Impact and Engagement

The Bond Law Faculty was delighted to welcome Judge Eugene Hyman (retired

Judge of the Superior Court of California for the County of Santa Clara) as a visiting

scholar from 3-4 April. The Judge, who has more than 20 years of judicial experience

and is internationally recognised as an expert in therapeutic jurisprudence and domes-

tic violence, gave a Twilight Seminar on domestic violence, risk assessment and the

sharing of information across service providers. There was a record number of at-

tendees at the Seminar, made up of a who’s who of the Gold Coast DV sector, includ-

ing their Honours Magistrate Strofield and Tynan and Registrar Bould from the South-

port Specialist Domestic Violence Court. Bond staff and students were also well-

represented. During the Judge’s visit to Bond, his Honour particularly enjoyed a per-

sonalised tour of the Corrigan Collection of Indigenous Art. His Honour is presenting

at the Non-Adversarial Justice conference on Thursday 6th April with Bond Law Facul-

ty Professor, Rachael Field on the topic: ‘Non-Adversarial Approaches to Domestic

Violence: Interrogating How Theory and Practice Can Be Better Integrated’.

A list of handouts for this seminar can be found on the Law Research SharePoint sub-

site.

Assistant Professor Jodie O’Leary wrote a submission to the Victorian Parliamen-

tary Inquiry into Youth Justice Centres—click here for the submission.

Academic Spotlight This month we bring the spotlight to Assistant Professor Annette Greenhow.

Research areas of interest

My research areas of interest are in the areas of sports law and sports regulation and governance. I have a specific interest in the area of sport-related concussion.

Current research projects

Currently I am working on a research project that applies regulatory theory to the is-sue of sport-related concussion. Threshold areas include an examination of the regu-latory space of sport-related concussion, identifying the regulatory actors with the abil-ity to alter or influence the behaviour of others and how responses have been de-signed, implemented, enforced and reviewed in the areas of concussion management, concussion prevention, concussion research and concussion education. I’m also an Associate Investigator in a NHMRC grant application examining Concus-sion and Genetics lodged in the 2017 round.

Recent publications

I have completed a chapter for publication in the Handbook of Global Sports Law (Routledge) due for publication later in 2017.

What is your dream project/area of research to work on?

To be part of an interdisciplinary research group addressing the harm associated with sport-related concussion and offering practical solutions to ensure a safe sporting system for all participants.

Best research advice you can share or were given?

To embrace the ‘rejections’ and to learn from every experience - positive or nega-tive. As I reflect on the work that I’ve done over the years, I can see that the rejec-tions were an essential element necessary to redefine the roadmap and to set me on the path towards achieving my research goals and objectives.

Favourite way to relax

I love to spend time relaxing with my family at the beach or under a tree on beautiful Burleigh Headland..

A random fact you’d like to share I own two surfboards and a Segway (my husband is the Qld/NSW/NT distributor).

Moments of epiphany and why? To use a sporting pun, I was ‘served a curve ball’ on 13 February 2015 when I was confronted with a health challenge that was to change my life forever. I realised then that I could no longer enjoy the ‘illusion of immortality’ and just had to ‘go for it’ and get done what I felt I was driven to do.

Who inspires you? Personally - my two beautiful daughters Mia and Ana. Professionally - Emeritus Pro-fessor Mary Hiscock for leading the way in 1972 and inspiring the sisters-in-law!

HDR Reminders:

Publish your research! The Australian Journal of Clinical Education (AJCE) is an

open access, on-line journal jointly published by Law and HSM via epublica-

tions@bond. The AJCE is a double blind peer-reviewed journal devoted to issues of

practice and innovation in clinical education across the two disciplines of Law and

Health. HDR students (PhD/equiv and Masters by research/equiv) are encouraged to

submit their research for publication to the AJCE. To be considered for peer review/

publication, articles must adhere to the submission requirements as described on the

‘submission process’ page .

If you haven’t already seen this youtube clip on ‘Pursuing HDR Studies at Bond’ it’s

highly recommended you do so. It’s an informative discussion and includes current

academics and HDR students in Bond Law.

All HDRs are encouraged to take advantage of creating an online PhD Bond pro-

file. It’s easy, just complete a profile form (email lawresearch for a copy or you’ll find

them under the ilearn HDR Community site under Handbook and forms.

This post on the Thesis Whisperer addresses the ongoing challenge of time man-

agement. It’s a worthwhile but lighthearted read: ‘How to stop “flipping” (and write

a good to-do list)’

Don’t forget the forthcoming Introduction to Learning and Teaching at Bond work-

shop (see Upcoming Events) which is open to HDR students.

Centre for Commercial Law The Centre for Commercial Law co-hosted the Global Law Conference in Paris from

5-6 January 2017. It was another stellar event, with many interesting papers and ro-

bust discussions. 45 judges, academics and practitioners enjoyed the conference and

the surroundings. Pictured are some of the contributors. The 2017 Global Law con-

ference program is available at https://cleparis.org/.

Transnational, International and Com-parative Law and Policy (TICLP) Net-work

Transnational, International and Comparative Law and Policy Network. You can

view the draft program and register via links on the TICLP website: www.bond.edu.au/

ticlp . In particular, please consider attending the opening keynote by Professor Kim

Rubenstein from the Australian Nationality University in the morning of Friday 27 May

Law and Politics of Control and Power", including from our own Jon Crowe.

Centre for Professional Legal

Education (CPLE)

The Centre for Professional Legal Education has some exciting news this month. We

have been approached by Western Sydney University and asked if we would consider

taking over the Centre for Legal Education. If you have not heard of the CLE, it was

originally established in 1992 by the Law Foundation of New South Wales. In its early

years the Centre was extremely active, and engaged in some important and impactful

projects, including a number of studies into the career intentions of law students and

the career destinations of law graduates (under Christopher Roper), the publication of

an annual Legal Education Yearbook, the establishment of the New South Wales Le-

gal Education Conference, and the creation of a small specialist library collection de-

voted to legal education. In the last few years the Centre has been relatively quiet, its

activity largely limited to publication of the Legal Education Digest. The transfer of the

Centre to Bond University would involve the virtual handover of the Centre’s legacy

and name, as well as the physical handover of the specialist library collection and

Centre documentation. This is a marvellous opportunity to merge the energy, innova-

tion and enthusiasm of our Centre with the 25 year heritage of Australia’s oldest legal

education research centre. The details of the arrangement are now being settled.

Meanwhile, the activities of the Centre continue. Excellent scholarship continues to be

produced and exciting and innovative training courses continue to be developed and

offered. Our second year is shaping up to be even bigger and brighter than our first!
