Berlin – In conjunction with his charitable foundati-on Schulbausteine für Gando, Architect Francis Kéré, founder and director of Kéré Architecture, has announced a charity gala for the construction of the Atelier in Burkina Faso. The event will be held on June 20th, 2014 in Berlin, Germany.

The Atelier is an integral piece of Kéré’s Gando campus, together with the Primary School, the School Extension, the School Library and the Teacher’s Housing. It will serve as a community centre with a focus towards supporting the educational, cultural, and sustainable needs of the village.

“I personally come from Gando and I know how difficult it is to acquire knowledge and education. Through this centre we are trying to deepen all the ideas we’ve acquired over the years of working here. We want to develop these ideas further and to transfer them to as many young people as possible” (quote from recent video interview available on www.fuergando.de)

In partnership with the Accademia di Architettura of Mendrisio, Francis Kére and Schulbausteine für Gando were able to bring a group of students from Swit-zerland to Burkina Faso for the development of the initial construction phases of the Atelier.

“The idea was to bring students to the construction site from the Accademia di Architettura who could help us to build. I wanted the students to identify themselves with the project, that’s why we wanted (them) to learn how to build with community.“

Launched in November 2013, the project has been crowdfunded with the German fundraising platform betterplace.org and has already reached 52% of the desired fundraising goal of 45.000€. In order to complete the construction of the Atelier as soon as possible, Francis Kéré and Schulbausteine für Gando are organizing a charity gala that will include a lecture by Francis Kéré, exhibition of his award-winning projects in Gando, and an interactive model construc-tion of the Atelier.

Using his work in Gando as an example, Francis Kére will advocate the importance of community-driven and sustainable architecture for the future with special guest, friends, supporters and journalists. The main focus of the event is a collaborative and interactive model of the Atelier, aimed to raise funds for the project´s com-pletion.

Through the www.betterplace.org/en/fundraising-events/bricks, friends from all over the world can now contribute directly to the cause by purchasing a range of scaled brick kits to symbolically help build the Atelier at this event. The attendees will transform this event into a living construction site while at the same time suppor-ting the completion of the Atelier in Gando.

Due to limited space, attendance is closed to the general public. Supporters who contribute 500€ or more towards the Atelier however, will receive an invitation to the charity gala. This event will be held on June 20th, 2014 in Berlin in collaborati-on with Kéré Architecture and supported by MTC – Moving Targets Consulting.

General contributions can be made at www.betterplace.org/p15529
