The Chinese legend of the Dragon encourages us to respect each

other and not to take advantage. Recently, a man whosemembership had expired for two years and had not rejoined

came to the office needing to use the phone and asked for a

translation service. He expects us to be here to help but is not

repared to contribute, whilst others fully support NCWA. Please

make sure your membership is up-to-date so that we can be here

    when you need us.

    November 2009 - Newsletter

    2009 AGM & Mid-Autumn Festival Date: 29 September 2009Chairmans Speech September 2009

    Good afternoon! Ladies and Gentlemen

As Chairman I represent Nottinghamshire Chinese Welfare Association members, and on their behalf I want to

thank you for your support and for coming here today to our AGM and Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration.

NCWA has been supporting Chinese folk in Nottinghamshire for 19 years now and the last six years have seen

a considerable boost in our activities.

During this time, with the support of our funders, we have established NCWA as a successful, professionally

managed service providing for the needs of local Chinese people and a resource for other organizations to call

on when dealing with Chinese folk.

For all Charities, funding is crucial to their operation, so I particularly want to thank:

    o Awards for all

    o The Community Fund

    o The City Council

    o The County Councilo Boots

o Age Concern & Help the Aged

o And the Nottinghamshire Community Fund

    o NHS

    o European Fund

I want to thank these organizations for their confidence in us and for giving us the resources to provide:

a service that helps people access day to day support that many of us take for granted:

    NHS, Police, Social Services etc

a service that helps people understand the letters they receive not least from the council and social

services a service that provides Social Support in the form of:

Friendship groups so that people can support one another

English classes to improve their grasp of the language

Tai Chi to improve their health

and many other social events which help improve their quality of life

A service that provides a point of contact for other organizations to call on when dealing with Chinese

    issues and people

And also a service that provides Chinese Cultural activities such as this one today

You know we record enquiries to our office so that we can monitor our activity. Consequently we know that

our office typically responds to about 63 enquiries a week, thats over 3200 enquiries a year that need aprofessional response. About half these enquiries are by phone and half with people dropping In.

Now not all of those enquiries will be major issues but this is clearly a considerable work responding to a

considerable need and you can see the broad range of enquiries that our experienced staff needs to deal with.

We are particularly proud of our links to other groups:

    NCVS & YMCA

NHS & City Council & County Council

    Help the Aged/Age Concern

    Elder Forum

Housing Associations: Particularly Metropolitan & Hanover

New College & South Notts College

Radford Care Group & African Caribbean Centre

    Equality Community Forum

    And others too.

Our location is very important to us and our Drop-In centre which is open 5 days a

week and located at the International Community Centre on Mansfield road, provides

an easily accessible point for our members, many of whom are Elders and cant get

about much, but can find the centre of town and places close by.

I have a few photos to show you of some of our activities.

We organized a day trip to London, China Town and Kew Garden and day trip toLiverpool.

We organised BBQ outside ICC garden area.

We also organised birthday party for our elderly over 60.

Nutrition talk is one of a number of healthy talks we hold during the year for our

    members.

Painting and Tai Chi classes are cultural activities we hold during the year for our

    members.

Turning to our accounts, as you can see from the slide the net funds for last year were

negative, and this is clearly not a sustainable situation.

We have been working on finding core funds and this has not been so successful.

Although we have won funding for various activities e.g. healthy project, ESOL andinterpreting we have not managed to put into place the core funding needed to pay for

the general running of the organization.

As you can see we have some reserves, but never-the-less the committee has found it

appropriate to take various unpalatable decisions, particularly:

Making our managers assistant, Manda, redundant

    Moving to a smaller office.

The situation is still serious and we are continuing to look for core funding in order to

maintain the service we are providing.

So please watch this space and if you can help, please get in touch and let us know

how.And you know this service we provide takes a lot of hard work to run, and I would

like to take this opportunity to publically thank some very dedicated people.

    Our manager, Liz

Our brushing painting teacher, Peter Millward

    Our ESOL teacher, Jennifer Liau

    Our ESOL teacher, Gerda Weaver

    Our Talks interpreter, Jenny Hong

Our Tai Chi Teacher, Winnie Chen

    Our Administration Assistant, Sarah

And our office assistant, June & Susan

Well done all of you, I personally see the work that you do and really appreciate yourefforts.

Please give them a round of applause for their efforts.

The other people that contribute to the Association but whose efforts frequently go

    unrecognized are our committee.

    Consultant: Mrs Maryvonne Hands

    Vice Chairman: Mr KK Yau

    Secretary: Mrs Gerda Weaver

    Treasurer: Ms Li Sau Man

I would also like to thank them for their support.

What can we expect from next year? Well as well as working on the funding and

supporting members in their day to day lives, we will be laying on various activities,as you can see.
