    All Natural Secretsfor Arthritis and

    Joint Pain Relief

Arthritis is the believed to be oldest discovered ailment o mankind. Scientistshave even ound this disease in the joints o some dinosaurs and even

    mummies!

As a term, arthritis means joint inammation. While there are severalhundred orms o arthritis, the most common are Osteoarthritis andRheumatoid Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis, the most common orm, is a degenerative condition thatis caused when the joint cartilage begins to break down rom either

prolonged wear-and-tear, traumatic injury or inection. These lead to abony enlargement.

Rheumatoid Arthritis, on the other hand, is a chronic disease o the

autoimmune system that causes inammation o the synovial membrane(joint lining). This causes destruction and deormity o bone, cartilage, ligament and muscle tissue.

Regardless o type, common arthritic symptoms include pain in the joints, redness and swelling o the joints and loss o joint unction. The pain oosteoarthritis gradually worsens with use over the course o the day, whereas the pain o rheumatoid arthritis tends to be worse on waking andimproves as the day progresses.

Despite advances in science, the exact causes o arthritis are unknown

but there are certain risk actors that have been identifed:

Genetics - likely to contribute to risk but no one knowshow much.

Age - the older you are the more at riskyou become.

Weight - maintaining a healthy weight will ease theload on the joints.

Previous Injury - major injuries are likely to contribute to risk.

Occupational Hazards - repetitive, high demand jobs increase risk.

Certain Sports - high level, high demand sports cancontribute to arthritis (although generalexercise is always a plus)

Illness or infection - an inection in the joint or gout can leadto arthritis.

The Arthritis Foundation estimates that some 59 million Americans willhave arthritis by the year 2020. That means nearly 20% o the population is

    suering daily rom painul joints!

Sadly enough, the Arthritis Foundation reports that hal o the Americans

with arthritis dont believe anything can be done to help ease their pain. Andtheir doctors play into that ear, by relying on cortisone injections (whichactually weakens cartilage and depresses immunity) and NSAIDs (whichdestroy stomach lining and liver unction) to reduce pain.

You may be in this situation yoursel, having thrown your hands up inrustration and simply decided to live with your pain. The good news isthat by reducing the inammation you can signifcantly ease the painulsymptoms associated with arthritis.

Lets take a closer look at the two major orms o arthritis and then thesolutions you can turn to or relie.

OsteoarthritisOsteoarthritis is the degeneration o the cartilage that cushions the areawhere two bones meet to orm a joint. When the cushion wears out orcracks, the bones rub together, causing intense pain. In severe cases, the

joints can develop calcifcations. This means that calcium builds up on thebones and sot tissues, making them sti and painul to move.

This type o arthritis occurs slowly over time, and is the type that manyrunners and construction workers begin to eel by middle age.

The solution most mainstream doctors take, is to relieve the pain with drugs;rather than fxing the problem that is causing the pain. And research rom

around the world has proven that there are ways to reverse calcifcationand to restore damaged cartilage! And doing this is the only way to get rido osteoarthritis pain once and or all.

Here are some o the things that you can do:

    Cod Liver Oil supplement

Research rom Cardi University, in Great Britain, ound that cod liver oil not

only relieves pain, but it also stops and even reverses the damage causedby osteoarthritis (and rheumatoid arthritis as well). The recommended doseo cod liver oil is our capsules twice a day.

    Devils Claw supplement

A study published in the journal, Phytomedicine, compared the herbdevils claw with Diacerein, a prescription medication oten prescribed orosteoarthritis. The research ound that the herb was just as eective as thedrug at relieving pain.

The recommended dose o devils claw is two grams per day. Be sure todiscuss this herb with your physician beore you take it. I you are on a blood-

thinning medicine, like Coumadin, this herb may be contraindicated.

    Glucosamine Sulfate

Many studies have shown that glucosamine helps promote healing whilerelieving stiness and pain. You probably have heard it marketed in the

orm o glucosamine chondroitin. But that might not be the best orm o

glucosamine to take. Some studies have linked chondroitin to an increasedrisk o prostate cancer.

Our preerred alternative is glucosamine sulate--it includes that importantsulur component. Give it a ew weeks, and youll notice real, long-lastingrelie as your joints begin to heal. In act, this is the most amous and best-known natural treatment or osteoarthritis, and or good reason. A studycarried out in Belgium ound that glucosamine sulate reversed calcifcationin the jointsand X rays proved it!

The recommended dose o glucosamine sulate is 1,500mg daily.

    Kang Gu Zeng Sheng Pian

This is a traditional Chinese patent herbal ormula. On manuacturer brandedit as Osteophyte in English. It is an amazing ormula used or a wide varietyo joint and bone syndromes, such as: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatism and general joint pain, tendon pain, bone spurs, vertebralcalcifcation ollowing an injury, cervical spondylosis, subluxated or dislocated

intervertebral discs, chronic cervical subluxation, spinal inammation, osteoporosis, osteophytosis, Kashin-Beck disease, Heberdens nodes and

    heel spurs.

These come in small tablets, recommended dosage o 6 tablets three timesper day.

    And a tip on prevention

Prevention is always the best medicine. To help prevent osteoarthritis, avoidrepetitive motions and heavy liting. Researchers in the Netherlands ound

that these two things tripled the risk o developing the disease!

Rheumatoid ArthritisRheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is non-discriminating as to whom it aects.Commonly known as the crippling arthritis, RAs particular symptomsinclude atigue, lack o appetite, low-grade evers, body aches and stiness.Typically, RA negatively aects several joints at once and in a symmetricalpattern, meaning i the right elbow is inamed, the let will usually mirror it.Though it can and does attack any joint in the body, RA usually targets thesmall joints o the hands and eet.

When inamed, the articular (joint) tissue that serves as the lining betweenthe bones becomes red, painul and swollen. The requency and durationo these are-ups varies widely. Ater repeated episodes, chronicinammation begins to cause damage to the surrounding tissue, cartilage

and bone. Eventually this damage will lead to loss o cartilage and weakeningo bones, resulting in painul and permanent destruction and deormities.

The truly sinister aspect o this disease is the extreme difculty in diagnosing

it. There isnt one test that doctors can use to determine i someone hasRA. Nor do all cases display the same set o symptoms. There are cases(approximately 10%) where the patient has an immediate initial are up.Usually, though, the progress o RA is slow and insidious. So when the personis fnally diagnosed, he can already have suered irreparable damage.

The worst part is that within fve years, 7% o these RA suerers will beseriously disabledand those are the ones who are currently on doctor-

    prescribed prescription drug therapy!

Once the cornerstone o RA therapy, NSAID usage is declining becauseit has been ound that these drugs are more toxic than once believed.

A recent study rom the University o Pennsylvania Medical Center oundthat some o the new NSAIDs just recently approved by the FDA mayincrease the risk o heart attacks, strokes and other harmul cardiovascularproblems! Additionally, almost all NSAIDs can cause serious gastrointestinal

side eectsincluding ulceration, bleeding and perorationat any timeand without warning.

Second-line drugs or RA are called Disease Modiying Anti-RheumaticDrugs (DMARD). These drugs actually address some o the causes o

arthritic pain, such as inammation and swelling. The belie is that their usemay help prevent any urther damage to the joints. But the price RA victimspay or this cure can be very high. Among the least harmul side eects

o the more commonly prescribed drug Methodtrexate are headaches, upset stomach, loss o appetite and mouth sores. More dangerous is thedrugs potential to reduce the patients white and red blood cell counts andeven to cause kidney damage! Cytoxan, another commonly used DMARD,can increase the risk o developing leukemia and bladder cancer, and can

cause temporary or permanent sterility in both men and women!

From the work being conducted at CWRU and other laboratories, scientistsare now learning that they dont have to use a sledgehammer to knock outRA. And that something as gentle and soothing as a cup o green tea can

    do the job nicely.

    Natures Healing Bush

Its old news that Green Tea has natural medicinal qualities. In 1211 A.D.,

the Buddhist monk Eisai wrote about the healing wonder o green tea inhis book, Maintaining Health by Drinking Tea. Green tea, like all true tea, comes rom the leaves o the Camellia Sinensis tree. And 90% o the worldssupply o tea is still produced in China.

What makes green tea so powerul is a chemical compound calledpolyphenol, which occurs naturally in plants and works as an antioxidant.Polyphenols work to protect the body rom the oxidative stress that causes

disease. Specifcally, the polyphenol-Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) is anextremely powerul antioxidant. In act, EGCG antioxidant activity is morepowerul than the antioxidants ound in vitamins C and E.

Ater 15 years o working with green tea in his cancer research, Dr. HasanMukhtar started looking at the possible benefts this drink could have or

people with RA. Realizing that both disorders were inammatory in nature, his team began testing to see i green tea would have the same healing

aect on RA as it does on cancer and cardiovascular disease.

His frst paper, Prevention o Collagen-Induced Arthritis in Mice by aPolyphenolic Fraction o Green Tea, was presented to the National

Academy o Sciences in April 2005. The results were astounding. Out o the18 mice that were given green tea extract, 10 never developed any arthriticsymptoms, and the remaining eight only developed a much milder orm o

    arthritis.

The amount o green tea given was the equivalent o drinking our cups aday. Lead author o the paper, Dr. Tariq M. Haqqi said, Taken together, our studies suggest that a polyphenolic raction rom green tea that is rich

in antioxidants may be useul in the prevention and onset and severity oarthritis.

Three independent and controlled experiments were conducted. Using awidely accepted animal model that is very similar to RA, the mice were

injected with collagen to induce arthritis. Two groups were studied or 40days, while a third was examined or 85 days to veriy that the green teadid not simply delay the onset o the disease.

Green tea, unlike the more widely used black version, is not ermented.Instead o crushing the tea leaves, thereby removing the polyphenols, green tea is frst dried, then heated. One teaspoon steeped in hot (notboiling) water contains anywhere rom 100 to 200mg o EGCG. Milk shouldnot be added, as it negates the teas benefcial properties. According to

this study and others that were done or other diseases, two to our cups

    a day is usually recommended.

In a second study, researchers ound urther evidence that green tea is apowerul tool in the fght against RA. They discovered that the polyphenolECGC can protect human articular chondrocytes rom being destroyed inwhat is known as apoptosis, or cell suicide. These chondrocytes are thecells responsible or releasing cartilage, the very thing that RA attacks. Dr.Haqqi said this exciting discovery, coupled with their earlier study, oers RApatients new hope. Though the existing damage RA may have caused will not

be repaired, it seems green tea will aid in halting any urther progress. And

by sipping several cups o green tea every day, those who are geneticallypredisposed to RA may never have to suer rom its disastrous eects.

Human trials are currently being developed. In the meantime, however,Mukhtar and Haqqi both strongly encourage people to start drinking green

tea. Nobody has shown any orm o toxicity associated with tea, and withthe tremendous amount o data showing its many benefcial qualities, it is

a wise and wholesome preventive measure.

Since prevention is the cure or both orms o arthritis, let us now examine

how 3,000 years o traditional Chinese medicine ound a pattern o imbalancethat is at the root cause o them.

    Chinese MedicineOffers Prevention

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) views things not in singularity, but interms o a pattern o imbalance in the body that causes disease. It thendierentiates the pattern based on the most prevalent sign and symptom. In this way a pattern can be identifed, observed over time and (hopeully)

corrected, thus alleviating the disease and/or eradicating its symptoms.

In TCM the various types o arthritis are grouped under the rubric obstructivepattern. The condition occurs when external wind, cold, dampness and/or heat enter the body and lodge themselves in the meridian (energy)

channels and network vessels. This leads to impairment o qi (vital energy)and blood circulation, which causes such signs and symptoms as: achypain, impaired joint movement, numbness, tingling and/or heaviness o the

    limbs.

There are two main Obstruction Patterns in TCM. They are Wind-Cold-Damp and Wind-Damp-Heat.

The Wind-Cold-Damp pattern is caused by wind, cold and/ordampness invading the body when immunity is low. It blocks the channels

and orces an excess o coldness and/or dampness to congregate aroundthe joints, thereby restricting movement and causing pain.

Wind-Cold-Damp obstruction pattern is urther dierentiated as either beingMoving Obstruction, Painul Obstruction or Fixed Obstruction.

Moving (Wind) Obstruction fnds the pain in the joints to move orwander between locationslike the movement o wind. Symptoms includeimpaired movement o the joints that changes location, aversion to wind,

    ever and chills.

Painful (Cold) Obstruction fnds severe pain in one location. Symptomsinclude impaired movement o specifc joints, pain that is worse whenexposed to cold but is alleviated when exposed to warmth.

    12/14

Fixed (Damp) Obstruction fnds the pain to be fxed in one location.Symptoms include numbness and swelling o the skin, heaviness o thelimbs, and the conditions worsens when the weather is cool, cold ordamp.

The Wind-Damp-Heat pattern is caused when wind, dampness and/or heat lodges in the body. This can easily happen when ones immunesystem is weak during the long hot/humid/damp summer months.

Symptoms include heat blocking the channels causing hot skin, swelling

and red color o painul areas that increases with contact. Since it is a heatcondition, there is oten a dehydration aspect causing dry mouth, darkconcentrated urine and constipation. Drinking plenty o cool, purifed waterand watermelon juice will do much to alleviate this condition.

Since TCM dierentiates between the syndromes o obstruction, it doesnot look to treat them all the same way. Various acupuncture points wouldbe needled and herbal medicines would be used to do any number o

the ollowing: eliminate wind and/or dampness, dissipate cold, warm thechannels, ree the network vessels, resolve heat toxin and stop pain.

I you live in an area where there are acupuncturists or Chinese herbalists,we recommend consulting them or treatment. However, there are fvesimple things that you can do yoursel to help prevent or alleviate the

    symptoms o arthritis.

    Lifestyle ChangesHelp Prevention

Whether you have ull-blown arthritis or just creaky joints, pain in your dailynemesis. The creaky knees and achy back o old age are a well-knownstereotype or good reason Its based in truth. As we age, musclesshorten and lose some elasticity. The sot tissues that hold joints together

    stien. Bones lose their density.

Conventional medicine typically oers cover-up treatments or thesenaturally occurring changes. But these treatments do nothing to restorelost unction. They may relieve symptomsand just as likely, they may not.

But they dont get at the root causes o the problems. And people stillsuer.

In addition to trying the natural remedies and therapy mentioned above, here are some liestyle choices to be mindul o that will go a long way

    toward prevention.

    1. Be mindul o wear-and-tear on the joints through repetitive stressesor strained activities, such as running, liting, machine work, dancing, martial arts, etc. Try to take a break or change position (or activity) oten

to decrease changes o breakdown. And be sure to warm up the musclesand joints properly beore engaging in such activities.

    2. Inactivity can also lead to joint problems, since lack o exercise ormovement in general can weaken the joint-supporting musculature anddecrease mobility. A joint, like a muscle, that is not used enough willatrophy, becoming weak, sti, dysunctional and prone to injury. So getup and move around, clean the house or exercise as oten as possible.Movement is the key.

    3. Studies have shown that obese individuals are at risk or developingarthritis because o the constant load placed on them. This is especially

the case with such joints as the knees and hips. Changing your diet andexercise habits will help prevent this rom happening!
