Tout le monde a en tête le mot « utopie » et une vague idée de sa définition. Historiquement, l’utopie est un genre littéraire inventé1 par le diplomate-politique et philosophe anglais Thomas More. Le mot « utopie » vient du titre de son ouvrage écrit en 1516 mais surtout du nom donné par l’auteur à l’île où se situe l’action du second livret. Divisé en deux parties, l’ouvrage commence par un pamplhet sur la société anglaise de l’époque et enchaîne par le récit d’un marin - Raphaël - revenu d’un voyage au long cours. Il raconte avoir accosté sur une île située « nulle part », sur aucune carte ! Tout au long de son récit, la description d’un monde idéal surgit. Après une première lecture, le sentiment du « tout est au mieux dans le meilleur des mondes » du Pangloss cher à Voltaire part en vrille. En effet, la vie sur l’île est très réglementée : interdiction de divorcer2, un nombre d’enfant à procréer imposé, etc ; tout un ensemble de contraintes est établi pour le bonheur de tous.

Ce petit rappel, sur les origines d’un terme devenu tellement empreint de liberté et d’espoir dans un avenir radieux, démontre que derrière toute idée d’utopie son contraire n’est jamais loin. La « dystopie » (ou de la « contre-utopie ») incarne ce côté obscur. Pas besoin d’énumérer les nombreux « ismes » du XXe siècle pour se rendre à l’évidence : à chaque fois que l’homme a voulu le bonheur de l’homme, une catastrophe s’en est suivie.Depuis très longtemps les artistes sont fascinés par ce pouvoir de l’homme à toujours transformer ses rêves en cauchemars. Souvent, ils tirent des éléments de la réalité la plus banale et les malaxent, les assemblent de telle manière que leurs œuvres traduisent cette fascination/répulsion envers cette schizophrénie humaine.L’homéopathie 3 comme métaphore semblerait correspondre à l’attitude des œuvres présentées dans le cadre de cette plateforme dont l’ambiance générale est à parcourir comme un paysage dystopique où dessins, peintures, photographies, vidéos, volumes et installations en constituent un recoin.

UTOPIA / DYSTOPIA

Everyone knows the word “utopia” and has a vague idea of what it means. In fact, looking back in history, it was a literary genre invented1 by the English diplomat, political figure and philosopher, Sir Thomas More. The word “utopia” comes from the title of the book he wrote in 1516 but, above all, is the name given by the author to the island where the action of the second part of the book takes place. The book starts with a pamphlet on English society at that time and continues with the tale of a sailor – Raphael - home from travels to distant lands. He relates landing on an island situated “nowhere”, not on any maps! Throughout the story, the description of an ideal world takes shape. After first reading it, the feeling of “all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds” as Voltaire’s Pangloss thought, takes a different turn! In fact, life on the island is highly regulated: no divorce2, a specified number of children to be brought into the world, etc.; a whole host of constraints is

UTOPIA / DYSTOPIA established for the happiness of everyone.This little reminder of the origins of a term that has truly become a mark of liberty and hope in a radiant future, shows that, behind any idea of utopia lurks its opposite. “Dystopia” or “counter-utopia” embodies this obscure side. No need to enumerate the numerous “isms” of the 20th century to realise how true this is: every time man sought happiness for man, a catastrophe occurred.For a long while now, artists have been fascinated by this ability of mankind to transform its dreams into nightmares. They often draw elements from the most commonplace reality, blending and assembling them in such a manner that their works reflect this fascination with or repulsion towards this human schizophrenia.As a metaphor, homeopathy3 would seem to correspond to the stance of the works presented in the context of this platform, the general atmosphere of which should be perused like a dystopic landscape where drawings, paintings, photographs, videos, volumes and installations form one corner.
