...to your April issue. This month we visit the small village of Cachopo. Although the name would suggest a location in the wild, wild west, it is only 40km from Tavira. The drive up to Cachopo is simply stunning, with beautiful coastal views towards Tavira and Cabanas. Also in this issue we visit Karting Almancil. An adrenaline filled fun day for couples, families or large groups, there's something for everyone, any age! I took my three boys there one (slightly damp) Saturday afternoon. It's safe to say they had a blast!Regular features include how to grow bulbs from Mark O'Shaughnessy, and a nostalgic look back at Keith Ashdown (literally). We say congratulations to Elle day Spa on their first year anniversary, introduce the brand new Womens success group, and have our fourth instalment from David Holland's quest to learn Portuguese. We hope you enjoy this issue!

Welcome...

EASTER AND PALm SuNDAY

This year Easter Sunday falls on the 20th April and Palm Sunday, the feast which commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, on the 13th April. The

Palm Sunday Procession starts from the Carmo Church in Tavira and proceeded through the streets of the riverside town before returning to the church. The nine litters of gilded wood illustrate the life of Christ from the Mount of Olives to his crucifixion. On Good Friday a torchlit procession will commence from the Church of Mercy in Tavira at 9.30pm with the route being illuminated by the light of hundreds of candles.

Vila Real de Santo António and Loulé in the running for top

tourism award T he President of São Brás de Alportel, Vitor Guerreiro has appointed a new support

service for their foreign population. In a city where 10% of residents are expatriates Alex Barcia with aid from Ian Lowe is helping with any problems you might have. Alex has previously worked as a volanteer for New York's 9/11 search and Rescue team, and more recently the São Brás de Alportel Bombeiros. Alex makes the most of his experience and connections to help in any way he can. Alex gave us an example of an English citizen living alone in São Brás who needed to travel to Coimbra for a heart valve replacement. Due to his illness he was unable to drive himself, and transportation by the Red Cross would have cost €1000. Alex offered to drive him to Coimbra, leaving the cost of expenses only. This is just one example of Alex's 'Can do' attitude.A meeting is held every Thursday morning at the São Brás Town Hall, everyone is welcome. Call Alex on 961 878 441 or 289 840 000.

Flatfoot (pes planus) is a condition that occurs when the arch or instep of the foot collapses or touches the standing surface. it is also

known as fallen arches or pronation of the feet.the human foot is made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. the arch of the foot is created by tightening of the muscles and various ligaments that support the bones of the arch as well as ligaments that run from the heel to the ball of the foot. the arches distribute weight evenly across the feet and up the legs, and can affect walking. a well-developed arch is balanced between rigidity (for stability) and flexibility (for adapting to surfaces).there are two types of flatfeet. Flexible flatfoot means that the

foot has some arch, even if it only appears when the person flexes the feet or stands on the toes. this is a normal condition that is generally painless and does not require treatment. stiff, inflexible, or painful flatfoot is an abnormal condition and may indicate a bone abnormality in the foot, a disease, or an injury.inCidenCe and preVaLenCeFlatfeet are a normal condition in infants and toddlers. this is partly the result of fatty deposits along the bottom of the foot that go away as the child grows. it is also because the ligaments in the foot have not fully developed. Flat-footedness in children is generally painless and does not interfere with walking or activity. in fact, as children learn to walk, the soft tissues in the foot tighten and form the arch. most children develop arches by late

Over the past few generations, perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors related to aging have changed. While past generations adopted a more passive, less involved view of aging, now people are taking a very active, complex, and deliberate approach to anti-aging.although men and women think about aging differently, both groups are motivated to look and feel younger as they age. however, the majority of anti-aging products and technologies on the market only deal with the signs of aging. nu skin addresses aging in a different way by tarGetinG the sOurces of aGinG, with patented technologies and exclusive product formulations designed to help you look and consequently feel younger longer. drop by the salon for a free skin analysis.

Spinal nerve stress (or osteopathic lesion) is a dangerous stressor. Osteopathic lesions cause

damage to our nervous and skeletal systems, fatiguingand weakening us both physically and emotionally. Our

ability to deal with life's stress is thus compromised, and this paves the way for sickness and disease.

An osteopathic health care programme, by removing vertebral lesions from our bodies, improves the

function of our nervous system and promotes better adaptation to environmental stresswhether physical or psychological. Osteopathic carealso promotes relaxation and self-awareness, thus

assisting the individual in the recognition and control ofstressful situations.

FOCuS ON A trip toCachopo

Page 15: April 14 East Algarve Magazine

15 www.eastalgarvemag.com

Hidden away in the hills and valleys of the mountain range serra do caldeirão, cachopo is the most northerly of the tavira Parishes and one of the largest. it was originally known as “vale de cachopo” and is now considered to be the most

tradiitional village in the eastern algarve. this beautiful village sits in the serra do caldeirão mountains which separate the algarve region from the rest of Portugal.after just a few minutes of leaving the centre of tavira you will be in the glorious countryside. We took the short drive through the wonderful scenery climbing steadily along the mountain road. there are many places to stop and enjoy the fantastic views both out towards the beautiful coastline, as well as inland towards the north.this time of year you can enjoy the various wild flowers and take in the unspoilt beauty. there is a natural lake sign posted from the main road which is a great place to spend some time enjoying the peace and natural tranquility.the history books say the village once belonged to the crown and was already a parish as far back as 1535 at which time it came under the administration responsibility of the municipality of alcoutim. it became part of the tavira municipality in 1836. narrow cobble streets that haven’t changed for years gives the feel that time has stood still here.seeing how the upland folk live their daily lives gives us an insight into the cultural wealth and characteristic cheerful attitude of these people.the people of cachopo have maintained their local traditions and the crafts of the locality such as knitted garments and embroided lace which are still produced by the ladies of the town. the cachopo museum located in the town celebrates

Page 16: April 14 East Algarve Magazine

the history and traditions of the area and is well worth a visit. it can be found on rua matos casaca. Opening times :09.30 to 13.00 / 14.30 to 18.00 (these times are for guidance and can’t be guaranteed)win addition to the wonderful local crafts, local products such as wool, honey and cheese are produced on the local farms but probably the most important crop locally however is cork which is taken from the cork Oak tree (Quercus suber). the tree forms a thick, corky bark. Over time this bark can develop considerable thickness and this is harvested every 9-12 years as cork. cachopo’s highlights are the santo estevão (saint stephen) mother church, which stands at the top of the hill overlooking the narrow cobbled streets that make up the village. the “casas circulares” (round houses) and “Palheiros” (barns) are pre-historic stone houses that have been used by farmers. there are both the rural and modern windmills, and the “Fonte Férrea” that once was thought to be where the algarve’s rich people would visit for it’s medicinal powers and is now a leisure place, with a lovely snack park. there are several organized walking tours that you can take from the centre of town, to make the most of the amazing landscapes. this area is really the “other” algarve, near the alentejo region, very different from the touristic algarve of the golden beaches and crystalline waters, but filled with tradition, heritage and wonderful panoramas. We hope you get a chance to visit the area, the village is small but taking your time to enjoy the amazing views en route, it can be a great day trip and something a bit different to do. the tranquility and stunning scenery can be enjoyed by car, bike or foot.

Spring is in the air, a wonderful time of the year. it also means the annual spring clean is upon us, which is

especially important for those who want to sell their property. a well presented and maintained house sells quicker and is more likely to achieve a higher price. if you are not living here or are unable to do this yourself, there are companies who can assist you with this.if there is ever a time to present your property at its best, it is now as the market is improving. the increase in the number of sales in 2013 is continuing at an accelerated pace in 2014. Pricing is still weak, but this seems to be only a matter of time. Once the market turns, the average price of a property can quickly rebound leaving would be buyers with the feeling that they missed the market. Few people realize that their pension plan(s) will not provide them with sufficient income to support their lifestyle once they are retired as many pension plans are underfunded. the netherlands is a country which is praised for having one of the best funded pension plans in the world. nevertheless, various pension schemes in the

netherlands saw the need to reduce the pension of retirees due to the crisis which brought lower returns (on investment) and an increase in longevity that had not been budgeted for. People need to be more aware that pensions are not what they used to be. You need to have a plan in order to achieve more than one source of income when you are retired. as with all investments, you need to diversify. having part of your assets in property makes sense, especially if you buy for the long run when you are in your twenties or thirties. it starts with owning the house you live in. a second home should not be bought on your personal preferences if you seek a good investment to support your lifestyle once you are retired, but it should be bought without emotional attachment on the sole basis of the financial return you will get from it. the pension system in Portugal in particular is vulnerable. efforts to ease this burden have failed, as it needs a change of the constitution. One cannot help but think that of the 200.000 young professionals who left the country over the past two years in search of employment elsewhere in europe that some may also have left because they do not

want to contribute to a system that is unsustainable.if you are currently trying to sell your home, there is a good chance that it has been on the market for some time. buyers are spoiled for choice, so make sure yours stands out. in addition to the spring clean and the removal of all clutter take a good, hard look at the outside of your property. We all know curb appeal is important. tidy up the gardens where needed, paint/repair the fence, remove old building materials and clutter. the outside woodwork should be in good condition and if this is not the case, i’m afraid you should get it repaired and repainted. try to spruce up the garden the day prior to the viewing. With an improving market, this can be the year that you succeed in selling your property.

One quarter of a year in tavira. naturally gone in a flash, a good life. On the portuguese language front not all bad; reading

now above average, writing (never attempted!) but would probably be fair/to good, oral portuguese slow and shy with english accent, comprehension of the language as spoken by the Portuguese still at beginner level.Pronunciation . Progress made with the tricky nasal sounds as in the endings ‘am,’ ‘em,’ção and ções. however inability to pronounce correctly the letter ‘r’ persists. to get my ‘r’s in gear have resorted, at the suggestion of a sympathetic portuguese acquaintance, to a daily recital of the following ,‘o rato roeu a rolha da garrafa de rum do rei da rússia.’ this serves a similar purpose to the tongue twister ‘round and round the rugged rocks the ragged rascal ran,’ although the portuguese version translates to something like ‘the mouse nibbled the cork in the king of russia’s bottle of rum!’ Way Forward.

Focus more on listening to spoken portuguese. continue to increase vocabulary by highlighting a subject of interest each month and go for it. Whether described as the food of love, ‘o alimento do amor,’ or the love of food, ‘o amor de alimento,’ this theme seemed like a good starter. First words learned in this category related to seafood ‘frutos do mar’ and included the ubiquitous cod ‘bacalhau,’ clams and mussels ‘amêijoas e mexilhões’ and sea bass ‘robalo.’close behind followed vegetables ‘legumes’ of great variety as batatas, cebolas, cenouras, couve-flor, and ervilhas.‘Garfo’ is fork and ‘faca’ (no cedilla, thus pronounced faka) is knife and not the other way round as i had originally assumed. On the other hand the word for apple is maçã with a soft c plus a stressed last syllable.this same word without the accents ie maca is Portuguese for ‘stretcher.’ accents again to the fore.some things never change and it was heartening to note that the way the

romans expressed love in their native tongue latin was almost identical to modern portuguese cf. From the latin verb amare-amo, amas, amat, amamus amatis, amant with the portuguese amar-amo, amas, ama, amamos amais, amam!caesar’s observation that ‘i came, i saw, i conquered,’ likewise bears an uncanny resemblance to modern portuguese: cf. veni, vidi, vici with the portuguese vim, vi, venci.month 5 awaits and will take a look at the vocabulary of drink to complement this month’s food.

Summer and autumn flowering bulbs provide another dimension to gardening. they add beauty and interest to

the landscape and, since most of them are tender, they offer a unique challenge to the gardener. there are a large number of different types of bulbs, offering variations in forms, fragrances, colours, and lasting brilliance which many summer annuals cannot achieve. When choosing "bulbs," one must always be aware of a few basic terms. not all grow from true bulbs; some grow from rhizomes (canna), corms (Gladiolus), or tuberous-roots (dahlia). botanically, there is a difference, but this is generally important only to the scientist. the everyday usage of the term "bulb" includes all plants that grow from fleshy underground storage organs. the most important difference which must be understood is the distinction between hardy and tender bulbs. in Portugal, hardy bulbs (daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, lilies) over-winter in the ground, while most tender bulbs (Gladiolius, caladiums, tuberous begonias) in england are either dug after the first frost or the containers are brought indoors, can now also be left outside. When landscaping with summer and autumn flowering bulbs, special attention must be given to the design. as with most annual flower beds, they are planted in late spring and usually renovated every year. during the winter months, a mulch is spread over the bare ground. design the area to incorporate woody ornamentals which offer a landscape interest when the bulbs are not flowering. Favourite uses of these bulbs are in: borders, ground covers, rock gardens, and especially in containers and hanging baskets. most summer flowering bulbs are not suggested for "perennializing" because they do not overwinter

and they are considered somewhat "formal." rhizomous iris, lilies, and daylilies are notable exceptions. the following are examples of the eight of the most popular summer and fall flowering bulbs and their cultural and storage requirements:CaLadiums are tropical plants with heart-shaped leaves ranging in size from 6 to 12 inches. the numerous cultivars offer foliage colours in red, salmon, rose, white, or green with many variegated combinations. caladiums prefer a rich soil and shade. Grown mostly for their interesting foliage display, caladiums perform well in garden borders and containers. Fertilize them once a month. One additional note: most cultivars are adapted to full shade, but many selections tolerate partial sun or early morning sunlight. Full sun generally reduces the intensity of the foliage colour of most cultivars.Cannas are popular among home gardeners and professional landscapers because of their extended flowering period and luxurious green or bronze foliage. there are over 60 cultivars available, providing a wide choice of colours. the rhizomes are generally planted the first of may in a rich well-drained soil, and in an area which receives full sun for at least 6 hours per day. Plant with only about an inch of soil over the rhizomes and set them 18 to 24 inches apart. daHLias are generally associated with late summer to early autumn flowering periods but they can, however, be flowered earlier. dahlias prefer full sun to partial shade and a rich, well drained soil. they require ample water during the summer, especially during periods of drought. Once started, be certain to keep them actively growing. some dahlias require staking, as heights up to 7 feet are not uncommon. Flowers range from 3 to 12 inches in diameter and there are many shapes and colours available.

a good pest control (insect and disease) program will enhance the success of dahlias. they are excellent as fresh cut flowers for the homeowner. it should be noted that seed grown dahlias are not very heat tolerant. also, they tend to lack uniformity in growth habit and flower colour display. dayLiLies (hemerocallis -- Greek meaning "beautiful for a day") are among the most popular and easiest bulbs to grow. One can have a flower display from early on summer to early winter by using average garden soil, full sun to partial shade, an early summer application of fertilizer, and a range of cultivars. currently there are over 12,000 registered cultivars representing almost the entire spectrum of the rainbow (Pure blue and pure white are the only two colours not available.). daylilies are excellent for use in the perennial garden as taller background plants, in naturalized settings, or even the cutting garden. Propagation is usually by division of clumps either in the autumn or early spring using plantings that are 2 to 3 years old. each clump should have 3 shoots with an adequate amount of fibrous roots. they range in height from 12 inches to 4 ft. the flowers are borne on a leafless stem called a scape.gLadioLi are a gardener's delight because they are easy to grow and offer a wide spectrum of colours. When planting times are staggered (weekly), they will flower over the entire summer. corms can be planted outdoors starting in early may. Planting depth to base of the corms is 4 to 6 inches. use a well-drained soil and plant them 6 to 8 inches apart. many gardeners like to plant in rows -- if so, the rows should be approximately 36 inches apart..LiLies (lilium spp.) are excellent bulbs for the summer garden. there are about 80 species and several hundred cultivars available. they range in height from 2 to 8 ft. they are available in white, yellow, red, pink, orange, maroon, and various bicolour. they require a well-drained area that receives plenty of sunlight and need to be kept moist. they can be planted either in the fall or spring. either time is satisfactory; it only depends on the availability of the bulbs. space them 6 to 10 inches apart. With the exception of lilium candidum (madonna lily),

which should be planted with only 1 inch of soil covering the bulb, lilies should be planted with 4 to 5 inches of soil covering the bulb. this allows them to form stem roots. tall lilies may need to be staked and should be protected from high winds. For most lilies, the ph should be about 6.5. aphids and thrips can be pests.rHizomatous iris (iris spp.) is one of the easiest to bulbous plants for the garden. there are many species including: Yellow Flag iris, siberian iris, blue Flag iris, Japanese iris, crested iris and black iris. there are 6- to 8-inch dwarf types and 3- to 4-ft tall types. they come in all colours (solid and bicolour) except red. most species require a well-drained soil and only an occasional fertilization. they can be planted in the autumn or spring depending on the availability of the rhizomes. Plant them with 1 to 2 inches of soil covering the rhizomes. they grow best in full sun, but do quite well in

light shade. rhizomatous iris tends to grow and perennialize rapidly and they need to be separated every 4 to 5 years.tuBerous Begonias are one of the most spectacular of the summer flowering bulbs. colours range from soft pastels to brilliant and electric solid colours. they can be used as bedding plants, in hanging baskets, or simply as flowers around trees in home lawns. tuberous begonias are

somewhat temperamental because they do not tolerate stresses. they dislike strong winds and require good air drainage. they need to be well watered, but do not like moisture on the foliage. they don't flower well in either full sun or dense shade if not properly watered. incorporate a rich, organic loam into well-drained topsoil. Plant the enlarged hypocotyls (also called tubers) after the last chance of frost.

the top of the hypocotyl should be at soil level. Place containers in partial shade. Water when soil shows signs of drying, preferably in the morning hours. no garden is truly ever complete without the addition of these m a g n i f i c e n t flowers and you will appreciate in no time the enhanced colour they bring to your borders.

Last year saw the biggest tax hikes in modern history come into effect in Portugal, considerably increasing the

On top of this, a solidarity tax of 2.5% is charged for income over €80,000, increasing to 5% for income above €250,000.this means that the top rate of income tax in Portugal is 56.5%. a solidarity contribution of between 2.5% and 50% for pension income continues into 2014. inVestment inCome:the flat rate of tax applied to interest, dividends, capital gains etc. is 28%, the same as last year.residents can continue to opt for the scale rates of tax instead, but if you choose this for one source of income, it must apply to all sources.rental income is also taxed at 28%, and residents can have it taxed as income tax. inCome From ‘BLaCk Listed JurisdiCtions’Portugal publishes a list of

What Affects Exchange rates?

The Pound had steadily fallen against the euro during the course of march and settled between a range of 1.19

and 1.20. every time we neared the 1.20 mark the rate fell away again. the markets had expected this trend to continue and then the uK retails sales figures were released that were significantly better than expectations causing the rate to rise towards the 1.21 mark again.Whilst this is positive news it must be viewed with a degree of caution as we have seen these spikes before. unless there are sustained and consistent signs of recovery it is unlikely that we will see the further increases. both the bank of england and the european central bank have confirmed that they do not want their respective currencies gaining too much in strength as it will hamper growth. unemployment needs to fall and productivity increase before the bank of england will consider relaxing their control.this shows the volatility of the currency markets and how they react to economic news. so what

else influences exchange rates? there are many economic factors; inflation, interest rates, public debt, that impact upon exchange rates but also political developments can influence them too. For example, if there is political unrest in a particular country then investors may show their caution by selling that currency and favouring another as a safe haven until the situation is clearer. With increased demand the other currency may strengthen and the exchange rate can rise. likewise, reduced demand will see a rate fall. With the markets constantly moving it is always wise to seek some guidance from your currency exchange broker. they will confirm current market conditions and explain what options are available to you. not only will you be offered a more competitive exchange rate than the bank but you will also have the opportunity to protect yourself against a falling exchange rate, maximising your funds. advice is free and with no obligation!although i frequently talk about the sterling to euro exchange rate, and

vice versa, you can use a currency exchange broker to send money, in most tradable currencies, to another bank account anywhere in the world. this can be useful if you need to pay for goods or services in another currency. You can send funds to friends or family overseas. some of my clients have done this when making extended trips overseas. remember there are no limits on the amount you can transfer so you send as little or as much as you like. For even greater flexibility you can request your transfers via our online trading system at a time that is convenient for you. benefit from live exchange rates so you can see exactly how much you will need to send or receive.if you have any questions or would like to discuss currency exchange generally then feel free to contact me.

Property owners are now receiving their imi bills so it's a good time to remember how this works.

since last year, Portuguese Government has set new legislation in order to soften the payment of the council tax - imi as this in most cases has increased, due to the revaluation of all properties in Portugal.since 2013 the council tax – imi bills above 500€ per co-owner will have the option to be paid in three installments: in april, July and november. according to the payment rules, imi tax notifications are issued as follows:a) Property owners with imi lower than 250 euros, single payment in april;b) Property owners with imi between 250 euros and 500 euros, can pay in 2 installments, half in april and half in november;c) Property owners with imi above 500 euros, will be able to pay in 3 equal installments in april, July and november.by law imi rates for 2014 vary between 0,3% and 0,5% and are published by each council by the end of the year. For instance the imi rates that are now starting to be received, had been published by the end of 2012 as the imi is always paid

at the end of the following year.it’s also important to remember that the person responsible for the payment of this tax, is the owner of the property at 31st december of the previous year. For instance, if you have bought a property since the 1st of Janaury 2014, your first imi payment will be due in 2015. however if you bought the property still in 2013, this means that your first imi payments will be this year, starting in april 2014. it also means that the imi is due in full by the owner of the property, this means that the person owning the property on the 31st december, will pay the imi for the full year, irrespective of the date they bought the property.in the past the rateable value of the properties was very low and in general there was a huge discrepancy between the rateable and market value of the properties. to rectify this situation and increase tax revenues, the Portuguese tax authorities implemented in 2003 a deep reform to property tax laws which has resulted in the gradual increase of the rateable value, of all properties, bringing them more in line with actual market values and consequently increasing taxes

payable and reducing and controlling tax evasion.to update the rateable value of properties the legislator created a formula in which the new rateable value of the properties is more objectively calculated and achieved:vPt = vc x a x ca x ci x cq x cv, where:vPt = rateable value attributed by tax authorities to the property ; vc = base value of properties built (value of construction per sq m fixed annually by tax authorities plus value of sq m of implantation ground 25% of such value) – presently 1603; a = Gross area of construction – sum of the total area of construction including terraces, garage, parking places and storages; ca = Purpose of the property i.e. commerce, services, residential; ci = location – coefficient fixed every three years by the municipality and can vary between 0,4 and 3,5; cq = Quality and comfort – factors that can increase or decrease the value like existence of swimming pool or non-existence of lift in a building with more than three floors;cv = (vetustez) age criteria applicable in accordance with age of the property. Older properties lower coefficient;

Heat of the moment introduce a new range of ultra-efficient wood burners!

Free standing wood burning stoves (salamandras).the phrase that possibly originated with General

George Washington during the american War of independence “more than you can shake a stick at” is one ideally suited to describe the vast range of salamandras now available from our renowned italian manufacturer. With versions providing heat outputs of six, nine, or twelve kilowatts and all available in seventeen different shapes, with various cosmetic and material finishes. they come with either naturally convected heat output as standard or a fan assisted convection as an optional extra. these wood burners provide something to meet with most people’s requirements.beautiful high quality stoves with efficiencies as high as 83.5% feature a new and patented refractory lining for optimum combustion conditions and long working life together with high thermal output and low environmental impact and with the linings pale colour it enhances the glow and appearance of the flames! Finally the control of the combustion is achieved using a simple front mounted control lever with three settings:• ignition phase• normal use at nominal output• Long lasting mode – with a burn of up to 4 hours with a load of just 3.5Kg of wood, dependent upon

type and moisture content.the pictures give just a snapshot of the models available!this product line availability gives rise to an interesting question for those people who would like to install such a machine and like us live in a house with a conventional type fireplace and chimney breast. - Where would it go?unlike 99.9% of british homes, the fireplace and chimney breast in Portuguese houses are not structural elements of the building (with the exception of the older stone built Quintas, casas and casinas) and so can be removed with relative ease and at very reasonable cost!this removal process provides a number of benefits including an increase in available floor and wall space, increased heating efficiency and lower fuel bills as the structure that absorbs a good percentage of the heat that the fire produces is no longer an impediment!next month we will look at the technological and style advancements in insert type wood burners For more information please contact:

All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.

Two away defeats - Estoril (4-0); Arouca (2-0) - and two home draws - Belenenses (0-0); National (1-1) - have kept the Olhão based

outfit firmly anchored in the relegation zone. Despite missing seven players, through suspension and injury, there were encouraging signs in the game against fifth placed Nacional. Keeper Belec was in stunning form and made two miraculous saves; Koldrup stood firm at the heart of the defence; Obodo and Lucas Souza worked tirelessly in midfield and centre-forward Dionisi chased every ball as he ploughed a lone furrow upfront. Against the run of play it was the Madeira side who took the lead six minutes before the interval when Mario Rondon headed home. Two minutes later and the home side were level. The industrious Dionisi was tripped in the penalty area and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Up stepped the Italian striker to

net low into the bottom corner. How referee Artur Soares Dias failed to award Olhanense a second penalty only he will know. A blatant handball was clearly seen by the crowd of 2,105 who looked on in disbelief. The Algarve side now have tough games at home to SC Braga - Saturday 5th April kick-off 6.00pm - and away to Rio Ave before facing Benfica and Porto in consecutive games! There will be coaches going to Lisbon, from Olhão, for the game with Benfica over the Easter Weekend (18th/21st April). If Sporting and Benfica have both won their three previous games then victory for The Eagles over the Algarveans will see them crowned as Champions. FC Porto are the visitors to the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão on the weekend of the 3rd/4th May for the last home game of the season.reLegation & promotionBoavista was relegated in June 2008 to the 2nd Division due to intimidation of referees, through its involvement in the

Apito Dourado* scandal. In June last year, after a long legal battle, Boavista was reinstated to the Premiera Liga for the 2014-15 season and the league will be increased from 16 to 18 teams. Only the bottom side in the top flight will be relegated whilst the second from bottom will play-off against the third qualifying team in the 2nd Division. Currently that would be Portimonense (Portimão). *The Apito Dourado (Golden Whistle) affair was a corruption sports scandal that came to light in 2004. Portuguese Judiciary Police investigators named several football personalities as suspects of corrupting or attempting to corrupt referees, including Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, chairman of Porto and the former Boavista chairman and Portuguese League President Valentim Loureiro. In March 2008, Porto's Tribunal de Instrução Criminal decided that the case concerning a match between

Porto and Beira-Mar, where Pinto da Costa allegedly delivered an envelope containing €2,500 to the referee, would proceed to trial. The other major case involving Porto and Pinto da Costa, regarding a match between FC Porto and E.Amadora, where Porto allegedly offered prostitutes to the match referees, was dismissed. In July 2008, Valentim Loureiro was found guilty of abuse of power but not guilty of corruption. He was sentenced to three years of suspended jail time. In 2008 the Portuguese League Disciplinary Committee, which had opened a parallel non-criminal proceeding called Apito Final (Final Whistle) sentenced Pinto da Costa to a two year suspension and FC Porto was docked six championship points for attempted bribery, something that didn't prevent Porto from winning the title that year. Boavista was sentenced to relegation for bribery and referee coercion which has subsequently been overruled and hence their reinstatement, from 3rd Division obscurity, to the Premiera Liga.mundiaLito 2014 youtH tournamentThe 21st Annual Youth International

The game was ended after six minutes following fans being crushed in the Liverpool end of Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium. Verdicts of accidental death from the original Hillsborough inquest in March 1991 were quashed in December 2012. Thirteen retired or serving police officers have now been identified as "suspects" in the continuing investigation into the

police cover-up after the disaster, the Independent Police Complaints Commission said recently. The news emerged on the eve of the opening of inquests at the end of March. The IPCC is investigating allegations surrounding the alleged cover-up by police including evidence that statements were doctored. The linked criminal investigation under retired chief constable Jon Stoddart is examining the events that led up to the disaster, including crimes of manslaughter.
