ARC 2625 INTERNSHIP REPORT Name: Teo Chen Yi Student ID: 0320618 My first project was MK31 which is a condominium building. I was assigned to update the presentation slides with drawings that was to be coloured. I was working on colouring the drawings as well using the Photoshop software. The coloured drawings I have done consists of the unit layout plan of the also the tower plate were included in the presentation slides which will be presented on the following day for the upcoming client-consultant meeting. Besides, I was given a chance to witness the client-consultant meeting of this project. The meeting was held at the client’s office which is the developer company UEM Sunrise Bhd. I have witness how a client-consultant meeting was operate and the parties that is involved in the project. This project allows me to speed up my working speed where I became more familiar with the software and also gaining more knowledge of the software. Besides, although I only have the chance to witness but not participate in the meeting but I have gained knowledge about the process of a project involved different parties that plays a different role in the project. On the second week and third week, I was assigned to another project in Putrajaya. The UMLAND project consists of lot 8, 9 and 10. The task given last for two weeks where I was working on adding columns, amend drawings of the parking lots which includes changing the position of the parking bays and also making small changes to the circulation and traffic of the parking lots. Also, my task includes colouring the floor plan to prepare for submission. Besides, I have also done the area tabulation of the project where I calculate the floor area of each space and also the ventilation percentage. This project allows me to gain more knowledge what should be included in the submission drawings for development order and also even the tiny details would affect other elements in the building such as the position of the columns would affect the circulations of the parking lots. Also, the process of calculating the floor area should be as accurate as possible due to the amount of fees paid is according to the total floor area of the building designed. Moreover, I was aware of the authority requirement as I was asked to type out a list of authority requirements. I was assigned back to the project I did on the first week but with the progress of phase 2 with 11 levels which is located right beside phase 1. My task was to amend the drawings of phase 2 that consist of the site boundary, setback lines. Due to the changes of the site boundary and retaining wall, I have to amend the drawings to make sure the building is within the setback line of the site and also the ramp around the building that leads to the car park located at the lower ground does not cross over the setback line that affects the landscape of the ground floor. Besides, my task includes updating the surveyor plan and also updating the drain easement plan to the latest according to the civil engineer plan and also update every drain easement drawing in every floor of the floor plans. This is because after a few meetings with the client together with engineer, there are a few civil changes to be made to coordinate the placement of the drain easement. In the meanwhile, I was introduced another project at the same time due to the overload work that was needed to be done by a person in a short period of time, and also with the Chinese New Year break around the corner. Thus, I was assigned to help with the bomba calculation and also colouring the tower plate of the project CN1 which is located in Johor Bahru. After the Chinese New Year break, I continued working on the remaining floor plans amendment. The project CN1 allowed me to gain knowledge about bomba calculation where there are few things to consider such as the window size of the building will affect the ventilation of the building. Also, the glass of the window have to be consider when accident happened that causes the glass to break. Besides, the project MK31 allowed me to gained knowledge about what should be included in the floor plans to ensure a complete and presentable floor plan.

On this week, I am still working on the project MK31. Every Friday is the meeting of this project

and according to the meeting on the previous week, there are slight changes of the site boundary

again and the amendment of the drawings are done once again. Besides, the ramp access to the car

park is added longer. Thus, there are amendments to be made on the parking bays and also the

circulation of the parking lot. The circulations of the three levels of parking lots were changed due to

the relocation of some of the parking bays. Besides, the ramp access to the drain easement was added

to the drawings. After amending and updating all the drawings to the latest requirement, the drawings

will be placed in the title block and to be submit. The amending process of the parking lots allowed

me to have the opportunity to learn how to create circulations in the parking lot that does not cause

unnecessary congestion and heavy traffic. It may seems like an easy task but it required lots of thinking

and consideration in the process. For example, the route that leads to the exit should not be connected

to too many other route. Besides, we should design alternative route for the user to choose. This is to

divert the routes preventing the cars to only follow the routes leading to only one main route that will

cause congestion. It is indeed a challenging task and I am glad I have this chance designing the parking

lot although it is an amendment of design.

On this week, after I have done all the amendment on the drawings, I was given a task to colour

the floor plans of the MK31 phase 1. The floor plans of phase 1 is coloured again due to the slight

amendment in the design which was done by my colleague. Thus, the previous presentation drawings

I have done on the first week is no longer usable. Besides, this time I have more understanding towards

the project and while colouring I am able to apply the colour and texture on which to emphasized

more for a better outcome and more presentable drawings. Also, everytime I will learn bits of bit of

the software which allows me to work more efficient and also able to produce a more realistic and

presentable drawings for the presentation. Although it is only a few floor plans to colour however it

still took me few days to complete my task. Overall, I am satisfied with my improvement of using the

Photoshop software and also producing a better presentation drawings.

After spending days on colouring the floor plans, I was assigned to do the area tabulation of phase

1 of MK31. The area tabulation includes calculating the number of the parking bays at every level of

the parking lots, area of the landscape and facilities and also the units. The area tabulation are done

for the each space of the facilities at each level and also the gross floor area of each level. The process

of doing the area tabulation required careful observation and checking where the total area of the

facilities should match the gross floor area of the related subject. I was always been a careless person.

While carrying out the area tabulation, I have always be as careful as I could to prevent any mistake

done that might affect other things. Then, I was assigned with colouring the elevation of MK31. Due

to the changes of the building’s colour, the elevation has to be coloured again with a different colour

and outlook. Besides, I have also helped on another project this week which was just the starting that

is located at Pulau Seratusa. I was just given task to spline over the island shape in AutoCAD. Besides,

while my superior were attending the meeting for MK31, I was asked to help another colleague on a

new project on tracing over the shape of the island which is the Pulau Seratusa. I believe it is a new

project that will be starting soon.

On the last week of my internship, I was basically finishing up my task on the project MK31 by

colouring the drawings of phase 1. I was working on colouring the other side of the elevations and also

the section of the building. After using the software for multiple colouring work, I am more familiar

with the software and able to work even faster with it. Besides, I was introduced to another project

and also helped with it. This project is located in Pulau Perhentian and it is also at the starting point of

the project. The task I was assigned to is to research on the activities and attractions on Pulau

Perhentian and what attracts people to come. The project is to design a new villa on Pulau Perhentian.

Besides, my task was also to research the hotels and resorts there together with the price rates at

different season. Although I was only involved in the starting of the project but I have learnt that

before designing, many research and observations have to be done about the site even before visiting

the site.

Throughout this two months of internship, I have gained knowledge more than I could gain from

school. Working in a real life field is totally different from what is like working with assignment

teammates in university. For example, like the project MK31 is actually a project that has already on-

going for quite some time due to client is not satisfied with the design and the changes had been made

a lot of times as working for a client we were to satisfy our client as much as possible. In this situation,

designing for client is different from designing for our studio project coming out with our own concept

and design until we are satisfied with our own design. Besides, I am also aware of every drawings have

to fulfil authority requirements for submission or else the drawings will be rejected and extra fees

have to be paid as well. Also, there are dateline set for the submission of the drawings. If failed to

submit on time, punishment of payment have to be made as well. I have been through working

overtime during this internship just to fold the papers so that the drawings could be submit on time.

It is almost similar to when we were rushing for our assignment submission in university. In a nutshell,

working life is somehow similar to our life when we are still studying but with more responsibility.
