Summer’s here: Hanging baskets are individual and always look great.

HANGING baskets arepopular everywhere yougo, and they are as indi-vidual as the person whoplanted them.

So how do you go aboutplanting a hanging bas-ket that will survive?

The first step is to buya basket – and the size ofthe basket is important.Small baskets with adiameter of 30cm or lessdry out very quickly andcannot contain manyplants.

A 40cm basket is best –giving good displayswhile remaining not toobig or heavy to manage.

Large baskets are bet-ter for sunny places andsmall baskets are best

used in cooler, shadiersites where they won’tdry out.

The basket can bemade from wire or plas-tic.

Some of the plastic bas-kets have built-in waterreservoirs which cansave hassle when itcomes to watering.

However, you cannotplant through the sidesof these baskets so youshould choose trailingplants to cover the sides.

Once you have chosenthe basket it is time tothink about lining it.

The traditional liningis moss, but there aremany modern alterna-tives made from renew-

able resources such ascoconut fibre, wool, foamor moulded card.

Whichever you choose,make sure the lining youbuy fits your basket, oth-erwise the compost willbe washed out when youwater.

After the basket hasbeen lined, you shouldprepare the compost.

Use a peat-based orpeat-alternative compostbecause it is muchlighter than soil-basedcompost.

Add a controlled-release fertiliser and/orwater-storing granulesor gel to the compostand mix thoroughly.

Put the com-post/fertiliser mixtureinto the lined basket, toabout half-full.

If you have a wire bas-ket, make planting holesthrough the liner at soillevel and insert smallplants through the holes.

Fill the basket withcompost and plant thetop.

One of the secrets ofhaving a fine hanging

basket display is fillingthe basket with plantsand then adding onemore.

To avoid run-off and awet head when watering,sink one or two emptyflower pots in the topand fill these with water.

Water the planted bas-ket thoroughly and placein a shady position for aleast two weeks, untilthe plants are growingon strongly.

After this, move thebasket to your preferredposition. Always think ofsafety when putting up abasket and bracket.

Ensure both are secure-ly fixed at a height thatis easy to reach.

In the summer, or in asunny position, hangingbaskets dry out quickly.

If you find a regularmorning and eveningdrink is not enough, per-forate a small polythenebag filled with ice cubesand pop it in to the bas-ket to melt.
