The sister program to the current format of the Daily Dose, as it is called, was put in place in 2004 in what was then the Utah-Provo South mission. At that time 600 missionaries were involved in teach-ing English twice a week in group classes at area LDS churches. As the recession took hold, more of those participating in the classes were struggling to afford gas to come to the meetings and many of them had picked up additional jobs in the evenings, making it difficult to attend. Last July, the church began offering the classes in people’s homes and interest in the program surged. “The second we introduced it as, ‘we can come to you,’ it blossomed,” Rhoades said. Daily Dose is currently a statewide program, however the LDS Church has decided to expand it nation-wide in the near future, Rhoades said. In addition to teaching a language, the format of the Daily Dose is structured to instill confidence in the pupils so they will be comfortable engaging in English conversations. “Building their self confidence is what it’s all about,” Rhoades said. “Once a person believes they de-serve something good — like being able to speak English — they’ll be able to do it.” Although the majority of the people participating in the program speak Spanish as their first language, the Daily Dose is not limited to that population. Currently missionaries in the area are teaching people of Polynesian, Chinese, Japanese and Brazilian backgrounds, Rhoades said. At the end of 24 weeks the students are not fluent, but should have a grasp on “the essential things.” “I try to practice the things they teach me and I think I get a little bit better,” Soto says. Latter-day Saint couples interested in serving this type of a mission should discuss it with their ecclesiastical leader. To find out more about receiving English lessons at home, contact Jim Rhoades at 817- 6422.

You could be eligible to get more money back from the IRS – as much as $5,751. If you earned less than $49,078 (married filing jointly) from wages, self-employment or farming last year, you may qualify for a refundable tax credit called the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. But you must file a federal income tax return claiming the credit to get it.
EITC can be a big financial boost for working people hit by hard economic times. Many individuals who saw their incomes drop in 2010 may qualify for the first time. Unlike other tax credits, both EITC eligibility and the amount of the credit is based on several factors such as the source and amount of your income, or combined incomes if married, whether you have qualifying children and how many. Workers without children also may qualify.
The amount of the credit peaks then phases out at certain income limitations depending on filing status and other factors. You may qualify for EITC even if you had no federal tax withheld or are not

otherwise required to file.
The online EITC Assistant at www.irs.gov/eitc can help determine your eligibility and estimate the amount of your credit. Free help preparing your return and claiming EITC is available at volunteer income tax assistance sites and IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers. To locate a volunteer site, call 211 or call the IRS at 1-800-906-9887.
Remember: if you are eligible, you must file a federal income tax return, even if you are not otherwise required to file, and you must specifically claim the credit to get it. Find more information about EITC at www.irs.gov or in your tax software
