HANGING baskets are popular everywhere you go, and they are as indi- vidual as the person who planted them. So how do you go about planting a hanging bas- ket that will survive? The first step is to buy a basket – and the size of the basket is important. Small baskets with a diameter of 30cm or less dry out very quickly and cannot contain many plants. A 40cm basket is best – giving good displays while remaining not too big or heavy to manage. Large baskets are bet- ter for sunny places and small baskets are best used in cooler, shadier sites where they won’t dry out. The basket can be made from wire or plas- tic. Some of the plastic bas- kets have built-in water reservoirs which can save hassle when it comes to watering. However, you cannot plant through the sides of these baskets so you should choose trailing plants to cover the sides. Once you have chosen the basket it is time to think about lining it. The traditional lining is moss, but there are many modern alterna- tives made from renew- able resources such as coconut fibre, wool, foam or moulded card. Whichever you choose, make sure the lining you buy fits your basket, oth- erwise the compost will be washed out when you water. After the basket has been lined, you should prepare the compost. Use a peat-based or peat-alternative compost because it is much lighter than soil-based compost. Add a controlled- release fertiliser and/or water-storing granules or gel to the compost and mix thoroughly. Put the com- post/fertiliser mixture into the lined basket, to about half-full. If you have a wire bas- ket, make planting holes through the liner at soil level and insert small plants through the holes. Fill the basket with compost and plant the top. One of the secrets of having a fine hanging basket display is filling the basket with plants and then adding one more. To avoid run-off and a wet head when watering, sink one or two empty flower pots in the top and fill these with water. Water the planted bas- ket thoroughly and place in a shady position for a least two weeks, until the plants are growing on strongly. After this, move the basket to your preferred position. Always think of safety when putting up a basket and bracket. Ensure both are secure- ly fixed at a height that is easy to reach. In the summer, or in a sunny position, hanging baskets dry out quickly. If you find a regular morning and evening drink is not enough, per- forate a small polythene bag filled with ice cubes and pop it in to the bas- ket to melt.
