Triathlon’s swim-bike-run combination is a great way to get in all around shape, says Triathlon New Brunswick past president John Russell. He says the sport ―lends itself to a mentality of health,‖ and, because of its three-sport nature, doesn’t overtax any one part of the body. The PSO is working on promoting Triathlon in New Brunswick and encouraging newcomers to get in-

volved, especially at the grassroots level, says Russell. Tri NB has been running weekend courses designed to help people interested in starting up clubs and coaching in their communities. Right now, Tri NB’s website only lists two clubs – Saint John-based Fundy Extreme and Moncton’s South East Storm. While Triathlon might be perceived as an individual activity, Russell says more clubs and coaches will make the sport more accessible to newcomers. Tri NB representatives are also present at every race, says Russell, to help make events professional and fun. They bring official signage and play music at the sites. ―A lot of people come to races alone because whoever comes with you is going to be standing around for a few hours,‖ Russell says. The or-ganization wants to make events family-oriented and welcoming. Russell emphasized how important volunteers, race directors, and board members are to the organization’s success, saying that he wanted to thank them ―as often and as publicly as possible.‖ There are races almost weekly in New Brunswick during the summer months, according to Tri NB’s web calendar.

It is time once again to nominate those in your community, organization or institution who are deserving of induction into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. Election to the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame is the ultimate honour for an athlete, team or sports builder. It is conferred on only the most outstanding and deserving, and it represents lasting recognition of their accomplishments and a secure place in New Brunswick’s sports history. There are many deserving candidates who have not yet been nominated, and I urge your municipality, organization or institution to prepare and submit a nomination on their behalf. Eligible candidates include individual athletes and teams whose achievements in high performance sport have brought distinction to our province; and builders (e.g. coaches, officials or administrators) who have made a significant contribution to the development of high performance sport in New Brunswick. There is also the Veterans’ Category for those whose athletic achievements and contributions were in an earlier era. Up to six candidates, including one from the Veterans’ Category, will be inducted at the annual dinner and induction ceremony to be held in Caraquet on May 28, 2011.
