confirmed with an effortless barrier trial victory at the Gold Coast yesterday.

The brilliant filly, who is being backed by Aquis Farm to run in the $10,000,000 The Everest (1200m) on 14 October at Randwick, led throughout to win heat one for three-year-olds over 1000 metres for regular jockey Jeff Lloyd, the only barrier trial conducted on the Gold Coast course proper.

A winner of four of her five starts, Houtzen defeated stablemate Eptimum (Snitzel) by three and a half lengths in a time of 57.82 seconds, clocking 33.63 seconds for her last 600 metres.

“She wasn’t up against horses of her ability, but I don’t think she would have done much more than what she did anyway (if she was in an open grade heat),” Edmonds told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“She showed us that she wanted to compete and she was great in the trial.”

The Gold Coast-based trainer said Houtzen, whose only defeat came when fifth to She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on 18 March, that the filly had developed nicely during her spell at Segenhoe Stud in the Hunter Valley.

“She is a big, strong filly now and was always a bit more robust than the normal two-year-old, but now she is taller, roomier and has a bigger back end on her, she is the complete package,” he said.

“They did us a favour and put the trial on the course proper, which was great. She ran 57.82 and the sectional time was good as well.”

Edmonds said Houtzen would soon travel to Melbourne for her first up run in the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Moonee Valley on 9 September, where Craig Williams will ride the daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) instead of Lloyd, as the Gold Coast-based jockey cannot make the 50 kilogram handicap in the weight-for-age race.

“She will run at Moonee Valley on the ninth first up and will then head to the Moir Stakes or the Scarborough Stakes (for three-year-olds) at Moonee Valley on the Friday night (29 September),” he said.

“I am leaning towards the three-year-old race second up and then head to The Everest.”

Houtzen will be stabled at Caulfield during her Melbourne campaign and is unlikely to have another jump out before the McEwen Stakes.

“She will head to Melbourne next week sometime, acclimatise there, and then start off on 9 September,” he said.

Nieta Set For Spring Sprints Lightly raced sprinter Nieta (Nicconi) is ready to resume in the Concorde

Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick on 2 September after winning her second Randwick barrier trial this campaign impressively yesterday.

Trained by John Thompson, Nieta won heat 11 over 735 metres with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle, defeating the John Sargent-trained Colosseum King (Roman Emperor) by one and three quarter lengths.

Nieta has won six of her 12 starts and was given only two runs during the autumn with Thompson eyeing an extensive spring sprinting campaign with the five-year-old mare.

She won a Randwick 740 metre barrier trial by four and a quarter lengths on 8 August before again taking out a heat on her home track yesterday.

She ran 42.70 seconds for the shortcourse barrier trial on a Good 4 surface.“John was keen to capitalise on the many spring black type, short-

distance options, so was very mindful of giving the lightly raced mare just a couple of runs in the autumn,” Thompson’s racing manager Robyn Hartney told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“In her first trial she was naturally very fresh and, although she won by a margin, the time was slow. Today, she once again won easily doing it well within herself with a really slick time of 42.70 seconds.

“Brenton rode Nieta for the first time and he was extremely happy after the trial.”

Hartney said no firm plans for Nieta had been mapped out beyond her first up run in the Concorde Stakes.

“John will then make a decision whether to stay in Sydney for The Shorts or go to Melbourne where there are some nice short distance Group races available.”

Canberra trainer Matt Dale was also delighted with the soft hit out jockey Tye Angland gave The Everest-bound Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt), who ran three and a quarter lengths third to Nieta in the Randwick barrier trial.

Tuesday 22 August 2017 Nieta Set For Spring Sprints

Placed five times at Group One level, Fell Swoop has been chosen to represent Inglis in The Everest, with Dale to run the six-year-old third up in the $10,000,000 race.

‘’I don’t ask him to over trial, we idle through our work and that will top him off nicely and he’ll be ready to run first up,’’ Dale said yesterday.

‘’He has to clean up in the coat a bit which is understandable as we’ve had a very cold winter in Canberra but he’s well within himself and I’m happy with where his fitness is at.’’

Fell Swoop was runner-up to Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) in the 2016 T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at this third run back from a spell and third to the same horse in this year’s race last April.

“I’m looking at it in a similar way to the way to how we’ve targeted the T J Smith in previous years,’’ Dale said.

“It’s as good a blueprint as you can find and having him ready third up at Randwick over 1200 metres is the way I’m approaching it.

“At this stage everything is on track in line with that preparation.’’ Meanwhile, co-trainer Peter Snowden was pleased with yesterday’s

barrier trial performance of Redzel (Snitzel), who is set to resume in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) at Randwick on 16 September.

The Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) winner won heat three over 1045 metres at Randwick yesterday, defeating stablemate Russian Revolution (Snitzel) by half a length with the Pat Webster-trained Happy Clapper (Teofilo) another four lengths back in third place.

The Everest-bound Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained English (Encosta De Lago) finished fourth in her first barrier trial this preparation under Blake Shinn.

Kerrin McEvoy partnered Redzel in yesterday’s barrier trial having won the Hall Mark Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on the five-year-old gelding at Randwick last April, while Hugh Bowman rode Russian Revolution.

“He’s working really well and I couldn’t be happier with how he is right now,” Snowden said of Redzel.

“His trial today was good and it’s brought him right up to the mark for a first start which will most likely be The Shorts here at Randwick.”

A winner of The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) in the autumn at Rosehill, Russian Revolution is likely to have his first up run in the McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Snowden said Redzel and Russian Revolution could both be in line for a berth in The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on 14 October if their

form warranted slot holders negotiating a deal with the horses’ respective owners.

“The Everest is a lucrative concept and it would be fantastic to be part of the first running of the race. It is exciting for the owners as it would be for ourselves if we had a runner in the race,” Snowden said.

“He is proven at Group One level and he seems to have come back a stronger, more complete racehorse this preparation. He is up there as one of the best sprinters in the country and would deserve a slot in the race,”

Webster was weighing up where to run Happy Clapper first up after two pleasing barrier trials this campaign, his first on 8 August when third to Winx (Street Cry) and Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) over 1000 metres.

Webster said yesterday the $1,000,000 Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September or the $200,000 Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on the same day were the two options under consideration for the seven-year-old.

"We've still got a couple of days to decide exactly what we want and whether we travel to Melbourne for the Memsie but Sydney is looking likely," Webster told Racing.com.

"We've got to weigh up what is the best option, taking into account travel and what is ahead for the rest of the preparation."

13 Nominated For San DomenicoCo-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden could have two runners in Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill, which received 13 nominations yesterday. The Snowdens have Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) and Taking Aim (Choisir) entered to run first up in the race alongside the now Team Hawkes-trained Chauffeur (Snitzel) and the James Cummings-trained pair Jorda (Exceed And Excel) and Marsupial (Street Cry), who was a debut winner before contesting Group races at his subsequent three starts as a juvenile.

Lindsay Park Enter Three For San DomenicoLindsay Park-trained stablemates Muraahib (Reset), Madeenaty (Exceed And Excel) and Tulip (Pierro) have been entered for the San Domenico Stakes, but only two are likely to take their place in the race. Co-trainer David Hayes said yesterday only one of Tulip and Madeenaty would join Muraahib in the San Domenico Stakes, with the filly who misses out likely to run instead at Moonee Valley on Saturday. “We’ll have a look at the fields and make a decision then,” Hayes said. “When it’s time to head off on Thursday, one will turn left and one will turn right and head to either our Flemington stable or to our Randwick stable.”

Another Sin Dually Nominated At RosehillDebut Highway Handicap (1100m) winner Another Sin (Duporth) could step straight up to stakes grade in the San Domenico Stakes, but trainer Brett Cavanough is yet to commit to a start in the Group Three race. Another Sin, who was well supported to win his first start in Class Two company on 12 August, is also nominated for a Highway Handicap

(1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday. “I don’t know if we’re aiming too high but I’ll look at the two races and decide whether we give it a go,” Cavanough said.

Addictive Nature Entered For Ming DynastyExciting colt Addictive Nature (Savabeel), who won on debut at Warwick Farm on 19 July before finishing runner-up at Randwick on 5 August, will continue his campaign in Saturday’s Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m). The Bjorn Baker-trained three-year-old, who was one of 12 nominations, has since won a Kembla Grange barrier trial over 800 metres on 16 August. Other entries include the unbeaten Assimilate (Sebring), Hypnotist (Snitzel), Mahalangur (O’Reilly) and Pride Of Darci (Darci Brahma). Nominations for the Ming Dynasty have been extended until 11am today.

Destiny’s Kiss In Premier’s CupVeteran stayer Destiny’s Kiss (Power Of Destiny) is one of 12 nominations for the ATC Premier’s Cup (Listed, 1900m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The Joe Pride-trained nine-year-old gelding ran third last start on 1 July in the ATC Winter Cup (Listed, 2400m) and has since run sixth in a 1200 metre barrier trial on 14 August. Destiny’s Kiss is joined in the $125,000 race by the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Broadside (Raise The Flag), stablemate Dee I Cee (Istidaad), the Mike Moroney-trained Loyalty Man (Fastnet Rock) and Vaucluse Bay (Al Maher). Morning Brief

Simon Zahra after two impressive jump out victories. The five-year-old daughter of Lonhro (Octagonal), who has twice been Group One-placed, could face as many as 14 rivals in Saturday’s Carlyon Stakes which received 18 nominations yesterday. Among her rivals could be the Darren Weir-trained Speedeor (Northern Meteor), the Lindsay Park-trained stablemates Hear The Chant (Nicconi) and Keen Array (Bel Esprit), Jungle Edge (Dubawi) and four-year-old Missrock (Fastnet Rock).

Garrard Ready For ‘Easier’ Task At ValleyCo-trainer Trent Busuttin is hoping his patience will pay dividends when talented filly Garrard (Sepoy) resumes in a three-year-old fillies race over 1200 metres at Moonee Valley on Saturday. A Bendigo maiden winner who was also runner-up to Catchy (Fastnet Rock), Houtzen (I Am Invincible) and Shoals (Fastnet Rock) at her three other juvenile starts, she was entered for the Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) last weekend. “She has been beaten by three pretty good fillies as a two-year-old. And while she has won a maiden, it would be nice if she we could get a confidence builder at the start of the campaign,” Busuttin said.

Almandin Also Returns At ValleyLast year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Almandin (Monsun) is set to resume in an Open Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, his first start since his Flemington victory last November. The Robert Hickmott-trained eight-year-old gelding, who has won five of his 12 starts, has been nominated for the race as have his stablemates Aloft (Galileo) and Granddukeoftuscany (Galileo). Another stablemate, Hans Holbein (Montjeu), who won at Flemington over 2500 metres on 25 April, is also entered for the race. Click here to view the Moonee Valley nominations.

Lasqueti Spirit Could Resume In Rowley MileVRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Lasqueti Spirit (Beneteau) could resume in Thursday’s Rowley Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Hawkesbury after a winless autumn campaign. The Lee Curtis-trained four-year-old mare was runner-up to Winx (Street Cry) in the Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) last February and also third in the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) before struggling in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), her final run last preparation. Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas) is also entered for the $150,000 race as is his Chris Waller-trained stablemates Kinema (Galileo), Elle Lou (Snitzel) and Life Less Ordinary (Thewayyouare). Click here to view the Hawkesbury weights

Bart Fine After Lawrence RunTrainer Darren Weir says Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) is showing no signs of the lameness diagnosed by Racing Victoria veterinarians after his first up third in Saturday’s P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield. The seven-year-old gelding is expected to press on to the $1,000,000 Memsie Stakes on 2 September. “When the boys got home they had a look at home and trotted him up and he seemed fine," Weir told Racing.com yesterday. "Going forward, I think everything is good with him. I was happy enough with his run and he'll improve quite a bit from the run but he may need another one to be at his top.”

Scales Of Justice Arrives At WarrnamboolRailway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Scales Of Justice (Not A Single Doubt) has arrived in Warrnambool ahead of a Melbourne spring campaign. The Lindsey Smith-trained five-year-old gelding, who won twice from three starts during a winter campaign in Perth, is being aimed at the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 1 October. “We had the wind behind us from Perth and it only took us two hours and 20 minutes to get here,” Smith said. “The journey to Warrnambool was a little bit harder on him, but he ate the majority of his feed the next day.” Scales Of Justice is currently based at Warrnambool trainer Jarrod McLean’s stables.

Red Cardinal Still On Course For Melbourne CupThe Andreas Wohler-trained and Australian Bloodstock-raced Red Cardinal (Montjeu) remains on course for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) despite meeting with defeat when fifth in the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m) at Deauville on Sunday. "On face value, it probably looked a bit disappointing," Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett told RSN 927 radio station. "But Andreas wasn't overly concerned. They were a bit concerned before the race, the track was very shifty and chopped out a little bit. He (Red Cardinal) was always going to get back and there was no speed, typical of those races in France - they jog to the corner and sprint home.”

Group One Targets For AloisiaTerry Henderson of OTI Racing is looking forward to targeting Group One races in the spring with the promising filly Aloisia (Azamour). The three-year-old ran second in the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Doomben when last sighted in June, and Henderson said she will be aimed at the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) this preparation. "She's looking very smart and she's bred to be an Oaks filly, but she's precocious enough to go to the Thousand Guineas first," Henderson said.

Williams Should Have Told Starter About VestRacing Victoria chief steward Terry Bailey yesterday said Craig Williams, who bizarrely weighed in overweight on P B Lawrence Stakes winner Hartnell (Authorized), should have alerted the starter about his predicament before the start of the race. Williams had weighed out with a heavier vest before realising at the barriers that by then he was wearing a different safety vest. He added extra weight by putting some farrier tools in his boots before going on to win the race. "In an ideal world, he should've told the starter what had occurred and we would've made arrangements to rectify the matter, even if it meant a major delay to the race," Bailey told Racing.com.

Overmeire And Borg Recovering From FallsSydney-based apprentice jockey Jean van Overmeire has got the all-clear after a fall at Kembla Grange. Overmeire, who came off shortly after the start of a race on Saturday, was taken to Wollongong Hospital for scans which cleared him of any fractures. Fellow junior rider Ashleigh Borg has been taken to Penrith Hospital after a trackwork fall yesterday at Hawkesbury. She was conscious but suffering soreness in her hip region.

Wagering On Victorian Racing Breaks $6 Billion MarkBetting turnover on Victorian racing grew by 8.4 per cent in the 2016/17 racing season, figures released by Racing Victoria (RV) yesterday show. Wagering turnover for the 12 months to 31 July reached $6.24 billion, while betting grew by 22 per cent at the rebranded Festival Of Racing conducted in February and March this year. RV also said betting on the state’s Thursday night racing had increased by 25.8 per cent per meeting. “The numbers show that Victorian racing is financially healthy and that customer engagement is strong with wagering surpassing $6 billion for the first time,” Thompson said.

Charmont To Be Covered By Written Tycoon

Group One-winning mare Charmont (High Chaparral) has been retired and will be covered by Written Tycoon (Iglesia) this spring. The former Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained mare won four and placed in 12 of her 25 starts for prize money earnings of NZ$294,750,

with her biggest victory coming in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in April. "She won a Group One and I've only ever had two Group One winners so she's pretty special to me," owner-breeder Bob Emery said. "She's a six-year-old mare now and she's got the pedigree so it makes sense she now becomes a broodmare."

Listed Race Next For Waipipi LadWaipipi Lad (Mr. Nancho) could be aimed at the Haunui Farm Karaka Classic (Listed, 1600m) at Pukekohe on 24 September after a brave victory at Te Rapa on Saturday. The eight-year-old lifted late to score by a length over 1600 metres under Sam Spratt, and trainer Jon Miller is eyeing a tilt at the NZ$50,000 race. “He’s a tough old bugger and Sam said she thought he was beaten when the other horse (Kitaya) headed her and was travelling a lot better, but he dug deep,” Miller said. “He’s a happy horse and I might look at the open mile in a month’s time for him.”

Jessiegee Back On TrackPromising four-year-old mare Jessiegee (Alamosa) will return to action on the opening day of the Hawke’s Bay carnival on 2 September. The daughter of Alamosa (O’Reilly) is unbeaten in two starts, most recently winning comfortably by a length and a quarter over 1600 metres at Trentham in April, and she will kick off her season on Saturday week along with Group Three-winning stablemate Ringo (Fastnet Rock). “I’m happy with both horses and they will line up on the first day at Hastings,” Awapuni-based trainer Mike Breslin said.

International

Seven For International StakesA top-class field of seven have been declared for the £1,000,000 International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2.5f) at York tomorrow, including the Aidan O’Brien-trained multiple Group One winner Churchill (Galileo). The colt won the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) in May but has been off the track since

finishing fourth to Barney Roy (Excelebration), who is also set to run in tomorrow’s Group One, in the St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) winner Ulysses (Galileo) is also among the final field, alongside Group One winners Decorated Knight (Galileo) and My Dream Boat (Lord Shanakill), Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) runner-up Cliffs Of Moher (Galileo) and Group Three-winning filly Shutter Speed (Dansili).

Cracksman Heads Voltigeur EightDual Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) placegetter Cracksman (Frankel) heads a field of eight for the Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) at York tomorrow. The John Gosden-trained colt has had just four starts and was last sighted running a close second in the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) on 1 July. Aidan O’Brien will be represented by three runners, including Group One placegetter Venice Beach (Galileo), while the Juddmonte Farms-raced Mirage Dancer (Frankel) will also take his chance in the £170,000 race. Flymetothestars Not Certain For EborThe Sir Mark Prescott-trained Flymetothestars (Sea The Stars), who heads the pre post betting for the valuable Ebor Handicap (1m6f) at York on Saturday, will only run if ground conditions ease. "It's not looking good. The forecast is for no rain really. It all depends on the weather," said Tim Palin, racing director for owners Middleham Park, Mrs Jones and Osborne House. "The horse is in great shape. I saw him on the treadmill on Saturday and saw him swim as well. The horse

is in A1 nick, but we believe he wants cut in the ground.” The £285,000 Ebor Handicap was won last year by the late Heartbreak City (Lando), who went on to finish a close second in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) last November.

Del Mar Mile To BlackjackcatThe Mark Glatt-trained Blackjackcat (4 g Tale of the Cat - Bootleg Annie by Go For Gin) ran out a narrow winner of the Del Mar Mile (Gr 2, 8f) at Del Mar on Sunday evening. The in-form four-year-old, who won the Wickerr Stakes (Listed, 8f) over the same course and distance at his last start, beat Vyjack (Into Mischief) by a head with a further length back to Om (Munnings) in third place. Can’thelpbelieving Wins Sky ClassicThe Graham Motion-trained Can’thelpbelieving (6 g Duke of Marmalade - Embark by Soviet Star) won the Sky Classic Stakes (Gr 2, 11f) at Woodbine on Sunday evening. The six-year-old, who finished a close second in the United Nations Stakes (Gr 1, 11f) in July, was restrained in midfield by jockey Joe Bravo. Radcliffe was delighted to secure the colt and revealed he will be sent to champion trainer Andre Fabre.

“He is just a gorgeous individual, I wasn’t leaving Deauville without him!” Radcliffe said.

“He will go to André Fabre and we are hoping for the best.”

Earlier in the session, a Haras de Montaigu-consigned filly from the first crop of Juddmonte Farms stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) sold for €750,000 to Meridian International / David Redvers Bloodstock.

The daughter of Group One placegetter Ysoldina (Kendor) was catalogued as Lot 101 and is a half-sister to four winners, including the now-retired Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Wings Of Eagles (Pour Moi).

This is also the family of 2008 Prix Saint-Alary (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Belle Et Celebre (Peintre Celebre), dual Group Two winner

Whortleberry (Starborough) and Group Three winners Appel Au Maitre (Starborough) and Valentino (Valanour).

Redvers was bidding alongside Ghislain Bozo, and he said the filly would be raced by a partnership including Qatar Racing, Laurent Dassault and an unnamed Chinese investor.

"She's been bought for a new syndicate of Qatar Racing and some new Chinese clients of Ghislain Bozo of Meridian International, who, if they're very keen, I'm sure will become large and long-term players in this industry,” Redvers told the Racing Post.

“They've invested in the breeze-ups with us and in a filly yesterday, and we're basically trying to do something nice and long-term for them, so this filly has been bought to be a racehorse first and for the breeding shed second, when hopefully she'll join a very select broodmare band.

“It's not often you get the chance to buy a half-sister to a current Derby winner, and from such very good breeders as well.”

Having missed out on the top lot on Sunday, Angus Gold left with the third top lot when striking the winning bid of €420,000 for Lot 171, a colt by Invincible Spirit (Green Desert).

The Haras des Capucines-consigned colt is a brother to the Group Three-winning and Group One-placed High Celebrity, while this is also the same family of champion US three-year-old Surfside (Seattle Slew) and 1994 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 8.5f) winner Flanders (Seeking The Gold).

“Sheikh Hamdan loved the horse since he saw him and was very keen to have him,” Gold said.

“We have been lucky with Invincible Spirit and hopefully if this one can run he could be a stallion.”

In total, Angus Gold purchased five lots on Sunday for a total aggregate of €1,360,000, behind only Kerri Radcliffe in the purchasers standings.

Having combined to purchase the top two lots at the opening session of the August Yearling Sale on Saturday, the partnership of Mayfair Speculators, Peter and Ross Doyle and M V Magnier were again active in securing Lot 126 for €400,000.

The No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) colt was consigned by Camas Park and Glenvale Studs

and is out of Group Three winner Chaibia (Peintre Celebre) from the family of 1994 Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Erhaab (Chief’s Crown).

Peter Doyle made the winning bid and said he was pleased to secure a yearling by No Nay Never, who will stand at Coolmore Australia for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) this spring, after missing out on Lot 4 on Saturday.

“We always try to support a new stallion and were underbidder on the other No Nay Never yesterday (who sold to Kerri Radcliffe for €480,000),” Doyle said.

“This colt is a two-year-old type who looks racy. We haven’t made our minds up about who will train him.”

A colt by Dubawi from the from of Newsells Park Stud also sold for €400,000 at Deauville on Sunday.

Catalogued as Lot 136, the January-born yearling was purchased by Japanese owner Koichiro Yamaguchi, and he is the first foal out of Group Three winner Daksha (Authorized) from the family of Group One winner Golden Opinion (Slew O’ Gold).

Yamaguchi was a member of the syndicate that raced Arrowfield Stud shuttler Real Impact (Deep Impact) and he was thrilled to make his first purchase in Deauville.

“I wanted to buy either a Frankel, a Kingman or a Dubawi,” said Yamaguchi.

“I was underbidder on Lot 66 (by Frankel) yesterday and am delighted to be able to buy this one. It is my first purchase in Deauville.”

Meanwhile, Rifa Mustang purchased one lot, a filly by Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) for €135,000. Catalogued as Lot 113 from the draft of La Motteraye, the filly is out of the Listed winner and Group-placed mare Aquila d’Oriente (Dubawi), from the family of the multiple Group One winner Falbrav (Fairy King).

The filly had originally been purchased by Pegasus Farms for €75,000 at last year’s Goffs November Foal Sale.

The conclusion of Sunday’s session brought Part One of the August Yearling Sale to a close, with 122 yearlings sold out of the 160 offered across Saturday and Sunday achieving a 76 per cent clearance rate, down from 80 per cent in 2016.

The average price for Part One increased to €240,008, up by 12 per cent from last year, while the total aggregate dropped by 2.9 percent to €29,486,000 with 17 less horses sold.

Several of the key figures for Sunday’s session also saw drops on last year, with 55 of the 78 lots sold for an aggregate of

Lot 126 No Nay Never - Chaibia colt RACING POST

€11,979,000, down by 23.92 per cent from €15,745,000 achieved when 64 lots sold at the corresponding session last August.

The average fell by 11.47 per cent to €217,800 from €246,016, while the median was also down to €160,000 from €190,000.

Darley’s Dubawi was the leading sire with four lots by him having sold for €2,900,000 at an average of €725,000, while the seven lots by Coolmore’s champion sire Galileo to have sold made €3,625,000 at an average of €517,857.

Coolmore Australia shuttler No Nay Never was the leading first season sire by average with five yearlings by him having sold for €1,095,000, while Windsor Park Stud shuttler Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) had four lots sold at an average of €215,000.

An online audience of around 2,000,000 viewers tuned in to watch the China Equine Cultural Festival (CECF) Ordos Race Day in

Inner Mongolia on Sunday, the final day of the two-day lifestyle, business and thoroughbred racing festival which was attended by a crowd of 16,000.

Among the spectators were business and thoroughbred industry leaders from across China, as well as representatives from Australia, Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Africa and the United States.

“The response to the 2017 CECF Ordos is indicative to the opportunity for the creation of a commercial thoroughbred industry right here in Ordos, Inner Mongolia,” said Teo Ah Khing, chairman of the Inner Mongolia Yitai Desert

Star Horse Industries and the China Horse Club.

“Opportunities like this are very special and have national implications. They are also not possible without the leadership and support of the Ordos government and Yiqi government, all of our partners and sponsors, especially our four feature race sponsors 1436 (Inner Mongolia-based Chinese cashmere label), the Australian Turf Club, Sir Owen Glenn and Anglo Hibernian Bloodstock Insurance and our domestic and international partners.”

The race day itself centred around four feature races, the CECF International Breeders’ Cup (1000m), CECF North Dakota Classic (2000m), Sir Owen Glenn Genghis Khan Cup (1200m) and CECF Champions Cup (1000m).

Racing honours were shared equally between Chinese and international jockeys on

Ordos Race Day Proves A Successthe track, with Australian rider Daniel Moor and South Africa’s Sherman Brown successful in the CECF International Breeders’ Cup and the CECF North Dakota Classic respectively.

China’s Liu Sanping prevailed in a tight finish to the Sir Owen Glenn Genghis Khan Cup, while China’s only female jockey Zhang Ruirui rode the winner of the CECF Champions Cup.

“CECF Ordos Race Day is now a top event domestically and one of the top events in the industry worldwide” said Jason Zhu, CEO of the Inner Mongolia Yitai Desert Star Horse Industries.

“The internationalization of the event and its professional operation and development would not be the same if it were not for the event’s sponsorship partners, industry support, and support of the Ordos City Sports Bureau and Yiqi Banner local government.

“Through 70 years of perseverance, Ordos has experienced rapid economic and urban development towards becoming a ‘gem of the north’. The Inner Mongolia Yitai Desert Star Horse Industries sees this event as an opportunity to accelerate the development of Ordos becoming a thoroughbred horse breeding and racing centre, being promoted to the world as a horse industry hub, and establishing Ordos as the ‘horse capital’ of China.”

Unbeaten Jukebox The Pride Of WA

Speedy 3YO colt, Jukebox - winner of Saturday’s Group Three KS Environmental Vain Stakes over 1100m at Caulfield - is trained in Victoria, was sold in Victoria, is by a NSW based stallion and has done all his racing (thus far) in Victoria.

However, it turns out he’s as West Australian as good plonk and mining multis and joined - on Saturday - a lengthy list of stakes winners who first saw the light of day at Neville & Susan Duncan’s Oakland Park Stud, a showcase property nestled between Busselton and the Margaret River.

“People have a tendency to underestimate the quality of horse we breed in the west, but we sent across five horses to be sold under the Blue Gum banner at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and ended up topping the averages,” Neville Duncan points out.

“Jukebox was among them and he ended up being sold to Ciaron Maher for $200,000, while also in that draft for us was Ducimus who won the Listed Talindert Stakes at Flemington

and was fourth in the Vain on Saturday. He’s obviously looking for firm going and a little longer, while another of our Inglis Premier yearlings was Fantastic Show (by Not A Single Doubt from Evoked) who won as a 2YO in Hong Kong.

“Interestingly, West Australian breds like Quilista, Vega Magic and Black Heart Bart all ran very well on Saturday too, which is a ringing endorsement for a local industry that only makes up a relatively small proportion of the racing population.

“We’re happy to fly under the radar though - it’s not about promoting yourself.

“Bottom line, people will keep coming back if you keep supplying them with good racehorses and you have to sell winners to balance the books and move forward.

“Ultimately, you should always let your horses do the talking.”

Talking? Oakland Park breds have been doing a lot of that since the Duncans got serious about their horse breeding in the mid 1990s with subsequent farm graduates including 11-time Group One winner (and dual Cox Plate hero) Northerly, Group One winners Covertly and Shirazamatazz and multiple Group winners, Marasco, North Boy, Roman Time and Grand Nirvana all calling Oakland Park home.

Another is Group One Kingston Town Classic winner, Ihtsahymn, who is a half sister to Listed WATC Gimcrack Stakes winner, Jestatune, the mother of Jukebox and three other winners, who was also bred at Oakland Park.

“We purchased Umatune, Jestatune’s dam, at the 2003 Inglis Broodmare Sale in Sydney and she was a terrific mare for us,” Duncan adds. “Two stakes winners, two other stakes horses and now Jestatune has an unbeaten stakes winner in Jukebox.

“ULTIMATELY, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS

LET YOUR HORSES DO THE TALKING.” NEVILLE DUNCAN,

OAKLAND PARK STUD

“We’ve got a Not a Single Doubt yearling filly from Jestatune but the mare was later sold and died before producing another foal. Still got a few of the family running around our paddocks though.”

Remarkably, Oakland Park’s success has come from a relatively small base.“Up until recently, we only used to breed from 14 to 15 mares

annually,” Duncan reveals. “However, we’ve now got four full time staff on our 300 acre property, with around 30 mares to support our three stallions: Rogano, a full brother to Not a Single Doubt, whose oldest have just turned four and is currently ranked eighth in Australia on the average earnings index; Sessions, a Group Two winning son of Lonhro and; Safeguard, an unbeaten 2YO by Exceed And Excel, whose oldest progeny are now yearlings and is standing for the first time at Oaklands in 2017.”

One thing is for certain, Ciaron Maher will seek out the Oakland XX5 brand on either side of the Nullabor from now on, given the steady rise and rise of Jukebox.

First sighted in a 2YO Maiden at Geelong on 12 January, where he won comfortably, Jukebox established his bona fides with an emphatic

victory in the $250,000 Inglis Premier at Caulfield on 4 February, scoring with two panels to spare.

Unfortunately, problems with his feet saw Jukebox sent to the spelling paddock instead of an intended Blue Diamond route.

Maher was, naturally enough, buoyed with Jukebox’s triumphant return in the Vain and said the colt is next likely to start in the Group Two Danehill Stakes over 1200m at Flemington on 16 September.

“He (Jukebox) had a good, long break and has come back really well,” Maher enthused. “You love to see a 3YO colt resume like that and he’s very exciting.”

Maher also paid special tribute to “good mate”, John Bunting, who has worked extensively on the colt’s feet and is regarded as one of the best farriers in Victoria.

“Jukebox had a problem with his feet from the time he entered Ciaron’s, so he had to race with glue on shoes throughout his first prep,” Bunting reveals.

“There was always a weakness on the inside branch of his foot and it only deteriorated from the Geelong win onwards and ultimately saw him scratched from both the Blue Diamond and the Todman.

“So, Ciaron sent Jukebox down to Lee Powell’s Fulmen Park which has a great sandy base and lots of grass cover and let the horse get back to nature.

“We left the shoes off and attended to his feet every two weeks and he’s absolutely thrived. The action is good and the feet are now the best I’ve seen them.”

OverviewGroup Two winner and former champion Western Australia two-

year-old colt Lucky Street (Oratorio (AUS)) will join the Darling View Thoroughbreds roster for an introductory fee of $5,000 (plus GST) this spring.

The former Trevor Andrews-trained entire won six and placed in two of his 12 career starts, amassing prize money earnings of $814,350.

The now five-year-old ran sixth on his debut at Belmont in October 2014 and duly built on that effort when opening his account by five lengths over 1000 metres on his second racecourse start.

He followed that runaway success with a comfortable win in the Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) at Ascot in February 2015 before taking out the Perth Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in ready fashion the following month.

He was sent off the $1.50 favourite for the Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) at Ascot on his final two-year-old start, and he did not disappoint with a dominant four and a half length victory from the front over Mystic Maid (Patronize).

Lucky Street registered his first three-year-old win over 1200 metres in November 2015 before running a good seventh in the weight-for-age Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) behind champion sprinter Buffering (Mossman).

He went on to run a close second in the Summer Scorcher Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and narrowly won the Miss Andretti Stakes (Listed, 1100m) later that season and he was retired from racing earlier this year.

"Lucky Street has got what breeders look for in spades," Darling View stud manager Brent Atwell said following news of his retirement. "He's by a champion juvenile sire and was a champion two year-old in his own right."

Lucky Street is one of ten named foals out of the winning mare Rumours (Umatilla), herself a half-sister to the dam of former champion Singapore three-year-old miler Given Vision (Belong To Me), making him a half-brother to three winners.

His second dam Windswept Valley (Avon Valley) produced four winners from seven foals to race and is a half-sister to dual stakes winner Tsunami (Gunsynd) and stakes placegetter Castalia (Century).

Panamanian jockey Elvis Trujillo was the star of the show on Sunday, kicking home a winning treble for the afternoon to firmly establish

himself in the Macau jockeys’ ranks for next season.

Trujillo, who only arrived in Macau six weeks ago, was in brilliant form for the afternoon and started his winning run with a good ride on the K H Leong-trained Ho Sai Lei (More Than Ready) to win the 25-45 rated event over 1500 metres (turf).

Ho Sai Lei sat off race leader Lucky And Powerful (Mastercraftsman) to the corner before pouncing on him in the straight, and under hard riding had enough in hand to stave off the late runs of runner-up Lucky Station (Testa Rossa), and Haayil Shadow (Haayil) who ran in third.

The Stephen Chow-trained Fontainebleau (Ekraar) brought up a hat-trick of wins when he led throughout under Trujillo to win the 30-55 rated event over 1200 metres (turf).

Fontainebleau is a big, strong looking son of Ekraar (Red Ransom) that is going to develop into a nice sprinting type, and he appears to be improving with every run.

New Zealand import Snowball (Sebring) rounded out Trujillo’s day when he powered home from well back in the run to win the Class Four Handicap over 1050 metres on the sand.

Snowball was completely outpaced in the early stages and was still spotting the leaders seven lengths coming to the corner. Once in the straight the chestnut son of Sebring (More Than Ready) rocketed home in the centre of the track to win easily from Tyson (Redoute’s Choice), with Mackinac Island (Hotel Grand) in third.

Prepared in Macau by Alan Tam, Snowball commenced his career with Ken and Bev Kelso at Matamata in New Zealand. He won a maiden

at Te Rapa in good fashion before tackling Group and Listed races where he came up short. Whilst not a big horse, the gelding has matured into a nice four-year-old who will have further success in Macau.

Elvis Trujillo commenced his apprenticeship in his home country of Panama. After a flying start to his career he moved to Mexico for a short while before settling in the USA, which is where he has spent the majority of his riding career to date. Trujillo’s resume reads well with over 2,200 race winners, including 50 Graded races. His biggest win to date was in the 2007 Breeder’s Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) on Maryfield (Elusive Quality).

Alan Tam took training honors for the afternoon, also saddling the winner of the previous race, the Class Three over 1500 metres (turf) with Peace Get Joy (Statue Of Liberty) who scored under a good ride from Wayne Smith.

Peace Get Joy flew the gates under Smith and led to the first corner before handing up the lead to Wonder Holy (Holy Roman Emperor). The gelding ended up with the run of the race in third on the inside before popping away from the rails to challenge at the 250 metres. The well-supported Tuhao Power (Conatus) came to win the race and briefly headed Peace Get Joy, however under strong riding Peace Get Joy lifted late to rally for a neck win.

Sunday’s win was a gutsy effort and his first attempt over 1500 metres, and on this evidence Peace Get Joy will be picking up his share of cheques in Macau
