Suffolk Skidaddler’s 5th Annual Kick Off Hike Saturday, May 11, 2013 Harriman State Park

We will be leaving the Route 110 Park and Ride at 7:30am sharp. You must arrange your owntransportation, and bring all your own food and beverages. We will provide the guides. Therewill be two guided hikes to choose from, one easier hike, and one moderate hike. The easier hike is approximately 4 miles of pretty level but rocky trails, there are a few inclines. The moderate hike is approximately 6-7 miles with some mild scrambling. Both hikes offer incredible scenery and are wonderful. We will try to meet up at Pine Meadow Lake for lunch. Please remember that this is Harriman and the trails are very rocky. Hiking boots are highly recommended.

........ A few more pics from the Madonna trip We arrive in beautiful sun shine, settled into the hotel; some people walked the village while other went to get rental skis and boards. The ski school came and did a presentation offering lessons and cruising tours of the mountain.

Bob C got a good start to his holiday lots of wine with dinner, he was sleeping the next morning, while the rest of us where heading out for our first day on the slopes. Bill P tried to slide his board down a hill only for it to take off and land in a creek. Joe M had an upset stomach sick not feeling too good I took him back to the hotel, but first we had to find our way out of a parking garage, not easy when it had no signs for exit. But it did have blue doors lots of them leading us nowhere.

Leo was a great navigator of the mountain leading the way for about 15 people most days. He managed to keep the group together. Every day they went out on a new adventure with him. Some of the ladies booked a touring / lessons with Maurizio an o so good looking young Italian instructor. Sal was the token guy with the ladies, he tried to keep them in line, and it was all clean fun. . Madonna didn’t have a big après ski but some of us made our way every day to the Majestic hotel for cocktail’s and wine. Some of us went to the hotel wellness center the hot tub was a warm tub the pool was great also the sauna and steam room. Helmut showed us how he could walk on the massaging rocks he made it look easy. They had a very nice relaxation area that Debbie B liked, when moved to the bar for a glass of wine forgetting that dinner was coming and she still hadn’t hit the shower.

On Wednesday 19 of us went to Venice, Sal was our guide for the day. We all stayed together much to his amazement. It was great to have someone who sort of knew the lay of the land. Harry’s bar, the bell tower, San Marco Square and many other sights. A few people went to see the ice man in Bolzano on other days.

Jim D took Darya G to Pinzolo to do some black runs; they had a good time until Darya fit flat light and went down. Twisted her knee, which was the end of her ski week. Joe H rented snow shoes and hiked up into the snow fields. Skied down and meet the ladies for lunch. The next day 8 of them upgraded their passes to ski in Folgarida and Marilleva. Thursday and Friday it snowed most of the day which set us up for sunny skies again for Saturday. Home early as we had a 2 hour cocktail party at the hotel get some packing done, have dinner and up very early the next morning to head home. Bill P didn’t sleep he spent most of the night working on his Italian reading and having a few beverages.

I think everybody had a great time sunny, good snow, mild temperatures with new and old friends. I wish everybody well and have a fun and safe rest of the ski season. - Lynn Finnegan

Sunday River, Maine NJSC TripMarch 17th - 22nd

B. The year was 2006. Can you name this trip?

TRAINS, PLANES & AUTOMOBILESorHow I got to the NJ Ski Council Sunday River Trip March 17-22 What a trip! There were some people going up to Vermont to stay at the NJ ski house on Fri, there were some going by train on Sun, however Amtrak derailed at New Haven and they had to bus it from NYC to Bridgeport and some friends picked them up there for the trip up. Others took the Orient or Bridgeport ferry, and there were a few who flew from NY to Portland and rented a car, and one even flew into New Hampshire and rented a car. It's amazing that everyone got there by Sunday afternoon and got into the hot tub for a few drinks. The report from others that skiied Sunday afternoon was that the mountain had very scratchy conditions. Awakening Mon morning we set out at 9AM with mixed emotions (great to be skiing, but scratchy conditions?) Oh. well someone has to do it. Upon hooking up with ski school we went on a mountain tour with the black diamond group. It was awesome what the Sunday River groomers did overnight. We had a fantastic day of skiing on the over 90 groomed trails that were available. We skiied our buns off to a record of 31,000 vertical feet for the day. After an hours soak in the hot tub it was off to the Phoenix House for $5 burgers. Tues. morning surprised us with 5" of fresh powder and we had to repeat yesterdays process all over again. Another exhausting day in the powder, another soak, and now off to the Phoenix House for $11 pasta buffet. Wed. the snow never stopped and there was another 10" of fresh powder. It made you wonder, are we in Aspen? Kathy said let's do Quantum Leap to get to the Jordan area. As soon as I saw the way the wind was blowing I knew I would take a different route via the green trail Sensation to get there. As I rounded the corner at the bottom of Quantum Leap (now renamed Quantum Mistake) I saw the rest of the group trying to maneuver their way down the icy bumps only to wind up in knee deep powder that I was standing in at the base (p.s. the trail map marks this as a single black, however, the marker on the trail itself is a double black - believe the marker not the map!). After regrouping Kathy and Fred led us over to Jordan to do the trees in Blind Ambition (which is where all the blown snow from the trail was hiding). Another banner day on the slopes and back to the hot tub to rest the legs before dinner. Tonight was our group buffet at the hotel. And what a buffet it was with slices of prime rib, gourmet chicken, great salmon, plenty of various veggies, soup and 3 or 4 different desserts. My personal chef couldn't have done a better job! Thurs. we woke up to the worst day on the mountain with blue skies and more than 102 of perfectly groomed trails. The first run of the day was White Heat. We didn't quite ski it correctly so we had to do it a second time. Then off to Obsession and over to ski school for a group of guided skiing for the day. Whoops! Right Stuff looked great so we just had to get that run in resulting in missing the group skiing. Looking at the map I noticed that we missed the trees in Last Tango over the last couple of days - I guess we just have to do them now before we leave. Tonight, after the hot tub it's off to the Matterhorn for another expensive meal ($15). After dinner the group met at Suds Pub for a night of dancing and joviality. Sadly Richie F couldn't make dinner or the Pub because he was iceing his knees (getting old is a bummer) so he could get a few runs in on Fri. morning. Sadly the week was over in a flash and everyone had their own agenda to get home. Some skied the morning and went to the Nj lodge for the night, others caught a plane back to Florida and we left to try to make a noon ferry in Bridgeport. There is only one way to describe this week and that's EPIC! Thanks Kathy and Ed for putting this great trip together - you really add a personal touch by getting to know ALL the 94 participants on the trip. I personally enjoyed skiing with you for the week.
