APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR WATERPROOFING

CONCRETE STRUCTURES WITH PENETRON ADMIX®

1. PREFACE TO PENETRON CRYSTALLINE WATERPROOFING

PENETRON® Cementitious Crystalline waterproofing products are formulations consisting of common cement, quartz, special grade sand and multiple activating chemicals that provide an effective, permanent concrete waterproofing system. The PENETRON® chemicals work by penetrating into the capillary tracts of concrete through pressure of osmosis, Brownian movement and dry particle reactions. The active ingredients of PENETRON® react with various concrete minerals, forming insoluble crystals that fill out cracks, pores and voids up to a width of at least 0.5mm.

INSOLUBLE CRYSTALS WITHIN THE CRACKS & CAPILLARY TRACTS Of CONCRETE

PENETRON® in its many forms is suitable for use in reservoirs, tunnels, tanks, foundation floors and walls, parking decks, manholes and sewer pipes, sewage and water treatment structures, swimming pools, precast components and underground vaults. It is equally effective if applied on either side of a concrete structure or placed integrally at the time of concrete pour and can be applied to both old and new concrete, and concrete block.

*The purpose of this document is to give general guidance about the use of PENETRON ADMIX®, in various applications and it will be referred as such.

2. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION PENETRON ADMIX® consists of Portland cement and

various active, proprietary chemicals. These active chemicals react with the moisture in fresh concrete and with the by-products of cement hydration to cause a catalytic reaction, which generates a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. Thus, the concrete becomes permanently sealed against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction.

3. MIXING DOSAGE 1% by weight of cement (a minimum of 0.8%). PENETRON® ADMIX must be added to the concrete at the time of batching or at the jobsite.

4. APPLICATION PENETRON® ADMIX can be added to the concrete at the time of batching or in the Ready–Mix Truck (at the site).

4.1. MIXING PROCESS AT THE READY-MIX AND PRECAST BATCHING PLANT The sequence of procedures for addition will vary according to the type of batch plant operation and equipment. The following are some typical mixing guidelines:

• Ready-Mix Plant – Dry Batch Operation a) Add PENETRON ADMIX® in powder form to the drum of the ready-mix truck. b) Drive the truck under the batch plant and add 60%-70% of the required water, along with 300-

500 lbs. (136-227 kg) of aggregate. c) Mix the materials for 2-3 minutes to ensure the PENETRON ADMIX® is distributed evenly

throughout the mix water.

d) Add the balance of materials to the ready-mix truck in accordance with standard batching practices.

• Ready Mix Plant - Central Mix / Wet Batch Operation:

a) Mix PENETRON ADMIX® with water to form a very thin slurry (e.g. 18 kg) of powder mixed

with 22.7 l of water).

b) Pour the required amount of material into the drum of the ready-mix truck.

c) The aggregate, cement, sand and water should be batched and mixed in the plant in

accordance with standard practices (taking into account the quantity of water that has

already been placed in the ready-mix truck).

d) Pour the concrete into the truck and mix for at least 5 minutes to ensure even distribution

of PENETRON ADMIX® throughout the concrete.

• Precast batch plant:

Add PENETRON ADMIX® to the rock and sand, then mix thoroughly for 2-3 minutes before adding the cement and water. The total concrete mass should be blended using standard practices.

*PENETRON ADMIX added to the aggregates on aggregate conveyor belt

NOTE: It is important to obtain a homogeneous mixture of PENETRON® ADMIX with the concrete. Therefore, do not add dry PENETRON® ADMIX powder directly to wet concrete as this may cause clumping and thorough dispersion will not occur. For further information regarding the proper use of PENETRON® ADMIX for a specific project, consult with a Penetron technical representative

4.2. MIXING AT THE JOB SITE / IN THE READY-MIX TRUCK: a) Make note of the capacity of the Ready-mix truck & the weight of cement/m3 beforehand. b) On the arrival of the Ready-mix truck to the site, Commence the mixing procedure of

PENETRON ADMIX with water. This shall be carried out in batches. c) PENETRON ADMIX shall be mixed with clean potable water at the ratio of 1:1.26 by weight. d) Determine the quantity of water and PENETRON ADMIX in 1 pail. e) Fill the pail first with the water and then add PENETRON ADMIX while simultaneously mixing it

with a hand held paddle mixer. f) Mix for at least a minute until a homogeneous thin slurry is achieved.

The PENETRON ADMIX is added to water and mixed thoroughly with a hand held paddle mixer until a

homogenous slurry is obtained

g) Pour the PENETRON ADMIX slurry into the Mix drum. For PENETRON® ADMIX to be mixed uniformly in concrete, the mixing time should be no less than 6 minutes (1 minute / m3 concrete) and the Ready – Mix Drum should spin in high speed rotation. When the mixing time is complete concrete is ready to be poured.

mix truck

5. CASE STUDY FOR MIXING PENETRON ADMIX AT THE JOB SITE

PENETRON ADMIX SPECIFICATION: ➢ PENETRON ADMIX is added at 1% by the weight of cement. ➢ For PENETRON® ADMIX to form a uniform homogenous slurry it requires 1.26 kg of clean

potable water for every 1 kg of PENETRON® ADMIX.

5.1. STEPS FOR CALCULATING THE QUANTITY OF PENETRON ADMIX FOR THE AFOREMENTIONED CONDITIONS

STEP 1. Calculate the weight of PENETRON ADMIX in 1m3 : 3.5Kg of PENETRON ADMIX (1% of 350kg of cement)

STEP 2. Calculate the Total amount of PENETRON ADMIX in 6m3(Capacity of the truck)

: 21Kg of PENETRON ADMIX STEP 3. Calculate the total quantity of water in accordance with PENETRON ADMIX specs.

: 26.46Ltr of clean potable water (1.26Ltr of water for 1Kg of PENETRON ADMIX) STEP 4: Calculate the total weight of the PENETRON ADMIX slurry (ADMIX+WATER): 47.46Ltr STEP 5: Accordingly divide the total quantity of PENETRON ADMIX slurry into equal batches of

pails, such that the weight of 1 pail is manageable to be carried around. In this case, 4 equal batches were made and 1 pail weighed 11.86kg which is fairly manageable.

STEP 6: Using the quantity of PENETRON ADMIX from ‘STEP 2’ and the total number of pails

required from ‘STEP 5’, Calculate the weight of PENETRON ADMIX and water in 1 pail.

In this case, 5.26Kg of PENETRON ADMIX & 6.6Ltr of Water is obtained.

6. NOTES

• PENETRON ADMIX TRACER is incorporated within the ADMIX to identify its presence in the

freshly cast concrete by giving the bleed water a distinct green colour.

• The Tracer does not discolour concrete nor affects the performance of the ADMIX. The

colour shall dissipate once the bleed water has dried out.

• The used amount of PΕΝΕΤRON® ADMIX admixture in the concrete does not affect the

normal practices of good concreting, liquidation, vibration and curing.

• PΕΝΕΤRON® ADMIX is not affecting concrete slump or workability. In case concrete slump

needs to be adjusted we are adding the necessary quantity of a certified superplasticizer,

instead of water. Water is not advisable to be added after concrete is mixed.

• PENETRON® ADMIX can be used with all types of concrete admixtures and all types of

cement, all grades of concrete and w/c ratio that varies from 0.25 to 0.67.

• PENETRON® ADMIX mixing time on the Ready –Mix truck (1 minute / m3 of concrete) under

high speed drum rotation, should be followed in order to equally disperse throughout the

volume of concrete..

7. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS When incorporating PENETRON® ADMIX , the temperature of the concrete mix should be above 4℃ 8. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION PENETRON® ADMIX contains cement which is alkaline. Will irritate eyes and skin and may cause skin sensitization. Wear appropriate eye, skin and breathing protection when using this product. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. For further information please refer to Material Safety Data Sheet. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
