IDF-ISA Operation Targets Senior Salast Terror Organization Operative in theGaza Strip

SeniorArmyofIslamOperative,IslamYasin,waskilledduringanIDF-ISAoperationWednesday(Nov.17),YasinheavilyinvolvedinplanninganddirectingterrorattacksagainstIsraelis.

InajointIDF-ISAoperationinthenorthernGazaStrip,forcestargetedasenioroperativefromtheArmyofIslamterrororganizationonWednesday(Nov.17).Duringtheoperation,

theoperative,Jabalia(GazaStrip)residentIslamYasin(born1975),waskilled.

IslamYasinwas a senior operative in theArmy of Islam terror organization and anassistantclosetotheheadoftheterroristgroup,MamtazDur'mush.Mostrecently,YasinhadbeenpersonallyinvolvedinplanninganddirectingaterrorattackinwhichIsraeliswouldbekidnappedfromtheSinaiPeninsula.

YasinworkedcloselywithMuhammadJamalFaresNamnam,killedinatargetedIDF-ISAoperationonNov.3rd,whowasalsoinvolvedintheattacknotedabove.Itisimportanttonote that despite the targeted attackonNamnam, the teroristcell has continued

operatingwiththeintentionofexecutingtheattack.

Bodies of F-16I Crew Members Identied

OnWednesdaynight(Nov.10),anIAFghterjetcrashedina crater in southern Israel during routine training. The crewmember'sbodieshavebeenfoundandidentied.

Identication of the bodies of Maj. Amichay Itkis and Maj.Emanuel Levy,crewmembers of theF-16I ghterjetwhich

crashedonWednesdaynight(Nov.10)attheRamonCrater,hasbeencompleted.Thefamiliesofthepilotandnavigatorhavebeennotied.

A two-seater F-16I ghter jet (dubbed Soufa, or storm) crashed at the RamonCrater(southernIsrael)duringtrainingonWednesdaynight(Nov.10).Searchandrescueforceswereimmediatelycalledtotheareaandbeganconductingextensivesearchesfortheplaneanditstwocrewmembers.

Thejet'sblackbox(aightrecorder)wasdisoveredduringsearchesonThursday(Nov.11)andhasbeensenttoaUSlabforresearchinanefforttounderstandthecauseofthecrashusingitsrecordedmaterial.

The Crash

Air ForceChiefofStaff, Brig. Gen.Nimrod Shefer,saidonThursday(Nov.11)that“thecrewwhichewtheSoufajetthatcrashedlastnightwasaveterancrew, able and experienced, which wetrust fully.”AccordingtotheBrig.Gen.,“Maj.Itkiswasconsidered

an experienced pilot very familiar with the Soufa jetandthenavigator, too,Maj.Levy,wasoneofitsrstnavigators.”

IAFCommanderMaj.Gen.IdoNechushtan,membersoftheMilitaryRabbinateandrepresentativesfromtheRamonAirbasearrivedatthecrashsitemid-dayonThursday.Thecrew'ssquadroncommanderandthecommanderofRamonAirbasepresentedMaj.Gen.Nechushtanongoingdevelopmentsofthesearchatthecrashsite.

IAFCommanderMaj.Gen.IdoNechushtan,orderedaninvestigationcommitteetobe

formedonWednesday(Nov.10)andheadedbyanofcerwiththerankofColoneltoexaminecircumstancesfortheevent.Inaddition,theIAF Commander has ordered a stop to alltrainingforSoufajets.

IDF Thwarts an Attempted Stabbing in the Gush Etzion Juncture

The IDFthwartedanattemptedstabbingbyaPalestinian intheGushEtzion junctureonThursday(Nov.25),nottherstinthearealadenwithdailyconicts.

IDFforcesfromcombatKrBrigadethwartedanattemptedstabbingintheGushEtzionjunctureonThursday(Nov.25)whenaPalestinianmantriedtostabciviliansinthearea.TheforcesstoppedthePalestinianandconscatedhisknife.ThePalestinianwastransferredovertoIsraelPolice.

Ayearago,anIsraeliwomanwaslightlytomoderatelywoundedinastabbinginthesameareawhenaterroristarmedwithaknifeapproachedherasshewaitedattheGushEtzionjuncture’sbusstop.Theterroriststabbedthewomaninherback,woundingherandeeingthescenerightaway.IDFforcesimmediatelybeganasearchfortheterrorist,puttinguproadblocksinthearea.

TheGushEtzion juncture is a central one connecting communities inGushEtzion,EfratandHebronandtheroadcomingfromBeitShemesh.Theregionisoneof thoseconstantlyunderthreat intheJudeaandSamariaregion,the

 juncture seeingdaily conictsbetween Israeli civiliansandPalestinians. IDFforcesareconstantlypresentinthejuncture,standingatnumerouslookoutandsecuritypointseveryhouroftheday.

Capt.(res.)EzraLakiatalksabouthisexperienceghtingterroristsinthesecondintifadaandhismostrecentinjury

duringashootingonthenorthernborder.

Thesedays,EzraLakiaislearningtowalkagain.Likehisyoungson,Yoav,hewalksslowlyonthegrassyknollsof

KfarHaRifontheborderofShfelaandtheCoastalPlain–testingeverystep,goingalongwithhisfeetbeingpushed

tothegroundandcomingbackup,adapting.

AtthebeginningofAugustof2010,Capt.(res.)Lakiawascalledforreservedutyinthenorthernborder.Thebattalion’sforces,underbattalioncommanderLt.Col.(res.)DovHarari,wereaskedtoguardbushcuttingactivitiesaroundthe

securityfencenearKibbutzMisgav-Am–andwasinjuredinaplannedambushbysnipersfromtheLebaneseArmy.

Lt.Col.HarariwaskilledonthespotandLakia–standingjustmetersaway,washeavilyinjuredfromshrapnelthat

penetratedhisentirebody.

Today,despitehisbody’srefusal,heghtstodophysicalactivityeverydayandgetbackincontrol.“Thefactthat

ofcerswerehurtdoingthistaskisnotinconsequential,thisisthesituationintheIDF,ofcersmarchaheadinfront

ofeveryone,”saysLakia.“InthiscaseIdidn’teventellmywifeIgotinjuredduringmilitaryactivity,soshewouldn’t

worryandacttoohastilypossiblycausingasaccident.ItoldherIfellonastoneandithurtabit,andthat’swhyI

wasonthewaytothehospitalinHaifa.”

ThecalculatedwayLakiaactsistheresultofrichoperationalexperience.Theshockingeventwhichtookplacethissummerwasn’thisrstclose-rangeencounter.Eightyearsago,whenhewasdeputycompanycommanderinthe

HaruvbattalionoftheKrBrigade,hegotridoftwoterroristsnearKfarTzaraintheSamariaregionandleadforces

tostopanother.Thankstotheprofessionalism,leadershipandbraverywhichheexhibitedduringtheattack,Lakia

receivedthe162nddivisioncommander’scitation(decorationsawardedtothosewhoexhibitextraordinarybehavior).

Theyear2002waslledwithterroristattacksfrighteningcitizensintheentirecountry.Thosedayssawa record

numberofattacksduringtheintifadaandLakia,thenalieutenantinhisregularmilitaryservice,realizedhewas

giventheresponsibilityofstoppingattacksoninnocentciviliansaswell.“OnJuly21stofthatyearaterribleattack

tookplaceintheImmanuelcommunitywhenabombwasdetonatedonabus,takingthelivesofnineinnocent

people,”heremembers.“Asaresultoftheattackitwasdecided,usingintelligencewehadthatmybattalionwould

‘close’theareaaroundKfarTzara.Weunderstoodthatagroupofterroristswasstillinthearea,planninganother

attackandwestartedlookingforit.”

“Fortwodayswesearchedtheentiredivision,weturnedeveryrockanddidn’tndanything.OnJuly23rd,around

7a.m.,westarteddoinganewsearch.Theysenttwoplatoonstothearea–onefromtheadvancecompany(the

rsttoenterabattleeld)andonefromtheassistingcompany–andIcommandedthelatter.Wewereaforceof

12peoplealtogether,buttheareainfrontofuswasdifculttosearchbecauseitwasopeneldswithterracesand

entanglementsameterhigh.

“Attheendofalonghourofsearchinginwhichwefoundnothing,wesawsuspiciousmovementhalfakilometerawayfrom

us.Wedidn’tknowwhatitwas,andwedidn’thaveincriminatingortangibleevidencetoknowforsureitwasterrorists.I

decidedtosplittheplatoonintotwoforces.WiththerstforceIwentoutinordertodoafullankingoftheareaandthe

secondforcewouldstayasbackupandmonitorourprogress.

“Thelookoutforcedirectedustoasuspiciousarea,thoughitstillwasn’tclearifitwasterroristsoroldtracks.Wecameto

apointveryclosetothearea,twentymetersaway,andstilldidn’tseeanything.Suddenlyoutofnowhere,reopenedon

usfromthebusheswithriesonautomatic(riesshootingnon-stop).Atthispointweunderstoodexactlywhowewereup

againstandinasecondopenedheavyreintheirdirection.

“Theassaultlastedtenseconds,duringwhichallactionsweredoneautomaticallyandexactlythewaywe’dtrained.Iwasn’tsurprisedthatalloursoldiersattackedperfectlyandreactedatlightingspeed.Duringanencounter-inordertosurprise-

thereissomethingimportantonemustdo,buttheterroristsdidn’tthinktodoitwisely.Thoughtheyopenedrerstandwe

weretakenbysurprise,ultimatelyallthreeterroristswerekilledandnooneonoursidewaskilledorinjured.Inmyopinion,

themainreasonforthis,asidefromtheadvantageofnumbersthatwehad,wasourabilitytoactquicklywithoutthinking

toomuch.Whenyou’redelayedyoucanloseprecioustimeandI’mpositivethatifweweredelayedbyjustafewseconds,

theeventwouldhaveendedcompletelydifferently.Attheendofthedayyoucouldsumuptheevenasadecisivevictory.

Lakia,who learnedfrompreviousexperience, couldnotyetsayit was theendoftheevent.He wanted tomakesure

thedangerwasindeedover.“Wewerejustmetersawayfromtheterroristsandwhenweapproachedtheirbodieswe

discoveredthatallthreewerearmedandwearingbombbelts.Oneevenhadamilitaryvest,”heremembers.“Wefound

lotsofmagazines,transistors,andcommunicationdeviceslikewalkie-talkiesonthem.Butwhatsurpriseduswasthatthey

wereequippedwithlargeamountsofwaterwhichtheyheldinwaterbottlesandcoolers,aswellassnacksanddriedfruit.

Weunderstoodtheseweren’tpeoplewhocametodoaquickshootingandbedonewithit,butagroupwhodidserious

planningaboutthestepsitwouldtake.Theirmissionwastokillasmanypeopleaspossible.Thetrackers,whofoundtheir

footprintslaterbackedupourassumptionsthattheyhadbeenintheareaalongtime.

“Whenwecameback,oursoldierswelcomeduswarmlyandtherewasasenseofpridethatwewereabletodothemission

wellandtodefeattheterrorists.Andstill,itwasn’tanythinghugeandbeautiful,wemostlywantedtoquicklygobacktothe

routineactivitieswealwaysdo.

“Usually,activityintheareaofShechemwasverydemandingandintense,butIloveditbecauseI’musedtodoingalot.

EvenaftertheeventmysoldiersandIdidn’thaveadullmomentoramomentofrest,andyoucouldn’teventalkabouta

realvacation.Wewentbacktoourareathesamedayandtheycalledustogoouttoanothermission–thatwastheroutineintheareathosedays.

“Sometimespeopleaskwhatheroismisinmyopinion,andIanswerthatasoldierwhowakeseverydayanddoesthesame

thingisahero,sometimesimportantactivitiesbutalwaysexhausting,andcanstillholdittogether.Toguardforeighthour

shiftswhichdon’tend,andthenfortheeighthoursof‘rest’dealwithtinythingswhichcomeupandwithsuddenwakeup

calls–that’srealheroisminmyeyes.Tokeepgoingandnotgiveup,toholdontooptimismandknowoursecuritysituation

needsalertnessandawarenessoflittledetails–thosearethecharacteristicsofahero.

“Ireallydon’tthinkI’maheroanddon’tlikethedescription.Whatwedidwedidasabattalion,andit’snotanactIcarried

outaloneinaheroicmatter.Itwaseveryone’sworkandthat’swhyallsoldiersleftwithafeelingofprideandaheadheld

high.Itwasn’tmyrstencounterwithagroupofterrorists,butitwasdenitelytheclosest–andwelaterdiscoveredthatthesamegroupofterroristscarriedoutshootingattacksontheroutenearImmanuel.Inmyopinion,thefactthattheterrorists

weren’tabletorunawayfromuseventhoughtheywereveryexperiencedwasasuccessoftheentirebattalion.

“TodayItrytobeoptimisticasmuchaspossible.It’sdifcultandfrustratingtogofromanintensiveroutineandnon-stop

activitytoastatewhereittakesyouhalfanhourtowalkashortdistance,butthat’slife.Igothroughphysiotherapyandtry

torecoverasfastasIcaninthebestwaypossible.It’simportanttotakeeverythinginproportionandtobelieveeverything

willbeok–andthat’swhatwillhappen.Rightnowit’shardandI’mgoingstircrazyandamdyingtostartdoingthingsthat

IdidbeforetheinjurybutIbelievethatdaywillcomesoon.”

Photos from the Battleeld: a New Course for Combat Soldiers

Combatsoldierswillnowtakepartinphotographylessons,enablingboththeirunitsandthearmyatlargetoshowviewersaroundtheworldimagesstraightfromthebattleeld.

WhilemostsoldiersintheEgozcombatunitaredoingexhaustingKravMaga(hand-to-handcombat)exercises,learningcamouagetechniquesandnavigatingmorningtonight,sixoftheirfriendsaretakingpartinsomethingcompletelydifferent.These

six soldiers, picked from their entire classwhichcompleted the combat course,will now sit in a classroom for one week learning about the aperture adjuster,propercomposition,shutterandspeed.No,there’snomistakehere-theseareallphotographyterms.AndtheseareEgozcombatsoldierslearningphotography.

Thecourse, taughtbyIDFeldphotographers fromtheSpokespersonunit,wascreatedinordertoteachtheseselectsoldiersthebasicsofphotography.Theresultswillbringauthenticfootageofoperationalactivitiesfromthesoldiers’pointsofview,theirphotosapotentiallyusefultoolforIsrael’seffortsinexplainingthearmy.Thecourselastsvedaysandisroutinelytaughtinallcombatbrigades,eachtimea

smallgroupofsoldiersbeingpickedfromeachunit.“Thegoalisthatineachplatoon,therewillbeaphotographer,”explains1stSgt.OrRodansky,aeldphotographerwhogivesthecourse.

Inadditiontothiscourse,everythreemonthsanadditionalcourseisputonintheGolaniBrigade’strainingbaseincludingasmanyas30soldiers.Thecourselaststwoweeks,thesoldierswhotakeithavingbeenspecicallychosen.“Thesortingprocessmainlyteststhesoldier’sbasicknowledgeofphotography,whetherornotheunderstands the subject,” explains1st Sgt. Rodansky. “In addition, therearedifferentprerequisiteslikethesoldier’spositionintheunitandhowmuchtimehehas

leftinhisservice.It’salwaysbettertochoosesoldierswhoareinthecenteroftheactionlikethosewhoshootorthosewhoworkcloselywiththebattalioncommanderandarethusontheeldrst.Soldierswewon’ttakecouldbesnipersorsoldierswhohavelessthanayearandeightmonthsleftintheirservice.”

TheEgozsoldierscurrentlytakingpartinthecoursewerenotsortedoutbutweresenttothecourseby their commanders. “This is therst time Iam doingphotographynot as anamateur,”saidSgt.Yoav.“Thecourseis importantbecausetheworldneedstoknowwhat’s

reallyhappeningonthebattleeld.FootagefromtheeldcanhelpIsrael’simageandit’salsoveryinteresting.”

It’sdifculttryingtoteachsomuchinsuchashortperiodoftime,sothefocusisplacedonseveraltopics.“It’simpossibletoteachfouryearsworthofmaterialinvedays,thereforeourmaingoalistopracticephotographingmostthingsandtofocusonwhat’sphotographicallyproblematicaboutasituation,”says1stSgt.Rodansky.DuringOperation Cast Lead, for example, combat soldiers took video footage ofa schoolbooby-trappedbyHamas.Butsoldierslmedonlythecablessurroundingtheschoolanddidnot capture footageof the actualbomb.Asa result, viewersdid not understand whatwas

problematicabouttheimagery.“Thisonlyproveshowimportantthecourseis,”says1stSgt.Rodansky.“If20%ofthetimesoldiersapply70%ofwhatthey’velearnedhereandcomeoutwithjustonegoodphoto,it’sworththeround-the-clocktrainingallyear.Theinuencethesephotoshaveishuge.”

intheeldofmedicine.ThecorpsisresponsibleforprovidingoptimalmedicaltreatmentforIDF

soldiersduringwar,ongoingsecuritydutyandinperiodsofcalm,promotinghealthwithinthe

IDFandadvancingmilitarymedicine.

Byvirtueofthisthemedicalcorpssetsmedicaltreatmentpolicyandmedicalassistancedoctrine

andbuildstheprofessionalsystematthevariouslevels.Overtheyearsthesystemhasbeen

perfectedandcurrentlyitprovidesatotalresponsethatincludesimagingsystems,treatment,

monitoringandtrainingatworldclasslevels.

The operational medical system in the IDF constitutes a qualitative elite unit of therapists

(physicians, paramedicsandmedics) united bya singlegoal-saving lives.Thecaregiver in

theeldcourageouslytakesquickdecisions,underpressure,inreal-timeandunderre.This

objectiveaccompaniesmedicalstaffpersonnelnotonlyinemergenciesbutalsoinroutineand

evenwhenoutofuniform.

In the IDF Medical Corps has invested many years in developing professional capability

whileadvancingknowhow,conductingmedicalresearch,stagingmanyexercisestosimulate

emergencysituations,usinginnovativetechnologiesandprovidingadvancedtrainingforallthe

professionalbodiesinthecorps.

ThePrinciplesofEmergencyMedicine:

Themedicalsystemoperatesonaconstantbasistopreserveitstnessforemergencysituations

andpromotingamedicalresponseonthebattleeldinordertosavethelivesofallwounded

whocanbesaved.

The principlesof medicalcare for saving the lives of thewounded,astheywereformulatedin thecorpscommand

andimpartedtoallthecaregivers,includearapidresponse

for treating life endangering wounds, while performing

resuscitationactivitiesandeldoperationsasneeded.After

gettingthewoundedpersonawayfromthedangersofthe

battleeldandprovidingpreliminarytreatment,thewounded

personistransferredtothesubsequenttreatmentechelons,

whereheisprovidedwithprogressivelyadvancedlevelsof

treatment.Interaliacompanymedicalunitsaredeployedonthebattleeldwhohaveemergencycarecapabilitiesaswell

assurgicalunitscapableofperformingoperationsusingadvancedsurgicaltechniques.

TheMedicalCorpsinsistsonpersistentlyimprovingthemedicalresponseawardedthewounded

andforthispurpose there isconstantdebriengon incidentsinvolvingwounds.Lessonsare

drawnandmedicalpolicyisupdated.Learninglessonsisacornerstoneofmedicalcorpsactivity

asaprogressiveorganizationthatisalwayslearning.verythelessonslearnedistoalsoserve

todirecttheresearchanddevelopmentofmethods,tooltoolsandnewtechnologiesinorderto

improvetreatmentofthewounded.

efcientevacuationofthewoundedfromthebattleeldsandassuringtheefcientsupplyofmedicalequipmenttotheforwardcombatexpanse.

TheTechnologiesEmployedbyEmergencyMedicine

TheMedicalCorpsemploysabroadvarietyofadvancedtechnologicaltoolsinordertoprovide

themostprofessionalresponseduringtimesofemergencyandroutine,andtocontendwith

themanychallengesinvolvedinthiswork.

Asanexampleonecannotethe"microrespirator"aprojectfordevelopingandequipping

thecorpswithnewrespirationdevices,intendedtoimprovethecapabilitiesforthearticial

respirationofthewoundedwhileimprovingsurvivabilityandfocusingonsavinglivesonthe

battleeld.

Thisisasmallandlightweight(about4kg)respiratorthatisportableandtransportablethat

wasdevelopedincollaborationbetweentheIDFMedicalCorpsandanAmericancompany

Onecanalsothecorps'equippingitselfwithaninnovativetourniquetwhichcanoneemployby

oneselfusingonehand.ThistourniquetIlikethehemostaticbandage,thatincludesmaterial

stimulatingbloodclottingandarrestingthebleeding,wasinitiallyemployedduringOperation

CastLead.

TheIDFMedicalCorpsIsInvolvedinDevelopingEvacuationDevices,BasedonAdvanced

Robotics.

Forexampleonecannote thedevelopmentofunmannedevacuationvehiclessuchas the

pilotlessmedicalhelicopterandtheunmannedvehicle.

Manymedical forcesparticipatedduringoperationCastLead includinga femalephysician

andfemaleparamedicswhoenteredtheareaoftheGazaStrip.

DuringtheoperationIDFMedicalCorpsforcesdeployedintheeldalongsidetheghting

forces, devotedly treated the wounded in the heartof the Gaza Stripand evacuated and

evacuatedthemspeedilytothehospitals.Theevacuationofthewoundedwasperformed

by various surface vehicles andhelicopters.The IsraelAir Force in coordination with the

medicalforcesandupontheirdemand,landedhelicoptersincludingunitsfromtheextrication

andrescueteamoftheIsraelAirForceinthecombatzoneswithintheGazaStrip.Itisself-

explanatorythatsuchlandingsinvolvegravedangerandthereforethedecisionwhetherto

requesthelicopterborneevacuationoutofthecombatarearequiresaprofessionaljudgment

onthepartofthecaregivingteams.

ofcommendationsforvalorfollowingoperationCastLeadwhen4outofthe8recipientsofthe

A Much Needed Increase in Doctors on the Field

Approximately50newdoctorswillcompleteamedicalcoursesettosubstantiallyincreasethenumberofIDFmedicalpersonnel.

TheMedicalCorpsheldatrainingexerciseonWednesday(Oct.27)concludingthebiggestMedics’CourseinIDFhistory.Approximately50newdoctorswillcompletethecoursenextweek,andwillbesenttotheirrespectiveair,seaandland-boundunits.

TheconcludingexerciseconstitutesanefforttoincreasethenumberofmuchneededdoctorsinIDFbattalions.Afterthecourse,eachbattalionwillhaveitsowndoctorwhenbefore,manybattalionshadonlyaparamedicoratemporarydoctor.

HeadMedicalOfcer,Brig.Gen.Dr.NachmanEsh,testedthedoctors-to-beandwishedtheparticipantswell.“Thesearemotivateddoctorswithasparkintheireye;theyarequaliedandwanttodotheirjobs.Thereisnodoubtthatfromnowon,withIDFunits’useofdoctors,allsoldierswhoneedmedicalattentionwillreceiveit.”

AseniorofcerintheMedicalCorpstoldIDFWebsitethatthenewbenetsinthedoctors’trainingprogram,includinghavingmoreoftheirtuitionreimbursedaswellascompensationandawidespreadcampaignsupportingtheessentialenlistmenttotheIDFmedicalsystem,werethemainreasonsforthenotableandmuchneededimprovement in themedicaleld.TheMedicalCorpsexpectsthat thenumberofdoctorsintheIDFwillfallbetweentheyears2013-2014,butwillriseagainintheyear2015,whenstudentsfromtheTzamerettrackoftheIDF’sMedicalSchoolareexpectedtonishtheirstudies.

Chief of Staff Grants Combat Soldier One of Highest Honors

The ChiefofStaff awarded the MedalofDistinguished Service toan Intelligence Corpsghterforhisactionsduringanoperation.Chiefof the GeneralStaff,Lt. Gen.GabiAshkenazi,granted the MedalofDistinguishedServicetoanIntelligenceCorpscombatsoldierinaspecial,privateceremonyathisIDFHeadquartersofce.

TheMedalofDistinguishedServicewasgiventothecombatsoldierforhisexemplaryactionsduringacomplexoperation.TheselectionwasexaminedandacceptedbyacondentialGeneralStaffcommittee.

TheChiefofStaff,Lt.Gen.GabiAshkenazi,spokeaboutthesecretoperationintheceremonysaying, “The operation was of the utmost importance to the security of Israel and wascarriedoutwithexcellencebeyondrecognition,breakingeveryboundandgoingfarbeyondexpectation.”TothewarriortheChiefofStaffsaid,“Ifeelhonoredtobeyourcommanderandthatofyourcolleagues.”

HeadoftheIntelligenceCorps,Maj.Gen.AmosYadlin,saidintheceremonythat“TheMedalofDistinguishedServicewasawardedtothecombatsoldierbecauseofhisdemeanor,bravery,determinationandsolefocusonthemission,allofwhichdenedexcellenceandservesasanexampletoallunknownwarriorsandotherswhomustkeeptheiridentitiessecret.”

IDF Championship Tests Combat Soldiers' Fitness

The IDF’schampionship for combat tness beganonThursday (Nov. 18) and will includenavigationtests,KravMaga(hand-to-handcombat),battalion-basedcompetitionsandmore.

TheIDF’schampionshipforcombattnessbeganonThursday(Nov.18)andisbeingheldattheWingateinstitute.TheChiefoftheGeneralStaff,Lt.Gen.GabiAshkenazi,madeanannouncementaboutthechampionshipsthreeweeksago,itbeingheldasawaytogaugethetnesslevelofcombatunitsintheIDF.

Thechampionshipincludesthefollowingcompetitions:navigationdrills,shootingafterphysicalexertion, Krav Maga (hand-to-hand combat), platoon-based competitions, squad-basedcompetitions,acompetitivetrekandanavalcompetition.Soldiersfromallcombatunitswillparticipateinthechampionship,whichwillbesplitintothreegroups:therstincludingsoldiersfrominfantryunits,instructionbases,brigadetrainingbases,battalionsoftheInfantryCorps,FieldIntelligenceandtheShayetetMissileShips.ThesecondgroupincludessoldiersfromtheArmoredCorps,ArtilleryCorps,Anti-Aircraftunit,IntelligenceCorps,HomeFrontCommand,MilitaryPoliceandfemalecombatsoldiersandthethirdgroupiscomprisedofsoldiersfromeliteandspecializedunitsoftheIDF.

New Positions to Assist Palestinian Population

TheIDFandtheCOGATrecentlydecidedtocreatemorepositionsofofcersassistingthePalestiniancivilianpopulationduringcombat.

TheunforgettableimagesfromOperationCastLeadinwhichIsraelisoldierscanbeseenghtingamongtheGazaStrip’scivilianpopulationledtheCivilAdministrationtomakeadecision:incombat,aPopulationAssistanceOfcerwillbeassignedtoeverybattalion,theofcerbeinginchargeofpopulationevacuation,theopeningofhumanitarianaidroutesandevacuationof

injuredcivilianstohospitals.

Anofcialorderdetailingtheofcer’sroleincombatwasrecentlywrittenattheCoordinatorofGovernmentActivitiesintheTerritories(COGAT)headquartersincoordinationwithGroundForces.Theorderwaswrittentodeneatrainingroutineappropriatefortherole’srequirements,namelytheissueofcivilianpopulationsatthesiteofmilitaryoperations.

Theposition’srsttrainingcoursewillbegininDecember2010intheSchoolforCommunicationandCoordinationinTzrinandwilltrainreserveofcers.

AccordingtoCOGAT,thecourseisexpectedtoeducateasmanyastwentyreserveofcersforaweek,coveringthesubjectoftheciviliancomponentincombat.

The need for a role assisting civilian populations at a battalion level was raised followinghumanitarianissuesduringOperationCastLeadintheGazaStripinJanuary2009.Atthetime,PopulationAssistanceOfcerswereassignedtoentirebrigades,operatingundertremendouspressure.Ultimately,theirrolewasregardedasessentialtothesuccessofamission.“Duringaght,civiliansareacomponentthatabsolutelymustbetakenintoaccountandinuencesoperations,”explainedarepresentativefromtheSchoolforCommunicationandCoordination.“Theoperationmadeitevenclearerthatthereisaneedfortheseofcersatthebattalionlevel.”
