, Queensland
trainer Michael Lakey: “Mandy has dedicated
her life to the thoroughbred horse.”
Two of this year’s finalists, Kelly Colledge
in the Newcomer category, and Sarah Moran
in the Administration and Ancillary category,
both demonstrated great resourcefulness in
difficult circumstances.
The relatively inexperienced Colledge took
over the running of Grafton trainer Brenden

Mackay’s stable when he was diagnosed with a
brain tumour.
As Mackay said: “Kelly saved my stable and
is keeping my dream alive. She has a ‘next-level’
work ethic.”
Similarly, Moran, who worked in the office
of Melbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths, stepped
up when her boss was battling a brain aneurysm
during 2019.
“I don’t know how we would have coped if
Sarah hadn’t taken on a variety of extra roles.
She was instrumental in keeping our business
afloat,” Griffiths said.
Others, like Godolphin’s Simon Johnson,
the Assistant Stud Manager at Woodlands
Stud and a finalist in the Leadership Award,
is commended as “exactly the person these
awards were created for”.
Johnson, a highly accomplished horseman
and dedicated educator, sees his role as a broad
one.
“We have a duty to give everyone who
comes into the industry and who shows a
willingness to learn the opportunity to advance
themselves,” Johnson said.
“These Awards recognise not so much the
people like me, but all of those who give so
much to ensure their farms and the industry
are successful.”
In the Dedication to Racing category,
Brett “Lofty” Killion has worked for some of
Australia’s finest trainers over the past 25 years
and is now the Brisbane foreman for Chris
Waller.
Renowned as one of the few in the game
who would arrive at Randwick before his first
boss, Gai Waterhouse, Killion is described by
his nominator as “honest, hard-working and
ever-loyal”.
“Lofty has learned from people like Gai
and her father’s legendary foreman ‘Spider’
Barker. He’s been influenced by a man with
the outstanding horsemanship skills and eye of
John Thompson and by the methodical search
for perfection of Chris Waller,” his nominator,
Reg Fleming said. “He’s taken something from
all of them.”
The Stud and Stable Staff Awards are
supported by Godolphin worldwide and in
Australia are staged by Thoroughbred Breeders
Australia and Racing Australia with sponsorship
from the Melbourne Racing Club Foundation,
the Australian Turf Club and Magic Millions.
TBA Chief Executive Tom Reilly said
the 2020 Awards are made against a testing
background that has demonstrated more
clearly than ever the value of those who keep
the thoroughbred racing and breeding industry
at their world-leading level.
“Australia was one of the few racing
jurisdictions in the world where racing
continued throughout the Covid-19
pandemic, and one of the reasons for that
was the dedication and discipline of the entire

workforce,” Reilly said. “The Stud and Stable
Staff Awards again highlights the quality of
those who work behind the front line in the
most vital roles.”
MRC Foundation chief operating officer
Warren Horton said his organisation was
proud to again sponsor the Administration and
Ancillary Award.
“The work these individuals perform
behind the scenes is truly remarkable and they
are the true unsung heroes of our industry.
Good luck to all the nominees,” Horton said.
The winner in each category, other than
the Newcomer, receives $10,000 and a trophy
with a further $3,000 to share among workplace
colleagues. The winner in the Newcomer
category receives $5,000.
A further $5,000 and a trophy is awarded
for Thoroughbred Excellence to the category
winner (except Newcomer and Care and
Welfare) judged to have made an exceptional
and significant contribution throughout the
year.

One of Australia’s most prolific
broodmares, Scandinavia
(Snippets), has died at the age of
25, it was announced yesterday.
Scandinavia’s owner, breeder Rob Crabtree,
announced her death through Aushorse, with
the matriarch leaving behind a family that has
come to sit at the forefront of the Australian
racing and breeding industries.
“You never forget your first. I had a couple of
good horses before Scandinavia and a few since,
but in my opinion she’s changed the landscape
of Australian breeding: a ‘blue hen’ by any
definition,” Crabtree told Aushorse. “She’s a
Group winner in her own right, she produced
Group winners, her daughters have produced
Group winners and her granddaughters are
now producing Group winners.”
Crabtree purchased Scandinavia’s dam,
Song Of Norway (Vain), from David Hains in
1994 for $40,000, in foal to Snippets. Song Of
Norway was unraced and hardly had a pedigree
page littered with black type: her third foal
Russian Tea Room (Raise A Cup) had won the
Rancher Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield
in 1992 and her half-sister Song Of Kingston
(Bletchingly) had produced dual
Group 1 placegetter Muirfield Village
(Exit Five B), but it was still hardly an
inspiring pedigree on paper.
However, Crabtree saw something
in Song Of Norway and decided to
invest, with her Snippets filly arriving
in November, 1994.
“She (Song of Norway) had just the three
foals for me, but I put her in foal to Western
Symphony after Scandinavia was born and she
produced the Sydney stakes winner, Midnight
Sun,” Crabtree said.
“I decided to race Scandinavia in
partnership with John Sadler and he trained
her to win a Blue Diamond Prelude at two and
the Group 2 QTC Cup, but she was also Group
1-placed four times in the Salinger, Goodwood,
Lightning and Newmarket.
“Scandinavia was an even better racehorse
than her record suggests – she was beaten a
whisker in the Salinger behind 12-time stakes
winner, Flavour, and was less than a head away
when third to an absolute flying machine,
General Nediym, in the Newmarket.”
While she was a terrific racehorse, she was
an even better broodmare. She produced 13
foals, with 10 making it to the racetrack. Eight
of them were winners; the two that didn’t win
have created black type families of their own.
Her first foal Danavia (Danehill) was city-
placed from four starts. She produced five
foals; among them was stakes winner Iconic
(Bel Esprit), as well as classy filly Sistonic (Bel
Esprit), who produced the four-time winner
Seatonic (Sebring). Another of her daughters,
Hypatia (Distant Music), has produced two
five-time winners in Bold Kingston (Your Song)
and Believing (Bel Esprit).
It was Scandinavia’s second foal, though,
that would really cement her legacy. Helsinge
(Desert Sun) was unraced and was sold at the
2005 Inglis Broodmare Sale for $115,000.
Helsinge produced eight foals, but none
could match her first: the almighty Black
Caviar (Bel Esprit), who won all 25 of her starts
- including 15 Group 1 wins - before retiring
to the breeding barn herself, where she has
produced two winners in Oscietra (Exceed And
Excel) and Prince Of Caviar (Sebring).
Helsinge’s second foal, the colt Moshe (Bel
Esprit), was a winner of three of his five starts,
also producing a stakes winner in Moshki. He
now stands at stud in Indonesia.
The third foal for Helsinge was another
colt right out of the box. All Too Hard (Casino
Prince) was a four-time Group 1 winner,
including in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1,
1600m), before retiring to Vinery Stud. He has
produced 16 stakes winners, most notably
Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) conqueror
Alligator Blood.
Among Helsinge’s other foals is Naturale
(Bel Esprit), who produced this season’s
Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) placegetter
Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon).

Having produced Danavia and Helsinge,
Scandinavia was finally able to produce
a Group 1 winner to avenge her narrow
defeats on the racetrack with her next foal
being Group 1 winner Magnus (Flying Spur).
Magnus raced in the Crabtree red and white
checks and performed admirably on the
world stage, hitting the placings in Group
1 races in Singapore and the UK as well as
on home soil. His crowning moment came
in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Randwick in
2007.
“I’d come so close to winning a Group
1 on too many occasions and Magnus had
finished second to Miss Andretti – in track
record time – in the Lightning Stakes, then
he ran third in the Oakleigh Plate,” Crabtree
said. “Winning a Group 1 was proving to
be fairly elusive, but then Magnus came
out and won the Galaxy in Sydney for Peter
Moody and Damien Oliver.
“I stood Magnus at Eliza Park (now Sun
Stud), which ironically, is the farm I owned
in the 90s, and from there he’s gone on
to produce four Group 1 winners,
including this year’s Futurity winner,
Streets of Avalon, and 40 other stakes
horses who between them have won
$46 million.”
Also among Scandinavia’s
progeny is Baltics (Fusaichi Pegasus),
the granddam of this season’s Blue
Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-
up Hanseatic (Street Boss); nine-time
winner Ibsen (Bel Esprit); Group 2
winners Wilander (Exceed And Excel) and
Scandiva (Fastnet Rock); Listed winner Arctic
Flight (Flying Spur); and Group 2 runner-up
Lionhearted (Fastnet Rock).
Scandinavia only has one of her foals still
racing - a three-year-old named Metro Warrior
(Fastnet Rock), currently in training with John
Moore in Hong Kong. As Viking Warrior, he was
a two-time winner in Victoria. He was her last
foal before she was retired from stud duties in
2018.
“What a phenomenal career and truly a
legend in her own lifetime,” Crabtree adds. “For
my wife, Sylvie, and I, Scandinavia is like one of
the family, just as she’s been for her carer, Fiona
Melling, who has looked after her from the start.
“Fittingly, Scandinavia is buried in the
way of champions: standing up and facing the
morning sun.”
Whether Metro Warrior lives up to his
pedigree or not, Scandinavia has already made
her mark - and will continue to do so in the
years to come.

Eligible employers will be able to receive
and pay the JobKeeper payments to various
employee categories, including, but not limited
to:
• Employees who were employed by you as employees as at March 1, 2020;
• Employees currently employed by you (including those stood down or re-hired);
• Employees who are full-time, part-time, or long-term casuals (to get the payment for
a casual employee, they must have been employed by you on a regular basis for longer
than 12 months as at March 1, 2020); and• Employees who are not in receipt of a
JobKeeper Payment from another employer.
• Special eligibility for horse business structures with no employeesPresuming the above eligibility conditions for employers and
employees are satisfied, note below how a “nominated” employee for the
following common business structures are eligible to receive JobKeeper.
• Sole traders
The proprietor will be eligible if they do not receive JobKeeper from
another source.Another reminder: for verification purposes, businesses without
employees, such as a sole trader:• will need to provide an ABN for their business;
• nominate an individual to receive the payment;
• provide that individual’s Tax File Number; and
• provide a declaration as to the recent business activity of that business.
Sole traders are easily the most common horse structures and, as
such, it is worth sharing that if you are also employed on a wage and
would like to receive JobKeeper as a sole trader, rather than through your
employer, you can nominate yourself as the “eligible business participant”
Carrazzo Consulting Pty Ltd | Chartered Accountants - www.carrazzo.com.au
under the business participation rules and give appropriate notice to the
ATO. In this scenario, your employer cannot nominate you for JobKeeper
payments.
• PartnershipsA single partner in a partnership can be nominated. This single
partner must not be receiving JobKeeper from another source.• Trusts
A single individual beneficiary of a trust can be nominated to receive
JobKeeper payments. This individual beneficiary must not be receiving
JobKeeper from another source. The beneficiaries of a trust are outlined and defined within its trust deed.
• CompaniesA single director or shareholder of a company can be nominated.
These businesses will also receive JobKeeper payments for their other
eligible employees. This single director must not be receiving JobKeeper from another
source.
These initiatives are a step forward, but
it is noted by accounting bodies, such as CPA
Australia, that they have limitations in ensuring
equitable access to JobKeeper within trust,
partnership, and company structures. They will
recommend to government that the ‘business
participant’ test be extended to all actively
engaged persons in trusts, partnerships and
companies. For more details on JobKeeper, please refer
to our recent release titled “JobKeeper subsidy
for businesses and employees” on the Carrazzo
blog at www.carrazzo.com.au.

Of all the recent government Covid-19 initiatives recently announced, it is generally thought that the JobKeeper payment for employers is only available to profitable horse businesses that have established employees. If you thought this was the case, read on, upon review of the recently announced JobKeeper legislation, I have some pleasant surprises for you.Below, I will work through the four common business structures and explain how it is possible for business owners that operate as sole traders or through trusts, partnerships and companies, to be eligible for JobKeeper even if their businesses are currently in losses and/or they aren’t being paid wages.

JobKeeper – positive updatecould benefit your horse business
JobKeeper payment – quick overviewA JobKeeper payment is a minimum payment ($1,500 per fortnight) the Government will pay to eligible businesses (defined below) to ensure they are able to keep their eligible employees (defined below) employed by them during this Covid-19 period. The first payment will be received by employers from the ATO in the
first week of May, 2020 and will be backdated to be payable from the scheme commencement of March 30, 2020. Payments under JobKeeper can be received up to September 27, 2020.• Eligible employers
All businesses who meet the turnover tests below can now register their interest with the ATO to receive the JobKeeper payment for their employees. Update to “Turnover tests” for employers All businesses (including sole traders) can now register their interest to
receive the JobKeeper payments for their employees (or themselves if sole traders) if they meet the various turnover tests. The most applicable test to the horse industry is that their turnover has been reduced by more than 30 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month).
Since our original release on JobKeeper a few weeks ago, the ATO has given more details as to how to apply the “turnover test”. This is a crucial consideration for employers and is noted below.
How to calculate a fall in turnover for the first fortnight starting 30 March 2020To work out your fall in turnover, you can compare either:• GST turnover for March, 2020 with GST turnover for March, 2019• projected GST turnover for April, 2020 with GST turnover for April, 2019• projected GST turnover for the quarter starting April 2020 with GST
turnover for the quarter starting April, 2019How you choose to project your fall in turnover is not dependent on whether you report a quarterly or monthly BAS, though you can do that if it is easier.
If you work out that you qualify for the JobKeeper payments for the first fortnight because your turnover has declined by the relevant amount, you remain eligible and do not need to keep testing turnover in following months. However, you will have ongoing monthly reporting requirements. More information will be provided soon. The ATO also has the discretion to set out alternative tests that can
establish your eligibility when turnover periods are not appropriately comparable (for example, if your business has been in operation less than a year). We will provide more information soon about alternative tests.

“The interest has been very good,
and probably better than we thought, and by design we held back on
announcing fees just because we needed to see where the market sat, see
what the appetite was and just get a feel for what the market is saying,” Cox
told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.
“We think we have got a relative idea on where it all sits, but those
three in particular have demanded a lot of interest at this early stage.”
While conscious of the prevailing market outlook caused by the global
pandemic, Cox said the deeds of Exceed And Excel demanded that the
rising 20-year-old’s service fee was put up from $88,000 in 2019 given his
recent achievements.
Buyers have also recognised Exceed And Excel’s consistent
performance as an elite sire, with a colt making $1.7 million at the Easter
sale last year and another son at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale fetching $1.8 million, the second highest-priced yearling
sold at auction in Australasia this year.
“He has got three Group 1-winning colts at the moment and two
recently retired, Microphone and Exceedance and for Bivouac, it is our
intention to race him on next season,” he said.
“Having said that, those horses are winning the proper races - the
right races - and it shows with what the horse is doing in the sale ring as
well. Exceed is a horse who can change your postcode, whether you are
racing one or if you have got one in the sale ring.
“When a horse has that sort of effect generally you expect that to be
reflected in his price and that is where we’ve moved him to.”
Darley has maintained the 2019 service fees of Victorian-based
stallions Street Boss (Street Cry) ($27,500) and Brazen Beau (I Am
Invincible) ($49,500), the leading second season sire by stakes winners
with five, in front of money-earning leader Rubick (Encosta De Lago)
(two) and Deep Field (Northern Meteor) (three).
The remainder of Darley’s stallion roster, including champion Lonhro
(Octagonal) ($66,000), Astern (Medagalia d’Oro) ($22,000), Epaulette
(Commands) ($22,000) and Harry Angel (Dark Angel) ($16,500), have all
had their service fees reduced.

“I think he’s
going to come as a little bit of a shock and a
surprise to the market that he is standing under
the Newgate banner, but he’s a horse we just felt
deserved his chance,” Slade told ANZ Bloodstock
News yesterday.
“Obviously, he raced in the Godolphin
colours and I think everyone’s first memory of the
horse is that he is that X-factor horse that was the
early favourite for the Golden Slipper. Everyone
was so excited after his debut to see where he’d
go and where he’d get to, but unfortunately, due
to injury, he was never able to fulfill the potential
that he had shown on debut.”
That debut was an electric five and a quarter
length victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) at
Rosehill in November, 2018. It was a win that saw
Tassort assume early favouritism for that season’s Golden Slipper Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m), with form analysts rating his performance through the
roof: The Rating Bureau’s Daniel O’Sullivan declared it a “Group 1 class”
performance that was “stamped
by a sharp turn of foot, terrific late
strength and fast overall time”,
placing him in rarefied company.
Unfortunately, the colt only
raced once more, when he was
sent out as an odds-on favourite
in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2,
1100m) at Rosehill. Slow from the
stalls, he settled near the rear in an
evenly-run race, making ground
late into second but unable to reel
in Time To Reign (Time For War).
“We had key indicators
through this horse’s career that
told us he was elite and just
never had the chance to show it,”
Slade said. “We are big on time ratings and data. Daniel O’Sullivan from
The Ratings Bureau gave this guy a 103 on debut when he won. He was
impressive to the eye that day but when the time data came back, it said,
listen, this is as impressive a two-year-old debut that we’ve seen since the
likes of Estijaab and Extreme Choice. To be honest, at the time, we thought
we had a colt to be really concerned about on the racetrack, wearing our
Newgate cap!
“Obviously we never got to see that ability but on the back of that
performance, that debut, James McDonald came out and said he was the
real deal and James Cummings was very much of the same opinion, he
had a very high opinion of the horse. Everyone that had something to do
with him plus the time data suggested he had the ability to be that real
elite performer.
Slade continued: “At the end of the day, for all of us, our key criteria
for any young stallion standing at Newgate is that elite race performance.
Horses don’t have to win their Group 1s, but if they showed elite
performance, they generally are your best chance of becoming an
important stallion.
“I just feel you only have to look at the general sires list to see that. They are
either proper, proper Group 1 horses, or they were horses who had that ability but
didn’t get to showcase their true potential.
