A new place, dedicated entirely toour most ambitious project: the construction of an innovativecenter in Spain geared to theneeds of those with multiplesevere disabilities.

PUPPET THERAPY TRAINING

“Puppet Therapy” is a Lucas Kock Foundation project which combines the creation and use of puppets as a tool for therapy for the disabled.

An instructional workshop was held on the 16th and 17th of November to train the FLK volunteers. The workshop was led by Svetlana Hristova, educator and thereapist, and inaugurated by Ms. Carmen Navarro (Concilwoman for Senior Services) and Mr. Antonio Llorens (Social Services Coordinator).

Thanks to this intiative, 7 volunteers are now “aides” in this type of therapy..

Thanks to the cooperative project of the the Rotary Clubs of Alicante, Vlissingen(Holland), Meppel (Holland), and the Rotary Foundation called “Many Wheels rotating through Rotarian Aid” (www.manywheels.es), last November we receivedfour wheelchair adapted biclycles. They will be part of the resources available to the residents of the FLK Center in Alicante, as well as to other organizations connected to the center and personswith disabilities. Next Outings: - The wheelchair adapted biclycles will be partof a benefit pilgrimage to Santa Faz, in Alicante,this coming April 10th. The proceeds will be given to the Colegio Infanta Elena.

- The Second Solidarity Race will be held onthe 13th of April, in conjuction with the GermanSchool of Madrid.

Our bikes are out and about in Alicante and Madrid !

WE HAVE RECEIVED FOUR DISABILITY CYCLES !

“DISABILITY AWARENESS AND SOCIAL INTEGRAT ION” CONFERENCEA “Disability Awareness and Social Integration” Conference was organized by the Lucas Koch Foundationand MEET on March 9, 2013, with the backing of the European School of Alicante and the OAMI(Office of Accord of the Internal Market-in english). It was an initiative proposed by the citizens inkeeping with the celebration of The European Year of the Citizen 2013.

Participating in the conference was the Mayor of Alicante, Mrs. Sonia Castedo, the Councilwoman of Social Services, Mrs. Asunción Zaplana, as well as several personalities from the European Schools.

The unifying thread of the conference was the educational workshop on awareness TIAMM (Welcome To My World-in english), which FLK has been organizing for several years. There was a brief reviewof the concept of disability, types, degrees, etc., and Lucas’ mother, Irene Koch, gave her testimonial.

Later on, the workshop was introduced and the attendees had the opportunity to experience thefour types of disabilities: visual, auditory, physical and mental.

Following the conference, there was a presentation of adapted sporting events, within the framework of Eurosport, a multisport competition, held every two years, with the participation of students between the ages of 15 and 18, from 14 European Schools.

The event was a success, and as a result, TIAMM(Welcome To My World) Workshops will be held throughout Europe. The Secretary General of the European Schools, Kari Kivinen, will introduce the TIAMM material, and the Adapted Sports and Games to other European Schools and report on the impact and results of the workshops.

Our center is designed so that the residents and users can feel at home,

with utmost emphasis on humane treatment , loving and caring atmosphere,

and respect for the person’s dignity.

We have used all avaiable resurces to reduce our energy consumption and limit

our use of natural resources.

In conjuction with ARUP Engineering, specialized in maximizing eneregy consumption, and Arditecnica

and the architect Christian Klein, we have designed a home which:

1. makes the most of the natural surroundings to optimize energy consumption,

2. uses window and doors as well as other construction materials which are energy efficient,

3. integrates a group of schemes to maxize energy efficiency.

VOLUNTEER’S CORNER

Let’s go on a trip. How about it? We need to pack our suitcases!

Each one of us gets his suitcase and begins to pack-clothes, shoes, toiletries and in no time everythingis ready. But wait….one of the suitcases is not quite so easy……and we can’t even fit everything into just one suitcase! I mean Lucas’ suitcase.

We’ve got his clothes, shoes, pajamas…….But, we still have so many other thing to put in! : 6 or 7 diapers a day, baby wipes, a large towel, enough clothes, 3 bibs a day, 3 or 4 bottles of medication, the blender for grinding food, special scissors to crush food, gaze and iodine for cures, 4 calorieshakes a day to feed him through his tube, large special syringes, splints for feet, etc..

Dear friends:

As the FLK Volunteer Coordinator, I encourage you to join us, by volunteering, to promote awarenessas to the rights and needs of those with severe disabilities and those of their families.

We need ethically and humanely mature, dedicated individuals: with negotiation and collaborationskills, who share in the objectives of the FLK volunteer team.

I invite you to do something so simple and yet so meaningful: Work together with those with severedisabilities so that they may develop their full social, psychological and human potential.

I encourage you who reads this, to join in this adventure to help bring about the happiness of others, and to find your own happiness, by becoming part of this noble cause, undertaken by men and women with “big hearts”. José Parra
