Published by the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce • www.springfieldchamber.com • April 2010 • Volume 28, No. 4 Missouri Governor Jay Nixon proposed sweeping changes to various departments and agencies of state government in a keynote address at the annual meeting of the Springfield Business Develop- ment Corporation, the Chamber’s economic development subsidiary organization. In his March 11 address to more than 175 business and professional leaders, Nixon outlined his plans to meet a projected $500 million budget shortfall. They include merging the state’s two education departments, consolidating the Missouri Highway Patrol and Water Patrol and turning over collection of child support to private industry. The Governor also emphasized the need to reform the state’s tax credit programs, indicating that over the last 10 years, tax credits have “ballooned to over $585 million a year”. Nixon said that some tax credit programs should be capped and others eliminated if they aren’t producing a return on investment. “To get the savings that we need, we must right-size government,” Nixon said. The $126 million of budget reductions announced by the Governor is in addition to the more than $850 million in spending cuts Nixon has made for the current fiscal year, which ends in June 2010. Prior to the Governor’s keynote address, retiring SBDC board members Dr. Hal Higdon (Ozarks Technical Community College); Doug Pitt (ServiceWorld Computer Center); John Schaefer (Ozarks Coca Cola/ Dr Pepper Bottling Company); and Randell Wallace (Lathrop & Gage, LLP) were recognized for their service to the organization. John Wanamaker (BKD, LLP), President of the Board of Directors, highlighted the 2010 Action Plan which heavily focuses on national business development and existing business and industry retention and expansion.
