DOCTORAL PROGRAM

On July 1, 1965, the Board of Regents of the Florida State University System established a doctoral program in Art Education in the Department of Art Education at Florida State University. The first doctoral students were accepted in January 1966.

The doctoral program, which may lead to either the doctor of philosophy or doctor of education degree, consists of three special areas of concentration: Art Education, Art Therapy, and Arts Administration. Many of the recipients of the doctoral degree are now teaching on the faculties of colleges and universities throughout the United States or are administering arts programs in art education or arts institutions and agencies.

Purpose: The program is designed to produce leaders in instruction, research, and administration in Art Education, and to encourage students to make a significant contribution to the body of knowledge , which constitutes the teaching/learning and administrating processes in art. The objectives of the program are sought through:

1. Selective admission procedures2. A curriculum which is interdisciplinary and adaptive to deepening knowledge

in a particular research area3. Continues evaluation to ascertain achievement level and potential of the

student for further development4. Research opportunities and support5. Close faculty/student relationships

In the field of art education the difference in the Doctorate of Philosophy and the Doctorate of Education is to be found in the unique competencies of the candidate and the means used to attain personal objectives. In all instances, both the Ph.D.and Ed.D. candidates are required to achieve a level of competency in common basic information

Page 8: APPLICATION INFORMATION - Florida State · Web viewSlides of your art work and/or your writing samples Submission of a departmental questionnaire A personal statement of 1000 words

from the theoretical technological aspects of the field. The nature of the individualized doctoral studies program determines the depth at which the candidate pursues one or the other.

Requirements: The art education doctoral admissions requirements and procedures are subject to all regulations specified for graduate studies in the University’s Graduate Bulletin for the academic year in which the doctoral student first matriculates.

Three academic years of graduate study beyond the baccalaureate degree are usually required. Another requirement is residency, which is stipulated in the graduate bulletin; after the student has earned a Masters degree, the student must be continuously enrolled

on the Florida State University campus or one of its teaching centers for a minimum of twenty-four graduate semester hours in any period of twelve consecutive months. The remaining years of study need not be continuous. The total number of hours accumulated beyond the minimum for the completion of the doctoral program is dependent upon the recommendation of the candidate’s major professor and the supervisory committee.

Time Limit: All requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed within five calendar years form the time the student passes the preliminary examination or the requirements of passing a new preliminary examination will be set by the committee.

General Admissions Requirements: Admission requirements include taking the Graduate Record Examination and achieving a score of 1000 or more on the combined verbal/quantitative portions, or a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale on master’s degree from an accredited institution, official transcripts form all previous course work, three letters of recommendation, examples of written work, and a 1,000 word biography which should include career goals and why the applicant is applying to the program. Evidence of teaching excellence through student production and/or educational performance (visuals) may also be included. The baccalaureate and masters degrees must be from an accredited college or university in art or art education. Deficiencies may be made up. The applicant must be in good standing in the institution of higher education last attended.

Art Education Requirements: There is a departmental questionnaire that is mandatory to complete (included with the packet of information). Evidence of recent creative works with slides and/or published papers is required. Evidence of teaching excellence through student production and/or educational performance (visuals) may also be included. A record of at least two years of experience related to the area of concentration is recommended. If possible, arrange an interview with the chair of the department at least one term prior to admission.

Diagnostic Exam: A departmental administered written diagnostic examination is given to the student during the first year of doctoral study. The exam provides the faculty with ideas for courses that will be recommended for you to take.

Page 9: APPLICATION INFORMATION - Florida State · Web viewSlides of your art work and/or your writing samples Submission of a departmental questionnaire A personal statement of 1000 words

Supervisory Committee: During the second or third semester, the student consults with the chair of the department and with the professor under whom the student may be interested in working. The department chair will appoint the major professor with the agreement of the student and major professor. The major professor works with the student with regard to the selection of other committee members. The student inquires of faculty members as to their willingness to serve.

Initial Committee Meeting: Prior to the initial meeting of the student’s committee, a summary of college coursework and a statement of goals, a vita, and a brief research interest paper are presented to each member. The program is developed to utilize strengths, make up deficiencies, and to provide knowledge required for the accomplishment of original research.

Research Method Requirements: Students are offered several options for meeting research method requirements. Selection is decided by the student and his/her supervisory committee. All students must take Statistics and Research Survey. Additional options include research methods courses in:

1. Philosophy2. History3. Qualitative research4. Quantitative research5. Foreign language translation

Program of Studies: the doctoral student is expected to plan with his/her major professor program studies which will develop a optimum level of scholarly performance, as well as in-depth knowledge and research competence in the following areas: art education theory, art content, educational foundations, research and the candidate’s specialty.

A minimum of thirty semester hours of coursework beyond the Masters degree and exclusive of the hours earned in dissertation credit is required. (See section on Doctoral Degree Programs of the University Bulletin for important detailed information about general regulations).

All art education doctoral students must include in their programs of study in Art Education:

1. ARE 6937r Structure (3 hrs)2. ARE 6937r Social Foundations (3 hrs)3. ARE 6380 Teaching/Learning (3 hrs)

The form and content of this exam will be

Page 10: APPLICATION INFORMATION - Florida State · Web viewSlides of your art work and/or your writing samples Submission of a departmental questionnaire A personal statement of 1000 words

determined by the graduate faculty. Prior to the examination, the students’s examing committee will determine whether the student:

1. has a B average and2. has progressed sufficiently in the study of the discipline and research methods

in the area of her or his proposed dissertation (See University Bulletin, Doctoral Degree Program for further regulations)

The examining committee will report the outcome of the examination to the academic dean: passed, failed, additional work to be completed, or to be reexamined. The report following a reexamination must indicate whether the student either passed or failed. Passed examinations are also reported to the Office of the Registrar for inclusion in the student’s permanent record.

Admission to Candidacy: A student who has passed the preliminary examination is considered a candidate for the doctoral degree. A student must be admitted to candidacy at least six months prior to the granting of the degree. The purpose of this requirement is to assure a minimal lapse of time for effective work on the dissertation after delineation of the problem and procedural methodology. An admission to Candidacy form must be filed in the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies prior to registration for dissertation hours.

Prospectus: After being admitted to candidacy the student will submit to the major professor, supervisory committee and department chair a prospectus on a research project suitable for a doctoral dissertation.

Dissertation: The student must register for ARE 6890 Dissertation each term in which a substantial amount of work is done on the dissertation and be registered in the final term in which the degree is granted (a minimum of 2 credit hours of dissertation). A minimum of 24 dissertation credits are required. The student is expected to work closely with his or her major professor throughout this area of study.

Final Term Degree Clearance: During the first two weeks of the semester in which the candidate expects to receive the doctorate, he or she should apply at the Office of the Registrar for a diploma and secure a “Final Term Degree Clearance” form. The completed form must be submitted to the manuscript and to the Final Clearance Advisor before the student is eligible for the degree.
