The Greek mathematician and inventor Archimedes was not the first to use a lever, but about 250 before Christ he was the first to use mathematics to describe how one works. To illustrate the power of leverage he famously said, “Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the earth.” For all its power, a lever works only if you have a firm place to stand. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Now I would remind you brothers and sisters of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand.” (1 Corinthians 15:1, NRSV) The key to transforming a hu-man life is to stand in the right place. Paul is telling us that the good news of the life, death and resurrection of Je-sus – the gospel – is that place to stand.

In a world of constant and accelerating change, how will we keep our moral and spiritual bear-ings? Without a place to stand, we will be swept along by the strongest cultural current of the moment. As rocker John Melencamp sings, “You’d better stand for someth’n, or you’re gonna fall for anything.” With so many demands on our lives and com-munities, pulling this way and that, it is easy to begin to believe that life and history just hurdle along with neither sense nor center. But the gospel says there is a place to stand; a place of peace in the most violent storm. “Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand.” (Romans 5:1-2a, NRSV) Jesus Christ offers you a place to stand; a solid place that gives both sense and center to life. And his grace invites you to come. The Psalm-ist prayed, “From the end of the earth I call to you, when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61:2) The Rock of Ages is the place to stand! Your Pastor,

Remembering Jan Swan Jan Swan, the wife of Covenant’s former pastor Allan Swan, died Feb. 18 in Oak Harbor, Washington. Jan had a heart attack on Feb. 17 and died the next day. In an email note to Phil Ruebel, Allan said that if Jan had lived another 4 months they would have celebrated 50 years of marriage. Long time Covenant members have fond memories of Jan and the service she gave in Covenant’s early years. Before we had a building, many meetings were held in the Swan’s home, and vacation Bible school in their back yard. Allan’s address is: 4516 N. Jones Rd. Oak Harbor, WA 98277

Allan has asked that memorial gifts be made to a mission project in Africa that was dear to Jan. Their church – the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church – is raising funds to build a cottage in Uganda for eight orphans and the staff to teach them. Make checks payable to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, and write “Watoto/Jan Swan Memorial” on the memo line. Mail it to: Watoto Project Oak Harbor Lutheran Church 1253 NW 2nd Ave

Oak Harbor, WA 98277

One minute each night In WWII, there was an advisor to Churchill who organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every night at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, it's people and peace. This had an amazing effect as bombing stopped! There is now a group of people who are or-ganizing the same thing here in America .. If you would like to participate: each evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time (8:00 PM Central, 7:00 PM Mountain, 6:00 PM Pacific), stop whatever you are doing and spend one min-ute praying: for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens and for peace in the world. If you know anyone who would like to partici-pate, please pass this along. Someone said if people really understood the full extent of the power we have avail-able through prayer, we might be speech-less. [AMEN!] Our prayers are the most powerful asset we have. Kairos is an inter-denominational ministry of lay-men and women, called into community and sent into the environment of the correctional institution. We are united in our love for Christ and our desire to serve Him by bringing his love and forgiveness to men and women behind bars.

In Idaho we are currently brining Christ’s love and forgiveness to the men at I.S.C.I., the medium-security prison south of Boise. Twice each year a team of 25-30 men go into the prison for four days to bring the Gospel to up to 42 inmates. We call this a “3 ½ day short course in Christianity.” This course is targeted toward the non-Christian or marginal Christian population of the prison. This year’s dates are: April 24-27, 2008. There are many ways in which you can have an active part of this ministry: inside or outside team members, letter writers, financial backers, prayer warriors and COOKIE BAKERS.

Each prisoner and each worker at the prison is given a dozen, homemade cookies. That comes to the amazing total of 3000 dozen cookies. Kathy Merk is organizing the cookies for the April Kairos. If you are willing to bake some cookies please con-tact Kathy at 409-0937 or [email protected]. There are specific guidelines for baking the cook-ies which you will need to follow.

CPC Personnel Committee is seeking volunteers with professional experience in Human Resources or Management includ-ing recruiting, legal compliance, benefits performance reviews and compensation. Please contact Elder Eileen Rutherford at [email protected] or 375-9439 to leave a message.

Thank you for your prayers…

Thank you for all your prayers, calls, and cards during my surgery and rehab at home. I look forward to being back at church soon. God is so faithful ! Hazel Coombe

Diploma in Lay Pastoral Ministry Whitworth University (Spokane, WA)

June 2-6 and June 9-13, 2008 Churches and religious organizations are looking for qualified men and women to serve in non-ordained positions of pastoral leadership in the church. Unfortunately, many otherwise qualified people are reluctant to pursue these positions be-cause the do not feel adequately prepared biblically and theologically, or they find themselves lacking in the practical skills they need to be successful in ministry. Others are already involved in ministry positions but feel limited by their lack of training and ongoing opportunities for development and support. The Diploma in Lay Pastoral Ministry is one of many programs being offered through the Weyer-haeuser Center for Christian Faith & Learning at Whitworth University. The center is dedicated to providing innovative programs designed to promote Christian scholarship, greater spiritual depth in stu-dents, renewal of clergy and laity, and a better un-derstanding of the dynamics between religion and culture in the Pacific Northwest. For more informa-tion about the center, please contact Michelle See-fried at 509.777.3275, or by e-mail at [email protected].
