Kindergarten Handbook For

Arctic Light Elementary School

Kindergarten is an exciting important time in the life of a child. It is time to grow, to learn, and to explore. We are all looking forward to providing a fun and learning-filled year for our new kindergarten students. As parents you will always be your child's most important teacher and role model. We plan to work closely with you, because we believe your child will learn more and be happier if we work as a team. When home and school are partners children learn best! We look forward to meeting our new kindergartners and their families.

Kindergarten Start Up

Assessments times are scheduled at the Meet and Greet. Assessments are scheduled for the first two of school.

The first week of kindergarten is as follows:

August 17th -18th: Assessments Teachers meet with their students for 20 minutes to identify each child's strengths and weaknesses. August 21st: Regular Flex Schedule AM Session 8:30am-1:00pm PM Session 10:30am-3:00pm

Kindergarten Drop-off & Pick-up Procedures All kindergartens use the front door to enter and exit the school. If it is necessary for you to pick up your student before dismissal you must report to the front office. Arctic Light is a 100% ID check school.

AM Kindergarten Arrival: 8:10am Kindergarten students may enter through the gym doors for breakfast 8:15am Earliest available drop off for kindergarten students 8:30am Class starts 8:40am Tardy bell rings. A tardy slip is issued by the front office. All students running late need to be accompanied by parent into the building.

AM Kindergarten Departures: 1:00pm Kindergarten pick-up in the commons ***Parents/guardians must come in to pick up their students. Please wait until 12:55pm to enter the building. Thank You.***

PM Kindergarten Arrival: 10:25am Earliest available drop off time. Staff is on duty in the commons. 10:30am Class starts 10:40am Tardy Bell. A tardy slip, issued from the front office, is required to enter class

PM Kindergarten Departures: 3:00pm Dismissal Bell All parents/guardians must enter the building, no earlier than 2:55pm to pick up their kindergarten student. **Kindergarteners are not permitted to walk to or from school alone!**

Notes From The Nurse

Health Screening The nurse is available for health questions during classroom-based assessment times in August. Please stop by to see her either before or after your appointment. TB Risk Assessment Please fill out the TB Risk Assessment Form. These questions will determine whether or not your student will need to be screened for tuberculosis. Prescription Medication Prescription medication can be given at school only if it is sent in the original container. All prescriptions must be delivered by an adult to the nurse and requires a Medication Administration Form to be signed by both guardian and the prescribing medical provider. Over The Counter Medications All non-prescription medications, including cough drops, are to be administered to students through the Nurse’s office. The nurse has a limited supply of OTC medications to offer. Your written permission is required for these to be administered. Food Allergies And The School Breakfast/Lunch Program If your student is allergic to any food served in the school breakfast or lunch program and this is a program you plan t use at school, accommodations will be made. We must have written record of the allergy, signed by your medical provider. Having this document of file is the only way we can ensure your student is not inadvertently given the allergen. Please talk with the nurse regarding this matter. Illness Children with viral or bacterial illnesses who have a fever, diarrhea, or are vomiting are contagious. Products containing acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) can help bring the fever down and make the child more comfortable, but the child is still shedding and spreading germs. Acutely ill students need to stay home. Please keep children home until they are fever free with no vomiting or diarrhea within 24 hours. Immunizations must be current. Your child may not start school in August until immunizations are up to date. Students entering FNSBSD in the Fall will need to show proof that they are fully immunized according to Alaska State Law. Students will need: 1. DTAP 4 or 5 doses (Last one after age 4) 2. Polio 3 or 4 doses (Last one after age 4) 3. MMR 2 doses (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) 4. Hepatitis A 2 doses 5. Hepatitis B 3 Doses 6. Varicella 2 Doses (Chicken Pox) The school nurse can review your child’s record and determine which immunizations are needed. All students must be in compliance with the Alaska Immunization Compliance Standard. If minimum spacing requirements are not met, students will need additional doses or a medical exemption form from your physician. These immunizations can be administered by your medical provider or Basset Army Hospital in the immunizations clinic. You do not need an appointment. This is a walk-in clinic.
