You will see a number of statistics quoted throughout this guide. Unless otherwise stated, these statistics are taken from the National Student Survey (2013 and 2014) and the latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey (2014/15).

The annual National Student Survey looks at the satisfaction scores of students at higher education institutions across the UK, and the

Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey gathers data from past students about what they do after they graduate. Both are designed to help you make a more informed choice about where you study.

With special thanks to our FdA Journalism students who have written the student case studies featured throughout this guide.

WHICH QUALIFICATION?There are a number of different types of qualification listed in this guide, full descriptions of which you can find below.

These vary in terms of entry requirements, duration of the course, level and mode of study (full or part-time).

Whichever route you choose you’ll find a strong vocational focus and clear progression routes into either subsequent education or employment.

FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdA/FdSc/FdEng)Foundation degrees are innovative, nationally-recognised qualifications, designed in partnership with employers to give you precisely the skills they look for at a professional level.

Our foundation degrees are awarded either byNottinghamTrentUniversityortheUniversityof Derby, depending on the subject studied.

Generallythisqualificationwilltaketwoyearstocomplete,whenstudiedonafull-timebasis.Manyofour foundation degrees are also offered for study part-time, over the course of three years.

After completing your studies you can progress to a further professional qualification, or top up to an honours degree.

BA (HONS) TOP-UP DEGREEWith only one more year of full-time study (or two years part-time), you can top up your HND or foundationdegreetoafullBA(Hons)degree.

We offer top-up degrees in a number of subjects, all of which are awarded and validated by Nottingham TrentUniversity.

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMA (HNC/HND)HNCs and HNDs are vocational qualifications designed to prepare you for the workplace and can be studied either full-time or part-time. An HND carries double the academic credit of an HNC, and our programmes allow you to top up your HNC to an HND. You could potentially enter the second year of a degree with an HNC, or the second or third year with an HND. An HND can also be topped up to an honours degree with an appropriate top-up course.
