"I have told you these things, so that in Me you

may have peace. In this world you will have trou-

ble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

John 16:33

This morning I awoke in the usual manner. I

crawled out of bed, rubbing my eyes and walked

downstairs. It was at this point that I encountered

the most awful stench. My Golden Retriever had a

gross and smelly accident in our family room.

Of course he did, I thought. Because a wife with

pneumonia, and a toddler with a fever wasn’t

enough to deal with (not even counting the larger

ongoing issues we’re navigating as a family). So I

opened the back door to let the house air out—air

that was of course quite cold due to the freshly

fallen snow—and I began cleaning.

I’m really not complaining. This morning was just

a minor bump in the road, no big deal. However, it

reminded me of Jesus’ words, In this world you

will have trouble. This morning’s troubles were

small but a smelly reminder of all the kinds of

trouble we face in this life: relational difficulties,

financial difficulties, health difficulties . . . . Ever

since Adam and Eve sinned, this life has been

filled with pain and trials. In Job 14:1 we read,

―Man born of woman is of few days and full of

trouble.” We recognize that indeed our lives are

short and filled with all sorts of difficulty.

But we also realize that even Jesus was not spared

any hardship. On the contrary, He suffered as no

other man before or after. He faced rejection, be-

trayal, beatings, a brutal execution, and the weight

of the entire world’s sin. Yet, He suffered will-

ingly, intentionally, to reconcile sinful persons to

Himself. And it is here that we find our hope.

But He was pierced for our transgres-

sions, He was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was

upon Him, and by His wounds we are

healed. Isaiah 53:5

You see, Christ’s suffering opened the door for

ours to end. His death paid the penalty of sin. For

the first time since the Garden, people could be

restored to God if they would only place their trust

in Him. Mankind’s sin and guilt could be wiped

away, along with suffering and death.

And that is something that gives me great joy.

This world is short and temporary—so also are the

sufferings that go with it. As a follower of Jesus

Christ, I serve the Risen Lord who has overcome

this world and conquered sin and death. One day I

will be free from the entanglements and discour-

agements that are a part of daily living. In the

meantime I need to model myself after Christ, who

bore His afflictions willingly. I need to endure

hardship as a good solider of Jesus Christ (2 Timo-

thy 2:3), realizing that our present sufferings are

not worth comparing with the glory that will be

revealed in us (Romans 8:18). My time in this

dying world is only to develop perseverance and

character and to share the message of life to those

who have not yet realized the hope that is found in

Christ (Romans 5:1-11).

And if in this life I have the chance to share the joy

of salvation and to see someone come to salvation

in Christ—well then, a hacking cough or smelly

morning is quite easily endured. And as for the

harder stuff, thankfully I have Christ’s victory and

the Spirit’s strength to carry me through.

Women’s Morning Bible Study

“Mocha on the Mount”

By Sandra Glahn

When Jesus gave His "Sermon on the Mount," His

listeners knew only the teaching of the religious

leaders of their day, who interpreted the Law for

everyone. These leaders had led the people astray,

and Jesus set out to make some needed corrections.

If Jesus was talking to Jewish followers looking for

an earthly kingdom, how does His message apply to

us, His followers in the Church? Come join us as

we follow Jesus to the hillside west of Galilee, sit

down and listen to His words of righteousness, re-

pentance and the coming Kingdom.

The cost of this seven week study is $10.00. Child-

care is provided. All women are welcome!

Good Friday?

At first glance, Good Friday appears to be a misno-

mer. It seems inconsistent that the day of Christ’s

crucifixion should in any way be described as

―good.‖ But that seeming inconsistency vanishes

when we understand that the ancient meaning of

good was ―holy.‖ The word holy is entirely consis-

tent with the suffering and cross that Christ endured

for us. Hence, Good Friday is also known as Holy

Friday.

Groups are here!

Missionary of the Month

Tooele Christian Fellowship

Attendance at Tooele Christian

Fellowship has continued to

grow. They found property

that should meet their needs so

they are now looking for the

best way to finance it. Pray for

wisdom as they make decisions

that will affect their long range future plans.

A late winter storm blew

in and challenged people

to stay at home, but for

those who braved the

weather and came out to

the game night, it was a

fun and warm evening.

There were rousing

games of Apples to Ap-

ples, Mad Gab, Imaginiff, and Uno. Some even

played air hockey. Though the little kids were

more than welcome to play games, many opted to

watch Finding Nemo instead. They seemed to

enjoy their movie time together. As for the game

players, there was laughter and (mostly) healthy

competition. Even the most cutthroat opponents

were gracious winners—and losers. Throughout

the night, players took breaks to refill their plates

from the plethora of snack options on the food

table. The night was chock full of fun, fellowship

and calories and everyone seemed to enjoy them-

selves.

If not for the word ―craft‖ in the Women’s

Ministry Cheesecake and Craft night, we may have had

to fend off the

men who came

in search of

dessert. As it

was, they

stayed home

and left the

crafting and

the eating to

the females.

There was

certainly no shortage of delicious cheesecake on Febru-

ary 27 and the night appeared to be a complete success.

The event was spearheaded by Holly Thompson who led

us through the instructions of making adorable fabric

backed plates. Holly, Judy Burrows and Shauna Hodges

put a lot of work into making sure we had enough mate-

rials for the 30+ women who attended.

Many people contributed cheesecakes to the

event and we had more than enough. Everyone seemed

to enjoy the night as we ate, made crafts and fellow-

shipped with one another. Aside from eating and craft-

ing, a few of us became

well acquainted with the

circuit breakers. Appar-

ently the church’s cir-

cuits don’t appreciate

dozens of blow dryers

being used at the same

time. Well…now we

know. We worked

around this minor set-

back and had a fabulous

evening.

Several ladies left with door prizes, offsetting

their $5.00 admission charge. The prizes included scrap-

book items, fabric backed plate examples, lotions, canis-

ters with cookie decorations, and even a free slice of

cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory. Yum! If you

joined us, we appreciate your support of Sonrise’s

Women’s Ministry. Our next event is the Bloom Confer-

ence at Southeast Baptist Church on April 24. We look

forward to seeing you there!

Page 10: April Rising Sun

I have been reading the books of John (1 John, 2

John, 3 John and the Gospel of John) a lot over the

past few months. I have enjoyed sitting at the feet

of the apostle of love (see 1 John especially for a

deeper understanding into this nickname). In re-

cent weeks however I have had a distinct impres-

sion placed on my heart that I needed to read Hag-

gai. You might be saying ―Haga-what‖? Yes, I

did say Haggai, pronounced ˈha-gē-ˌī (see web-sters.com if you’d like to hear the pronunciation (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/

haggai).

I must confess that though I had this impression it

went unheeded until yesterday, when it appeared

that the voice of the Lord was screaming it in my

ear.

To set the scene, Holly and I are each in the proc-

ess of reading through our devotions. She is read-

ing through First John and I’m reading through the

Gospel of John. As we are finishing we begin

talking specifically about a reading program that

we have decided to do for our devotions. I then

make a comment that I’ve been having the distinct

impression to read Haggai. The impression contin-

ues to increase in my spirit as we talk. A quick

note must be made here that I have read Haggai

before, but it has been some time and admittedly

is not a book that I have frequented in the past. In

addition, I have actively walked in Christian cir-

cles and heard hundreds of sermons and I cannot

remember the last time a pastor used the book of

Haggai in any way shape or form for illustration,

main text or otherwise. Nor was it ever the central

focus of study in any of my Bible classes through

college. That being said, I finally heeded the

voice inside my head and to Haggai I turned.

Haggai, considered one the Minor Prophets, wrote

the second shortest book in the Old Testament

(Obadiah being the shortest). Not much is known

about Haggai as an individual, nor was his minis-

try very long (estimated at 4 months) and yet

within four years everything was accomplished

that he set out to do: the people completed the

temple that had been destroyed years before.

We must back up a bit, because this information

was not at the forefront of my mind when I

opened Haggai yesterday. I had no idea what I

was in for. But it was within the first five verses

that I knew what God was trying to tell me.

Verse 1: In the second year of King Darius, on the

first day of the sixth month, the word of the

LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerub-

babel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to

Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:

Okay not the most exciting intro, but this is just

the ground work, giving you an idea of historical

context of the book. The next few verses however

hammered me.

Verses 2-5: This is what the LORD Almighty

says: "These people say, 'The time has not yet

come for the LORD's house to be built.' " Then the

word of the LORD came through the prophet Hag-

gai: "Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in

your paneled houses, while this house remains a

ruin?"

5 Now this is what the LORD Almighty says:

"Give careful thought to your ways. You have

planted much, but have harvested little. You eat,

but never have enough. You drink, but never have

your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm.

You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with

holes in it."

(From the Associate Pastor continued on next page)

Page 11: April Rising Sun

(From the Associate Pastor, continued)

At this point I just stopped and had at least a

good idea of what the Lord is saying to

me. The people of Israel had been back from

the Babylonian captivity for approximately 20

years and yet the temple still remained in ruins

while the people ―lived in [their] paneled

houses.‖ The people’s priorities were self-

centered and not God-centered. They were

more concerned about their own homes and

well-being than that of God’s house as evi-

denced by excessive spending.

Does any of this sound familiar? In a two

second Google search I found an article from

generousgiving.org entitled ―Christian Con-

sumerism and Debt.‖ Pulling from multiple

articles throughout the recent past, the article

makes this stunning observation.

―How distinct is the Christian com-

munity from the secular world when

it comes to consumerism and debt?

The data seems to say that there’s not

much difference at all. Whatever our

avowed values, our behavior looks

very much like that of the world:

high levels of spending, large credit

card debt, foolish financial choices

and a self-centered mindset.‖

As believers we understand that the church is

not found in a building, but in the people who

have received Christ, have the promised Holy

Spirit dwelling within them; this is the

church. Yet we have chosen to abide by Mat-

thew 18:20, ―For where two or three come

together in My name, there am I with them."

As a result we congregate in church buildings,

we establish and vote on church budgets, de-

velop programs and so on. Yet our society

sees church after church failing to meet budg-

ets that its people have committed to. All the

while living in a society that shares in much

the same attitude described by Haggai.

Haggai gives us pause as believers, me in-

cluded. Am I being faithful with what God

has provided? We must ask, am I putting Him

and His desires first, or am I finding that I am

never full or satisfied? All the while the

church I love and serve fails to make the fi-

nancial commitments I have promised to sup-

port, while I spend my time and money on

what could be defined as ―frivolous‖ things? I

have long heard it said that you can see where

someone’s priorities in life are by where they

put ―their money‖ and time. Where are our

priorities as a church body, what do we find to

be of the highest priority? It is easy for us to

say, but if we take an honest look, what do we

find? May we all answer honestly and like the

people of Haggai’s day make the necessary

life shift to set our priority to build Sonrise

into the house the Lord desires.

Are you ready to follow the Lord in bap-

tism? There will be a baptism class on

Sunday, March 28 at 9:30 a.m. Contact the

For the impatient

Above all, trust in the slow work of God ….

Give our Lord the benefit of believing

that His hand is leading you,

and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself

in suspense and incomplete.

Above all, trust in the slow work of God,

our loving Vine-dresser.

~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

What is faith?

―Sight is not faith, and hearing is not faith, neither is

feeling faith; but believing when we neither see, hear

nor feel is faith; and everywhere the Bible tells us our

salvation is to be by faith. Therefore we must believe

before we feel, and often against our feelings, if we

would honor God by our faith.‖

~ Hannah Whitall Smith
