Vierendeel Truss Views

The program for this project was to design a museum at Kaena Point on Oahu. This facility needed to be placed rel-ative to an exposed lava and be able to function only with mini-mal lighting.

The design concept was cen-tered on the lava tube as the design parti. What makes Kaena a real gem are all the beautiful views. So it was important to frame those views and limit those coming to the space so that when they entered the views would be opened to them.

The site also bisects a public walk way. So it was important to create a gate way into Kaena without forcing people to enter the museum. While still creat-ing a beautiful entrance into the museum.

The DHHL came and invited all the students at the school of architecture to participate in a charrette to design a Kauhale or a multigenerational home. As a group three of us set out to solve the problem.

The main part of the design was to create a home that could be modular for expansion. Also cost was a major driver. The DHHL also has special priv-ileges and does not have to conform to building codes and standards. So as part of our design we focused on using locally produced bamboo for structure. After design and concept was fi nished I was delegated to complete graphics and renderings for the project.

This was an interesting project. We were charged with creating a hurricane resilient structure at the Nanakuli High School on the Leeward side of Oahu. The class was made up of plan-ners and two architects. We performed a site analysis and determined a best course of action. As the group split I became in charge of renovating the existing cafeteria to become a shelter that conformed to the ICC-500 standard.

For the design the most important part was to create a place for people and not a concrete bunker. At the same time however the building needed to be impact resistant. To achieve this an arcade style set of concrete columns was placed in the front of the building. Then an arch system would be used to encapsulate the old building in a protective layer. By designing the building this way it required only removal of the old roof and kept most of the existing structure intact and was able to tie into the structure to help displace the load.

For this project we were asked to redesign the Tate Mod-ern in London by fi nding something around the site and using it as a design concept. I found a sculpture across the bridge that when people walk towards it they are forced around it like water. This then created the thought of how to show movement of water which led to looking at ink drops.

By making sketches of ink drops the buildings fl oor plan was created. For the interior concept it needed to be a gallery. Having a structure centered on ink drops the building became the cup of water and the interior became the ink drop itself. Colored illuminated panels and change-able partitions helps to enforce the dynamic nature of ink drops.
